The chicken and veg and chips were ok but the dry powdery lumpy mash was really bad. My friend had to mix it with the sauce on the table and even then it wasn’t very nice.

New chef, new menu and very good value. Some nice nice twists and touches but our faves were goats cheese salad and the fish and chips. Does what it says on the tin. Great staff too but then, it is my local. 😊

The Balbairdie used to be a great wee pub with a great atmosphere but lately it has really gone downhill. The drinks glasses didn’t look very clean the last time they we were there ( 2 weeks ago) and twice my husband has been sick after drinking in here. ( I drank coke straight from the can as the glass didn’t look clean so I wasn’t sick). It’s a real shame as it used to be such a nice pub. I don’t think I will be going back until improvements are made.

I was sent here because unfortunately I had found myself homeless. When I arrived I was not made to feel welcome, room was nice but extremely noisy so after a couple of nights asked to be moved. In the second room I had the worst weekend of my life I felt like my bed was sitting in the bar below and I had a total of 7 hours sleep the whole weekend. Then today I get a knock at the door to tell me I had to leave. I was told by homeless team to stay until they found me somewhere to go but some woman that worked there was having none of it and td me to leave. I have never felt so low in my life. I was made to feel like scum and the atmosphere was awful so I was left with no choice but to leave with no where to go. I will never ever return there and I hope that member of staff can sleep at night the way she treated me was rude, unsympathetic and downright nasty. Will never forget it..

Do not stay at this hotel. The staff are so rude and abrupt. They come and knock at your door to chase you out your room hours before you need to. Just what you need after a night out!!! Disgusting place. No food or breakfast provided. No refund given. Do not pay in advance if you do stay. Pay at the end so you can control how much if anything you should give them.

We were looking for somewhere to eat and found this place through TripAdvisor. It is part of a 1 star hotel and a very local pub. The menu is mostly standard UK food (with a few of our now regular imports like fajitas!). It is fairly Spartan décor but the two folk running it are very friendly and great hosts. What the real X factor turned out to be were the delicious veal specials. So tender with tasty sauces. Check out in advance what's on offer before you book.

Next to an extensive public car park with very few spaces, the Balbairdie Inn looks rather like a village pub relocated to the middle of an industrial site in Bathgate. The décor and furnishings are tired and depressed and in dire need of refurbishment but the welcome at the bar was very warm and we were served with drinks and shown quickly to our round table for six in a private area towards the back. The food order was taken - fish and chips for four and homemade steak pie for two - and we waited a very long time for it to arrive due to limited cooking facilities and staffing within the kitchen. On the plus side, the fish and chips were, I gather, very good and the steak pie was one of the best I have had for years in a pub. Special mention has to made of the waitress who was exceptionally friendly, cheerful and good fun whose interactions made a long wait seem shorter. She was 5 star but the overall service rating has to take into account the long time to get the food out of the kitchen (hopefully much quicker if there is just two of you rather than six!) The coffee (rudimentary instant) should be avoided until management invest in some equipment capable of producing a real cup of "joe"

The decor in the restaurant is not that great but the food certainly outshines the decor. The service was very good and everything seems to be cooked freshly as you wait. But nearby parking is difficult; the venue is dark and "basic" and the food took a *long* time to arrive. To be fair to the delightfully "sparky" waitress she warned us of all the likely delays in advance so can't fault her in any way. My fish and chips took quite a while to arrive but it was beautifully cooked with a light batter. I expected "chips" as that was what was stated in the menu but they were really "French fries". Not unpleasant in any way but far too thin to be "chips". Coffee was simply instant coffee. I wish I could give a better review ..

Went with my wife, her sister and our 2 young kids. We were a bit dubious when we first entered as it was quiet, looked a bit sparse (only half the tables made up and didn't feel like a restaurant) and in need of some decor love and care. However the girl that greeted us was very cheery and after getting seated then taking a look at the menu things started to look up. When the food came we all really enjoyed it. I briefly spoke with the chef who seemed to genuinely care about the food he was serving up and it showed. It only loses a star as decoratively/atmosphere wise it could do with improvement but there were no complaints about the food and we will definitely be back.

I ate here earlier tonight with my daughter and both of us were very impressed with the quality of the food. We shared nachos as a starter which was delicious. For our entrees my daughter had ham cooked in cola with spring onion mash, which she said was the best ham she has ever eaten. I had steak which melted in my mouth as it was cooked to perfection. For dessert we shared a meringue with forest fruits. The service was excellent, the waitress was friendly and made recommendations. Overall a lovely meal in a restaurant I would highly recommend.

