Oh boy, what an institution. The best fish and chips that I still remember from going to Southend in the 60's aged about 9 or 10 with my parents, I'm in my 60's now ! Though that was the original Bailey's fare. Went again quite recently, to find business had been sold. The food is still very good, but not as good as with the original owners.

We frequently visit Southend and this is the only place we get out Haddock and chips from, always good food. We have on occasion got it elsewhere only to be disappointed, so we made a rule not to stray again as this is the best

Southend is full of fish and chip shops, and we had tried a few before tonight and though this place may look nondescript it serves up some of the best chips I have ever had!!!!So soft and creamy inside a coat of crisp batter. Will be definitely going back to try the fish. A definite star. If you want the best chips go here. and the portion size is great as well.

This is a local independent 70 year old business. This is not a sparkly modern establishment but does do amazing food. The interior is original Art Deco style which could do with some attention but is is original and not a modern plastic facade with no character. It is very odd how the new chip shop right next door which was previously not a chip shop got planning permission. My wife and I have used this chip shop for many years and it will remain our chip shop of choice when in this part of Southend

On a spur of the moment day out in Southend, we were recommended to this uninspiring looking fish and chip shop by some locals. The owner Sonny was really friendly, having only just reopened after lockdown, and he explained to us his plans for refurbishment. So onto the fish...superb, huge portion and beautifully cooked. Delicious chips, fishcakes, and definitely an excellent choice. For me nothing can ever equal the magnificent Chez Fred in Westbourne, but if it’s tasty fish and chips in Southend you are after, then this is the place!

We returned to Bailey's to have fish and chips and what a marked improvement on my last visit. We had two cod, one portion of chips that was more than enough for the two of us and all for the princely sum of £13.00.The fish, like the chips, was freshly cooked and there was no taste of oil. The fish was white and tasted very fresh and was served up with a smile and in good time.

My plan all day was to eat fish & chips on the front at Southend. I'm sad like that, as fish & chips by the seaside still rocks my boat. Was a March afternoon though, and along the main promenade the chippies were all shut. About to give up when I came to Bailey's Fry Inn at the east end, which was, fist pump, open for business. That's a big tick from me--they make the effort. Had to wait for the fish to fry, always a good thing. Pleasant young woman served me a long piece of lush, piping hot battered fish, on some less hot chips, which I carried out and ate on a bench, gazing over the estuary. It was proper fish & chips, and, for a while, I felt very happy. Good on you, Bailey's, you were there for me. ;

We went about 2pm on Weds 27th Feb 19. There was a queue as the poor solo girl had been left to somehow cope alone. She was running to the back to cut fish, and was about to run out of chips. Some potential customers just left. She also had to run the restaurant. We waited patiently whilst she cut, then freshly cooked our superb cod and chips which we ate on the beach in beautiful 23 centigrade sunshine. Shame on the owner, well done the young girl!

On arrival we waited a very long time to get served. We didn’t get our drinks so we ended up making our hot drinks in their kitchen ourselves. Two strangers from the public were let into the kitchen without putting their hair up or washing their hands and they made our food very quickly and poorly. The 1 member of staff dropped cooking tools and picked them up and used them again. When I finally got my food some of the orders were wrong, didn’t turned up and tasted horrible(undercooked). When asking for a refund the staff member complained at me and when he finally gave me half of a refund he slammed the money on the counter and takes at me with attitude. This use to be the best chip in Southend now it's the worst, this was my second visit since new owners & both times have been bad now I will never return. Only gave 1 star because staff were polite but the food was nasty, decor in the shop outdated & dirty, meat products under & over cooked, chips (how can you make chips wrong) what I got served was moldy black chips!? You expect the odd one to stand out half the bag of chips were fit for the bin, I would have binned the lot but this chip shops prices are sky high so I just picked the decent ones. The service was terrible, had to remind the waitress that we had not been served as the " Cook " was busy on his phone. My Nan considered this the best Chip shop in Southend, She would be so upset to see the place now - God rest her. My family and I decided to get some fish & chips and eat in. Our food came followed by a Polystyrene cup filled with baked beans. When we said we were still waiting for our cups of tea we were told that we should have made it ourselves (talk about having a dog and bark yourself). Anyway I managed to knock over the cup of beans. The staff saw the mess but continually walked past without any offer of a cloth or help but was happy to watch me using a tiny serviette to clear it up. Come on “Baileys” – Customer service, Sack your staff and start again! On the Plus side my wife said her fish was lovely, unlike my pie which was luke warm. I Don't think we will be returning.

