Always been regulars but I’m not working due to covid 19 we’ve not had a Chinese in 9 weeks due to loss of income. Was so excited to hav our favourite Chinese. U now had to order then they text u to pay. So I waited & waited then rang to be told it was delayed. 45mins later rang again still delayed. She said I know you’re regulars but we’re very busy I said not to bother they will need their regulars back when this settles down. Obviously taking too many orders. Think I had a lucky escape as people have now said the food is reheated. Will becoming a regular somewhere else

Our go-to local Chinese for take out service, a good menu selection and very tasty food with lots of flavour, always warm and tasting fresh. Can’t comment on the delivery service as I always collect but staff have always been pleasant and friendly upon arrival and on the telephone.

In the strange times of the coronovirus we got a takeaway from here and apart from a small mistake with the order which was sorted immediately, I have to say this was the best Chinese takeaway I have had for years, absolutely superb. So tasty and absolute perfection we will definatley be buying again.

Booked for NYE dinner with my wife. We’ve been here before and given it good reviews (including last New Years Eve). On arrival we were told that it was banquet only - which meant that you could only have a really narrow selection of dishes (none of which appealed to me or the wife - who has partic dietary requirements). This was not mentioned in any way when booking a table or we wouldn’t have come! Spoke to the waiter - asking if we could just order off the standard menu (as we did last NYE) and were told no. Very odd given they didn’t have a problem last year (and I could see the staff preparing takeaways who I’m assuming weren’t having the banquet!). Ridiculously that I would sit in my house and order whatever I want and get it delivered, but I can come up to the restaurant and be told I have to eat what I’m told. I’m aware that they probably try to put the banquet on to make life easier in the kitchen. But there were only about 5 tables occupied in the entire place! I’m not a diva nor was I wanting to cut costs by buying the two cheapest dishes on the menu. I just wanted to eat food that was something I liked (and that met the wife’s requirements too). I’d have happily bought several starters/mains/sides/beers (and had even left the car and walked so I could enjoy a few drinks). Given this we decided to leave. On our way out we mentioned to the manager/supervisor that we were disappointed that we couldn’t eat what we wanted. He rudely told my wife that there was “no way we had the standard menu last year” Well we did - I can even remember what table we sat at! Being confrontational and accusing your potential customers of being liars is not really a great business model, nor does it encourage us to come back. He then attempted to back track and say that if we went back and sat down that we could have what we want. Given the way we were spoken to I was not happy to stay. After this we left and drove to get food elsewhere at 8pm on New Year’s Eve. We even emailed them went we got home to express our disappointment. As I’m all for supporting local businesses, and on my previous visits here I’ve actually found the food to be nice. But that counts for nothing if the service is rude and unhelpful. They actually replied suggesting it was all a big misunderstanding, and that it would have been fine for us to eat what we wanted as other tables and vegetarians had done the same. Definitely NOT what we were told. We were also offered to come back tonight for a discounted meal, with one days notice (after having had a Chinese meal last night from elsewhere). Overall I’m really disappointed in this place. I think service counts for as much as food quality. I will not be returning.