One of the nicest things we've eaten this year. The food in here can't be beaten locally. They even do a bargain Sunday lunch for £9.95 for 2 courses which include the likes of aged rump steak, their home made burgers & a lot of their normal menu. A steal. Just go. It's great. Honest.

The burger and chips are all homemade and you can really appreciate the difference. It looked so delicious! My daughter always has steak pie when she eats out and she was very impressed. Decor a bit shabby but quality and value of the food MORE than makes up for that. My girlfriend ordered the 8oz and I was presented with something that was easily 14/15oz. Up until recently my girlfriend hadn't really eaten steak cooked properly, and she was blown away. The steak was of the highest quality. Cooked to perfection. I would say that it's easily one of the best steaks I have ever eaten. The chef and the waitress were both very nice people, too. My husband and I visited on a rainy Saturday night and the place was busy. At first, especially as you enter through the bar, it seems a bit rough around the edges, but please look beyond that as the food is delicious. The waiter told us that there could be a bit of a wait as it was busy and they only have a small kitchen and a couple of parties waiting to be served. We appreciated the honesty and were in no hurry so decided to wait and I am glad we did. The food was fantastic. We had nachos to start, which were a good sized portion and plenty of cheese. As a main course we both had steak pie, which was absolutely delicious and again, a decent portion. The chips were hand-made and very tasty (although I would have liked them maybe a wee bit thicker) and charging extra for extra gravy is maybe not worth it, as my husband didn't get much more than me, who opted for no extra! I had had my eye on the dessert board before I ordered my starter and main, so the chewy meringue with mixed berries was my choice, with my husband going for the banoffee pie. Both were home-made and absolutely delicious (I tried both). The service was excellent with just one waiter, Richy, looking after everyone, knowing what stage everyone was at, serving drinks and clearing and cleaning tables. Great job Richy! We also met the chef on the way out and congratulated him on the food. We were surprised by the value for money, too, as the three course meal for two with a few pints of beer and a couple of soft drinks was under £50. We will definitely be back and are just sorry we haven't been before after living in the area for 8 years!

Colin the chef is one of the best I've came across in the sometimes Prima Donna world of the catering.Hard working chef who cooks quality food combined with having a friendly approach to his diners. And incidentally I did criticise the pub a few month ago because they didn't have Budweiser on draught for a few weeks but when you go to the pub for a first class pint of the lager like bud and their not selling it then it does irritate you unless of course they are discontinuing it.On Saturday though it was on draught and that combined with a great atmosphere made it a fantastic night....thank you

Q - Why has someone given this restaurant a bad review for not having Budweiser? Not having Budweiser is a bonus for me unless you're used to drinking other peoples body fluids. Anyway. About the food. We arrived for a late midweek dinner & Colin didn't disappoint. He knocked out 2 delicious portions of fresh chicken breast wth crispy pancetta, buttered cabbage & magic hand cut skinny chips. Still sticking with simple, fresh produce in generous portions, a lot of other establisments doing supposedly 'similar' fare could learn a lot from this place. OK - I love this place & I don't get to eat here nearly as much as I would like. Go. It's actually really good.;)

Well well well ....in my quest to find bathgates best restaurant I find myself at this nice little hidden away pub.My wife and I have lived in bathgate for over four years and never knew this place existed....I came across it when doing a review for another pub and noticed it was number one in bathgate.I'm going to be honest and list good and not so good in my review.1. Nice welcome at bar.....bar staff spot on.2. Great choice of beers.....love Budweiser on draught.3. When asking for shandy bar person asked if half and half would be OK.....that might sound a strange good point and as i tend to have a shandy when driving I liked to be asked how much lemonade I would like in the shandy as the bigger percentage of bar staff give you a lager tops.......take note other staff working in pubs.4. Good welcome to the restaurant.... Pleasant waitress.5. Fish and chips were awesome..... Perfect batter.6. Gorgonzola sauce with the escalop of chicken was in my wife's words....."to die for" and chicken was really moist.....top marks for both dishes.7. I never ever have desserts but had to try sticky toffee pudding and was not disappointed....absolutely tasty and well worth the try.8. And best of all........hand cut chips.......my wife being a Yorkshire lass and never understanding why more Scottish restaurants dont prep their own chips was over the moon to get them here as all your best restaurants in Yorkshire serve them and trust me I've tried quite a few of them.Oh and finally the not so good and trust me I'm struggling to find one.1. Maybe a bit bright in restaurant. That's it I'm afraid....I'm no tam Cowan but I always try and give a fair review. So last but not least......will I eat here again???Most definitely yes 10/10

As this was my late breakfast before a stag day in Edinburgh it set me up very nicely. Today I had the carrot and coriander soup to start and Peri peri chicken breast with salad and chips. The chicken was very succulent and seasoned to perfection. The burgers are also the best in Scotland as far as I am concerned. Even the bacon and cheese is hand selected from quality suppliers.I only wish my busy work schedule permitted me to eat here more often.

