Ascough's Bistro in Harborough

Been before a few years ago, this time for lunch , three courses £29 plus for supplements. Food was top quality , up with the very best restaurants in Leicestershire . Service also very good, in fact excellent all round and we’ll certainly be visiting again . The restaurant was virtually full so best to book,

Great foodie place - all our meals were delicious. The staff were so knowledgable and efficient. We had great food and drinks . Love their bread . I enjoyed the Jake with cauliflower cheese . My family loved the duck and the apple crumble soufflé was fab.

This was our first time at the restaurant and we had an outstanding experience. We were looked after by Chris (who we later learned is the owner) and he kindly moved our table to a place that was quiet. The service was very good; lots of waiting staff who were well dressed, polite and well informed about the menu and wine list (sadly a rarity these days). A lovely ambience in the restaurant made it a perfect dining experience. Now, onto the food, we both had the lamb which was cooked to perfection, we highly recommend the scallops or the smoked haddock as starters. I hesitate to say too much as it’s just going to make it harder to get in!

I picked the restaurant after looking through reviews as I would have a few hours in Market Harborough. I was not disappointed. I had not booked but this was not a problem. The welcome was very friendly and a suitable table found. Atmosphere was excellent: quiet background music and all tables were immaculate. Picked the 2-course menu: soup and Haddock risotto. Both superb and the portions were just right for me. Service exemplary. I was not going to have a dessert but could not resist the Sticky Ginger Cake! It was out-of-this world; beautiful light sponge with wonderful sauce and ice cream. Prices are very reasonable for this quality and service. Highly recommended.

Wonderful food but lacking on the service side. We love coming here because the food is all home cooked and the menu differs monthly so you can to try lots of lovely dishes. The food and the plates are never hot which is a shame but when we have asked in the past they just tell us that is how it is. The staff seem to do the minimum, no smiling and are never to be found when you have a query or issue which really lets them down.

Attentive staff and service. The food was superbly cooked and presented. An explosion of flavour. Decoration was understated and chic, and pricing was very reasonable. Look forward to our return.

Definitely good for its 4.5 star rating. The three course set dinner was excellent and good value at £37.50 plus drinks. Reservation advised.

Arrived for our 8pm booking and shown quickly to our table. This place had been recommended to us and we weren’t disappointed. We ate off the 3 course menu and each had a flight of wine We didn’t have starters we had the nibble bits as a starter. All of them stunning I had fillet steak and my partner had the lamb Both excellent and beautifully cooked Desserts were cheese board and the espresso martini Again faultless So we both had an extra glass of wine and a coffee and the bill was still just under £150 For this standard of food and service you’d expect it to be more The service was excellent on all counts btw. Very much a team effort

As per the scores the service was excellent and so was the food quality. However. I think the restaurant is trying to be too clever with its food combinations. Maybe aping master chef etc. My hake was somewhat spoiled by the addition of squid ink aioli and the cheesecake by the addition of some weird tasting basil sorbet.

Did my research for somewhere to eat when we visited on our narrowboat. We weren’t disappointed . The set menu was really reasonable with lots of choice we had the wine flight to accompany our food. Three courses, bread , veg three glasses of wine each was £113. Bargain! Wish we lived nearer.

This was our first visit to Ascoughs and I booked dinner for 4 for my partners birthday treat. I've heard really good things and was so looking forward to trying this restaurant for myself. The food was delicious, served hot, well seasoned and beautifully presented. We did wait quite a while for the starters to come out which was a shame but were served some bread with oils and some amazing flavoured butters whilst waiting. The restaurant is decorated beautifully, really modern with some lovely colours and we kept noticing the quirky items around the room. Service was a little slow. Our waiter was really lovely and knowledgeable but we did struggle a couple of times to catch the eye of the other waiters. We needed a new fork at one point and we also wanted to order another round of drinks as our glasses were empty. We did really enjoy the evening and would come back again.

Was recommended this restaurant by a lady who owns Falconry experience days just outside Market Harborough . We had a lovely evening, superb food , vegetarian option (soufflé) was delicious and my husband said his steak was cooked to perfection! A special mention to Mimi, excellent waitress with 100% professionalism and friendliness couldn’t fault the rest of the staff either. Look forward o visiting again when in Market Harborough.

