A very lovely Mother's Day meal. Like always a very warm welcome when we arrived, the owners and the staff are always very pleasant. The meal was three course with a complementary drink for the Mother! The special menu for the day was not extensive and portions not very big, but the food was very tasty. Loved the starters. Definitely recommend this place.

To be fair, this restaurant has had ups and downs over the years along with management changes. We went for lunch late last year and it was delicious. Went again today, both service and quality were excellent. Our main disappointment was that other than ourselves there were no others dining. The meals are priced appropriately - you get the quality you pay for. We’ve had less quality for higher prices elsewhere in the past. Brechin is lucky to have a hotel and restaurant of this quality. Use it or lose it!

Ate here in January with my mother and a friend... food was very good and nicely presented buy why the chips with everything? Mum's salad was great and our friend's soup of the day was, according to her, excellent. I had lasagne and would have much preferred a larger portion and no chips!

I used the Northern Hotel as a base while waiting for my car. I wanted a full breakfast but had missed the 10:00 cut-off by 15 minutes but the manager had no hesitation in arranging a lovely full Scottish breakfast for me anyway. The food was good, free wifi allowed me to work while I waited and the bar staff were very friendly throughout.

Located within the Northern Hotel so bathrooms are shared. Not particularly appealing to look at as the decor and style of the restaurant is pretty dated. Wooden bar and walls, heavy curtains, wooden tables and bulky wooden chairs. Just didn’t seem comfortable to sit and relax in. Also playing 90s music which I suspect is from a Now CD. Could do with a revamp to make the space more bright and open. Staff were friendly enough but there seemed to be some confusion over who was serving our table. We had three different staff come over and ask us for drinks, and also food. Food itself was nothing amazing, average roast dishes and other meals. The beef we had for the roasts was a bit hard in the middle and the gravy a bit lumpy from thickeners. Would have liked to see more vegetables than one cauliflower and one broccoli floret, and a small handful of carrots and potatoes. Prices were average too.

Went for a meal and was quite disappointed. We visit here now and again and the service and staff is always very good. I had scampi but it was more like a processed mousse that was inside the breadcrumbs than an actual scampi. My wife's food was a bit burnt and welded to the dish. It was mostly edible but not restaurant standard.

Service was good but the meal was shocking. Prawn cocktail certainly wasn't restaurant standard. My steak didn't come as requested and after it had come back from the kitchen it still wasn't cooked the way I had asked for it to be in the first place. My husbands steak wasn't cooked how he had asked it to be either but he didn't ask for it to be taken back. I never ate much of the steak but they still charged me for it, very poor customer service. Obviously anyone can claim to be a chef these days.

Visited here on Saturday evening for a meal for my husbands birthday and really wished we hadn't bothered. The food was a disgrace with far from fresh ingredients being used. The 2 wedges of lemon that were served with my husbands starter were brown and shrivelled up accompanied with brown lettuce. My Cullen Skink was cold. Our main courses arrived, at this point we got up and left leaving them on the table. The service was also nowhere near up to scratch. Please avoid this place if you want to avoid disappointment.

I had the Scampi as a main, it was fine, straight forward dish. My husband had the Cajun Chicken Burger..... It was disgusting, the chicken breast was hard at the ends, when you tapped it with your fork you could hear it echo! The bacon was cremated, when he bit into it, it snapped and crumbled, as for the flavour it was so salty, I tasted it myself...... Not pleasant! Can't see us going back again.

My in-laws have lived nearby for over 15 years and we have eaten here on quite a few occasions (both with them and on our own). We have also stayed in the attached hotel when there has been a big family do (and not enough beds in the cottage). The staff are usually very pleasant and helpful and the food of a generally good standard. We ate here twice on a recent visit. We were particularly pleased by both the standard of the food (excellent starters and main courses - but too full then to have a sweet!) and the willingness of the kitchen to put in extra effort to help my wife, whose dairy intolerance can make eating out difficult on occasions, to have a good range of choice. The good all-round service will see us returning on our next visit to Angus.

