Having visited this pub on several occasions, I have mixed reviews. The general staff are kind and attentive, unfortunately the owner’s attitude leaves a lot to be desired. On my first visit here, we were told abruptly near to closing time we had to leave, not receiving the usual warning you would expect. As it was such a nice bar, we gave the landlady the benefit of the doubt. On our second visit, as it came closer to midnight, we were given no warning to closing time but were wrapping up our night at the pub. As I was in the toilet, my partner heard “there’s a few in the corner, and they’re Irish”. She was very prompt in getting rid of us. I feel unless you’re of the certain clientele who live on this road you’re not particularly welcome here.

We’ve always liked coming to the Ashburnham as it’s a lovely local pub, but we sadly won’t be coming back after an incredibly disheartening experience tonight. Our small group was having a nice, quiet night with a few drinks — being polite with each order, and never being loud or disruptive. About 10 minutes before closing time, as we were finishing up our drinks, the manager came over to our table and said “you have 10 minutes” and walked away — okay, fine; we were getting ready to head off anyway. One of us got up to use the toilet before leaving and on the way back that same manager was overheard saying “yeah, there’s three left over there in the corner — and they’re Irish.” Just a completely unnecessary comment, made by someone who very clearly hates being around certain customers. It seems as though unless you’re of a particular class/race, you’re not welcome here.

Came for a Sunday roast as a walk-in and staff did their best to accommodate us. At 4.30pm, we had the last chicken roasts that were available. The roast itself was a 7 out of 10, with very tender meat and lovely carrots and parsnips, but very sturdy roast potatoes and not enough gravy. Big bonus: the many board games they have available at the pub!!

Pepina the owner is so great (as is Bandit the dog!) and always welcomes us warmly, as she does our dog Lily who enjoys many a treat while there! The food is good as are the drinks. Our preferred hotel for the o2 and London Stadium is a five minute amble from the Ashburnham. We otherwise visit Greenwich several weekends per year, this is our favourite part of London with our favourite London pub. Always excellent condition ales from Shepherd Neame, superb food (exceptional Sunday Roasts - booking advised, midweek fayre is excellent too), Churchill sofas, open fire in the winter, a selection of board games available, friendly locals, front and rear beer gardens, set in a conservation area in a quiet suburban area. The changes she has introduced have all been for the best. There is always a good atmosphere here, and the staff are helpful and efficient. The menu changes regularly and the choices for meat eaters and vegetarians is very good - and the quality is excellent. This looks like a nice and cozy pub, which I'm sure has nice food and beers. However the one star is for the absolute jerk of a owner/manager of this place, a blonde estern european woman. Didn't allow us to sit down with a newborn inside. At first she was ok with it even though said that there is a curfew of 9pm but said that newborn would be ok, as long as the parents are ok. Then gave her unwelcomed opinion about how it's not nice to bring a newborn anywhere after 9, then flat out said that we cannot have a table inside because she's afraid of people seeing the newborn and complaining that the pub doesn't respect curfew. This is the first time I hear about these rules as if they are being imposed on the pub by the government. NOTHING I READ ON THE GOV.UK WEBSITE SAYS THAT YOU CANNOT HAVE A CHILD IN A PUB AT 10PM IF WITH PARENT (and I did politely share this with her). What it does say that some pubs do impose these rules themselves. Fine! Just say it like that, don't lie to me about loosing licenses. In the end she suggested to sit in the cold garden on rainy weather with a newborn simply cause she thinks she's going to loose her licence cause someone sees the newborn inside the pub. Absolute worst experience ever in any pub thanks to a terribly mannered and terribly spoken person. The industry is called HOSPITALITY. At the very least one would expect a decent thorough honest explanation of why is it that you are neglecting access to the inside of the pub. I can see that i am not the only person (although rare) that is commenting about this womans atrocious rudeness. People like that should just not work hospitality or at the very least not be client facing. it really has been a while since i met someone so ignorant unprofessionla and rude.

Used to come here regularly when I came to London 46 years ago, the last visit being about 10 years ago, merely because of a loss of real interest in pub drinking. Living not too far away and wanting a midday stroll, decided on passing to pop in for their Sunday roast - a choice of beef, chicken, pork or nut. Social distancing well observed, quite a few customers preferring the blistering heat of the jolly back garden area, so inside was very comfortable. Pleasant and friendly service, and a great welcome. Opted for the pork, with a delicious pint of of Master Brew. The pork shoulder was excellent and the strip of crackling with it being the most delicious I've tasted for years. Top marks to the chef on this occasion. Greenwich has a plethora of pubs but the Ash holds its own.

We booked ahead for 7. We were asked the number of families this combined and whether we were eating as well. We were reassured by previous reviews and the questions the owner asked us. The venue is 15 minutes walk away from the Cutty Sark. Which meant there was a pleasant walk there and the walk back was useful as we were all really full afterwards! There is a lovely garden at the front of the pub and a really friendly vibe. We were welcomed through the door and asked to sign in for tracing purposes. Inside a one way system had been effectively set up and there was plenty of hand sanitiser. Inside patrons were seated in accordance with social distance. Outside was even nicer than pictures revealed. As a group of 7 who had prebooked we were seated in a gorgeous walled area surrounded by pots of flowers, tomato, pepper plants and herbs. We ordered a combination of fish and chips and Ashburnham Arms speciality burgers. All plates were cleared with everyone thoroughly enjoying their hot meals. The service was wonderful. The fish was sourced locally and was cooked to perfection. The homemade tartar sauce was awesome. We were not rushed at all and felt as safe as we possibly could be in these strange times. I would thoroughly recommend Ashburnham Arms although I would urge you to book in advance especially if you are going to eat.

We booked a table for 6 people on Valentine's day in the evening. The place was empty when we arrived at 7.30pm apart from a couple who were complaining that their potatoes were too hard. The pub looked really nice and the bartender was very friendly. The first dish to arrive was a burger and chips. The burger was OK but the chips were completely burnt and we were very surprised that they had been allowed to leave the kitchen like that (see photo). The next dish to arrive was roast beef which was OK except for the Yorkshire pudding which was raw and uncooked in the middle. The rest of us ordered battered cod & chips which came with the same burnt chips. The fish was cold and uncooked in the middle and we asked for it to be replaced. Although the replacement chips looked OK, they were crunchy and undercooked in the middle. The replacement fish was STILL uncooked in the middle. To the bartender's credit, he did look quite embarrassed about what had been served, apologised and said that we wouldn't be charged for any of the food. I'm not sure what had gone wrong as the rest of the reviews for this pub were uniformly good. Although we weren't charged for the food, it kind of spoiled our whole evening out.

Tucked away in a quiet residential Greenwich street is a real hidden gem if you're looking for great value in a traditional pub setting. Whether it's a quality Sunday roast (the beef was perfect, my mum's slow roast pork looked even better), delicious fish and chips (try the coley - my wife says it's amazing) or the vegetarian options of meat-free Mondays we've never been disappointed. The food can take a little while to arrive if the pub is particularly busy but is well worth the wait. Dishes are mostly around £12 for a substantial main course - I've never had room for the desserts!Well worth the ten minute walk from the Cutty Sark or Royal Park and so much better than the over-priced restaurants crowding the town centre.