I am 50 and fat. I have eaten a lot of food and plenty of it Chinese. I am lucky enough to have been to China and Hong Kong and whilst I am no professional food critic I am at a loss as to why this restaurant scores so highly. Aside from the decor (which I may get to later) the food was awful except for the rice the tea and prawn crackers. Quite indeed almost completely empty on a Saturday night, to start with Gordon Ramsay would go to town on the menu which is extensive and bewildering. There was no Chinese curry on the menu but some Thai curries and some "oriental" versions but I had to ask for a Chinese Curry. Still selling Chinglish meals (like we used to see on Chinese Takeaway menus) the menu is throwback to times when more was more. It is a Jack of All Trades, Master of None menu sadly boutrne out by the offerings from the kitchen. The Cola was delivered flat and syrupy - someone hasnt changed the gas or calibrated the machine. Granted it was a reasonable price We settled on Salt and Pepper Beef, Lemon Chicken and a Beef "Chinese" curry with fried rice. The Chicken itself was OK but the batter was tough and chewy but the sauce was a gloopy unsophisticated mess - got to be the worst example of this dish I have had. The curry was OK but lets face it we all know its from a mix with some beef and mushrooms fried onions and thasts it - easily done at home after a trip to the Chinese Supermarket and it wasn't Maysan (which a decent product for use at home) which was something. The Salt Pepper Beef had way too much pepper in it and this was essentially the only flavour. Vegetables in there were huge chunks of onion and peppers (not mentioned on the menu becasue that doesnt fit wit hthe pick and mix approach they have taken to extend the menu even further) No interest at al lfrom water chestnuts or bamboo shoots or anything else mildly exotic, Beef, Onion Peppers Cornflour water and pepper near enough -- perhaps some garlic in there and a bit of stock etc etc ... just dreadful. The meat itself was OK The rice was ok -- good portion So .. if you have no idea what decent chinese food tastes like and have new been to Stowell Street -this place might be for you.. The decor is bad really but the seats are incredibly uncomfortable. Padding felt like a DIY job with the cheapest foam you can buy on eBay ensuring you feel the edge of the chair the whole time you are sat on it. My wife said the bench wasn't comfortable either...certainly not the original pub bench, Being an ex pub isn;t the problem it is the ambience over all that needs work. Les effort has been expended here than in the kitchen when the concept of different types of lighting is alien to the owners resulting in a stark uniform light that just makes the place look even more sparten and devoid of interior design of any kind whatsoever... Seriously avoid this place ... unless you want a laugh...it is dreadful on every level...

Drove past hundreds of times and never been in so had a Saturday lunch with a Groupon voucher. We added some soup and noodles as extras to the Groupon deal and all 3 courses were spot on. Soup very tasty with plenty of chicken and free prawn crackers. Ribs and Satay amazing. Mains generous portions and very tasty, you could taste the ginger in the chicken dish and the black pepper in the beef dish which is not always the case. Rice and noodles spot on. Service great and unhurried. Would def go back with or without a Groupon!!!

This is the place that loads of people have heard about but have never bothered to go to yet. Firstly, they do sit in service and takeaways. Ok, so sit in service means your table is in a converted pub which does lack a little character compared to a traditional Chinese restaurant but they have made it very present. No matter whether you decide to eat in or takeaway, one thing is for sure and that is you are in for a treat. The food at Miji is fantastic. They offer a very comprehensive menu and the quality is at a very high standard - probably higher than most restaurants and certainly all takeaways in the area. Well worth a visit!

We selected a variety of dishes: steamed pork dim sum and vegetable spring rolls were a smashing starter and good and hot. The ginger and spring onion vegetarian 'duck' (seitan) was described by the meat loving husband as one of the best Chinese dishes he's ever had: really fresh flavours. We also had vegetable fried rice; crispy pork in honey and spicy sauce and Szechuan beef. All were very tasty. It was ready to pick up very quickly and we ate with some glee. We were stuffed and still had loads left, so plenty left for lunch tomorrow. An excellent takeaway. Thank you very much.

Just returned from a fabulous meal. All the staff made you feel welcome from walking through the door to when you leave. We went for a family meal myself, husband, daughter (1 year old) and my parents. We were all impressed with the amount of choice on the menu. The dry house white was really lovely - we could’ve had another bottle easily. The men were happy with the choices of beer on offer. Little one enjoyed sitting in the high chair and sampling some of our food. From the starters to the puddings we all agreed that the food was really good and wouldn’t think twice about returning. I cannot speak highly enough of this restaurant and would recommend it without reservation. Visited on Saturday night with my husband and two teenage kids and it was simply one of the nicest Chinese meals we have had in years. Even the two teenagers cleared their plates, which is quite something as they are both very picky and not easy to please. Every course that we had was absolutely delicious, the sharing started was to die for. Also, the staff could no do enough for us to ensure that we enjoyed our evening. Came to miji this evening with my fiancé, we live just down the road and had never been in til tonight, after getting a menu through the door earlier in the week. We had crispy aromatic quarter duck with pancakes for starter, this was genuinely tasty and crispy- pleasantly surprised. For the main course I had my favourite salt and pepper garlic king prawns with chilli- I’ve been eating this meal for many many years from the same takeaway, and I must say I was not at all disappointed, it was so tasty and spicy like I asked. A generous helping of decent sized prawns. No complaints from me! My other half got a chefs special scallop and asparagus meal in XO sauce which was also delicious. Lovely fresh and perfectly cooked scallops. The food is bloody lush!

