Delivery was amazingly quick and food was fantastic definitely my née favourite chippy

21/08/24: exceptional lightly battered well- done haddock, chips & Irish curry! 14/08/23: disappointing lunch today. Ordered on UberEats. No peas available to order. Had pudding chips & gravy. Looked like a half portion of chips and everything was just warm. 01/06/23: Sausage, chips, peas & gravy! Delicious, good sized portion!

They can get busy but that's because the food is so good 👍

I drive about 8 miles round trip to Armstrongs & find the Fish & Chip meal Great apart from my last visit. Obvious the chips had been standing a while. Cold & Dry. Fortunately the fish was nice fresh & hot. Hoping this was a one off.

This place has really deteriorated over past few years, fish are no longer 'Jumbo' chips are a very poor quality. Not at all impressed... Used to be good, not at the moment...

Placed a order at counter for 6 meals got home 2 portions of chips missing which I was charged for tried ringing them for several minutes.no answer id advise people to check what you get when you order

Gone down hill recently got chips and curry sauce normally get Irish curry but was told they haven't got any so opted for English curry. Big mistake no taste was watered down had to throw away tasted like boiling water on chips disgusting.

Ordered cod burger and chips and a chicken mayo burger and chips came with drinks but no chips at all, what a joke

Order via Uber eats. Partners cod is so undercooked/borderline still raw in the middle! It’s like mushy fish in a pale soggy batter. He’d already eaten some of it before he realised it was so undercooked! We’ve ordered from here a number of times and never had any issues, think this will be the last time we bother.

Came a month or so ago for the first time in a while, but the chips weren’t nice. Soft and under-seasoned. But every chippy has an off day so I tried again tonight. Same again, sorry. Your chips just aren’t nice like they used to be. There needs to be some sort of quality control in place because I think you’ve got complacent. I won’t be going here again

Sacked my fiancée today with no notice after she has put up with nasty attitudes from management, majority of staff very clicky and talk behind peoples back. Only a few staff were nice genuine people. No support given proper training from management. Quality of the food has gone majorly down hill aswell compared to the high standard it was for 20 years. Daughters of the owners have inherited it and you would think this would give them some grace and decency but clearly they don't know how to treat people properly and should be ashamed.

Ordered food for delivery. Paid for priority. One meal was missing and cod was missing from other two meals. Paid £22 for two small chips and two Pepsi’s. They don’t answer their phone either. Absolutely livid

I was here a few weeks back and order 2x portions of chips that were dried up and tasteless. Gave them the benefit of the doubt and returned today. My mistake: I ordered a2x portions of chips and curry sauce and to ny dismay were inedible. They went in the bin after taking a couple bites. The oil is either tainted or old, and are using cheap quality potatoes. I would have been very sick had I eaten them. Will never ever be returning here! What happened to the Armstrongs 20 years ago!!

Just had an order delivered via Uber, order is missing a full meal and then a side order. Just debating which child I decide isn’t eating tonight. Tried to contact multiple times but they do NOT answer the phone, I’m not near enough to just nip in hence paying for delivery. Wouldn’t recommend.

This is the best chippy by far, the jumbo cod is fantastic and the chips are great as well, can feed a family of 4 on chippy Friday night, I have to come all the way from Moston to get the jumbo cod as my mum loves it and she says the same thing gorgeous jumbo cod well worth the money, I would recommend anyone and everyone in going here to get your chippy special xx

Staff are totally useless, and have bad attitudes, walked in ready to order, 4 of them just stand there talking to each other, asked if i could be served, and ne of them said ther not ready to take orders yet, this was around 5pm, I just walked straight back out, was really looking forward to have a fish and chips, the way that place is run , is a disgrace.

No fish ready, told 2 mins for fish, no one else in shop; then ten mins later no fish done yet still waiting while others coming in getting their orders quicker; quality gone downhill; last time not too bad but today 23rd Dec. all batter not much fish; really expensive too; will have to try somewhere else next time..

