Babar Elephant in Wigan

Some friends introduced me to this restaurant, and I'm so glad that they did. Needs a. makeover, but food is out've this world...

Always good food and reasonable price too. Going there for a sit down meal in a couple of weeks 🥳👍

Comimos en este restaurante dos veces en febrero. Ambos fueron un sábado por la noche. Uno fue a las 7 pm y otro a las 5 pm. Encontramos que la sesión de las 7 pm estaba mucho más ocupada y tuvimos que esperar para sentarnos. Esto tomó alrededor de 15 minutos. No mucho tiempo. Luego waa rápidamente servía bebidas y popadoms. Desde allí colocamos nuestros entrantes. Tenía el entrante mezclado. Esto fue brillante. Los entrantes se sirvieron en alrededor de 15-30 minutos en ambas ocasiones. Seguido por nuestro plato principal que llegó unos 20 minutos después de los entrantes pur. Una vez más no es una espera demasiado larga. El personal era muy amable y servicial y la comida sabía increíble. Mi exótico Masala de Ajo era agradable, pero podría haber utilizado un poco más de un ajo. Aparte de eso no hay quejas. Ambas noches recibimos un servicio excepcional.

Fantastic food, service could have done with improvement as not attentive staff, waiting a while for ordering parts of food, and food not bought out in one go for a party of 6... Really missing a lounge area for a relaxing drink at the end of the meal, this isn't a must for all but for myself and party is a perk.

Food was perfect as usual, quiet clearly hadn't booked us in. Should have stated so on arrival, instead of getting us to order drinks knowing fine well they hadn't booked us in. On booking I was told we couldn't have an earlier seating as they were busy, so opted for a later seating only to be stood at the bar as a party of 6 with a 8 year old for 20 minutes. Rushed us through from start to finish, serving our starters when we hadn't even finished our poppadoms

I've always been a massive fan of this place but was left disappointed on my last visit.. The meat in every dish was dry, which for me ruins it.. My missus also ordered a tikka masala, and it was tasteless.. They're gonna have to pull some magic out the bag if I visit again!

Fuimos con nuestros hijos y nietos para Nochevieja. Un servicio encantador de principio a fin. Sin embargo, nuestra experiencia no fue la mejor. Estábamos apurados por la comida, los poppadoms llegaron cuando estábamos sentados. Los camareros preguntaban sin descanso si queríamos más bebidas. Los entrantes eran diminutos, nunca había visto samosas tan pequeñas, las porciones de arroz de setas eran tan pequeñas. Tuve balti de verduras con 3 trozos de verdura en una deliciosa salsa. Pedimos un café, alguien dijo que podríamos tomar uno en el bar y luego alguien más dijo que no. Habíamos esperado por tanto tiempo, tan decepcionante

Awesome food,great staff, brilliant evening

Fantastic food yet again, lovely to see it always so busy but with great food and great service I'm not surprised.

We have been to a number of Indian restaurants and most recently Rivaj for many years but live close to this location and vaguely knew the owner from other restaurant business. The table for 5 I felt pushed near the window so the 5th person facing a column with no one able to sit opposite hence I changed seats with my nephew so he felt engaged to our conversations. Meal - The flavours are the best I have tasted for many years and this was impressive. My meal - was not warm and you could tell it had been sitting for the other meals to be ready. I’ve always had a hot meal at other restaurants like Rivaj and this was very disappointing. My family the other 4 had hot meals so I did feel like this was a let down for me Most of my guests had rice but I wanted chips. They had been served on a stainless steel plate and a very small portion. Overall I wanted to say 100% but due to my poor meal , not flavours that was lovely but only like warm very slightly warm not hot at all. I am not an awkward customer but when spending over £180 I did want a hot meal. Would we visit again , yes

A little out of the way, but if you want great, authentic Indian food, then go no further. Once part of a chain, I've been in them all. The Elephant, The Blue Elephant, The Baby Elephant and Babar. I was late to the party so short of time to order. Elephant Tak Tik to start, Himalayan Ghost signature dish for main, Pashwari rice and the usual poppadoms and Nans. Great food, great company and a great night.

