Armenian Taverna in Manchester

A friend and I who’ve been to the old place many times in the past, and the new ground floor restaurant is lovely. The food and service were as good as ever, and I feel a bit mean only giving 4 stars for atmosphere, but that’s just because it was early lunch. The meat mixed starter platter for two was really good - a real mix of interesting flavours, and surprisingly filling! The mains were exactly what we keep going back for, and the price per person would’ve been about the £30 mark, but I got a nice bottle of wine between us. Marvellous.

I have been there twice and, unfortunately, both times food wasn’t very tasty.

I love this place. One of my favourites in town! The service is amazing, food is wonderful and we always have a fantastic time. They always accommodate having a baby with us!

The restaurant is beautiful inside the food is fantastic and very very tasty the staff and our waiter Eric was brilliant it he had such a good way about him, can't wait to revisit... all in all first class can't recommend it highly enough

We had a project Christmas meal here and it was absolutely amazing. Food was yummy and big portions. We had the party menu and the choice of dishes was great, something for everyone and we had many dietary preferences within our group that were all catered for. Such a friendly place. Everyone loved it and had great things to say, even those who were sceptical before hand.

The food was unbelievably scrumptious. I was surprised to realise that this place is actually one of the best restaurants I have tried around the city centre. The prices don't break the bank either, it's all very affordable. The decorations don't exactly suit my taste but the space itself feels quite fancy, neat and bright. I will definitely be coming back here soon, thank you to the restaurant for the lovely treat :)

It’s one of our favorite places! Food is delicious, atmosphere is great and serves is top, especially thank you to Sofia, you made your evening! But, one of the waiter was rude and we experienced not a pleasant situation, when manager was shouting at staff. According to reviews it happened before. This lesson should be learned

Very welcoming and delicious food, I really enjoyed the atmosphere.

First time being here and the food was absolutely amazing, fresh and so tasty. Had the king prawn starter, mixed grill and honey cake which I’d definitely recommend. The staff were also really friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was really relaxed and chilled, not too loud! We will be back!

Two years ago, we were here down in the basement. It was really good, and I rated it 5, but not today. The place is now newly renovated in an Italian style, which does not match with the Armenia style at all. Food quality and services are also disappointing. The staff is rude and impolite. The foods are too salty and badly presented. The wines are overpriced and not much to choose from, only areni nori is available.

I was most disappointed, the food was nice but cold. Not a problem I can fix that however my bread basket was missing, the best part of a mezze time meal!

We had a Christmas dinner party there, but unfortunately our festive mood was dampened. The food wasn't bad and the ambience was pretty cool, but what a terrible and rude restaurant manager… There were about 15 of us, but unfortunately some of our colleagues could not get to the restaurant because transportation was cancelled due to the aftermath of the storm. We paid the deposit in advance and when it was time to pay the bill the manager refused to take into account the fact that people struggled to get there and charged in full. We had a long conversation trying to convince him to adjust the bill however he was very stubborn and unyielding. it looked not only like ordinary greed but also absolutely unprofessional and not hospitable at all! He talked to us aggressively and rudely shouting across the restaurant. One of the ladies was upset when he raised his voice to her personally, however he refused to even apologise! We were astonished by the low standards of customer service. We will not return to this restaurant and discourage others from going.

Tasty, good portions. That's probably all that's good. Cons: 1. When booking they say one thing, when checking out they say something completely different. Keep in mind that Armenian hospitality does not always imply accurate calculation when issuing your check and the owner of the establishment shouts (no, perhaps it is more accurate to say - YELLS) at the guests. 2. Very fussy service, our order was clarified more than five times. 3. Very expensive, especially alcohol. My colleague paid £11.25 for a glass of wine and it was one of the NOT expensive wines. We were all shocked when we saw the check. By the way, the menu had a different price. 4. 12.5% ​​of your order amount is immediately added to your receipt. That's a lot for bad service. Will I come back here again? I doubt. Manchester has many good restaurants. Will our company hold a banquet here again? No.