Travelling from Glasgow to Aberdeen my husband and I have stopped off at this hotel restaurant on 4 occasions over the period of 3 years. Each time we have gone in on the off chance of getting a table at a weekend without a booking and although busy, we have luckily been successful. You are greeted by friendly welcoming staff who attend to you efficiently and promptly always with a smile. The menu has varied slightly over our visits but consistently over 3 years a selection of home cooked quality meals, beautifully presented at competitive prices has been on offer. Definitely worth taking a detour off the main Dundee to Aberdeen route to sample what Baillie's Restaurant has to offer. I just wish it was on my doorstep but hope to visit again very soon.

We were a table of 8 and when presented with the menus told if one person chose from the Christmas menu we all had to do so! As my first choice of main was not from it I had to make a second. This then proved to be the smallest piece of over cooked salmon I had ever been served. The rest of the company said I would have to fill up with vegetables but it certainly was not the roasties as they were so burnt and hard to be almost inedible. A small piece of not very pleasant Christmas pudding followed. It appears standards have gone down drastically and we will not be returning.

Stopped in for dinner with some work colleagues on Saturday night. Were informed that the fryer was broken so they couldn't make chips. These things happen, but still disappointing.Went for Turkey with all the trimmings (On the specials menu, since it's almost Christmas). Nothing to write home about, 1 slice of turkey breast, 2 slices of grey meat with some sort of stuffing, a couple of barely cooked pigs in blankets, a dollup of stodgy skirlie and, what can only be described as oven cooked frozen roast potatoes. No sprouts, no cranberry sauce, but did get some mediocre parsnips, green beans, butternut squash and boiled potatoes. Did not feel it was worth nearly £15.00. Rest of the party were equally unimpressed with theirs. We didn't go for starters or deserts as we were in a rush to a function. Staff were pleasant enough, but felt like there were too many on when we arrived and they were all just standing at the bar chatting, could have been a little bit more attentive.Feel like the Baillie has been going downhill for a long time now which is a shame, as Brechin really doesn't have many places to sit and eat.

Having been on the road for a few hours and in need of some rest and something to eat, we pulled off the main A90 road. It was just as well that we did. The Hotel restaurant isn't on the A90 roadside but isn't far from it either and the trusty phone map app took us right to the door. There was a main menu and a 'daily special' menu which provided more than enough choice and variety. The meals we chose were delicious and well presented. With adults, teens and the youngest all to keep happy, it can be a tough ask. The meals didn't disappoint with clean plates all round and a unanimous 'delicious' decision on the food. It's listed on here as ££ and it isn't the cheapest place to eat in the area but that's relative. There is a 'popular' roadside restaurant nearby with meals at similar prices but the warmth, comfort, service and food quality made the Baillie restaurant a much better choice with the meals being good value. In short, it's well worth visiting if you're in Brechin and looking for some traditional food that's good quality and good value for money. P.S. The 2015 Christmas and Hogmanay specials menu looks fantastic!

This was the second time in as many months that we have eaten at the Baillie as a group, this time of 10. The first really pleasing thing was to find that the manager had stocked some Scottish craft gins, including Hendricks, which was something I had mentioned they could do with in my previous reveiw. Needless to say we availed ourselves freely, staff even went to the trouble of insuring each gin came with the appropriate accompaniment. We were seated at a circular table slightly laid back from the rest of the room which suited us and, to be fair, probably the other customers as we were pretty noisy. Service once again was speedy and polite. Our food arrived in good time my starter of king prawn and black pudding was delicious as was the venison that followed it. No-one in our party had a complaint in respect of the food, all were very happy. Given that not all our party had a starter, we wanted to pay for our meals and drinks seperately rather than together which can be a pain for a lot of restaurants but not for the staff at the Baillie who couldn't be more obliging. The Baillie continues to improve and is a great local restaurant to have in Brechin and we'll continue to return both as a coiuple and for group meals out.

Living, as we do, just round the corner from the Baillie restaurant we have found ourselves going back regularly after not having been for a number of years. We actually booked a Christmas night out with friends on the back of two excellent meals we've had there and, once again, weren't disappointed. On every occassion we have eaten there the food has been excellent. Sure when the restaurant is very busy(and it often is- always a good sign in itself) the service can be a bit slow but I can forgive that because the food here is head and shoulders better than anything else on offer in Brechin. What's more important is that it is improving every time we go back. The food is reasonably priced, as is the wine list, and it is consistent which is what a good local needs to be. It could do with a Scottish craft gin behind the bar but that is my only minor quibble and wouldn't hesitate to recommend the restaurant to any visitors- or locals who may not have been in a while.