We booked this restaurant four weeks in advance due to availability. Given the length of time from booking to visiting the excitement had disappeared, how this changed on arrival. A Saturday evening with friends changed as walking through Ascoughs doors. The restaurant is fanominal, the layout as been carefully considered. The quality of the furnishings are more than adequate. On sitting down the staff were extremely helpful, considerate and accommodating. This continued throughout the evening. The menu has good range, to cater to all. I can personally admit, the Steak was perfectly cooked, the quality of the cut was superb. Whoever there chefs are should be commended. I am reasonably well travelled, I would go as far to say that the Steak was the best I have ever eaten! Given the quailty of the food, this is not an experience restaurant. The surroundings atmosphere were enjoyable, the atmosphere the same. If you are looking for something special or to impress someone, look no further, you will not be disappointed. My wife can be a fussy eater, in 25 years I could count on one hand how many times she had cleared her plate. The evening could not have been more delightful. My sincere thanks to all the staff, they were all professional. Ascoughs has to be the best restaurant in Market Harborough. I have given Ascoughs 5 stars on all categories, anything less would be disrespectful and unjustified.

Visiting Ascough's was a delightful experience. The food was top notch, portion sizes are just right and the lunchtime menu was great value. The starters were delicious and the lambs liver in our mains was like cutting into butter, perfectly cooked. 😙👌 The place feels spacious yet cosy, has a lovely relaxing atmosphere and the timing of the courses is spot on - the staff pay you just the right amount of attention. Have already booked to go back again with a different friend as she saw the photos of my lunch on Facebook and wanted to go! Highly recommended.

We managed to get a reservation at short notice. It’s been a few years since we dined at Ascough’s, it was wonderful back then and I wondered if they had maintained the same level of excellence. We were not disappointed, the food was incredible. Top quality ingredients, beautiful flavours and brilliant attention to detail. The staff were lovely, efficient and fabulous at their job. To have this exceptional restaurant on our doorstep is a treat. Well done to everyone there!

We had been to Ascoughs many times but It had been a while since we visited having moved further away from Market Harborough. We were nearby and were able to book a late table for lunch. It was as good, if not better, than we remembered. The room and service were still of high standard but it is the food that excels here. The set lunch, 2 courses for £22, is remarkable value for money and was of high quality. The Charred watermelon starter was exceptional as was the Black Pudding Crusted Venison Sausage, both very creative and beautifully presented. The same standard with the main courses, Pan Fried Cod Fillet and also Monkfish Medallion with squid. Wonderful flavours, textures and presentation. This really is a great place for quality lunch and dinner and is excuse enough for us to visit Harborough more often.

Came out with my family for my 24th birthday dinner and had such a lovely time. Attentive service, wonderful food and a surprise birthday plate with a square of cake on at the end too. I had the venison for my main which was cooked perfectly. I loved the dauphinois too. Brilliant wine and cocktails. Quick food times seeing as it was a Saturday evening and was full! Bread at the start was so lovely and home made. So so nice to have a place like this locally and on our doorstep. Hope it stays for many many more years.

The food was excellent, but the service was a bit slow from ordering drinks until the food arriving, the rest was excellent.

Great food, cooked perfectly, the chicken was lovely and moist. Unfortunately, let down again by the service of the waitress with the short blonde hair. Upon our last few visits, she has been very rude and abrupt and seemingly unwilling to smile. I have seen several reviews online of a similar nature, so assumed this would be a known issue within the company, but unfortunately her attitude has not changed. If you don’t like serving customers, perhaps it’s not the right profession for you my dear. I don’t think we’ll be back for a while.

Unfortunately we were very disappointed with the experience at Ascoughs . Table booking for 12.30 at 1.30 still not had our meals . A server came and said the chef apologised and was just plating the food now we waiting another 10 or so minutes. Food not very warm , tart soggy to name a couple of things. Not the standard of our other visits . One of the servers a blonde bobbed hair girl very unapologetic and bordering rude. Customer service is very important .

Another visit, another exceptional meal. Absolutely wonderful lunch yesterday. Service, atmosphere and very importantly, as always the food was out of this world. Whoever makes the desserts needs a medal, outstanding on all accounts. Huge thanks and congratulations on being so good!

There was lots of hype about this place ,it's the first time I've spent 3 hours in a restaurant,a very busy place and that was reflected in the poor service ,the food was very good but I don't think I'll be going again ...

A table of six. Intros, bread, Starters, mains and deserts. Food was served promptly, spectacular presentation, elegant and interesting flavours but, serving staff seemed to want to take plates away too early, and cramped seating made serving plates tight and awkward, dim lights meant a neighbour table had to use their phone light to read a menu, continuing to cause glare and distraction. Waiting staff were otherwise very good, knowledgeable and friendly. Two chicken mains had small pieces of wooden skewers in the food and a hair in one, we were promised some free deserts which were never taken off, but a gratuity was added by the restaurant. In the end we just wanted to get out, so paid the £300 bill and left. Food is special, just a shame we had a few bad things happen in succession.

