Balmoral Fish & Chicken Bar in Dumfries & Galloway

I came to show my visiting Spanish friend a traditional fish supper. Because this place is so good he now thinks fish and chips is amazing so I think he should stop now so he stays happy. The price is really good and i loved the battered haggis. We will be back and next time will have the battered pizza.

Called in here after a long drive and was not disappointed. I had steak pie and chips, wife had lasagna both very tasty, quick service and pleasant staff in clean premises.

I had been away all day and arrived back in Dumfries feeling that what I needed was a nice fish supper to revive me. What a disappointment! It was almost cold. The chips looked as though they had been sitting in the box for some time and were sticking together. The batter was soggy and certainly not light and crisp. If I hadn't been so tired and hungry I would have put the lid back on the box and taken it back!

Ordered a home delivery for the first time. Despite being a wee bit out of town, arrived on time, delicious. Had oven on as thought we'd need to reheat but piping hot. No grease. Just the best fish and chicken suppers ever!!

I have always regarded this as the best fish and chip shop in Dumfries . Have always enjoyed anything I have had . I have had 2 fish suppers in the last 6 months from here and have been disappointed on both occasions . The fish was small , the batter was hard and it tasted as if had been sitting for a while or reheated . Unfortunately the chips were not much better . Unfortunately will not be back .

Spending couples of nights in Dumfries and read the reviews of this chippy. Sounded good so we had a carry out fish supper and single fish. Well it was dreadful. One piece of fish in the supper which was very small and had more batter than fish. Chips were horrible as if the fat needed changed and they were not fresh. Very disappointing.

First came upon this establishment by complete chance after being diverted due to an accident on the A75 back in 2015 , my friend and me had just ridden from Loch Lomond on final stage of our 1500 mile bike tour around Scotland. The fish was excellent and cooked fresh , chips where as chips should be fluffy and a real potato taste. We finished off with a lovely ice cream made on the premises. Had a great conversation with the owner , a lovely Scots Italian guy who told us the shop had been in the family for generations. He paid great interest in our bike adventure and introduced us to a very friendly seagull that has keeping a ‘Birdseye’ on the place for years! I’ve since made detours travelling home to Liverpool from visiting family in Troon just to go and sample the delights several times now over the last 5 years and it’s been excellent each and every time. The owner always remembers us and asks about my mate and our bike adventures since we first went. Brought some Lasagne home on my latest visit just before Christmas . I’ll be back again late spring 2020, can’t wait!

Love this chippy, we visit friends who live in Dumfries a few times a year and we pay a visit to this chippy every time we come, food is alway's good , we love the lasagne best we have ever had, highly recommend, very friendly staff

Excellent fish & chip shop. A local family run business for over 100 years. The fish is fresh (not frozen like most others in Dumfries). Staff are very friendly. Prices are reasonable and the shop is very clean. Highly recommend the homemade lasagne too, a secret family recipe!

Cooked about an hour before served .Rock solid better .Fish tiny .Avoid this place . I gave them benefit of doubt by visiting twice ,Big mistake .

Got fish supper not even appropriate container to begin , fish was dryer than a nuns chuff , ghandies flip flop has more moisture in it . Was grey/black and almost lost a tooth to the batter that can only be described as a weapon , curry sauce u would imagine bein very simple to make ..... nope was lumpy and texture like jelly. Ye know it’s in edible when ye throw it out to the seagulls and even they spit it out . AVOID AVOID AVOID ...

Disgusting is the understatement of the century. Fish polish, batter terrible, the things they sold me and called chips were grey shrivelled up inedible garbage. They must have been cooked they day before then refried. This place wants shutting down. Only advice I can give is stay well clear.

Bought 2 fish suppers, got them home and was totally disappointed both chips and fish were over cooked and crunchy, one of our fish had been refried beyond recognition and batter was rock hard, been going to this chippy for over 30 years but will not be hurrying back anytime soon, over priced for what we got. Time to look for a new chippy

Bought 2 fish suppers - not impressed. There was more batter than fish and I didn’t like the flavour of either the fish or chips. Batter was very greasy. Wouldn’t rush back .

