Antico Birtley at The Board Inn in Gateshead

Family gathering we booked for 6pm ( happy hour) - we arrived 5.45 and bought drinks in the bar (£35). At 6.10pm we were told our table was ready - we sat so at 6.20pm we asked for service - waitress came and took order for drinks and then for our food. After a nice meal (we are regulars) we got the bill - it was £193 but noticed the happy hour prices had not been included - this only added around £18 to our bill but raised it with the manager fully expecting the bill to be amended. In the presence of customers I was told the order went in the 'till' at 6.31pm and therefore full prices applied !!. The booking was 6pm and the problem was due to the delay in service. I couldn't believe the manager didn't have discretion - the amount was small but his decision means we will probably never revisit.

Had a lovely meal here tonight, took our one year old and we was worried he was being too loud, the owner told us not to worry and that they are a child friendly restaurant.. food was amazing ! Best lasagna I’ve ever had. Garlic mushrooms to start were lovely too and my husband had a prawn pasta dish which he loved.

What an amazing place. Food fantastic, atmosphere great, service excellent. We were staying at travelodge a1 Washington and receptionist recommended it...thank you Olga will definately return. Highly recommend x

Nice first time visit to Antico and it was really good. Nice mussels starter not the biggest mussels but really tasty and the cream sauce was delicious I moped it up with the ciabatta bread. Main was chicken in a mushroom cream sauce with peppers it hit the spot nicely and the 2 pints of Moretti went down a treat, we will return.

we were disappointed this evening. I couldn't recognise peppercorn sauce on black pudding and the bread it was served in was stale. Also side salad just a sprinkle out a bag. garlic bread and cheese... not fresh garlic. wrong main for my husband but was replaced while keeping mine warm! replacement main of tagliatelle bolognese was bland and my seasonal veg were a bit of a waste of time as the carrots were almost raw and a sprout of broccoli and 2 small potatoes. my chicken was breast, but did arrive on the bone. an extremely expensive tea! probably won't return. very dissappointing indeed

What a fantastic restaurant! I'm visiting my parents fron down south, and we came here with a party of 11 for a family meal. The food was delicious and plentiful. One thing g to be aware of, the 'nibbles' on the menu are sharing size - I got some potato skins as a side, and it turned out to be the size of a main! So a perfect size for a couple of people to share. The service was excellent throughout. The staff are brilliant. Well worth a visit!

While the food and wine were enjoyable, and the atmosphere pleasant, my dining experience was overshadowed by the behaviour of a grey-haired man who made one of his colleagues cry. The colleague was a lovely young waitress, who had exceptional manners and contributed to my overall experience. This unfortunate incident greatly detracted from an otherwise enjoyable evening.

At Antico, the food's a treat and the prices are fair, but there's this older gentleman who brings a bit of a gloomy atmosphere. Seems to carry an air of superiority, which dampens the otherwise pleasant ambiance. It'd be a shame for such a charming spot to be overshadowed by one individual's demeanor. The rest is fantastic and will be back for sure !

Great food and service. Brilliant friendly staff. Two adults and a child fed and watered off the early bird menu for £55 which included a tip. We will definitely return when we are in this neck of the woods again.

The restaurant is quite large, there are several floors, there are private rooms, the food is delicious and fresh, good service, the toilets are up the stairs, there is alcohol, suitable for groups and also for a romantic evening

First time here as I was staying the night in the wagon. Could not fault the food or the service. Everything on the menu was reasonably priced.

My sons loves this place so we took him for his birthday. The staff are great and nice atmosphere for such a small eating area. However, I wasn't impressed by my pizza. Wasn't a great deal of pepperoni on it and it wasn't cut into slices. Not sure if this is normal of this Italian restaurant. But a right job trying to cut it into slices using the normal fork and knife.

Eat here quite regularly.....and the food is always delicious. Had salmon last week- perfectly cooked and the cream sauce 👌👌👌 Relaxed atmosphere and always made to feel very welcome.

My family and I are regular customers at this lovely Italian restaurant. Food is always delicious, and it has anauthentic Italian taste. Besides fantastic food, the ambient is very relaxing with friendly staff. They are extremely attentive and would go step above to make sure you're totally satisfied. Domenico is our favourite person there even though they're all amazing! They also serve Sunday lunch, which is perfectly cooked every time. The dessert menu has a well selected choice of the most popular cakes and coffees. The restaurant is cosy and suitable for couples, parties, or family gatherings. If you haven't visited this place yet, then you should definitely try it.

Lovely find, and we do enjoy an Italian. The only fault appears to be a language barrier. Peretti is not Heineken! And warm brownie is not Brandy. Other than that, it was a good experience.

Food was great in general. Chips a bit on the crispy side for my tastes. Service could have been a bit faster. They were packed though. Parking is very limited too.

First time here and not disappointed. Nicely decorated with relaxing atmosphere. Looks nice and clean. Staff really nice and pleasant. Food served nice and hot and good tastes. Chips could have been better. Not very brown but that's personal choice. Didn't expect to see a 50p charge on the bill for each small pot of dip, and it wasn't mentioned when we asked for them. However we would still return.

Did not expect this kind of restaurant in Birtley. Nice place with Italian climate, affordable. Very friendly staff. Food tasty but could be more Italian less British. I ordered fried squids for a starter and fillet steak for the main meal. Squids were nice with garlic sauce. Steak was perfectly cooked to my favourite medium rare flavour, but peppercorn sauce I found a bit too salty. My wife ordered Bruschetta for a starter, and she enjoyed it a lot. For mains, she got spaghetti carbonara, which she found a bit bland but not too bad. Although not close to the original Italian recipe. We will go back as we enjoyed the evening and we want to try different meals. I would recommend that place to a friend.

Food is always top quality and my husband being a chef, is very hard to please. Service is the best and everyone is so friendly. Was there for my birthday last night with my husband who always orders rwo pints of Fosters at a time. Great meal as always.

Absolutely wonderful place. The atmosphere; the staff; the food were all magnificent and created a truly beautiful night. The host was energetic, charismatic and brilliant with the kids. Every time he came to our table, there were smiles and laughter. The authentic Italian experience, wonderfully helpful and friendly staff along with the intimate design of the restaurant itself makes this one of the best places I've ever dined.

Excellent Italian food, would recommend

I've been here many times with my family and it's amazing. The food is always delicious and it's so well priced, nothing is expensive and the food quality is really high. The staff are absolutely lovely and go out of their way to make you feel at home. The pizzas are absolutely unreal and massive and I always take half home. Highly recommend!

Excellent meal. The prawns and mussels were lovely as was the sea bass and sea food cooked in foil. Menu also has the expected pasta and pizzas. Wine menu is good, particularly for white. Service was also very good. Highly recommended.

Although the name has changed it's still the same family running it and same fantastic food. The decor has been brightened up, it's nice. Enjoyed it greatly thank you

Great food , staff , friendly atmosphere

Went today for a family birthday and left very disappointed.. pizzas were stodgy, uncut and cold. Sunday dinner was beautiful to taste but also cold and when we witnessed another table being given a gravy boat from a customer who had finished their meal and left it put us off completely (this was done by the manager himself) when we received our Bill it was all Wrong with items added which we hadn’t had and when questioned we were told we had clearly had something which we couldn’t remember having, the manager became very rude and ignorant at this point and threw the bill Receipt across the table. Our bill was roughly £160 yet the 4 children who were with us were charged 50p each for each dollop of tomato/Bbq sauce with their meal. Absolutely shocking.