Having eaten here many times with no issue we were very disappointed after a recent visit. My wife has a severe fish allergy, which as usual the staff were made aware of at time of booking, on arrival and at time of ordering. We were going to celebrate her birthday. Unfortunately after 5 mins of our starter my wife began to have a severe reaction. We informed staff and my wife had to take medication. During this our main arrived. Staff provided ice and cold water and offered to call ambulance, which at that stage was not required. The table manager said there was nothing in the kitchen that could have caused it and definitely no cross contamination. However the anaphylactic reaction my wife had is an immediate response to an allergen and could not have come from anything else, we hadn’t eaten anywhere else and last food several hours previously at home. Staff seemed insistent that it was not their problem. My wife’s symptoms lessened and we continued to our main, which by now was lukewarm, staff informed but no offer to resolve. I finished my main and my wife left to get out into fresh air as she was beginning to feel unwell again. I went to pay and no one asked how we were or showed any concern. A very polite French bartender gave me the bill, the table manager made no effort to check things and we left. We did not email the bistro initially as we didn’t want to spoil any further our experience, but after chatting to friends and family who eat there we were encouraged to send an email for response. The email was sent 2 weeks ago and again more recently, unfortunately we have had no confirmation of receipt or other response. This was our special favourite place to go for special occasions, not only can we not go again in fear of a reoccurrence but further insulted with the lack of any response, in whatever form, from anyone senior at Ascough’s. The food and experience, up to that day, is exceptional. However if you have a severe allergy / anaphylaxis BE CAREFUL!!

The first time we visited this restaurant (about 6 years ago), it was fantastic. Fast forward to two weeks ago and our minds have been changed significantly. There was a very quiet but awkward atmosphere, where the waiting staff seemed quite nervous. The food was beautifully presented but my scallops starter became very unpleasant towards the end, due to a very unwelcome mouthful of sand! The waiter took it back to the kitchen but didn't return to me with an explanation or an apology. Once we had paid the bill, I mentioned the problem with the scallops to a waitress, who just told me it was beyond their control. Probably won't return, as we were left rather underwhelmed by the whole experience.

2nd time at the restaurant. Was much better than a Michelin we had been to the week before. We will come again

My wife and I attended the Valentine evening event on the 14th , our table was booked for 8pm and we arrived about 10 mins early and were shown to our table immediately. First impressions was that it was a nice environment but considering it was a special evening and was costed appropriately there was not one item or feature in the restaurant to indicate that it was Valentines night. No roses or hearts or chocolates or special drinks to give that added touch! Our drinks order was taken quickly , we then studied the menu and within a few minutes our drinks arrived. Then we sat and waited and waited for someone to take our meal order, at 8:15 we called one of the waiters over and asked when someone would be with us to take the order. We were informed that he would ask his colleague to attend to us. At 8:20 we called over another waiter who again said that he would get his colleague to take our order and that the orders were taken in order of seating, we disputed this as others arriving after us appeared to be attended to before us, however shortly after he did appear. The meal once it arrived was very good, 6 courses and was served by friendly and informative staff. Overall not a bad evening but lacked any Valentines atmosphere for which we had paid a considerable amount.

We were recommended Ascoughs as the place in Market Harborough to get a really good steak … we were not disappointed it was perfect. The scallop starter was also a winner for us both! Once more we decided to have our anniversary lunch at Ascough's and it was certainly the right decision. We were made very welcome on arrival and quickly shown to our selected table. The food was not only delicious, but the presentation was wonderful. (Congratulations and thank you to the kitchen staff) .. The service was great and every member of the team worked well together, to make a great dining experience.. A special thank you to Mimi, for her service and knowledge of the menu. Ascough's is a truly Hidden Gem in Market Harborough and provides quality food, immaculately presented, at a very reasonable price. Once again, thank you to all the staff.

Wonderful meal on several occasions. The food is so consistently great here. I think the cost of the food is so incredibly reasonable for the excellent quality that always arrives on my plate. Beautifully cooked. Staff excellent. Great wine recommendations I recommend the 'wine flight'. Thank you. Continues to be consistently great several years on.

Excellent lunch today with 4 friends, the menu had a good choice, we were a little confused as there were so many foods listed with one choice, once we knew it was all part of the same course, we understood. We couldn’t fault the meal or the atmosphere, the standard of food was excellent, we will definitely be going again

Had a marvelous time with the girls excellent food beautifully cooked and presented.