My wife and I had a lovely meal at Balbardine on Sunday 8th, have to agree with last review the portion was a bit smaller than you would usually get in a pub but that was made up for in the quality of the food served. The veg was not over cooked which is the norm home made chips, crisp pastry with filling actually between the pastry and not the usual a stew with a pastry top dropped on at the last minute. I would rather have a shortened menu with items made on the premises rather than a large selection of bought in dishes. Plus £8 for a main course on a Sunday isn't too expensive, maybe charge a bit more and give larger portions but not compromise on the way you cook the food. Only put average for atmosphere as the eating area is not as nice as the bar area.

Visited the Balbardie today as we hadn't been for over a year, never ordered a starter as we thought we wouldn't manage our main meal. How wrong we wee,we ordered the steak pie, when it eventually arrived we saw a huge plate with about 10 chips a few veg and a very small portion of steak hiding inside a pastry cut in two and all this for £8.Also there was a very poor selection on the dessert menu.Must admit though the steak pie was nice just not enough for price of it.

Visited here on the off chance they were serving late lunch. Was pleasantly greeted by the waitress. The menu was extensive with something for everyone's taste. I enjoyed a sirloin cooked to perfection in a Mexican style. My partner had a lovely steak pie with home made chips. My daughter had home made chicken nuggets. They enjoyed it So much so that they both want to go back this weekend. The new chef(owner) should be applauded for the service and quality of the produce he supplies. Keep up the good work and we will be back soon.

Stayed at the Balbairdie b and b which was nice enough for working away but the food in the restaurant was amazing. Never had a bad meal. It's always been excellent. It,s not your average pub grub. Reasonably priced too.

Absolutely brilliant meal on Sunday night. Steaks cooked to perfection. Staff friendly and helpful. Excellent prices. Fast service. Only disappointment was an unruly group headed by a deranged Canadian woman at the next table continually shouting and swearing at her hyperactive 4 year old . They were continually abusive to the staff demanding free drinks as they had waited fifteen minutes for their main course! They refused to eat their main meal until they got more free drink. Despite this staff managed to calm them down tactfully and politely and get them to leave. Although no fault of the staff we were presented with a free bottle of bubbly for the annoyance caused by unruly customers. Now that is service!

Went here for lunch yesterday! Was sooo good! Waitress was lovely and friendly, brought my 2 year little girl a notepad and some crayons to keep her entertained. Both me and my partner ordered the burger, mine had cheese and bacon on it. The burger was so tasty and there was plenty of bacon and cheese on it. My partner had the highland burger, at first he was confused as to where the haggis was, only to discover it was mixed through the mince in the burger. Im not a fan of haggis but I tried it and it was lovely. My daughter had the chicken nuggets which were beautiful! Sooo tasty and the chips were to die for!! I had banoffee pie for pudding and he had hot chocolate fudge cake! Both were amazing! My pie was the best I've ever had! They even brought out a little bowl of ice cream for my daughter. The only downside was they didn't do fruit shoots or any kind like that and my daughter isn't too good with a cup. However that really is a small complaint on what was an amazing meal! All together including drinks it was £31. Fantastic value for money and a really lovely meal! Will definitely be back!

I'm not sure where to start, really. I've been a couple of times now and have yet to find anything wrong with the food or the service provided. My latest trip to the Balbairdie Restaurant was my best one yet. It was very busy and I was highly worried that the staff might be stretched a little but this wasn't the case. I took along my grand parents for a bite to eat at no doubt the restaurants busiest time, My grandmother who is disabled and restricted to a wheelchair had nothing but praise for the way they catered for her needs and the delivery of the food. I can stress how good the food and the service is here and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxed atmosphere as well as a very reasonably priced meal. For four people having a 3 course meal each it cost us a lot less than it would anywhere else, £70. Chefs do an excellent job here and I can see why they are highly praised. Keep it up!! Highly recommended.

