We visited this beautiful wee gem tucked away in this pleasant suburb of Edinburgh: Newington. The lovely couple who own it ( and two sister restaurants in the city) explained they have changed their emphasis to wine by the glass or bottle with upmarket snacks from local high quality suppliers such as Iain Mellis cheese. We loved the cosy autumn into winter vibe: beautiful tasteful lighting enhanced this. They have a truly fabulous selection of wine to suit all tastes. We can’t wait to go back!

Recommended by our host we decided to eat there. But as it is, many smaller restaurants suffer and can’t get suitable staff. Therefore we had to book a table for Saturday and not for Sunday as planned. We did not regret it. The quality of the food was excellent, the service very very friendly and always attentive. Finding food when you have multiple allergies is difficult, but our visit to the Apiary completely turned that theory on its head. On explaining the range of allergies we had in the group, the staff literally told us nothing was a problem and they could make anything work and oh my they delivered. The food was absolutely delicious, bespoke and clearly made with passion, coupled with a service that was outstanding and married attention to detail, efficiency and a pinch of fun and banter. The Apiary experience was exceptional as it allowed us the option to deliver a 3 course meal, which is rare when you have multiple allergies. The staff were phenomenal and created a relaxed environment that made us feel as if we were old friends and couldn’t have done more to cater for all our needs. I would wholeheartedly recommend this superb little restaurant and they will see both Jenni & I again.

The ambiance was not our cup of tea seemed like a place for students and other University types. The seat covers looked a little tired and not clean. I thought the food was excellent overall. The Scallop starter was on the bland side but the Beef blade bourguignon was really nice. Bit strange no mushrooms in the dish and the pancetta was a bit rough (Spanish rather than Italian?) The smoked potato was a new experience but a good one. The staff were attentive.

This restaurant has nice decor, friendly staff and some good food. It is a pity that the serving times are quite extraordinarily slow and one is kept waiting 30 or 40 minutes for one’s food. If you have something to do, for example a train to catch or a scheduled hospital visit, this is profoundly inconvenient and irritating. I assume that in the restaurant trade there is some generally accepted waiting time. Whatever that time is, The Apiary exceeds it.

I visited this place with my partner for dinner. Ordered a starter salad as a main dish from the chef's specials. Salad was tasty however it arrived on a side plate and certainly not a dinner portion size, for double the price of £14. Prawns were batter flied too so not really much protein on the plate to satisfy the hunger. It definitely wasn't worth the money. Ended up having some Jerk chicken off my partners dish (which was delicious) and more food when I got back home because I was still very hungry. I was offered a side dish by the waitress but I wasn't prepared to pay any extra for the meal. After the main, my partner asked for a gealic coffee (coffee with whisky) but instead he got a plain cappuccino. Food tasty enough, experience didn't live up to expectations. We will not be back. Waiting staff nice and welcoming.

Not long home from a family dinner at The Apiary. A cozy little Newington restaurant I've passed thousands of times but never ventured in. That was definitely my mistake. It was midweek in January, before payday, so the restaurant was fairly quiet. There was a good selection of starters and mains and some cracking specials. The wine list was also good and some interesting beers. The waitresses clarified any queries with the menu, allergies etc and were very personable. The food came in good time and was excellent. The four of us definitely had a certain degree of food envy over each others plates during the meal. The meal was reasonably priced and having looked at the breakfast and lunch menus, we'll definitely be back!

Whilst in Edinburgh staying with friends, we went out to Dinner at the Apiary Restaurant. Three of us ordered the Pork - only to be told that it was not available - surely we should have been told us this when being given the Menus? Portions of the mains we thought fairly small for the price being charged. However, the Restaurant partly redeemed themselves with the quality and taste of desserts. The Restaurant was very quiet on the evening we visited (a Sunday) - perhaps a reflection on the prices being charged.

It's a nice restaurant serving imaginative and tasty food. And on the whole, it is good value for money. However, on a recent pre-theatre visit, we felt there were some issues with portion sizes (i.e. too small). As an example, the 'market fish' option turned out to be sea bream. Now, your average sea bream is not a big fish, and the one they used for my meal was arguably smaller than average. So it would not be unreasonable to expect both fillets in a dish that was priced at £16. But no, one fillet, very nice but really quite small, accompanied by a veritable abundance of white beans, olives, etc. So, all very tasty, but totally unbalanced. I would rather have paid a supplement and got more fish and fewer beans. There were one or two other issues with portion sizes which I won't go into, but the important point is that this sort of thing can easily be the deciding factor in whether one chooses to return to a restaurant.

Table arrangements were odd and you needed to be skinny to fit into the booths! I tried several booths and I clattered my leg on the metal table ends. If I were returning for a meal I'd need to ask for a table in the general restaurant area as the booths space are far too small. While staying with friends we went to the Apiary for Sunday breakfast. The food was excellent (I had the eggs Benedict) and there was a wide range of choice for the vegetarians amongst us. I usually go for the full fry-up but this wasn't on the menu. I really didn't miss it!