Visited Southend again on Good Friday and my partner and I thought we would give it another try, sat int he restaurant and our order was taken, waited quite a while for just a saveloy and chips, when it came it looked ok on the plate but again the saveloy had no taste and the chips were very hard at each end, cup of tea was £1.10 in a little cup with no saucer, so thought that a bit expensive, overall I have tried it twice and would not go back I am sorry to say. We fancied a fish & chip lunch and decided to try Baileys, really wish we had looked elsewhere. Unsure of the procedure for ordering we went in and sat at what looked a bit like a pasting table on some incredibly ricketty chairs. A lady came up with a notepad to enquire what we had ordered, we told her we hadn't placed our order so she directed us to the counter. Seeing as she had the notepad in her hand, it might have been a nice touch if she had taken our order. Not only do you order your food at the counter, you collect your own drinks and cutlery. The cutlery is placed in containers wit the fork prongs and knife blades facing upwards, so when you collect your knife and fork it is highly likely you will touch others ,which to me is really unhygenic. I also was sitting facing the back of two other male customers who didn't feel it necessary to put their tops back on which, again, was a bit off putting. I wish I could say the food made up for it but although the portions were very generous, the batter was too crispy and quite hard to cut through in places. The general feeling we got was that they have this space at the back of the shop so they might as well let people sit there. Apart from a young guy who bought us our food and said good bye as we left, no one else seemed to care about their customers at all.

Walked into this place before we walked further up the promenade, and bitterly regretted it. The staff were surly, at best. The food was average. Very average. I ordered 'an extra large' cod and chips. My local chip shop in London would have sold that as a 'small'. For £8.50 a portion, I would have expected a much bigger fish, and a much larger portion of chips. The worst part of our lunch were the toilets. DIRTY! There was a huge plastic bin of peeled potatoes soaking in water, and other potatoes lying haphazardly around the floor. There were pieces of cod lying on worktops uncovered. If we had seen this before we ordered our food, we'd have walked straight out. Our advice : walk a bit further up the promenade, even if you're very hungry.

Now the not so good bit. The tables weren't cleared and they were mostly dirty. The toilets have already been described in an earlier review which was spot on, they were terrible and right next to the barrels of raw chips. I given it a 3 rating because the food was ok but it was touch and go between that and a 2. I would probably give it a swerve if you were thinking of going there. And it has changed ownership.

As you can see from my previous review I used to love this place but what on earth has happened to it ? Nine of us walked the length of the seafront to come here on Tuesday evening as I said it would be worth it. I said it might be hard to get a table as it is ( was ) so popular. There were three people waiting for food and tables stacked high with dirty dishes. We should have just gone somewhere else but unfortunately we stayed. Chips were still nice but where shall I start ? The normal sized cod came first and it was huge. We questioned this as two of us had ordered the extra large ones. No, they said that was a normal size even though it was practically hanging off the plate. So my husband tucked in. Pies were ok as not baked there. The two extra large cods were smaller than my husbands. Again, I questioned this and the boy came back and said they were the extra large ones. The 4 and 6 year old ordered the kids meal of sausage and chips which was one sausage and a mountain of chips which they could never hope to eat and I think it cost £4 something. What is that all about.? I have never been in their toilets before but this time one of the little ones needed to go and they were absolutely abysmal. You could always rely on Baileys when you visited Southend. What a shame.