First visit to the baby elephant husband got curry very bland no taste, we felt rushed pushed into eating food quick, They was to eager to get us off table, wont be coming again

Great food and great service everytime I come. If you want a reliable and the best curry in the area then this is the place.

Went this afternoon very empty on arrival. Set menu was on offer however just wanted chicken shaslick. So we ordered off the main menu. Food was tasty but definitely not full size portions. Disappointed really as we paid full price. We’ve been on Saturdays and the shaslick was a different experience; it came on a sizzling hot plate and lots of chicken.

My wife and I popped up from the Malvern to Billings to see my sister and brother in law. We were delighted to learn that we had been booked into the Baba on Saturday evening. I have eaten here several times over the last few years and the food quality is exceptional. We were not disappointed on Saturday. The food, service and general ambience, was first class. The fish my wife had was superb. My garlic chilli chicken was beautiful. Me and my brother in law stayed on for cocktails. What a fabulous evening. Thank you to all the hard working staff at Babar Elephant for making it a meal, and night, to cherish and remember. All the best to you all. Ps, just revisited this place with my wife. As per usual the food and staff were 10/10. I am from the West Midlands. I must say that virtually no Asian eatery I ve been in, in 50 years, has matched the Babar Elephant. This is my second favourite place to have a curry in the UK, after Indis in Westbourne, Dorset.

Me and a few girls from work went for food and drinks on Thursday 1st August. They had a fantastic 2 course meal deal for £15.99 I think. We booked our table for 5pm we had a drink and poppadoms first then we orderd our meal. Food came quick. Food was really tasty and decent sized portion we couldn't eat it all. We had finished our 2 course by 6.10pm we ordered more drinks and then we got desert girls had ice cream I had Martini Espresso. Next thing we know it's 8.40pm. We had our food and drinks outside as the weather was really nice and we knew we would be loud with all the laughing we do. Was a fantastic night. So much so I booked our next visit before we left. Waiting on staff were fantastic really attentive up for a laugh and a joke with you. Especially Hasam who was really friendly and chatty.

This Bengali owned restaurant not an indian restaurant for anyone who has this misconception. We had absolutely worst experience dining here. We went in and ordered chicken karahi & they served us jalfrezi and when we said its incorrect order they argued with some lame explanation of spices blend and different region having different food. For all we know is that whole subcontinent has one chicken karahi and has got no capsicum, uncooked tomato and chewy meat. We also ordered lamb chops which were tasteless, cold and chewy almost felt like i was eating rubber.We had a coke & pineapple juice as well to my surprise had more ice than actual thing that we ordered and pineapple juice tasted stale as if it were expired. Our experience was beyond terrible and we end up spending £37.00 for this terrible food which i would never have eaten even if i were paid to eat. ....PLEASE DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE ITS NOT WORTH IT......

Llegué comprobado de nuevo «sí podemos hacer pollo sin especias» Llegó la comida, recubierta de pimentón, degustación de especias. Les preguntamos, ‘lo lavamos’, así que dijimos que esto no es claro como prometiste. Lo preocupante aquí es qué pasa si se trata de una persona con anafilaxia, y ‘lavaron’ algo y luego la persona muere porque confiaron en el establecimiento cuando aseguraron que podían hacer un pollo simple. SI hubieran sido honestos y hubieran dicho perdón todo ya está marinado entonces esa persona habría comido antes de llegar para no estropear la velada para el resto de la familia. Este restaurante necesita educar sobre intolerancias alimentarias y alergias antes de que alguien muera

We are new to the area, and were on the hunt for a new Indian takeaway - having read the incredible reviews we decided to give Babar Elephant a go! Oh my goodness, this is the best Indian we’ve had. The chicken is cooked to perfection - so tender. The flavours are vibrant and delicious. The bhajis and naans were so tasty (and not soggy!) . All of our meals were piping hot. The service was friendly when we arrived to collect our order. What more can you ask for! We will definitely be ordering from here again.

