After having several ‘tasting menu’ experiences at various local restaurants this was by far the worst! Bright lights, no atmosphere, filthy carpet, no table linen, paper napkins, chipped crockery, dirty glasses, bland food, no-one bothered to explain courses or ask if they were enjoyed, limited wine choice and, to top it all, we were charged for something we didn’t have! Would not recommend at all, try The lighthouse at Boylestone for a proper tasting menu experience!

We’ve been to Arthur’s quite a few times however this weekends visit wasn’t to the standard we’d enjoyed previously. The quality of food was excellent however, the courses came out so quickly that we hardly had time to enjoy them, which was disappointing as in my opinion it ruins the experience of a 10 course tasting menu. We almost felt like an inconvenience at the end of the night as they were closing down, weren’t even offered the extra optional course. This is constructive criticism, as I’ve said the food was excellent, hopefully the experience will be better next month as we had already booked in to return for the final menu.

We booked our table at Arthur’s months in advance and we’re really looking forward to it. Upon sitting, we were told we only had 1.5 hours to eat until our table was needed back. We were quite shocked as we had booked the full tasting menu, so not sure why we were being time limited. The time constraint meant that we were being brought 3 courses at a time which, frankly the table didn’t have room for, and also it meant food went cold while we ate our way through it all. There was no break at all between courses, not even time for a loo break, and it just got a bit silly really. Once we got to pudding, the staff came over and said actually we could now have a break as they had decided to lay another table on so we didn’t need to rush anymore. The service ruined the experience for us, and you have to compare it to other fine dining restaurants given the price being charged, but it’s not up to the same level. We didn’t even get a warm welcome when we first arrived and we were exactly in time. The food itself was tasty, but again it didn’t impress like other fine dining restaurants do. Maybe we came on an off day in the busy festive period, but we were disappointed and likely won’t return.

After following Arthurs online for a while I was excited to finally try the tasting menu, however this just didn't live up to expectations. Whilst the food was nice, it wasn't anything amazing and given the price of the 10 course menu I'd say you can get a lot better for your money else where. There was some smoked fudge at the end that quite frankly tasted like eating a cigarette butt. Also the service was just not up to par for a fine dining experience, smoke and the smell of fish filled the restaurant from the moment we entered, serving staff were leaning over the table every time they put the food down, additional cutlery was placed on the table and we were expected to share this around rather than placing it for every one and overall it was just very slow with very little interaction from anyone and no explanation of the dishes. A final mention for the toilet (only 1 in the building), this was disgusting! The room was dirty and dingy and the floor was soaking wet.

Booked Arthur’s as a treat for my partners birthday. Unfortunately it was the worst experience that I’ve had in a very very long time. The restaurant itself is uninviting. It’s trying to be a fine dining restaurant with a fine dining price point yet the sole toilet leaves a lot to be desired and the food was served with serviettes as opposed to napkins. If I’m honest, the BYOB should have been a red flag but the menu sounded nice and the price set my expectations fairly high. Our first course was described as a pulled pork jacket potato but what we got was half of a cold new potato with flavourless pork covered in chives. The bread was nice however it was served with rock hard butter that was completely unspreadable alongside some onions that were also covered with chives. The velouté tasted quite nice although it was split and whilst my cauliflower ‘fondant’ was soft, my partners was solid. The arancini, also covered in chives, was okay but far too big a portion for a tasting menu - I’m not one to complain about a big portion either but it was just a lot of mushroom. I left the cod and ox cheek as not only did it look like dog meat, it tasted like it. The cod was so salty, it was inedible. The remaining courses were just as bad. We couldn’t wait to leave the restaurant as there was a LOT of smoke billowing from the open kitchen which was making ours, and other diners eyes water. My best advice. Avoid. Keep your money for somewhere else… There are a lot better restaurants at this price point locally

We booked well in advance for this popular restaurant and ate on a Friday night. As we’d not been before we were slightly apprehensive after reading some of the reviews on here, but we had a lovely experience. We’d come prepared with our own wine, and some chilled water was put on our table for us. We had the 5 course menu and found it really interesting and different. I had the cod and ox cheek bourguignon main and loved how the flavours went together. The chocolate tart recipe has been improved since the chef read comments on here and was delicious, not dry at all. The staff were lovely, attentive and knowledgeable about the food. We didn’t feel rushed and were able to pause before dessert. All in all a great night. I know Arthur’s is moving in the new year to the old Fox and hounds pub at Coxbench so it will be interesting to revisit then.