This traditional & established chippy has been taken over ...and is disappointing. To wait for at least 25 minutes for or a cod and a haddock meal with a tea & coffee, mid/late-afternoon and post-rush was both saddening and bewildering. Finding a wiped/clean table was a challenge at which we failed - as was dodging the flies whilst watching the lack-lustre staff shuffle about (on a long un-swept floor) lowered our enjoyment of a hitherto happy day. My partner noticed an obnoxious, rotting pong - she reckoned to be either associated with death or, more charitably, the derelict, post-flooded pub next door. Whilst the food was alright, fresh & generously portioned with a welcomed lemon wedge each, I'm not convinced that the staff's hearts are in their business & thus I'll neither recommend nor return to this once fine seafront caff

My brother-in-law always made a bee-line for this place so when we wanted fish and chips in Southend this is the only place we wanted to go. When we walked in there were loads of flies on the wall and none of the staff wearing hair nets, the floor and tables were filthy. We would have walked out except that we had such a good recommendation. So we ordered and sat down. Everyone got their food except my mum who was waiting for ten minutes. She got her mushy peas which were stone cold. When she complained the staff were really ungracious, they didn't care at all. My dad cut into his chicken burger and loads of grease oozed out. It made me feel sick but I tried a bite of my cheese burger anyway. It was absolutely disgusting, just greasy and tasteless I couldn't eat it. My friend couldn't eat her fish either, it made her sick. I think all anyone ate were the chips and we all walked out feeling green. I literally have nothing nice to say about this place. Well... fish & chips are as bountiful on Southend seafront as the site of tanning pensioners with their 99 and flakes, so it won't take much for anyone planning a chip butty to walk another 10 metres down the street. Once you enter this bizarre 'restaurant' and shuffle past the narrow gap between a line of soon-to-be disappointed punters and a greasy tiled wall, you are given the choice of where to sit in the rows of uncomfortable chairs and half corroded tables. After an unusually long wait for a plate of sad looking chips and a gnarly chunk of fish, your next challenge begins. The frequent clicking noise echoing the fluorescent room isn't a Michelin star chef directing his waiters but the sound of blue bottle carcasses raining down from the bug zapper above and dive bombing onto your plate. Who doesn't need a little extra protein anyway? So, you've got your seat, eaten your grub and now you need to empty your bladder after sticking to the bottled water for hydration, god forbid you drink anything already open to the air. You'll be directed through a white door where before you reach the cramped and uninviting outhouse of a loo, you'll have to shimmy past the dangerously slippery starch water blanketing the floor and a grease-clad potato boy loading up the rumbling machines. It is only after you have seen it in all its glory that you will, like I have, vow never to set foot in here again.

I visited here with our family after reading some good reviews,We walked in and found a table, Forgot a couple of things on our order, but sorted this quickly,Chips were ok? Kids meals were ok too, but towards the end, found a eyelash on a chip!!!!! And my daughter had a long dark hair in hers.Completely put us off and we left! Needless to say nobody there is wearing a hair net at all.Found ourselves quite disappointed, and won't be returning. Also two of us have had bad stomachs aches a few hours after eating. Sorry but we won't be returning I'm afraid.....

We try to visit Southend when ever the weather is OK out of season just for the walk along the coast, get some fresh air which makes you hungry and then always end up in Bailey's for our sit down fish and chips. We are pensioners and always choose their pensioners special which includes fish and chips, buttered bread roll and a cup of tea for £5.50 which is a bargain. The portion size is very good and is always fresh and cooked to order. We have been visiting this place for many years and will agree with the many bad comments regarding the location and state of the WC's but disagree with the poor comments regarding the staff. We have alway been made welcome and served by pleasant staff and the place is always busy which speaks volumes for the place and look forward to returning again before the summer season starts.