Love going here and do visit on a regular basis staff always chat away with you foods always fresh cooked price ain't too bad either

They dont do pie suppers in Oz, this is the chip shop my husband makes a bee line for whenever he is back in Dumfries. Straight in for a Pie supper ( pie and chips to the rest of the world) and why not finish with a double nugget wafer( rest of the world just trust me and order one!) Wash down with a can of Irn Brew what more can I say. Its also convenient for the hospital should your heart stop after eating all this

Visited here last month for the first time in a while and never impressed. Food basic, nothing to shout about and always feel it's overpriced for what you get.

Fantástico servicio, personal muy agradable, incluso los más jóvenes tienen una sonrisa alegre y feliz, es el mejor lugar en Dumfries por una tienda de chips, el lugar es impecable, y el helado casero es un sueño!

A veces la comida de aquí es fantástica. Otras veces, es un poco aburrida. El servicio es bueno y los precios también son aceptables, pero nada excepcional.

Le fish supper est très bon, mais il n'y a pas que du poisson, il y a beaucoup (trop) d'autres plats proposés. Par contre, il n'y a qu'une seule sorte de poisson.

Mi marido llamó aquí cuando él estaba en Dumfries en un viaje de pesca hace unos meses, él estaba tan contento con su comida para llevar, la próxima vez, juntos por un par de días, él me llevó! Adora a sus cenas de haggis!

Called in for a macaroni and chips and a fish supper for myself and my husband the macaroni was disgusting microwaved and artificially flavoured not much cheese taste at all and was flung away it was that bad the fish had more batter than fish...

Realmente disfrutamos de un lujo después de un día en la playa... el pescado y las patatas fritas eran simplemente perfectamente preparado.. y servicio amable.

A traditional Fish and Chip shop, not changed since I first visited 50 years ago. Still run by the same couple, still clean, efficient and friendly. Still the best chip shop food.

2 sausage suppers, one chip all flung in the bin. Chips black and cold, sausages greasy. Used to come all the time but not so good now

always friendly owners and staff. Chips are great, chicken is the best i`ve tasted, portions are always good, service is great. What more do you want from a chippy !! Recommend to everyone.

A family run takeaway. Very friendly father, mother, and son Italian business. Staff is mostly wee lassies who look about 14 and who obviously haven't been to charm school. However, varied menu, and some items cooked to order (eg Pizza).Excellent fish and chips - especially after a couple of pints at the Pleuchies pub opposite!t

Not the biggest of portions- but the Fish & Chips were delicious. To be fair- eating any more would just have been greedy

Super quality and service every time I am here. Portions are more then ample with most options being cooked to order rather than sitting in a hot-hold state for hours like some other establishments are known to do. Home-made food is also available as well as classic chicken/fish suppers.

A second trip to this establishment. Just as good as our first visit. Proclaimed, by our kids, as the best fish suppers they've ever had.

Very nice food, on the pricey side but very stingey portions even when asking and paying for large. Im fed up of being ripped off here, they are indeed kiddy portions. No wonder its smiling service, they are making a killing! We now go elsewhere.

Been getting fish and chips in here for years, Great family run business, always a smile and a bit of craic behind the counter. Can be queued out the door when it is busy but service is still good. Usually nice crisp battered fish and good chips.Big portions. Fish and chips isn't poor mans food anymore, it costs plently but thats the same everywhere. I've introduced the next generation of Martin's to the Balmoral as well, they love it too.

Don't understand bad reviews for here, my favourite place for a fish supper . Service always with a smile and portion of the fish and chips is about right, if you want more chips then just ask and pay a bit extra. Been going here for over 25 years and never had a bad supper !!!

The food is not bad, but it does edge on the expensive side, the portions tho are actually really miserable. More like a kids portion.I am not a massive eater either....

Numerous visits, their fish is very good but have always found the chip portions a bit stingy. Friendly staff.

Ordered 3 things. Drove 2 minutes home. Ate cold chips, over cooked fish & searched for the battered sausage that was omitted from our enormous order.Literally nothing that would make me return!