Initially struggled to gain entry as the door was stuck. This may have been due to the excessive moisture that completely coated the large windows. Our greeting was prompt and we were shown to our table. The first two courses arriving almost simultaneously, I would have expected to finish one before the next was brought. The mains were pretty decent but the chocolate fondant tart was quite dry with a very small scoop of ice cream. The next 'course' was a small piece of smoked fudge about 2cm big, followed by a course of coffee. The toilet is very much in need of refurbishment, ill-fitting and mis-matched taps is not what I would expect in this sort of venue.

I was really looking forward to dining here after reading great reviews but, although a nice evening was had, we left feeling slightly disappointed. The staff were friendly and nothing was any trouble. They were attentive and prompt with our meal. We had the 5 course tasting menu £45 and took our own wine as it is a BYOB restaurant. The venison was an outstanding dish! Really wonderful meat and cooked and seasoned beautifully. Bread (which is classed as a course) and the soup were nice but not very memorable. The apple tart tartan was served stone cold. The pastry was hard as nails and would of benefited from being warmed up a bit. The smokey fudge was not at all smokey. None of the menus flavours of any of the dishes were punchy. The restaurant was uncomfortably hot and had left over decorations and pin nails still in the walls near their rather unimpressive bookcase. All looked a bit tired and in need of a bit of a re-paint. I really hate writing this as I feel I sound a right snob but the place really needs some nice linen. There I said it! For a £45 tasting menu I would expect a proper linen napkin and the tea towel that the servers delivered our plates to us was tatty and I've seen cleaner ones.... The toilets had no hand towels and the toilet in the pub we went to beforehand was more pleasant than here. This is a lovely place with very nice staff but with nothing "special" about it's visit. I really, really wanted to love it with it being local and using local produce but our evening was just OK.

The restaurant is lovely and small. The toilet is not what you'd expect from this kind of restaurant with only one toilet (no disabled) and it is not nice at all with mis matched taps and bars at the window. We were there for the food, which varied from amazing on one course through to basic on others, such as a cheesy croquette on one course didn't have the flavour you'd expect from this kind of restaurant. It didn't help a lot of the courses came luke warm, one with cold pasta on which I think hugely impacted the taste. It's a shame as it's a tiny restaurant so I don't know how it sat for long enough or whether it's pre prepared and they didn't heat it through entirely. It is good you can bring your own drinks, we were never offered a drinks menu so we weren't sure if they sold soft drinks on top so maybe bring these too if you are going as there was no sign anywhere of people having any drinks given. Overall I potentially would try again as it is good value if it was hot food with consistent flavouring incase it was one bad night but if it's the same again I wouldn't recommend.

Service was disappointing… we had the 5 course meal and it all felt very rushed. Attended for my husbands 30th birthday and was expected to leave after 1 hour and 15 minutes. We were asked if we wanted a break before the dessert and I said yes please, but within minutes, dessert was on the table. It’s a shame as we have been wanting to go for a long time and saved it for a special occasion and overall I’d call it quite underwhelming.

I visited Arthur’s recently with my partner and we tried the 10 course taster menu, we left feeling a little underwhelmed especially considering the cost of the meal. We didn’t enjoy the food as much as we anticipated. The wild garlic velouté was tasty but the rarebit was hard & difficult to eat, I’m not a fan of really hard crusty bread. I didn’t enjoy the monkfish dish, I didn’t feel the flavours worked, the monkfish was stone cold and not pleasant to eat, the mango sauce & curry sauce which was quite bitter didn’t work. The fish “sausage” was interesting. The steak was tender and I enjoyed the potato but the sauce was very unpleasant, it tasted like very bitter marmite, I couldn’t eat it. The ice lolly was delicious, but the rhubarb tart was underwhelming and the jam tarts & jellies seemed pointless. The pork burger was tasty enough but forgettable. We didn’t feel the meal was worth the money, sorry.