Food was tasty but "rustic" in presentation. Festive menu on at £39.95 for 2 courses! When we booked the website had an a la carte menu, which was not available when we turned up. Drinks VERY expensive...Peroni £7.50. We felt rushed, the waiter actually asked if he could bring the main course when we were still eating starters. Owner looked miserable. 12.5% added for service charge. NOT going back.

This restaurant felt like a warm hug from home. The khachapuri, pickles, shashlik, khinkali, herring, and honey cake were all absolutely delicious. The staff was incredibly attentive and friendly, and the chef even showed us the brand of pickled mushrooms they served. A perfect blend of flavors and hospitality — highly recommend!

We ate here and shared an Armenian banquet with items such as hummus, babaganoush, salad, and meat platter. Restaurant was lovely and service was excellent. Would recommend.

Dan and I are visiting from the States and were desperate for a sit down meal around 10pm when every other kitchen was closed. The Armenian Taverna answered our prayers and exceeded every expectation. The female manager made us feel like home, our food was exceptional and came out quickly, and the cocktails were fabulous. I will recommend this to anyone traveling to Manchester! 10 stars in my book

Went there for a pre-concert meal early on a Friday evening. The food was excellent and the staff were very friendly.

I LOVE the new location! It's literally next door but it's surprisingly brighter and the decoration is fantastic. The food was good as always and the service was attentive and very involved in making our experience the best possible (thank you for letting us try the wine to decide what bottle to go to!). It was always an option to recommend and eat every time we go in town, but now I think it is even better!

It was a team dinner with my boss. Service was very slow. Probably because they were short staffed or something. Took over 25 mins to take our orders. I enjoyed the starters and dessert. The main dish was grilled meat and plain rice which was dry to eat as there was no accompanying sauce or anything. The place is beautiful but I definitely won't be coming back.

5/5, 10/10, 99 out of 100! I really enjoyed my first visit to this restaurant during the week. A menu full of unique, delicious looking food options and the wine list was similar. My selection was the beef ribs with aubergine and mashed potato and it was cooked beautifully with a heap of flavour. Will absolutely be back next time I'm in Manchester and I recommend people give this place a go

A gem in the middle of Manchester. We've been going there for the past 5 years and never had a bad experience. Food is authentic, fresh, and delicious. People who work there are warm and friendly. Cannot recommend this place enough!

We visited this restaurant yesterday to celebrate our anniversary. The ambience is stunning—elegant decor and a lovely atmosphere that immediately sets a celebratory tone. The service was good. However, the food was a bit of a letdown. Having tried Armenian cuisine elsewhere multipletimes, we felt the dishes here didn't quite measure up in terms of flavour. Also, i ordered the meat medium well but received it extremely well-done, which made it a bit dry. However, the portion sizes were generous, so that was a plus. Overall, it was a pleasant experience thanks to the atmosphere and service, though we hope the food quality can improve to match the beautiful setting.

After a long day, we were expecting some good food and service. Unfortunately the branch manager was very rude, angry and impatient. He took our plates without even asking. Other members of staff were good but the manager was not even treating us like humans. Extremely disappointed in the service by that one person. I will never recommend or go to this restaurant again.

The food and atmosphere was great, serving staff was also nice. With all that said, the manager was particularly rude and unnecessarily hostile. The manager ruined an otherwise good experience with his rude and disrespectful behaviour towards customers.