We had a great lunch at the Apiary recently. There was nine of us which had no effect on service or timings, we all had our food at the same time. I had the pork schnitzel which was delicious. Everybody in our group were happy with their meal and we would all go again. It is family friendly too which is nice. We opted for the £12 menu, you get to choose two courses. Great food, good atmosphere and easy enough to get to. Would warmly recommend.

We have been regular customers of The Apiary's sister restaurant, the Three Birds, but had only visited the Apiary once, which was for lunch. With a film screening at the Festival Theatre (about 10 mins walk away) we decided to try dinner and were able to book an early Saturday evening table for four.

My son booked us into this restaurant while we visited them in Edinburgh. So glad he did as we had an excellent meal served by great staff. The food was excellent with good choices. Overall a top place to eat.

After a reservation mix-up at a sister restaurant we experienced the most amazing customer service when the staff organised for us to be accommodated at Apiary. We were warmly welcomed by the excellent staff and the service continued to be exemplary throughout the evening.

Good atmosphere and menu with pleasant informal service. Very good specials available on the food and wine, eg warm fish platter and Givry. Great effort in the face of strong local competitors

We were a party of eight, booked for a Saturday concert at the Queen’s Hall. We phoned The Apiary, having found them on Trip Advisor. They confirmed they could accommodate us at what would be a busy time, provided we could arrive by 5 pm. In the event, holiday traffic led to problems with the bus service. Although 15 minutes late, we were warmly welcomed by staff who proved delightfully friendly, helpful and professional throughout our meal.

Was at the Apiary a few weeks back with 10 work colleagues after visiting the nearby escape rooms. On arrival the restaurant was still busy from the lunch service however our table was reserved and the staff showed us all to our seats. The staff were very welcoming and friendly and were quickly on hand to offer advice on the menu and available specials. We all went for the 2 or 3 course set menu for around £13, food arrived quickly and was very nice, well presented and flavoursome. We were in the restaurant for around 2.5 hours and throughout this time the atmosphere was friendly, fun and somewhere I would return to if back in this area.

We went here after we were let down by another restaurant. Some things happen for a reason and this was a beautiful find... we shared the Big Cow to share between two and it was the best best steak I have ever eaten in my life. Cut like butter and cooked to perfection. Stunningly amazing food would recommend over and over again. Thank you for taking our last minute booking!

Never had a bad meal here - superb value and a menu that changes quite regularly. Puts some of the "high-end" restaurants to shame

Came here for brunch of a Sunday, and was impressed by a very inventive menu. Had a delicious meal of ox cheek, potato, fried eggs and white barbecue sauce which was exquisite. Good coffee and attentive service as well, and I was a fan of the bee themed decor. Very impressed!

I absolutely love Three Birds and so was very excited to try out Apiary. It’s a lovely menu (superb for gluten free) and I can’t fault the food at all, all dishes were very tasty. The menu doesn’t make the pre-theatre rules clear so, for others’ benefit, I’m told you need to book your table between 5.30pm and 5.45pm to benefit from the deal. This seems quite limited for such a heavily advertised deal and it wasn’t explained to us by any staff member which led to us feeling a bit disappointed when the bill arrived. It’s still good value and so it wouldn’t stop me suggesting you give it a try but it’s just good to know what you’re signing up for.

Five of us dined here recently on a visit to Edinburgh. One of our group needs gluten-free options, and The Apiary offers almost an entire menu of gluten-free items. The service was very good and the food delicious and the prices reasonable. The one quibble was that it took a little long for the food to come to the table, although to be honest it may have just seemed that way since it was rather late (we were the last group to leave the restaurant) and we were famished when we arrived. But I would definitely recommend this restaurant - especially if anyone in your party wants more than one or two choices of GF options, as they usually get on a 'regular' menu.

Stopped off here between Edinburgh Fringe Festival shows for a spot of late lunch (it is near the Cameo cinema where the Film Festival is hosted). What a treat! Friendly, welcoming staff and an appealing menu with a mild Turkish slant. The vegetable soup was outstanding, the goat's cheese salad was fresh, tasty and generously sprinkled with a variety of seeds and my partner raved about the bacon roll and tea. What's not to like.? Everything on the menu looked equally delicious. The prices were frankly modest. A most enjoyable light lunch.

My husband and I came for the 7-course dinner almost a year ago, and were so blown away by the food that we wanted to bring our daughters back to enjoy the experience. Having raved about the food, we then thought that we might have over-hyped it and they would be disappointed. We needn't have worried. The 7-course meal, accompanied by the phenomenal flight of wines, was as delicious, unfussy, and indulgent as we had remembered it, set in relaxed and unpretentious surroundings, with wonderfully friendly and attentive staff. And worth every penny - we've paid a lot more for far less. Definitely our most memorable meal in a long time, for all the right reasons - Purslane alone is worth a trip to this beautiful city.

Food was good value for the price but let down by lack of decor and lack of drinks available. Wouldn’t go back.

We took the front row seat at the Chef Emma Hanley’s table and watched the talented Chef create extraordinary dishes in a cool and calm manner. After the dishes were served Emma would come to our table and introduce each one or the dishes personally. The whole experience was very demure and very mindful! Recommend this experience if you are looking for a extra special experience for a special occasion.