We often do taster menus and were excited for this one which was nice but not wow. Some down points Basic IKEA cutlery which I hate One of my plates was chipped No one asked us if we wanted the cheese course The toilet is very small and a tight squeeze to get in and out. The bin is also very small for disposing of paper towels. The atmosphere could be improved Would also appreciate the cork being returned from our wine as we didn't finish it all and took it home. The food was well presented, and the prescatarion option was good. For me the pickled egg was too pickled and overpowering, the peach Melba tart was slightly under baked on the pastry and it was a shame the final trio of sweets were not the same as the menu. Highlights for me were the smoked fudge and onion compot.

Following our experience, I have written directly to the restaurant and had no response, which is another minus. What follows is an edited version of that contact. Following our visit yesterday evening I want to pass on some of our observations which I hope you will take on board constructively. We received a warm and pleasant greeting on arrival. The main front of house was helpful throughout and we would say that she was making every effort to please. Our enquiries about timings and serving pauses were answered efficiently and several requests during the meal responded to similarly, once attention had been gained, which wasn't always easy as both servers were prone to being pass / kitchen facing, chatting, rather than looking at the restaurant. On the table a candle was lit and producing black smoke, at least in part because the wick had not been trimmed. Perhaps, also because mit is a Wilko citronella candle and not intended for indoor use? Unfortunately, we had poured wine in to a glass before realising that there was lipstick residue on mine. Obviously, one would never expect a dirty glass to reach table! I asked about your glass cleaning procedure and was told that it included a post wash steam and polish - evidently this had not happened. Service proceeded satisfactorily, the duck roll was lovely, swiftly followed by the sourdough etc. and the veloute. We were left wondering why all had come together, but presumed that it was to allow the soup to cool down? Or is there some other reason? After a pause, we had the Caesar Salad wherein the lettuce base was fresh and crispy. We would suggest that croutons be more in evidence and a good deal less anchovy - it was oversalty and unpleasant. The fish course..... had a piece of something blue on the underside. The explanation offered was that this was a piece of j- cloth on which the fish had been resting. However,..... I would suggest this may have been a fragment of catering elastoplast, or.... blue catering / serving glove... Psomething else with a more plastic than paper or cloth content. Other than it being my wife's birthday and not wishing to cause embarrassment, at this point we would have left. Having persevered, we enjoyed the meat course and the dessert marrow tart was a treat. The lemon curd was not what we recognise as a curd, seeming overly rigid - too much cornflour, gelatin? -and the balm leaves also contained stalks. Extra hot water for coffee should not be delivered in a cup - it is not suitable as a pouring vessel. The toilet space was found to be clean and tidy EXCEPTthat the sink needs a good 'shine up' clean and if at all possible an extra touch of general niceness adding to the little room. We would also suggest that you aim to deliver a more leisurely feel/experience. We felt there was somewhat of an air of hurry in the room, that dishes were put on the table more than placed for example; the chef hurrying out at 9:10, no interaction with diners, did not give a good impression. In summary : a lack of attention to details marred what we expected to be an at least near fine dining experience and means that we had far less than good value on this occasion. As already said, I hope that you and your team may find the above constuctive. I addition to the above: one of the sauces was delivered in a cracked and chipped dish, we had to ask for a wine cooler ( rather than being asked). Various elements of the menu were more akin to a finger buffet or hors doeuvre selection than meal ( even allowing for the usually smaller parts to a tasting menu). Overall, just too much that was really not good enough and at £140 for two ( no drinks), very poor value.