2024.11.09 evening Service: The manager (assumably, a man with short grey hair in suit) was rude and honestly a bit intimidating, not just to us but also to the staff (literally shouting at some of them). Not only was that hard to watch for the customers, it is disrespectful to the staff and affects the working atmosphere, which is not acceptable. The rest of the staff were nice though, especially that lady, despite the pressure and the rush hour. But it seems they are a bit short-staffed, so the service was rather slow. Food: The food was generally nice, reasonably priced for a restaurant located where it is. I personally really like the solyanka, it was surprisingly flavourful and just so satifying. The salted herring with layered vegetable starter was nice, but I seemed to prefer having the layers separately, probably because I don’t like how the mayo goes with the rest of it. As for the beef and aubergine dish, the beef was very tender but overall it wasn’t very flavourful or impressive. But I’m not Armenian so I was learning to appreciate them, and hoping they do their national cuisine a justice, as it’s my first time having Armenian food. Atmosphere: The interior is nice, bright and clean, maybe a little too bright. The washroom was beautiful. It was a tad noisy that I strained a bit to hear my friends but generally not too bad. It’s mostly the manager’s attitude and presence affecting the atmosphere I’m afraid.

Mediocre overpriced food. Waiters disorganised and inattentive. Waited an hour for mains which were bang average. Definite tourist trap due to central location. Would not recommend.

Fabulous dining experience. Thankful to the very helpful waitress Sofia who helped us navigate the plethora of choices on the menu. All dishes were delicious and generous and we will certainly return.

Been here many time and the new upstairs has been transformed very very professionally and deserves more than 5 stars thanks again for amazing dinner ,service and atmosphere. Thanks to the chefs who prepare dishes with so much passion and not forgetting the fantastic selection of wines and Ukrainian beers . See you again soon

Cozy friendly place with a lot of options. Food is delicious with lots of flavour. Staff is extremely friendly. Waiting time is a bit too long.

Overpriced food, not very tasty. Georgian khachapuri and walnut eggplant are sold as Yerevan khachapuri, breathless people! Adjarian Khachapuri is Georgian, not Armenian!!

When we entered the restaurant, no one greeted us. We stood there trying to get the staff’s attention for at least 7 minutes, catching their eyes multiple times with multiple members (two barmen, two waiters, someone who looked like a manager). We were completely, intentionally ignored! Even if you’re busy, you must attend to people who walk in, even if just to let them know you’re fully booked, and not let them awkwardly stand there. There were two men in the queue in front of us who were also being clearly ignored and they, too, were getting frustrated with the wait. We ended up leaving because if they treat you like that before you sit down, what’s gonna happen once you’re in their grasp! As someone from that side of Europe, I’m appalled at how this place is run. Utter disrespect and blatant disregard for guests. We’re never coming back.

I had lunch here which was my second visit. The first time was a little underwhelming but this second visit has totally changed my view. The food was gorgeous (I had the stuffed cabbage and my friend the rib eye) and I couldn’t fault it. The service was also great as everybody we interacted with was warm, welcoming, and smiley. Couldn’t recommend enough :)

The customer service is terrible. The bill is £82.80 and we asked the split to 3. The waitress charged me £30 instead of £27.6. Avoid this restaurant for sure

This was a mid-week late lunch and our first time here (it won't be our last). The lunch menu is a great place to start if, like us, you are not familiar. There is a decent choice of food and is a great indication of what the a là carte menu is like (next time). The best part, though, is the wine list. This is fabulous! Red, white, rosè, orange and pomegranate! We had several different wines and as they serve so many by the glass, it is a great way to try wines that you wouldn't normally get the chance to taste. (Not cheap but worth it). We also had dessert and mountain tea, but if you have the Armenian coffee (yum), ask for a tiny spoon to stir. There is a service charge of 12.5%, which is a bit steep, but it's worth it and we will be back.

The only thing withholding me from five stars, is the service charge of 12.5% on the bill. I don't mind to leave a tip for good service, but my principle is that tipping is the guests decision, not that of the restaurant.