Last night, as a party of 5, we visited the Balbairdie for a special meal. The evening began well. When the starters were brought to the table they were well presented and tasted good. We ordered steak pie and a special from the Special's Board, as well as three steaks. We waited quite a long time for our main courses to be served. The meal from the Special's board and the steak pie was okay , however although the steaks were flavoursome they were stone cold so we sent them back. Within a minute the same steaks came back and again they were stone cold, so again we sent them back. After a couple of minutes the same steaks came back and again they were still cold. ( how many times would it be safe to reheat food) The waitress came and told us the chef would come and see us and we presumed he would cook us fresh steaks and bring them . How wrong were we! After over 30 minutes , the chef did come to the table to apologise and asked us if we would like to order something else as he hadn't any steaks left. After being there for over one hour and quarter ,with a well behaved 4 year old who was getting tired, and being deeply disappointed with the service we decided enough was enough. Although the restaurant did not charge for the meal they completely wasted our evening and my birthday celebration.

Me and my friends visit the restaurant regularly and have yet to be disappointed. I can highly recommend the burger selection especially the Americano and pulled pork options. Homemade chips, brilliant, say no more. Lukas and Colin do a fantastic job in the kitchen and are always good for a takeaway when we are in a rush. The waitresses are attentive and good for a laugh. The atmosphere is light hearted and friendly. Would highly recommend.

Another great meal from Colin & Lukas. My main, roast rump of lamb with homemade mint gravy, was superb. When eating in Bathgate, this is the only place I trust to do things properly - everything fresh, cooked from scratch, no frozen veg & no microwaves pinging in the background. It's not 'fine dining' but they get the basics right, every time. Steaks & burgers are always perfect too. The quality & effort that goes into the food shines through. A cut above the norm for West Lothian.

Took my mum and aunt for Sunday lunch based on the reviews & rating. They both had the Sunday Roast - beef was a bit tough and overcooked and I had Steak Pie which was nothing special. Service was fine up until we had to wait to pay our bill (for too long). Wasn't busy but only one waitress serving. Won't bother going back.

Been many times before and have never been disappointed. Visited again on friday 7/2/14 with the family for my nephews 13th. Everyone enjoyed their food and the staff were very accommodating despite being very busy. The waitress earned every bit of her wages and along with the chefs, should be proud of the service they provide. The bar was busy but at no point was there any noise heard or did it intrude into the restaurant. A firm favourite and I'll continue to visit as much as I can. And the pulled pork was amazing.

I had been told by friends about the delicious food, good service and value for money in this restaurant....I didn't expect it to be as good as it was! Being a vegetarian can be difficult eating out, however not at this restaurant. There was a good few options and I choose the macaroni, which was devine! My daughter had the steak pie and compared it to her Gran's, which has to be taken as a great compliment ;-) Great service and inexpensive, so regular visits are a must....will be having one of the amazing puddings on offer next time!

It has been said in previous reviews this is the best place to eat in Bathgate and I can only endorse this statement. This is by far the best place to eat in Bathgate and surrounding areas. We have dined several times and previously the service has been a hit or a miss but hasn't stopped us returning because of the excellent food. We visited last night with 2 friends and the restaurant was very busy however they have employed a new waitress who was excellent and extremely efficient. The menu is simple with all the usual stuff like burgers, steak, fajitas etc however they always have specials on which gives a bigger selection with more unusual dishes all freshly made. A special mention has to be said about the chips which are absolutely delicious always made from fresh potatoes and never frozen. The manager Colin takes pride in all food presented to his customers which is really lovely to experience. I can't recommend this place highly enough if you are in the area please give it a try and you will definitely not be disappointed.

I got married here in April 2022, from the first meeting Stuart couldn't have been more helpful, we asked for some last minute amends to meals, no issue, there were spare meals on the day due to people not turning up and he dished them out much to my Grandad's delight who put away 6 courses in the end! We also had two guests who were vegan and again, not an issue. We had so many compliments on the food, it was absolutely delicious. We had Razmataz occasions doing the decor/running the day- Andy and Stuart work like a dream team - our day was absolutely perfect. With the two of them in charge, it felt like an expensive hotel wedding but at a fraction of the cost. We were fortunate enough for the weather to be nice so we were able to get out onto the golf course for pictures, Stuart got us a couple of buggies and took us round. The golfers were so kind to let us disturb a couple of their games to let us take pictures. A great venue, with beautiful surroundings and a fantastic team.

After arriving at the coffee shop at 3.30, told that they were closing in half an hour, and if we wanted to sit outside, the tables and chairs would be removed soon, so they could only do take away. That was ok, we only wanted three coffees. Sorry we came in when we did, in hindsight we maybe should have gone to one of the many other coffee shops in Linlithgow, and spent our money there - and sorry for asking how to pronounce the word Neuk.