Having been to the nothern hotel restaurant before and receiving terrible service my friend and I decided to try again recently the food was a good standard unfortunately I can't say the same about the staff. Our first waitress was rude when taking food order, we were not asked if we wanted more drinks during our meal the when asked if we wanted dessert we both opted not too we then sat for 40mins with no offer of drinks, tea or coffee or even our bill when we asked for our bill again staff were rude when speaking to usA week later I found myself there again with my partner once again the food was a good standard but again rude waitresses ruined our meal. Our first waitress was pleasant in taking our order but found ourselves with the same waitress as week before serving us after that. We waited for 20 mins for someone to take our dirty dishes away from main course was asked if we wanted dessert we asked to see menu I myself picked something but after a further almost 20 mins waiting on her coming back to see if I wanted anything we asked for our bill and left. The food in the restaurant has always been good if anything a little pricy for something's which are not all fresh ingredients but never the less it is presented well and tastes good but I feel staff need to learn service with a smile, politeness, attentiveness these I believe are aspects of being a waitress and they are important to ensure that people have a pleasant experience. It's safe to say until customer service is improved I will not be back nor will I recommend it to friends

Having been disappointed last time we visited I wasn't sure what to expect. What a difference, a friendly welcome, menus provided and drinks order taken within minutes. Food order taken as soon as they saw us close the menus. While service has been very poor on previous visit this was not an issue today - all helpful and friendly. Had a bit of a wait for the food but think this a good sign as clearly being made to order. Husband had the lamb loin and really enjoyed. I had the salmon florentine from the daily specials, absolutely delicious! Husband was amazed as I very seldom manage to finish the whole plateful when we're out. Served with chips, broccoli and cauliflower in a white sauce. Plates cleared quickly and dessert to coffee offered - sadly no room left. This restaurant will be going back onto our favourites list.

Oh dear... Having dined & worked in many many restaurants/bars over the years, I return to my home town and pop to the Northern for a quiet meal and friendly hospitality. Food usually very good and of excellent quality, so had no worries on that score. But, where oh where, did your waitresses get their attitude from???I could go into details, but I won't and neither will I name the waitress. But To The Manager of The Northern - PLEASE PLEASE for your own sake and the reputation of your establishment. GET SOME HAPPIER, MORE POLITE STAFF. My observations that evening were minor... Things that could easily have been very quickly remedied.Yet I was made to feel stupid; made out to be a liar; and spoken to and looked at, like I was an idiot. Rude and bad mannered, doesn't come close...It costs nothing to be made to feel welcome and show professionalism in your work. Your waitress showed none of these, I'm afraid. Needless to say, when I return home again I'll pop in for a meal, but if 'Little Miss Attitude' is serving - I'll be going elsewhere.

I visited for lunch in a party of four on 14 September 2013. Three of us ordered burgers. When I looked at mine I noted the bottom of the bun was pink, I cut the burger in half and saw that it was not cooked on the inside. I pointed this out to a staff member and requested that it be cooked more. It was taken away and after waiting 5 minutes she returned to tell me that the chef was cooking a new order for me. After waiting quite some time my new burger arrived, by this time the others had finished eating. I cut into my second burger to find that it was even more under cooked than the first one. By this time I was past enjoying my meal and none of the staff came to check the second meal until it was obvious that we were ready to go. I again pointed out the raw meat. The waitress apologised, removed the plate returning to say that I would not be charged for my meal. I was very dissatisfied and it affected the whole group.

Went for lunch on Sunday. Excellent food all round. No complaints. We had pork, chicken curry and a chicken dish with garlic king prawns. All very tasty.

Staying at the hotel and hadn't made a reservation. Found it was quite busy but had no trouble getting seated. Staff were quite friendly. The food was excellent and good value for money. Would definitely recommend the steak pie with veggies, excellent.

So, if you read any of my other reviews on www.yelp.com, you would find that there was a terrible disappointment in the steak restaurants where our old love of Morton's in Beverly Hills had changed hands and no longer made the steaks of my dreams. Well, in all of the unlikely places, HERE in Brechin, Angus did I fall in love again with the perfect steak. It was so good, we came back the next night just to see if it was a happy mistake or if the Chef really could cook a steak. Both nights the Chef on duty was Lisa Brull, who is a local from Angus. She made my fillet perfectly and the rest of our party on both nights had equally exquisite dining. My husband strongly recommends the mixed grill. My daughter has sampled Lasagna all over and swears by this place also. We were lucky enough on the second night to have mussels as an appetizer and it was scrumptious. Don't overlook this place - check that this Chef is on and your meal will be superb!