Great fish and chips, my only criticism is the mushy peas are fairly bland and don't taste of peas. If they improved their mushy peas, this would be my favourite chippy.

I've been a big fan of Armstrongs for 30 years, but the last couple of meals I've had from there have been really disappointing. The main problem has been that everything, the fish in particular, has been swimming in grease. When I got the fish and chips home and opened the paper, a pool of grease just ran all over the work top. Apart from having to clear it all up, the fish was way too greasy to enjoy. This has happened twice now. The first time I thought it was a one-off, but I'll be going elsewhere from now on. Sorry Armstrongs, you've lost a good customer.

The worst fish and chips ever and all very cold . The chips were all bad chips and the fish so dry and just burnt tasting . I’ve attached images of the chips I received.

Just been and only got a portion of chips for in the car, there wasn't one proper chip in the bag, they were all slithers of potato and dry and chewy. Had to put them in the bin, after scratching my throat on the. Gone d I wn Hill from when we first started going.

Fish was very dry. I had haddock which was worse piece of haddock i have had and my wife had cod also very dry Batter very greasy Chips were good as were curry sauce and mushy peas but the fish was inedible

Firstly, I've been using Armstrongs for thirty-odd years and found the service and food to be very good. I arrived at armstrongs at 12.40 on 1st November and ordered a fish as soon as I arrived. Left my daughter to pay and collect, as there wasn't a big queue, and I went to pump my tyres up. 15 mins later when I returned my daughter had paid but still no fish & chips. My daughter said that my fish had gone to someone else. Waited a further 10 mins, in which time they'd fulfilled an online order for 7 fish & chips, which came in 10 mins after I placed my order I then had to intervene when they started serving someone else behind me and told them I'd been waiting 25 mins for fish & chips; They finally switched the fish to me and didn't have the decency to apologise for extended wait. What has happened to teh Armstrongs of old??

So it's been a while since I had lunch from Armstrongs and I must say the quality has really dropped off. The fish although freshly cooked it was over battered an greasy. The chips were funny shaped dry and nothing like traditional Armstrongs chips . Also I was very surprised that they don't accept cash payments . I recognise card is popular but some peeps still want to pay with cash especially youth who don't have cards

Absolute terrible fish was tiny and for £6 each milkshake machine never working not a patch on what it used to be and chips were awful

Not been to Armstrongs for several years since moving house but after a visit to Heaton Park called today for take away for five people. It was awful. Chips were not fresh and very scrappy, scampi was all batter, pie mediocre etc etc.and all just about warm. An absolute waste of money and the server was not very happy either. Have tried to call them but guess what the ‘phone just rang out several times. Used to be great but now ………… what a shame. Save your money or go elsewhere like the White Fish at Unsworth.

Really disappointed with service.I think server name was carol.she was very rude to me I don’t know for what reason.when my fish n chips was ready they didn’t ask for any salt vinegar on chips.wen they packed it there was no fork no napkin.service and attitude of server was zero.chips was very hard seems like refried.never ever will go there again.

Got a large chips, fish, 6 goujons and Chinese curry, cost us £13. . Really disappointed with portions. We asked for a large chips ( £4 ) and got a slim white tray which was seemed suitable for one, we even went back to check if it was a large and they said yes. Previously we would get a large chips in the paper and they are enough for three of us, today we were really disappointed, particularly due to the cost. Armstrongs, you need to be consistent with your portions, not sure what’s going on but today was ridiculous so we won’t be visiting as regular as we had

Been using Armstrongs since the 80s but now it’s very poor. The chips are unpleasant, full of eyes, texture like cardboard, some still had the skin on last time we went. Portion sizes are smaller, one large portion would feed the whole family now we need more than one portion. Pies are over cooked with the pastry inedible. You have to pay with a card, no cash accepted. Fewer staff and they seem to be different each time. Not a good experience overall.

We haven't bought anything from here for a VERY long time as it wasn't that great the last time we ordered so i'm not sure after reading other reviews if we were really lucky this time as we ordered Fish chips and peas and it was absolutely gorgeous I can't fault it.