I've walked passed this place many many times over the years, the odd glance down the stairs to the entrance,.but on this occasion walking pass its had a make over with new dinning area/space and was tempted in. The results fabulous food great staff. The goulash amazing

The service and atmosphere were good but was completely let down by the food. For starters, we ordered the mix grill meat. The meat was lukewarm and tough. We notified the staff and asked them to make sure the mains were hot. However, the mains were also lukewarm which was very disappointed. We had to ask for the dish to be heated up. This was surprising because it wasn't a particularly busy night. The beef goulash lacked flavour and was dominated by the saltiness flavour and the other meat dish we ordered was slightly dry and tough.

Just a really nice night. Really nice looking traditional restaurant. Food was delicious and plentiful. Loved the katchupuri, dolmas and dumplings. Was too full for pudding but will try the honey cake next time. Was a real taste sensation for me as my palate is used to italian food mainly. The lady serving us was great too. Very professional but warm also.

Service was absolutely terrible. Slow as hell.. I almost passed out. They didn’t serve water nor gave me a coffee menu which I requested. Owner is straight up arrogant and doesn’t realize that waiting for 2 hours to get fed by their sub-par kebabs is not the norm.

Went here for my wife's birthday meal, what a perfect place to celebrate. Everything about our meal was superb, the choice the food the staff and the atmosphere.

The service here is out of this world! They really make sure that your taken care of! Every member of staff were on high alert and it’s clear to see why this place is rated so high! Even with a full house they make sure that all of your needs are met! We ordered some pints to the table and the manager instantly made sure they were topped up properly! Clear to see they have high standards. The newly renovated venue is beautiful and the atmosphere was elegant and electric! It’s clear to see they went all out on decor. The huge chandelier in the centre of the restaurant is mesmerising! We went for my mums birthday and the food they served was some of the tastiest and most interesting dishes we’ve tried. A completely unique menu with clear care and focus on quality! I would say the food here is worth the price and we spent £250 between 4 of us even though we had dips, starters, mains and dessert with 3 rounds of drinks. I recommend coming here for a birthday of any sort of celebration! They will take care of you and ensure you leave smiling!

Everything we got was delicious, especially the mixed kebab, hands down the best barbecue I’ve had in the UK!

We have been dining in and around Manchester for almost 40 years and as my wife used to work at The Central Library this was always on our radar. We recently noticed the extensive remodelling of the restaurant which looks very impressive and said we should visit which we did today. We booked via the First Table app which gives you a significant discount on your bill. The restaurant is wonderful, a testing for any restaurant is it's toilets which were spotless and beautifully designed. The food was simply awesome, I've never had Armenian food before but I will be doing again. A faultless meal for the four of of us accompanied by superb service. Highly recommended.

The khinkali and service was exceptional. Only thing to ass is the chairs are very narrow for people with wider hips and it would be nice to set up the tables outside to signal to costumers your open for business. Which creates overall a atmosphere as soon as you sit down.

Amazing food, lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. We will always visit this restaurant when in Manchester. We have visited Armenian Taverna twice on our 2 days stay in Manchester. Both times food was amazing. It worth every penny we spent there.

The Armenian Tavern has for some time been one of my favourite restaurants in Manchester. I have enjoyed all of my meals there, and the food and service has always been excellent. As well as dishes from the caucasus, it is also one of the only in places in Manchester to get Slavic dishes like Borscht and Soladka pod shoubi. It is and remains to this day a great restaurant. However, I wanted to post to say how gutted I was that the restaurant has now opened a large dinning room upstairs and closed the basement (except for private parties). The old dining space was intimate, cosy and comfortably. Descending the stairs from the hustle and bustle of Albert Square into the Armenian Tavern was one of the great dining experiences in Manchester for me. By contrast the new upstairs is white and glass with high ceilings and looks like every other restaurant in Manchester. Clearly the restaurant is doing well which is absolutely something to be celebrated and the new look will appeal to the majority. It will remain a firm favourite of mine, but it would be remiss to not say I felt a little sad to not be back in the basements with its unique and comfortable charm.