Took my sister here for a meal as had been before and everything was really good, food great, service great and dessert was lovely. However this time the starters not very good only a one star, the main was not hot enough when brought to the table, it should be piping, the plate was not warmed either. We had to wait for the veg to arrive, should have come with the main, but in fairness the veg was really tasty, the dessert also lovely. Maybe they changed chef or short staffed who knows but we both said that in the price bracket I could think of many better places to go. Disappointed and also the apple crumble which was a winner was not on the menu anymore, it’s good to change a menu but I think if something is popular as I heard it was, then keep the winners and change the rest. Overall it’s only two stars on this occasion. Shame as they have a good reputation.

I had high hopes after hearing good things! In truth it was bang average and felt like a place that has forgotten the basics and perhaps thinks it’s better than it is. Without a long drawn out review , I will go straight for the negatives; Poor service , offered one drink and not checked in on, Food- terrible Burrata, a silly string like piece of cheese to supplement what should have been a creamy ball of mozzarella delight, over cooked monk fish , criminal really for such a quality ingredient :( dirty menus, terrible art work and school tables . To top it off, the food was lightening fast , no time to breath. A rushed event but in reflection I was glad to leave . Nothing would make me go back here , bottom draw

Incredible fine dining tasting menu at a surprisingly affordable price, not much more than a good pub meal! Service was excellent, including a Somelier explaining the wine flight as each glass was brought. Wonderful experience for a date night. Highly highly recommend!

This was our first visit to Ascough’s, but we will definitely visit again. The food was delicious and well presented and the staff were friendly and efficient. It is clearly very popular at lunchtimes - our waiter told us they are fully booked until they close over Christmas!

A tasty lunch with a modern ambiance.

Six of us went on a Friday evening. Yes the food has gone up, because of food and energy inflation, but it is still excellent value. We all had three courses and couldn't fault any of them. The house wines b the glass were also good and fairly priced. Service excellent. If you've not been for a while, go again, it's even better than previously from our experience anyway!!

The food here is all well paired and rich in flavour. The drinks menu is comprehensive and the cocktails well prepared. In combination with an excellent service this makes for an exquisite night.

Cannot fault the food or service, lack of photos due to just enjoying our meal. The cod was amazing & as for dessert, the garnish of liquorice sorbet was out of this world. I don't like liquorice or sorbet, but this was amazing. The extra birthday treat from Ascoughs was delicious. Will certainly be back! Fantastic place

Lovely food but rather noisy atmosphere when busy

5 Stars!! Sorry, no photos, but trust me, the mains were to die for!! Each course was delightfully presented, and equally lovely to eat as it was to look at. But the Venison was definitely the star of the night, beautifully pink. We came on a Thursday night, amazing atmosphere, i am not surprised how busy it was. My friend and I had a very nice bottle of red to go with our mains (a lovely bottle too) recommended by our waiter, as there was no rush to move on, we were able to dine and drink in comfort. The staff were extra attentive and came back to check on us several times. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending anyone to try this lovely place....Thank you to the staff, will definitely coming back.

The overall experience was positive. However, although we booked a table 2 weeks in advance over the phone, when we arrived they couldn't find the reservation and we were made to wait about 10mins until a table got set for us. The staff tried their best, but it felt there were long gaps of waiting between starters, main meals and deserts Luckily 4 of us had a lot to talk about and waiting wasn't too bad. Apart from that, the food and drinks quality, presentation and taste were great and scrumptious!

We have just arrived back home having just been on our 1st visit to Ashcough,s. This restaurant was recommended to us and we will definitely be going back.

Really interesting menu and well executed. Top place for foodies.

This place basically used my friend for 4 hours and never messaged to say how they did or to say if they got the job. Not even an apology to say they couldn't accept them. Disappointed will never come here because of this situation. The food took forever and came out cold.

Amazing meal and very good value for money. The service was prompt and friendly with good menu suggestions made the staff ensuring that drinks were always available and more than worth the service charge. The quality of the food was superb with all 3 courses being an excellent, my steak was cooked perfectly with so much flavour and the Tiramisu ice cream being a nice way to finish the meal.

From start to finish you can’t fault this place and at the three course set meal price will surprise you and the delicious cocktail’s bright up the mood!

