Apsley Fish Bar in Dacorum

i had not been to apsley fish and chip shop for quite about year, as i was passing i thought i would treat myself to a doner kebab and chips, what a waste of money, the kebab meat was really dry ( like the lid had been left off so the air can get to it ) , the chips was really crunchy like eating pork crackling, i dont know what has gone wrong there but they have really let themselfs down this time

Last time I ordered from here the food was amazing. Now it’s terrible, the fish was ok but the battered sausage was soft with a rubbery, thin, tasteless batter and the chips (see picture) were inedible, hard, green, brown, dried out. Now I don’t mind paying £20 when it’s good but this was like being mugged. Doubt very much I’ll be ordering again. Just compare photos from my last review.

Just ordered from here for the first time, delivery took 30 mins on a Saturday afternoon at 17:30, I’m so glad I did. The portions are massive, the batter is light and crispy. Good sized fish.(see picture) and that is a medium, I even gave some to my partner because it was too big. All hot and fresh too. A little bit pricey but worth every penny. 10/10.

I order a medium shish kebab and a large sish kebab I got shish chicken with rice no nan and salad in tubs So not only did I have to assemble my own dinner using wraps from my own kitchen but add insult to injury cost me over £16 for 10 bits of chicken rice and some salad I will not go there again as I order things and get something totally different

Had haddock and chips delivered. Huge thick succulent fillets of fish in a perfect crispy batter. Not too greasy,not thicker than the fish like some places. Chips look a little 'scruffy' as real chip shop chips are rather than many 'perfectly' regular frozen offerings. We prefer tasty to pretty. A mistake to order a large portion between two as we STILL had loads left over. (Chip butty for supper anyone?). Appears a little pricey until you see the portion sizes and quality of fish. Best I have tried in this area and actually the best I have bought in a very long time. Had been recommended by locals a few years ago and now try to go there when I am in the area and want fish and chip. Consistently good.

Well okay. The first issue is the prices; higher than other local fish and chips shops. So you’d expect something special. Unfortunately, not. We received oily fish (very oily!) and average chips. Nothing special and not as good as alternatives in the area. We ordered and collected in person. £20 for 2 standard fish, 1 large and 1 medium chips and a fish cake. Not good value for money considering the large amount of oil dripping from the small pieces of fish.

Love this shop. Really friendly staff, really good fresh food delivered hot. Been using them for some years. Very pleased with the service and value for money. I’ve eaten in the restaurant for lunch as well.

Super fresh. The ribs were full size and cooked perfectly. Singapore noodles were spot on and full of flavour. Chicken balls were spot on. Curry sauce tasty. Chow mien was good. All round cracking takeaway!

Uber Eats said delivery would be about 40mins-1hr, it took quite a bit longer than that which meant we chased the restaurant. However the food arrived hot and really good quality. Really enjoyed and will try again soon!

I have eaten in, collected and often have deliveries from here as the food is just so good and each time I'm not disappointed. We used to use lawn lane but they got unbelievably awful so we wanted to find somewhere else. Enter apsley fish bar. Really pleased with how nice the food is. Always big portions and good quality for your money. Love their chips. Always crispy and light. We often get halloumi made into Kebabs here and they are so good. Staff are always friendly and happy to accomodate too which helps :) would recommend.

A decent piece of cod and nicely cooked chips. What's not to like! Good polite service and a busy place means everybody knows the food is worth returning for.

My cousin and I come here for a meal once a year, the anniversary of my mother and her father's birth in 1923. They were twins, born there when it was our grandfather's shop. Last night the food was hot and excellent, very reasonably priced too. Great service by a lovely chap behind the counter.

We regularly collect from AFB or order for delivery [for which there is a minimum £14 charge] and have several times eaten in the restaurant with grand-kids. We have many choices of fish & chip shops in Hemel and have tried others but return here because of the consistent quality of the chips and the batter but also the attitude of the staff. I am prompted to write this because of the unbelievable allegation of food poisoning which could only be firmly established as a source by laboratory testing samples from the sufferers. Delivery times of 45-50 minutes at busy times is long and understandable but important to know. roygbiv45

Never used Apsley before and was pleasantly surprised , tasty cod and chips , will definitely use again

Have been using this take away for about 18 months now food usually good but the last few times when you order it is always 45 minutes to a hour but this is very rarely the case it either turns up in 15 minutes or nearly a hour and a half. I mentioned it to the delivery driver and he admitted they just say that to everyone who orders. This is not really acceptable when you order it to coincide when your going to get home if it’s early or stone cold when it’s late

Staying in Apsley and hungry after a long walk by the canal. Fairly long wait while it was freshly cooked so we had high expectations. Lots of batter nothing special with the fish and way too many pretty greasy fries. Filled a gap but not worth the calories.

dont eat from here, i had food poising, was off work for a week, plus the staff are extremely rude. all my friends were ill and had time off work, it doesnt cost anything to be polite.

We bought takeaway F&C with mushy peas. Staff friendly, service prompt and the batter was light, crispy and delicious. £17.10 seemed a little pricey but the food was fab.

Since the change of ownership the quality of food has improved enormously. Chips are great, nice and crisp. Great attitude to customer service.

Yo era un cliente habitual antes de las reformas. Quiliity fue excelente. Sin embargo, ahora con la nueva administración que parece que no tienen ni idea acerca de kebabs. Me refiero a la salsa de yogur y menta menta es y aderezos que usan mayonesa...

One of the best doner's i have had. Well done. Totally been refurbished looks very and the seating area looks amazing. The price is very responsible.

This chips shop has now closed (February 2016) and awaits new management. We wish the new owners good luck and no matter what, they can't cook fish and chips as bad as the last owners.

Under previous management, (Chinese owners), this was my favourite Fish'n'Chip shop in the town; it even won many prestigious awards. I'm afraid my last 2 visits however, will be my last; on the first, I was sold what I consider to be a piece of fish that was all thick batter with not much fish inside; I think it had been in the hot cabinet for far too long, but how do you know this till you are home?The second of my visits made me ill and again I think I was served a piece of Haddock that maybe had been there too long. I should have gone back to complain but this shop is well out of my usual way and I only went there because of past reputations. No more though.

Value for money, excellent service and great food, what more could you want? Try it you will be pleasantly surprised.

This fish and chip shop has a sign in the window to the effect of winner of chip shop of the year. The sign is faded, has been there for years and I can only assume that if it was awarded this, it was many years ago, possibly with different owners.The chips are always poor quality here, very greasy. Fish quality varies from day to day, with most days being dry and taste/appearance of having been hanging around all day waiting to be sold/eaten.There are many other fish and chip shop's nearby, certainly within a 2 mile radius that are far better. Avoid this one and try the others.

Great meal, nice portions and sensibly priced , eat in or take away worth a visit. A total change from its previous existence

Cooked fresh and really tasty. Only criticism is the portions were so big. That is not a bad thing now is it?
