Aughton Chippy in West Lancashire

This was my go to Chippie in my area but feel like food and standards have slipped. Last meal was not that good and Chips were warm ups from lunch. So we have decided to travel to Ormskirk and use the Acropolis little bit more expensive but quality of food is excellent.

Used to be a great chippy this but last few weeks Chips and meals have gone right down the nick had to throw chips taste like warm ups and full of eyes awful swerving it in future now

Always a lovely chippy, never fails..... Pizzas are superb 👌👌. Staff are friendly and happy to help.

Awful food, bones in fish, overcooked chips and undercooked, hard sausages. Would not do back, very disappointing!!!

Absolutely disgusting food . Chips tasted like they had been re-fried a few times, they were rock hard and lukewarm. Curry sauce and gravy was like glue. Fishcakes were totally disgusting, didn’t taste any fish at all and they were freezing. Fish was just about passable!. Will never ever go there again!

Just called in for chips and curry sauce, chips are dry and just ready for the bin! Curry sauce lovely, 2nd batch of rubbish chips. Going elsewhere now.

I’ve always found the food here excellent but now my daughter has been diagnosed coeliac there doesn’t appear to be any gluten free options or at least that’s what I was told on phone. I don’t understand why chips aren’t fried in their own oil to avoid contamination with gluten from fish batter? Surely vegetarians also demand that chips are fried separately from fish? That means our weekly takeaway now has to come from another outlet in Ormskirk that has a choice of gluten free menu items.

Bought from here since it opened and it used to be good, but quality of the chips especially has been getting worse and worse for a good while now, Have all but stopped going recently because of this, but thought we would give it another chance tonight thinking that it would have improved, but no. Chips are probably the worse I have ever had, If you like warm ups, then this place is probably for you, otherwise I would go elsewhere

Not sure if they've changed their cooking oil, but last visit I waited 15 mins for awful chips. Won't be rushing back... up until then this place was 5 stars. (Visit on 13 July 2023)

Not sure how anyone can suggest this is any good. Crap food, deep fried and slopped onto some paper. There are much better chippies around. Aughton isn't that far from the sea! Could be so much better but absolutely no effort from the owners.

Got to say number one chippy to go to. Bit pricey but you pay for that quality always spot on and friendly staff i alway enjoy my food from this chippy I highly recommend this place to anyone

The Aughton Chippy offers an extensive range of English and Chinese food. Portions of their wholesome food are good and great value. The staff are polite and helpful and keep waiting times to a minimum. This is fast food at its best.

Visited Aughton Chippy the weekend, I must say the food was fantastic! No fault with the food at all . The service was Excellent from the lady with dark hair wearing glasses , she was very professional, friendly and extremely helpful! I was not impressed with the lady with blonde hair wearing glasses , very rude behaviour towards myself ! …. Was quickly solved by the lady with dark hair in glasses , who quickly took her to one side , had a word and couldn’t apologise enough ! This would of put myself off returning but the great food and the rudeness resolved will make myself a regular customer.

Big portions of delicious takeaway. Never had a bad meal from here in 10 years. Don't know what all these bad reviews on here are on about. Black bits on the chips? Get a life! What chippys chips don't have them? That potatoes for you! Had to put the meat into the pitta? Ah diddums! My mum is a coeliac so can't have the pitta. It's a good idea to not stuff the meat into it and make the pitta soggy. It's not all about you!! Lamb kebab was dry? The kofte here are exceptional. Most kofte have a drier texture, its a good thing, means less fatty meat has been used. As for the service, the staff have always been good in my experience. They do what they need to do, fast and efficiently. It's not fine dining, I don't know what you expect from chippy staff??

Visited today at around 5.30, I had to repeat my order 3 times to the blonde girl behind the counter as she was more busy looking at someone in the car park. For fish, chips, and a portion of fish bites I was charged £17.52 Upon given my order I asked if that was everything and got replied with a rude ‘ye’ The staff are letting this place down massively, employing rude obnoxious staff I have come to this chippy for years and have always enjoyed it, but the price and the rude staff has massively put me off and I won’t be returning after todays experience. Need to try and look after your customers more than gossiping behind the counter for everyone to hear.

First visit.Battered pork balls quite small with a suspicious taste of 5 spice but still tasty. A convenient (for me) Chippy. Clean, well presented with polite staff. Will use again.

Consistent high quality of food and cleanliness. Does a variety of food including regular english chippy dishes as well as chinese meals, kebabs and pizzas.

Very disappointed this time around. Waiting time was half an hour. Chicken was over cooked and half our order missed off. We also had loads of chips with black bits on it. There was 5 people behind that counter and 3 of them on their phones. 1 talking to his mates. Not a good service.

Not sure why I go back awful - warmed up , bad chips , Chinese food tastes of plastic waste of a good space

Used a few times never a completely satisfactory experience. Food often disappointing. Customer service a bit hit and miss.

Good food but no option for card payment which is far easier and cleaner, why only cash ?

Won't be returning ever again after that, shocking, undercooked greasy chips, tasteless curry sauce with a layer of oil on top, and a 'fishcake' that tasted like cardboard, really gone downhill this place.