Reading the reviews, I had high expectations of Ascough’s. Me and my partner went for my partners birthday meal and came out feeling very disappointed. The food was average but expensive. We ordered dessert and waited 40 minutes until we asked where it was, to be told that the waiter hadn’t put it through. With it being soufflé I had ordered, we were told it would be another 15 minutes. They did ask if we wanted another dessert on the house but I was set on the soufflé and 55 minutes for a dessert just isn’t worth it, so we left. Pleasant atmosphere but let down by inattentive staff sadly

Very poor. Food average but expensive. Service poor,had to ask for menus,drinks,bill, pretty much everything. Staff didnt like our table and made that really clear! Not friendly at all!

Very disappointed on our second visit. I had the courgette parmigiana and it came with the tiniest portion of bland pesto spaghetti. I ordered chips when I saw the portion size and was given ‘a look’ by the waitress. For £28 (two courses) this wasn’t filling at all. Even with the very little veg and potatoes we had to share between 6 people. Not once did we get asked if our food was ok. My friends aubergine steak was rock solid and too salty. Expected more for what we paid and service wasn’t good at all. Very disappointed

We had a wonderful lunchtime meal, with excellent service and mouth watering food It was a great way of celebrating my wife's birthday. Thank you all for a fantastic experience.

Went for lunch time meal and what a meal it was. Absolutely delicious!! Had to be sneaky and check the Internet to see what some of the items on the menu were. I'm not that cultured hahahaha. We had 2 course meal with some extras, so expect 40 a head. Totally worth it.

Having just moved to the area this place has been constantly recommended and we were not disappointed. It's the best by far. We could have been dining on a cruise. It's not our usual type of dining but I was amazed how delicious and plentiful all the food is. We are both vegetarian but loads to choose from and enjoy. We will be back time and time again. Staff excellent. All of them. So good. Thank you. Worth moving to Harborough for 🙂

Just had the three course lunch (with wine and a few extras) as a wedding anniversary treat. Excellent service, food, atmosphere and decor. The food presentation was first class and proportions generous. We are noted, among our family and friends for being 'big eaters' but we couldn't have managed any more.

Sadly, not a great experience this time. We've been many times in the past & both the food/service has been outstanding. Not this time. We had a long wait before being served & when the meals arrived, they lacked the wow factor for us. We won't be returning. There are other eateries in Market Harborough, which we need to explore. Disappointed.

Have lived in the area now for 5 years and finally made it to Ascoughs! Well I wish I’d not bothered! 25 mins before anyone came near me then when ordering we were informed that it would be a minimum of 30 mins wait for the food. Dated, huge menu, tired decor, lots of busy idiots not really knowing what they’re supposed to do. Anyway don’t go here! Langton Arms, The Lighthouse, even Pizza Express has a better atmosphere, more attentive staff and a better menu.

We enjoyed their Tasting menu. Very good indeed both the good and wines.

Lamb was very rare plate almost cold , chips very dry ( not nice ) my mushroom sauce was like water ( not sure if it had any mushrooms in it ) . Had a chat with the manager ( I think it was his position) he wasn't bothered so won't be going back sorry .

The place needs modernising and decor sparkling up a bit but the food is always excellent! Atmosphere is a bit staid and tired.

Beautifully cooked and presented by professional staff, a visual and culinary treat. Lunch will cost you £20pp for two courses or £27 for three with a £7 or £10 supplement on selected items. There is an extensive wine list. This lunch menu was inventive with unusual combinations obviously out together by people who know their stuff. Gets full quickly so book in advance, If you enjoy your food get yourselves down there. I'm booked in again for this time in March and will definitely go again after that; my 4th visit.

The meal was simply brilliant, imaginative, the chef is at the top of his game, service faultless friendly helpful and informative, this is the very best in fine dining without being pretentious or silly expensive, do yourself a favour and try it for yourself.

Best restaurant in leicestershire by far..food is always stunning

It’s so nice to have a very high quality, independent, reasonably price eatery in Market Harborough, chain restaurants can never live up to the quality of somewhere independent and run with passion for food. Ascoughs has a lovely clean and modern interior, great menu selection and relaxed ambience. The staff were really friendly and helpful, and the set menu is great value for money. The food I had was lovely - high quality, well balanced and beautifully presented. I would definitely recommend and will be back!

I would not recommend this place to vegans. I ordered a vegan soup and it had bacon in it which I didn't realise until I had tried it. Please go elsewhere

The meal was delicious - all the flavours worked well together and prices were reasonable.

Going to Ascough's is always a special experience. The food is second to none. Everything is prepared and presented beautifully. The staff are great. Good value too considering the quality of the meal and ingredients, and all that must go into preparing it. Always a treat - highly recommended.