Update 19/08/23 Armstrongs has gone!! £6 small fish Food no longer wrapped chips served in a SMALL thin bag aka fast food. Staff behaviour shocking - all with a negative vibe. Fridge is filthy A shocking fall from grace!! Oh… and they don’t bag the food anymore either, needs to be requested at an additional cost of course. Updated review Feb 2022: Big change in the staff, lost the welcome feel across the board - nobody appears happy to be at work anymore. Quality has dropped to that of a regular chippy. Finally it's become eye watering expensive - now just shy of £8 for standard fish and chips without sides or drinks. Tell tale sign is you never see 999 crews here anymore obtaining food! Previous 5 star review: Possibly one of the best chippy's around, very clean inside and out. Very reasonble prices for the portion sizes and the staff always appear happy.

Very rude staff and they make everything in one oil. So if you are vegitarian this aint a good option for you. Never coming back. If you suffer from anxiety do not come this place. An asian old man was also ordering food and I could tell the staff was making him feel extreme uncomfortable. Shocking behaviour. The quality of their fish and chips gone downhill. Have always been a promoter of Armstrongs but went today after a while and the portions have shrunk. The regular cod is probably only 2 thirds the size of what it use to be if not half the size. The only thing that hasn't got smaller are the prices. Home of the Not so Jumbo cod

poor quality. Fish had obviously been reheated. Mushy peas were a solid mush. Not a pea in sight.

Dont take cash? Really? So the kids can't buy a bag of chips with their pocket money? What do i do when I've lost my wallet and my wife gets a heap of cash for me to use until the new cards arrive? What about the homeless guy who cant have a bank account because he doesn't have an address? I guess you dont care about them? Well, as long as there are places that do still take cash, I'll care to take my business to them instead.

Food is nice but my lord the staff are miserable. Walked in. No one greeted me. It’s quite unnerving if you suffer from anxiety. Maybe the manager should do some sort of training. I felt quite uncomfortable. Was too anxious to ask for ketchup

Don’t bother going in. Rude, miserable staff. Makes for an uncomfortable environment. Won’t be going back. Would rather drive 10 minutes up the road which is a shame as I live a 2 minute walk away.

By far the most miserable staff I have ever met. Ordered fish and chips, chips were that greasy I couldn’t eat them. I wouldn’t have bothered putting this review up though if the staff hadn’t been so unapproachable. 3 of them stood with their heads balanced in their hands. Not one of them greeted me or smiled. Customer service goes a long way. Management, sort your staff out!!!

Absolute joke cashless and poor quality food

What has happened to Armstrongs, this used to be one of the best Manchester Chip Shops. Sadly I went in the other day for just chips and gravy and a buttered muffin. I was really looking forward to it. However the chips were awful, hard and full of eyes in the chips. I'm sorry but I do not want eyes in my chips, it is gross. I picked all the ones out that had them and it was about one third of the portion. I threw them away. The remaining chips I ate some but honestly I did not enjoy them at all and gave up and threw them away. The buttered muffin seemed a bit stale too. The portion sizes have gone down from what they used to be. I have used this chippy for many years and before have not been disappointed. It's now card payments only as well. I think I paid about £3.30. I think you seriously need to up your game to bring this back to your previous high standards.

Was second in the queue when suddenly about four uber drivers came in for orders and cleared out all the chips, so my wait was twenty minutes not five. Pointless exercise going in there when you're about to get served only to be, pushed back by online ordering. Very disappointing performance from what has always been a great chip shop.

At last found a takeaway that accepts card, last few I went to were cash only. Had a chip barm, was a good portion of chips on it.. Price was very responsible as well..

One of the best fish and chip shops around, and the jumbo cod was excellent, lovely big white flakes of fish 5 star.

I have just paid £14.77 for fish and chips and a drink . The portion size (fish ) was absolutely dreadful . The small amount of fish I did get was severely over cooked it was very clearly frozen not fresh as it once was . What has happened ? It’s very sad to see the standards that were once so high have fell so far . The chips were ok but had sadly been covered in Irish curry sauce and not the Chinese curry sauce I had ordered .