Salt and pepper chips where not nice at all shocking could have made better myself not worth the money at all they where shocking chips wether you just get the normal chips or salt and peppermint be going again so hungry now I couldnt eat that for te wont be wasting money there again

I don’t have a problem with the food but the manner of the staff and the hygiene of staff with everyone not wearing masks over the mouth and nose and one person with no mask and I understand if they are exempt but if the shop can’t speak or serve customers after leaving standing waiting for 10 minutes in the shop and then they go to the person behind me and ask what they want without asking me I wasn’t impressed.So am I invisible,then waited another half an hour to receive food.They had shut the website down and when ringing in they put the phone down,dreadful service

Dreadful avoid if possible the service is grim the staff either do not wear masks or they have them hanging from their face, cash only so not a “ contactless transaction “ so do not feel safe or valued as a customer, will NOT be returning

Asked for a kebab one chicken one Lamb They don’t do mint sauce!! Asked can I have it in a tray with chips was told don’t do that either! Only do pitta was told We waited in the car and the server came out with the order when we got home the kebab meat was in a tray with salad and a cold pitta bread not cut open just thrown on the top! Both chicken and lamb kebabs came the same! The chips I ordered was soggy and greasy the lamb meat was dry and the chicken meat was tough would never return again it’s not a kebab it’s just thrown in a tray to make up yourself into a pitta bread which you have to warm and cut open ourselves. Very poor and very expensive for what it was!

Actual service is polite and friendly from the people working the counters and taking orders - thats where the good news stops. The sign which has been put up with good intentions directs customer to wait either to the left (walk ins) or the right (phone orders) of the shop door depending on which type of customer you are. This would work if someone popped outide every now and then calling names or orders out. This doesnt happen often enough, so the queue forming on the having ordered side just grows and grows and is joined by people who need to order (walk ins) who should be on the other side. Prepared orders in the shop just pile up and presumably go a little colder than you woudl expect given the time you have to wait to collect. The people who need to walk in are then shamed by people who have ordered as they are seen as jumping the queue. It doesnt appear that anyone in the shop really cares, since the till keeps ringing, so "its just the way it is". Some people just walk in jumping both queues since they dont have any idea whats going on and ask for help, which further upsets both queues becuase they are not asked to go join a queue by the staff, they are just served. Again something that the shop owners obviously dont care about since the till keeps ringing. As always, if you want the food they sell you will most likely put up witht he poor shambolic service. I wont so theyve lost my business till a normal world resumes. orders are incorrect as well, if you order as a walk in you are asked to wait outside, so unless you fully inspect the order when its brought outside- get it out of the bag unwrap it all and manage to put it all back together you really have no idea whats missing or incorrect until you get home. I suspect you would have been charged for the order you placed rather than the order you get. Not wearing masks while preparing food and only handling cash in COVID times is a recipe for infection.

Unfortunately a quick lunch there was very poor. The steak pie was barely lukewarm. The staff should ensure this does not happen. The chips were level with the worst I've had. Honestly do the owners ever try there own food? Literally among the least palatable I've had from chippies, and I've had some bad ones!

Curry sauce instead of gravy and salt and pepper chicken served with raw onions and peppers, soggy chicken and no chillies or anything, rubbish

Aughton is currently a level 3 COVID area. Moderately busy night. Serving girl wearing a mask around her chin with no attempt to cover her face. No gloves worn. No perspex screen at the serving counter. No hand sanitiser visible. As I was about to enter my order I got a debit card out. "We don't take card - only cash".I thought about pointing out the inadequacies of their COVID policies but elected to just walk out.Let's put aside that their website states that they do take cards (even an Amex symbol there), during this pandemic handling cash then food repeatedly is a great way to spread the virus. Contactless card payment has to be the very minimum hygiene requirement for a take away. Should be shut down.

Food is lovely, however the system is an absolute disaster. Waited 30 minutes in the queue for an already paid for order online was told to join the queue but the orders loads of them were all ready just piled in bags to the side and left to go cold. I wouldn’t mind the food is lovely but the system they re working on is dreadful, they should have one person doing collections handing them out at least rather than people who have already ordered and paid waiting in an unnecessary queue when their order is bagged up waiting. One staff member should be designated to collections only rather than the food left their going cold already bagged up while getting pre-orders waiting in a queue. Absoutely terrible system

ordered a doner kebab and chips, really looking forward to it as i hadn’t had one for a while, The assistant then put salt and vinegar on the chips when i specifaccly asked him not to, so he had to do another tray of chips and then asked if i wanted salt and vinegar on that one??? no i’ve just told you i don’t want salt and vinegar.. I get home and unwrap the kebab to plate up, and all the ingredients i asked for, doner meat, lettuce and tomato, are all in a tray separately with the pita bread perched on top, first time i’ve had a kebab where you have to make it yourself when you get home......