We used to visit Baileys as a family many years ago. Being in Southend visiting an exhibition I suggested to the other club members I was with that we should try here. As other reviewers have said it needs a make over. Thankfully none of us needed to use the toilets however through the open door to the rear we got a blow by blow account of a waitresses recent experience whilst she was on her phone. Take it outside or turn it off I suggest. Can't say we were made to feel welcome. Place your order at the far end of the counter. Collect your cutlery and take a seat. I can't really speak of how the others really felt as I paid for all the meals they weren't going to be rude. I will say the chip portions were excessive . I asked for a large cod, which it was but the batter was too thick and hard for my liking and the meat inside was not that tasty. I would not return here. For the same money you could eat far better.

Best fish and chips though I agree with other reviewers that the place could do with a makeover and the toilet is appalling but it is a fish and chip shop. Just enjoy the food.

Been here a few times the food is nice but the resturant needs a lick of paint new chairs and a better toilet than being out the back past the chip machine \ cold store. Food 8/10 ambience 4/10 worth a take away

Food was poor and cold. Staff were miserable, especially the grumpy rude owner. Asked if there was a placs to change our baby and the waitress told us she would clear a counter for us to use, mid change the miserable owner approached us ane began to tell us off for doing it there, standing there watchig til we had finished changing her, even though we were told we could do it there! The toilets are in the garden and you have to walk through the kitchen where the food is prepared to get there, if id have known this before i wouldnt of eaten there. The kitchen is dirty and messy, the restaurant is out dated and has a bad atmosphere, the food was poor and greasy, and the staff were rude and miserable. DONT EAT HERE!

In my quest to discover the perfect seaside chip, I do highly recommend Bailey's. Whilst the decor and staff may be in need of renovation, the food itself is very good indeed. The portions are a good size, with the chips with a crunchy outside and squishy inside. Would highly recommend!

We have been coming here for years when at Southend and now we live locally are regulars. Often it is just a bag of chips walking down the front and it does not matter that there is always a queue (a good sign), it is here we come. Always freshly cooked and tasty. I suppose the décor is a little dated but we are not eating that !!!

We had fish n chips all round with a bottle of pop. The portion size was good and very filling. The fish was very fresh but quite a lot of batter. All in a nice meal at a fair price

Went for fish and chips after spending a lovely day at Adventure Island. The food was mediocre but freshly cooked. The decor is in need of updating and a deep clean wouldn't go a miss. If you are going to take your children make sure they don't speak above a whisper. Also do not encourage them to play on the football table provided as the older clientele appear to have have forgotten what it's like to have children! This is not a children friendly restaurant.

Love this place! Their x large cod and chips is enough for three people and you can telephone your order through so it's ready and you don't have a problem parking. The food is delicious and they always cook fresh. You can eat in or take away and Staff are always friendly. Best Fish and Chips in town!

Visited Southend at the weekend with the family and had a fantastic day! The sun was shining, the seafront was packed and of course fish n chips at Baileys! The family love it and have been coming for years! Again we were throughly satisfied with the massive portions, delicious fish and chips and friendly, dedicated staff! Back soon Bailey's!

Came here years ago for fish and chips and it was tasty. Went yesterday with a fiend and just had chips sat outside in the sun. I have to say despite the reviews here the chips were perfect and I couldn't fault them.

Went to Baileys as when I was a child we always used to have their fish and chips as a take-away on a Saturday lunchtime. This is the first time have sat in to eat here. Staff very friendly. The eating area is serviceable but a bit lacking in atmosphere - bring your own! Chips were excellent, cod was nicely moist and flakey but could have been a little more flavoursome. Same for the Rock. Childrens' portions very generous. Would return but probably for take-away instead of eating in.

A visit to Baileys was a must when visiting Southend-on-Sea but I was soooooo disappointed after our visit there on Tuesday. In the past it was always full and a had a nice atmosphere I would always recommend it to friends but after my last visit I won't be eating there again. The fish and chips were dry the toilets are in need of a good clean and staff need training.