Excellent restaurant in a such calm village. I am quite surprised by their service which is extraordinary. They were so kind, excellent atmosphere. You may also get suggestions from the menu. Must try in your life. Don’t forget to taste the papad with mango chutney finger licking good.

Me, my partner and my parents visited the restaurant on Sunday 12th May. We were greeted by a lovely waiter, who presented us with our menus. This was our first time at the restaurant, and with me and my mum having Coeliac disease, I explained to the waiter that we both cannot eat wheat, barley or gluten. After explaining this, he took note, told his manager (Standard behaviour). We placed our order, and within no time at all (quite worrying really) our food was infront of us. Me and my mum chose the Exotic Chicken - description quite simple... char grilled chicken with onions, Peppers and spices. (And yes I double checked with the waiter as I ordered the food, that what we had chosen was definitely gluten free, to which he replied yes). All 4 main meals came out warm (not hot). Service seemed to be in a rush. Weird really seen as it wasn't overly busy. Unfortunately both me and my mum took ill. My mum straight after the food, to the point my dad had to rush her home, and me around 15 minutes after the food. We won't be going back here, for the sheer ignorance of how much of an impact this has had. No gluten free beers. The chef clearly requires re educating around allergies, coeliac disease (not an allergy an actual diagnosised diseased that leads to cancers and a broken down immune system when not adhered to). Not not recommend. The atmosphere wasn't relaxing either. All seemed a bit rushed.

Haven’t been for ages, but thought we would try again. As usual the staff were attentive and the cocktails moreish! The food was lovely, I had a fish dish, which was absolutely delicious. All of us enjoyed the food. The restaurant was busy and we were out in a room slightly off the main restaurant with a couple of other tables, one was a large group, that were incredibly loud, it was very off putting and it spoilt our wonderful meal. The left just as we were finishing our main course, the silence was lovely. It’s maybe not a good idea to put a small group next to a large party. Next time I would certainly ask not to be seated in this area. Prices are reasonable, nice environment too.

I think the starter portions need sorting. Bite sized samosas are for buffets. For what we had , quality was good , but can get the same at a cheaper price elsewhere

Omg, just had the best meal here. My friend and I went for a catch upand I was surprised how busy it was for a Tuesday early evening but after our meals I totally get why it was busy and will definitely be going again. The team there are lovely and the food so delicious. My new favourite place.

NOt up to normal standards but still decent meals despite slow service

Most excellent dining place for any event or just on you own, the food is superb the service second to none prices are really good great choice of authentic Indian cuisine. Catering for vegan and gluten free great choice of beers and wine .very popular so would advise that you book in advance .

Came on Saturday to this restaurant, was a good job I booked online a table because it was very busy. Didn't have to wait more than 5 minutes at the bar. The food was outstanding. The lamb was so tender it just fell apart in my mouth. The sea bass was a great dish too. The only gripe is that the only Indian draught lager is cobra. No choice. Does no one sell lal toofan on draught anymore? Other than that cannot fault the meal whatsoever.

I can't recommend this place enough. The only drawback for me was the access to it for wheelchair users in the toilets because of chairs stacked outside the toilet door

Absolute shambles of a restaurant. Booked a table for 7:30 but shouldn't have bothered. At 5 past 8 we were still stood at the bar waiting to be seated along with everyone else, who had and hadn't booked. A table of 6 was asked to get up and moved whilst eating their starters so they could get a table of 8 in their place. Seemed all they were bothered about was cramming in as many people as possible to maximise profit at the expense of any sort of customer service. We live local and hadn't tried before but wanted to go based on some good reviews. In the end we walked out and went somewhere else but certainly won't be going back.

Amazing curry house best in Wigan.

Booked in for 7:30pm Saturday 2nd March. Greeted by loads of people crammed at the bar. Having found a waiter to tell them I'm booked in, was told to wait 20 minutes. After 40 just left. It's just greedy to overbook your restaurant.