Excellent time and really wonderful authentic food

Been a few times previously and always enjoyed. Restaurant opened new area upstairs. Now one of the prettiest restaurants in Manchester. Amazing scenery, toilets unbelievable. They have clearly spent a lot of money on it and it’s outstanding. But the food was unbelievable too. It was even better than I remembered. So tasty. All the people who work there are also so nice and friendly.

Went on a Friday evening not busy other than one pre booked group. We informed we had not pre booked but would be a table of 3, our friend was running late by 30mins. Thereafter we were asked by 5 separate staff did we order and even the manager said he wished to split our table if our 3rd member didn’t arrive. This was no more than 5 mins in. Both of the older male managers had no customer service skills and created a bad atmosphere. After the constant bothering despite us already ordering drinks we said we were happy to process starters then order mains as our friend arrived. Bare in mind the restaurant was not busy and didn’t become busy. We ordered soup and bread it took 40 mins to arrive, whilst it was good food it took far too long. Once our friend arrived the staff then ignored the opportunity to serve. Upon placing orders for mains it was around 30 mins later we were told the vegetable moussaka was available, again why so long to tell us basic info. Thereafter, food came out late and with large gaps, one member of the party was half way through their dish before the others had came. Again it was not busy and we were not informed. The manager was eager to clear the table. When we asked the server to bring the bill and card reader he went missing until we asked again. We asked to remove the extortionate service fee for this reason. Manager didn’t care or provide an apology when we raised the issues. The Ukrainian and other female server tried their best. The manager kept messing around with the music and lighting which ruined the already poor atmosphere. Overall poor communication and service for a restaurant that is attempting to serve high quality food and atmosphere. Food is okay but wouldn’t return in a hurry.

I hope this message reaches your management team. Upon visiting your website, I noticed significant errors in the spelling of the Ukrainian classic borshch and the use of Kyiv instead of Kiev. This comes across as either a lack of respect or a misunderstanding of the culture of the countries whose cuisine you represent at your establishment. I hope for a prompt response and a swift resolution to this matter.

Staff was excellent and very gracious when I had to make a last-minute change to my order. Food was great. I had an Armenian meat & veg soup that was similar to a goulash, and very tasty. Construction going on outside but they are still open. You need to go down a long flight of stairs to go in. It’s a cozy place but well maintained. I recommend it. Look up to find their sign; it has a beautiful mandala logo on it. It is not wheelchair accessible.

Majority of the menu is Middle Eastern and Georgian cuisine. If advertised as an Armenian restaurant, I expect to be provided with authentic food from Armenia even if limited in choice/variety.

Beware Beware Beware !!!! Rude management, no customer service skills, abrupt and very selfish. Suggested you MUST pay service charge - although the service was poor. Service charge isn’t a law, and isn’t compulsory!! Please note home made vodka is the SAME price as Grey Goose, yet taster far worse! (Changed for 300ml of home made vodka £60 and it's not even price for home made vodka in menu!). On the good note, the food was good. Won’t be returning here for sure!

serviced can be optimized by using right technology. it is not that expensive lamb skewers is nowhere near what it suppose to be, try kobeda at al jazeera or lamb kofte at kurdistan, or even wimple turkish places selling kofte. it is too dry, it needs more fat, less cumin. Chef has to evolve techniques and palate. Also menu design doesnt go together with anything, if i come to place like this i want to order a lot of everything but prices doesnt allow to do so. it can be great family sharing place like many places in Manchester and London evoleved to. i dont think armenian cuisin can be appreciated in starter / main Seekh Kebab in Kabana is 1.50£ it has more flavor, more charcoal flavor and it comes with nice salad, your labs skewers are 16£ I am not asking you to lower the price for it but to raise quality, use kurdjuk perhaps. Thank You

As a restaurant this is fantastic. Great food and brilliant service. However a roudy party completely obvious to others took the enjoyment out of what would have been a fine dining experience with friends.