I expect ques due to the current times but when you have placed an order and told it will be ready in 30 minutes you turn up to a large que outside so with others you pass your name to a staff member who just says join a the back of the que people inside the shop placing orders and waiting inside till they are served while my food was in a pile on a hot plate with about 20 other peoples meals when a staff member stops making more meals for the pile and asked me my name again and pulled my food from the bottom of the pile I told them to keep the food as it is now just a soggy mess chips wrapped in paper for twenty minute or more go to mush I won't go back as the staff were very rude and unhelpful

Wish I could give a no star review. Know this - the star was only given so that I could leave a review. Ordered the Salt&Pepper box and it mainly consisted of chicken nuggets, with 2 burnt ribs, some chips and some strangely textured, chewy leathery items in batter that I couldn't identify even after trying to eat them. I only really ate the roughly chopped onion with the odd nibble of the other unmentionables before chucking the lot in the bin. Disgusting.

Had a spicy pizza, looked like a 2year old made it , more chillies than meat , straight in the bin , will not be back

waited for over 30 minutes and when i did get my order it was wrong also food was poor in quality. while i stood waiting for my order i noticed the guy doing burgers and salads used his jeans to dry his hands. wont be using that chippy again .had to give one star to post this comment but to me it would be - one star

Been here a few times never in my life have I come across so many miserable staff fish earlier on is reheated as the batter is soft not crispy I won’t be going again when you have the acropolis down the road which is 10/10 and you get a smile

I put my order in on Friday evening and I do appreciate that fridays are usually really busy. Even so, I asked how long it was going to be and got ignored twice! I waited 30 MINUTES for my food and in that time I could’ve gone home and come back! If they had just said how long I wouldn’t have had to wait for that stupid amount of time, plus add to the people who are in the chippy as social distancing is still meant to be a thing. Again, I know that fridays are really busy but that’s no excuse to be rude.

This place is usually great, but I was disappointed with my last meal. I ordered chow mein which was extremely oily! The leeks in the dish and the noodles were coated in oil which ruined it.

Food has been good but last three times I have used them there has been an item missing. Everyone makes mistakes but when it’s a big pre-order and the food is already bagged you can’t check that everything is there. Phoned to explain and told to come back but sorry that isn’t good enough. My experience where they habitually overcharge their customers for food they don’t receive is a poor effort and whilst I would recommend the food I’ve had enough of the service so will no longer use them. A pity all round.

Been this chippy so many times and always been pretty good but my last meal was horrid. Fish & chips. The fish was so greasy when I removed it from the paper the batter stayed in the paper it was so sloppy and the chips weren’t even cooked properly very anaemic. Wife had a Chinese meal and the meat was full of gristle and not much flavour. Not sure if anything has changed but definitely not the chippy it used to be.

On ordering the girl immediately wrapped the chips which were left to stand whilst the Chinese food was prepared. Lots of what appeared to be untrained staff standing by watching one Chinese chef. Food was churned out quickly, probably pre-cooked. On return home the food was poor quality, the sauces were thick and gloopy and the chips were toally cold and dry, like they'd been left from the night before. Defo won't go again. Shame as someone had actually recommended the place, no excuses though, this food was well below standard.

Hands down the best in the business. They serve the best chips along with the most gorgeous curry sauce and rice, which is hard to come by. An experience I dream about and it makes me wake up with a smile across my face. 100% better than the help I seek medically. X

Terrible!! Chips were like cardboard. Tastleless! The scallops were rock hard! Defo think the potatos used for the chips/scallops need changing! Chicken & sweetcorn soup was like gloop! Wouldn't return.

The best Chippy around. It doesn't matter what you order whether you have the humble fish and chips, pizza (they are very generous with the various toppings) or the wide choice of Chinese meals or their kebabs, they are all delicious.

I dont usually leave reviews, but I think that when something is so good, it needs to be said. Theres a lot of negative reviews everywhere and people are too quick to moan. But this place, I have to leave a great review. The special Chow Mein I just had was the best I've had in the country. (I travel a lot) Fresh ingredients, tasty, and lots of it. Absolute value for money. Cant recommend enough. 5*****

Has to be the worst chip shop I have ever been too had a really horrible Chinese meal very little meat one dryed up shrimp definately not a prawn but just thought a one off then this evening chips and sausage absolutely awful the paper had more flavour than the chips they were disgusting will never go there again would sooner eat cardboard

Best chippy in the area by a distance. Great quality and enormous portions. They're also happy to cook any daft thing you ask for. I suggest a doner meat calzone.

Miserable staff (Not the young staff they're always chirpy) and still no hygiene rating after they were named and shamed in the local press for terrible standards of hygiene. Avoid!

Chinese food very good ,especially hot and sour soup and salt and pepper chicken ,I got some scallops but the potatoes were still hard and not cooked properly

Not very good at all. Ordered 3 meals and must of contained 6 full onions between them. Chips crispy, curry was bright orange and nasty. Would not go back. On the plus side, staff were nice and friendly.

Always great food but sometimes there is quite a wait as it is very popular. Phone orders are a good idea.

We always use this chippy food is always spot on . Hit and miss with the chips and I wouldn't buy the chicken and sweet corn soup again it's like dishwater no flavour what's so ever !

Sweet and sour chicken here is the best around, don't change that recipe anytime soon!

Really cannot fault this chip shop. Always had good food and great portions. The fish are great not to much batter which I like. The Chinese food is always fantastic.