The standard of food here is always good though the last few months the service tends to be a little slow mainly due to lack of staff Always appears clean and nice surroundings well worth a try

Husband and I went for lunch. We're asked had we booked, said no and were told we could have a table away on the side of the restaurant. There were about 2 tables already occupied and no other diners arrived while we were there! There seemed to be ample staff given the number of diners but service was slow. The menu plus the specials was excellent, something for everyone. We ordered main courses only, one from the specials and one from the main menu. My husband's lamb dish wasn't great - lamb overcooked and overpowered by the mint in the dish, pea purée with mint and mashed potato with mint a bit OTT. The dish had clearly sat under heat for a time as everything had a bit of a crust on it. I had Cajun salmon - no real issues, it was pleasant but would have preferred fresh sour cream rather than what appeared to be double with some lemon juice to sour it. There is a lot of potential in this restaurant, management need to ask their staff to review their customer service.

A pity the service here is lacking because the lunch we had was superb! We were shown to our table then appeared to be forgotten about, my husband went to the bar but not a waitress in sight, he waited until one appeared then asked if we could be served. Excellent menu, a bit pricey but we really enjoyed our choices. My husband had three meat roast, pork, beef & lamb, I had minted lamb, all delicious & generous portions, I also recommend pear & almond tart with vanilla sauce for dessert! The restaurant wasn't packed so the service should have been much better.

Decided to take my wife out for a meal locally so that we could have a short walk to restaurant and enjoy a couple of drinks with our meal. To start on the positives.....food was very good & restaurant has a lovely atmosphere but that's the positives! I have heard that service can be bad but I thought deciding to dine early evening on a Saturday that they would be staffed to cater for what should be a busy service? Not the case. Sitting for 5 minutes before popping up to bar to ask if order for drink could be made. Followed by long, long waiting for meal to arrive. The restaurant was I would say, a third full for sittings at most and time for starter then gap for mains to arrive was shocking. Did not honestly bother me that much as we were in no hurry but poor, poor service. Sat also for very long periods without drink & found it quite amusing after a while. A real shame as food standard was excellent & staff are friendly but really need some attention to front of house!!

We live locally and eat here regularly because we like the food and decor. However, the service is erratic, even by Scottish standards. Some staff are poorly trained, forgetful and inattentive: chatting at the bar while you're waiting for drinks or the bill; huffing and puffing when you point out an error; avoiding eye contact lest you ask for something. It's such a shame. It should be so easy to sort out.

A varied menu at reasonable prices . Stater was good and an ample serving size. Mains were equally good standard with accompanying sides. Wine modestly priced and service all round was fine . This establishment provides an atmosphere that is welcoming and warm.

We went to the Baillie Restaurant for a family dinner and would definitely go back again. The friendly staff made us welcome from the start and the food was excellent. The menu had plenty of choice so everyone was happy and the portions were a good size. Just enough room left for the pudding, the banana pavlova is amazing! There is a well stocked bar and we were seated at a big table in the window bay, this gave us a bit of privacy for our party but still kept us as part of the fine atmosphere in the restaurant. It's one of the best meals I've had in Angus and would definitely recommend it.

I was served by a very rude young man named ryanm99, he was very immature and at one point stood on one of the tables and done something he called “cube mouth”, the food was also awful and gave me the skitters.

Gorgeous battered chicken fillets and a fresh fillet of fish. The service was superb and the quality of the food was second to none. We even managed to get a portion of scraps. Best fish and chips we’ve both had in a long time and reasonably priced in comparison to Aberdeen.

Attached to the Forfar Golf Driving Range, this cafe/restaurant is always busy and, for some reason, despite it being carpeted, is usually quite noisy! The menu is fairly standard with filled rolls, sandwiches, paninis, soup, baked potatoes etc. Prices are reasonable and the service is usually very good. It is light and airy due to the large windows at one end. I like it in part, as I can see the rural house I grew up in from it in the distance.