I use to work here 15 years ago. Omg how awful has this become. The women on the end with her plastic union hat near the fridge took my order miserably... chips. Peas. Gravy. Sausage. Pie. Paid over £8 on my card. As I waited I saw another staff pure jelly gravy into someones tray of chips i thought oh no.. what the is that.???? So than union women starts handing me my items ... never even asked in the beginning or the end do I need a BAG ! so I juggled the items to my car because I wasn't paying 30p on my card for a bag. Only I had no PEAS. So check cctv mark awful experience chips were rotten aswell.

I went here a month ago I was not impressed with the amount of food you get now the boxes are not big enough to put a decent amount for the money you pay and the chips have changed not tasty anymore not impressed won't be going back again.

Ordered large chips and usually you get more then enough to feed 4 but yesterday portion was not a large. Apart from that everything else was good.

Overpriced for portion size, paid £1.95 for a can of coke that wasn't even GB, it was some foreign coke. Disappointed.

Fantastic fish and chips. Almost always have a great meal from here. Some of the staff can be a bit short with you; I ordered an extra curry sauce after receiving the order and the person serving me pulled a face. I also got a bit of attitude when asking for a bag - they didn't offer one initially and then told me off as there is usually a charge (which I would have been happy to pay had they asked).

I wouldn’t recommend this plaice, not fresh food, and they don’t accept cash so won’t be using again on this basis.

Absolutely appalled to see that Armstrongs Chippy has gone cashless ! I have been a regular here since it first opened, but no more ! I hope the decision to go cashless is the start of it's demise, along with any other business that refuses...

I won't be coming here now it is cashless. This surprises me given that businesses are losing out with card transactions. Cash is king.

Awful fish and chips, chips looked and tasted like they had been warmed up a number of times. The cod was awful looked grey and not white I've had better frozen fish. The peas were cold and the curry sauce had no taste to it.... Stay away if you want a decent fish and chips!

Bought the fish and chips today and I definitely got an unhappy vibe from the server. Firstly, she gave me my fish chips and curry without putting them in a carrier bag(I would have paid if needed be for the bag). Reached home and saw the chips were proper hard (see picture) It looks and tasted like they were refried. I’ve been buying fish and chips from Armstrong for years and have never had food this bad before. I’ve had family come from abroad and have bought fish and chips from here for them to taste. Never had this bad before. Looks like their quality have gone down.

Loved this place. So ordered again only this time the chips were reheated over brown chewy chips. Usually, or used to be fresh hot chips. Not this order. Dissapointed this time. Has it changed hands?!

Got fish chips fish was over done for price very small compared to white fish whitefeild. Chips some were ok but some were so chewy over all not impressed with food better of going white fish

Great food, especially for kids. They also have some great milkshakes to choose from too. The staff are always friendly and even offered to help when another customer was struggling to read from the menu, very lovely! Highly reccomend if you are craving something simple, filling and tasty!

I got a packet of chips they were just about warm, to many bad bits on the chips very disappointing. The fact they are not excepting cash anymore I will not be visiting again.

The server put chips into tray and then stood for nearly 10 minutes with them In her hand waiting to put fresh chips on top. Had to ask for them to be thrown away. Fish overcooked and been in warmer for a while. peas dry....

Excellent food, staff so busy they confuse orders, waited for 20mins and mine was in the warmer, I'd still be there if I'd not questioned it's whereabouts........ disappointing!

Really disappointed with Armstrong's chippy. Haven't been in here since they have gone completely cash free and now only accept cards. Not very considerate or accommodating for a business to refuse cash! Where is freedom of choice?? I imagine the bank charges they incur now will be extortionate!

Been going to this chippy for years nice fish fresh large chips but i will not be going back poor fish chips are poor burnt. The standards have droped food poor prices high.

Walked out of here last night after queuing for ten minutes to get to the head of the queue, only to be told I’d have to wait while they got 2 deliveroo orders out !! Surely customers on sight should take preference over telephone orders or am I wrong ??