My daughter and I came here on Saturday eve for the first time at 6pm. The place was heaving. Queueing out the door. We sat down straight away, in a side room where a party of 20 was due to came in. They were throwing tables and chairs around to accommodate said party. We had our meal which was very nice tbh but not a lot of it which was thrown at us, was expensive for the amount of food we had. An eyeful of chips and an eyeful of rice. Hardly any chicken in my curry felt very rushed. Kept asking if we’d finished. As soon as we had the waiter came over with the bill. We did t eve. Get chance to look at the bill he was over with the card reader. Spouted out the price to us and shown us the machine, my daughter paid on her phone, he snatched the bill up and rushed off. How rude. Talk about in it fir the money. I couldn’t believe it. No bill to look at. No receipt. No thank you. How was your meal. Thanks for coming. nothing. Won’t be going again. Pure greed in motion. In, out, now pay me !! A horrible experience

Post Christmas meal out with a group of friends here recently. The staff are very welcoming and friendly, atmosphere is great and they the food is excellent, very happy to recommend

I went with my wife to Babar Elephant tonight to celebrate my birthday as Indian cuisine is my favourite. I have been to many Indian restaurants in my time, and I'd say this place is up at the top of my list of best places I've eaten out at. The food was full of flavour, the lamb and chicken was cooked to perfection and so tender. The staff were really friendly and attentive. I'd recommend anyone to give this place a try.

Having dined in many establishments up and down the UK, and abroad, this is quite simply the best Indian restaurant I know. So friendly and helpful, clean and meticulously presented, the food is always to fresh and tasty. Wonderful menu and although marginally more costly than others locally, well worth the extra pennies.

This spot is amazing with really kind waiters. They are really good with children and have a childrens menue. Would recomend to anyone: family or solo.

2023. Back again. Food has got better. Fish dish again but from the menu...stuffed from meal, then undersauce found another fish fillet. Nan breads delicious and light. No wonder every table is full all night. £70+ for two but worth every penny 1_ on the menu fancied the spices of one dish, but didn't come with fish. .... sorry not to be awkward but can I have that dish but instead of pork or lamb I can have fish. Response no problem. 2_ you order beer in a curry house and you can't finish it just in case especially in my case it's so bloody spicy ...just on my limit. Order completed within 3mins on ALL 3 occasions. 3_ service....spot on was asked 3 times by 3 different waiting staff at 3different parts of the meal did we need anything....some might say it would do your head in...I say attention to detail. #wellconditionedstaff 4 service....banter btw lpool (YNWA) and scum staff all light hearted and friendly. 5_ service....upon arrival was assertively told 5mins. I thought ...poor. However he was about to sit a party of 12 and then within 5mins seated us #noproblematall. Feedback ...next time say 'ill be with you in a few mins I have a large party I am about to seat I will then be right with you, please order a drink at the bar while you wait.' 6_ payment. Ready to leave bill paid quickly and left 7_ successful business for the above. But check out the picture for the main reason. #cusoon

Having visited babar elephant a few months ago and really enjoying it, I decided to return, on this occasion with my mum to celebrate her birthday. We do not live in the area but had decided to have a drive out to return. I had made a reservation earlier on in the week and upon arrival we were shown straight to our table. The food arrived quickly and once again was fantastic we could not fault it. Whilst we were half way through our meal, we noticed quite a lengthy queue forming, so much so that it was out of the door at one point. We had almost finished our food when the waiter came and asked if we would like another round of drinks. We ordered a second round of drinks, finished our food and the plates were cleared promptly. We had only been there for aproximately 45 minutes at this point, when the waiter came and asked us if we would like any coffees to which we replied no thankyou. He then proceeded to slam the bill down on the table which we hadn't even asked for and rudely ask "Cash or card?" We both still had a full drink left. I explained to the waiter that actually, we hadn't even asked for the bill and would appreciate being able to finish our drinks first. 10 seconds later, another waiter came and asked us exactly the same thing "cash or card?", at this point we were feeling pretty annoyed. No apology or anything. I could understand if we had been sat there a great length of time but hadn't even been at our table an hour. The restaurant had clearly over booked and could not wait to get our money and get us out! Exceptionally rude, learn how to treat your customers, just pure greed! For this reason would think twice about returning.