Not the place (forgive the pun) it used to be. I haven’t been to Baileys for a number of years and was bitterly disappointed yesterday. The plaice used to be bigger than the plate, mine was small tasteless, spongy and greasy. Definitely trading on past glories

nothing really to discuss. The name above the door remains the same as back in the 70s, 80s, 90, when the food use to be very nice and the best Fish and Chips in Southend.Today the food is greasy and run by forigners of very poor quality. I have given the place a second try with no improvement thus i would not recommend as no better

Like many others I have been coming here for over 20 years. A hidden little gem of a fish and chip shop. An interior that probably hadn't changed for 100 years. Even the little animated fisherman in the window with his net lol. Sadly it has changed hands. Out with all the old staff and in with the new. The food is now terrible and the atmosphere has gone. So sad when these things change...

This is NO longer regarded as a number one fish and chip shop of southend sea front. HAIR IN MY FOOD! Chips dry. Fish old. Just don't bother. The staff all hate the new manager. Even though when asked he wanted us to believe he'd been there 9 years. . . Not realising some of us there had been going since toddler age. Not worth the effort or the time. Plus to have staff argue between themselves in front of me about prices and how some staff think it's unfair they have gone up and make me wait longer to place my order is just disgusting. Keep walking past.

Good fried fish and ample portions, but plates so small made selection of eating difficult until more room made on plate. Tables and chairs something out of the 1950's. Service a little on the surly side.

Down here on business, we had previously eaten at Oldham's after being advised it was the best fish shop in Southend on Sea - Wrong!!! It's not very often my good lady will rave about the nations most popular take-away meal, but the fare we consumed at Baileys was simply perfect, being based in the Bard's County (Warwickshire) we simply cannot find a really good fish shop until you wander over to Weldon's @ Eye, Nr. Peterborough, at Baileys our Cod & Chips we superb, Light Crispy Batter, Succulent, Firm-Fleshed Cod, and Chips that were actually tasty! What more can be said? The good news is that we are back in Southend on business fairly soon, guess where we will be dining???? Wonderful.

We always go to Bailey's when we are in Southend and today did not dissapoint. Delicious freshly cooked cod and Chips. Very generous portions and lovely friendly staff. Everywhere else along the seafront had very loud music and drinking. Bailey's is quiter and more suitable for families. The toilets were fine today but it's not the toilet we go there for its the food !

12/4/14:-Fish overcooked, informed the staff and their response was "ok" NO apology, no offer of any refund. Both the "cook" and waiteress came across rude. Toilet rolls were soaking wet, tap was constantly on, water dripping from underneath the sink, wet floor in the back (anyone could slip over as there are no warning signs)would have expected better from a well known restaurant.Overall I will never be eating in there again.

The parking machine wasn’t working, so the staff member told me it’s okay I can go ahead and order my breakfast, if I get a parking ticket to bring it back in and they will have it cancelled. I got the ticket, brought it in and have now been informed that the policy has changed and I will have to pay the £75 parking fine. I also contacted Wetherspoon head office, who said it was my responsibility, even though the machine wasn’t working at the time and their staff member told me to stay.

They had on a event that they wanted families to come to. Someone had fainted. The paramedics had asked for a chair for the person. Some drunk thought someone was stealing his chair and started swearing in front of a young child and trying to cause a fight. When the someone was getting a chair that was asked for by the ambulance staff and when the incident occurred the bar staff did nothing. There was no bouncer or manager around. The guy should of been barred for life. In weatherspoon he would of have been. When someone asked the bar staff said although they allow children, they can't control customer's language, The drunk seemed to be working for the pub on the night and someone mentioned he was the DJ for the night. No manager got involved, bar staff watching and doing nothing. The guy who was swearing and wanted to fight should be banned or sacked. What decent human denies something that has been asked for by a paramedic!

We visited the Strand Tea room as it was the most traditional place in Leigh on Sea, The bread pudding and custard was home made and tasted wonderful. We chatted to the owner and he told us about the history of the area and that this tea room was an original building. Great coffee and lovely and quirky in a good way.