Maybe it was because it was a Wednesday night, but the food we had was not similar to those in the photos on Tripadvisor. The first two courses (bead and soup) were great, but the bread was bought in and the soup was prepared well ahead. The main courses were really underwhelming, the beef was overcooked, as was the monkfish, the potato undercooked, and it was all quite bland. The dessert though was awful. A rhubarb and custard tart was presented on its own, a very small slice with raw pastry and very odd custard. This was a five course menu for £45, The 5th course was coffee and a piece of fudge. This didn’t feel like good value for money, and we were left feeling really disappointed

Firstly, when we arrived we were told we were booked in the next day and kind of left us hanging, however with proof on an email response we had saved from the restaurant they accommodated us. Onto the food and we chose the 5 courses, which was plenty for us. The dishes were all really tasty👌 and offered something different than the usual choice on offer from other restaurants. I was a little disappointed with the rhubarb and custard tart as that's all that was served on the plate and it had no 'crunch' and maybe could have benefited from a little something extra or a crisp pastry. Something for the restaurant to take note of; there could be a bit more attention to detail to make the dining experience that little bit better..... Double check your booking to ensure the correct date. Change the water in the vases on the tables, most looked brown and the flowers were drooped on our table. Maybe when setting out the replacement cutlery, place it down properly rather than in a heap at the end of the table. Provide a couple more milk pots with the tea/coffee to save people asking for more, there was only one small eggcup full for 4 diners. Offer tap water without us having people having to ask first. These are only minor points but noticeable to the customer so it would be even better if these points could be addressed for next time we visit. So overall, yes, we would visit again and look forward to it being even better next time 🙂.

I really love this concept- the menu was exactly what brought us here via social media and the lady who does my eyebrows. We really enjoyed our food, I had the fish and my team mate, beef. I love the courses but we settled for the 5 course as we had to consider fuel ontop etc in these times, sadly. I would love to return for the 10 course in the future. The items seemed locally sourced and were so yum, great to see. Because we were the first customers there wasn't much of a vibe and it was super quiet but as more people came it grew more comfortable and was really buzzy by the time we left. Good to see this considering the cost of living crisis. I think pre ordering does take away from the service and there weren't really any further explanation of some things but I'm also shy to ask. We did arrive a little early and it was a bit awkward but maybe you weren't ready for us too. We weren't told about any soft drinks available until well into the meal, so we settled for water as we had a fairly long drive home but would have liked a diet coke to begin with. It was our choice to trek to Arthur's, and I am glad we did. The Cullen Skink with the haddock scotch egg was the best thing I've eaten this year. Wish them all the luck for the future :)

Everything about our visit to Arthur’s exceeded expectation but the food was the real star. We had the 5 course tasting menu with a couple of extra dishes from the 10 course. The flavours and presentation were superb. The food was very seasonal, the bread homemade and flavour combinations great. It was a set menu with just a choice of meat or fish for the main course but who needs choice when the food is as good as this. It was £35 and we have often paid as much or more for 3 courses of very mediocre food at other places. So great value for money. The service was very relaxed and the meal perfectly paced. It is bring your own which means a great night out, fabulous food at a very affordable price. This could so easily have been £100/head with wine at somewhere more pretentious. I like the concept of this restaurant, and the food is generally very nice. I did think the dishes needed more fresh salad/vegetables. The sour dough bread was too hard though, and shouldn't really be classed as one course, as it came with a very nice soup. My monk fish dish was over salted sadly, which spoilt it, and the curry sauce & small hard nan bread combo on the same plate didn't work for me. I ate everything however, and I hope this restaurant does well and offers more for fish & vegetarian diets in the future.

We came here on a Saturday evening for the taster menu, as the restaurant sounded interesting. The first thing to say was that the food was really yummy, it was 10 courses and each one was obviously very well thought out and perfectly cooked. There were some ingredients that I hadn't tried before and some that brought a lot of discussion. We both thought the food was top notch. The only problem was that there was very little of it. I know the idea was to be able to try a little bit of lots of different flavours without overdoing it, but I was expecting to be full by the end of 10 courses (and after paying £45), which I really wasn't. The first course consisted of a single cherry, cut in half with a touch of pate in the centre. Tasty, but...really? This counts as a course? Luckily most of the others were slightly more generous, but still left me wanting more. I think if everything was double the portion size then I would have given this place 5 stars. The bring-your-own-drinks was welcome, and a good way to keep the overall cost down. So, overall, very nice food, well cooked and well thought out, but maybe have a quick snack before you go.