what a truly wonderful experience, south Indian chicken garlic and babar murghi with a few side dishes flavoursome and tasty food, restaurant ambience excellent debonair dressed staff, linen tablecloths and napkins giving a classy feel such lovely staff mainly served by Mashuk what a lovely young man friendly rapport and so polite also Rasel who was also attentive and a lovely gentleman both a credit to the business also a few other staff around but didn’t get there names, as an ex restauranteur my wife and I always appreciate quality touches and excellent food, sadly we live a long way from the restaurant but we will combine our visits in the area to include repeat visits, can’t wait for our return .

We were a large party and in general the food and service was very good. The prices were above average but the whole party did feel that they had enjoyed the meal. The final bill was in excess of £220 for the party for Poppadoms, 3 starters and 8 main meals. We also had a couple of drinks each, mainly soft drinks, but also a couple of beers. However, what really annoyed us was the fact that despite us asking for a jug of tap water for the table that request was refused with the comment ' 'We only serve mineral water, either still or sparkling' We did query this, but to no avail. Not wanting to cause a fuss we agreed, but on the bill were 2 large bottles of water at £7.00. We hadn't ordered 2 bottles but they had decided that was what the party would require. What we actually required was a jug of tap water, which is routinely provided (to comply with the licencing laws) at every other restaurant we have ever visited. This turned into our tip as we felt we had been taken advantage of and so we did not leave any extra. The restaurant must be aware that they broke the law as they are long standing restaurateurs. Here is a reminder of the law which they blatantly flouted. 'Do restaurants, cafes, pubs and clubs have to provide free tap water to customers? The only law that forces businesses to provide free tap water applies to licensed premises. Pubs, bars, cafes, restaurants and nightclubs must provide free tap water if they sell alcohol, under the Licensing Act' Hopefully, once they read this review they will amend their illegal practices. Such a shame that this issue coloured our experience.

Came here with friends and was a really good experience. Forget the cost of living nonsense that is supposed to be happening...this place was rammed. Really attentive staff and always on the ball. Everybody enjoyed their meals and I especially enjoyed the Himalayan Gosht, so flavoursome. Pricewise, it is a little on the high side but still affordable and enjoyable.

Visited here on Christmas Day on a pre booking. Excellent food and impressive service. Nothing was too much trouble, Decent value for money given it was Christmas Day, Very tasteful, spacious restaurant with lots of parking available too. Will definitely visit again.

We booked for a family of five on Christmas day. Although extremely busy the staff were professional, friendly and efficient. The portion size was very good and the food tasted amazing. We will definitely return.

An excellent meal, served well, to a large group of us .... but. We always pay for drinks individually to avoid confusion .... but at the end all drinks had been added to our food bill. The staff and management took some persuading that they were wrong .... in the end we told them what the bill should have been! Check your bill carefully when you go .... we didn't feel this was an isolated incident.

This place is so overrated and expensive. The was once tremendous bow it’s terrible, curry was very salty and tasteless. 3 of us went and we all Said the same thing. They use to do proper chunky chips which Wer not frozen now they are...

Food excellent. Service from very friendly helpful staff. Party of 12 including 3 children, we all felt relaxed. The only suggestion I could make is to find an area for people to sit until seated.

basically they have reduced many of the portion sizes by half, however you are paying the old price. Essentially this is the equivalent of putting the prices up 50%. The samosas for example but just over an inch triangle it cost about £6 for this...

We booked a table in the restaurant and arrived in time. When we did, there was a queue of people in front of us, not a problem but... It took 5 minutes for someone to come and seat the group of 4 at the front...

We had a great night for my friends birthday, amazing service, all the staff went out of their way to make the birthday girl feel special! They were all so lovely! Food was excellent! We will definitely be visiting again soon! Thank you!

Food here is so tasty, lots of choice and fantastic service. Good value for money also, no need to look for another Indian restaurant.