Early evening midweek set menu, 6 of us went out for a birthday. The place was until recently a big old pub. It retains some of that ambience but with a Chinese twist. We were the only people eating in but plenty of people came to get takeaways while we were there. The set menu was all absolutely delightful. Starts with chicken and sweet corn soup, then a starter platter with spring rolls, prawn toast, seaweed and ribs. Beautifully presented with sculpted vegetables etc. The mains included shredded beef, beef in black bean sauce, chicken and mushroom and the most delectable duck in plum sauce. Not a thing to fault. Unobtrusive and pleasant service from the waiters. Cannot recommend it highly enough. We won’t be trooping up to Iveston for the foreseeable. This place is at least as good.

This is the third time i have had a meal here. It is the old Board Inn pub and bears the hallmarks of it still. Please do not be put off by the décor and the fact it is not a modern shiny Chinese restaurant as most are nowadays. The server for us today was a man who i have never seen smiling as much in my life, nice to have genuine Chinese people as staff instead of young teenagers on their first jobs. The restaurant is very quiet, i think the location does not help itself hidden away off the main road between Blaydon and Ryton. It also does a takeaway service from the bar / reception which is continuously busy, so that in itself is a good sign.We had the Special Banquet which is £10.95 per person and is a starter, main meal and sweet. It is a superb price for the food served as well.We all had chicken and sweetcorn soup and added the crispy duck to fit in-between the starter and main. For the main course we had battered chicken between in honey and chilli sauce and satay chicken, for sweet, a deep fried ice cream and cheesecake. The wine was a good price as well.We left full and absolutely satisfied, the meal on this occasion and the previous two occasions was excellent and a real treat. The price as well was superb for the large amount of food you do get.If you can see past the unique environment, and the fact it is a very quiet restaurant on a Sunday evening, you will be very satisfied with what you get.

Where do I begin. What a shambles of a 'restaurant'. Eight friends and visited the Miji for a pleasant evening, what occurred could only be described as a severely disappointing experience. After waiting 15 minutes for a pint of cordial that cost £2.50 i thought the starter would follow shortly, how shocking wrong I was is almost untrue. When the meals did eventually arrive, a thick black hair was plucked from the centre of my meal. My friends crispy noodles came fresh out of an Aldi super noodle pack and was charged an eye popping £10.90. Pitiful, disgusting and overall disgrace are words I would use to describe the standard of food. Moreover, our quiet group were subjected to having to sing happy birthday to a wall which a child was behind over the other side of the restaurant. The service was not attentive and when they did interact in invaded everyone's personal space. I am truly outraged that once such a nice place could plunder into such disarray.

Most of the previous faults have been eliminated and the quality of the food bettered and the welcome was exceptional. the meal took longer than we expected as everyone was enjoying themselves so much. we eventually had problems getting the two oldies to leave they were so enthralled with the experience and all this at the still very reasonable prices. based in an old pub we were a little apprehensive as to what we would find beyond the front doors. but while it still has many features from its days as a public house it has been tastefully been refurbished. the tables are well spaced and nicely decorated with real flowers the whole place had a nice clean and airy feel to it although it was a little let down by the sight of an extension reel and electric heater in the middle of the floor. the welcome was warm enough and we were shown to our table and given the menu which I would describe as an english chinese and would have been better without the meaningless letters besides the dishes which are for the use of the waiting staff and without the disclaimer that the meals in the photographs may not look like the meal that you get. The whole thing was reasonably priced with set meals at £13 and £17 per person bottles of wine from £10.25 and a pint of Fosters £3.50. we plumped for a set meal at 17 pounds and could change the suggested menu for any other dish we fancied. the service was fine, the dishes turned up hot and tasty and timely and the table cleared quickly between courses. Although I think that a chinese meal should be served with a bowl and chopsticks rather that the knife fork and plate that we were given. While we enjoyed ourselves we did feel that certain aspects of the service were not very polished and it lacked that little something that turns an o.k. meal into something special but in saying that excellent value for money. we certainly will be going back

Went on a Sunday night, was very quiet, quite liked the background music and the old pub layout.Chose from the set menu £9.50 for 3 courses and I liked how the main came with chips or rice.I had crab meat soup for starter and pork soup with rice for main. Was nice and filling. We were all stuffed from mains so just paid without ordering desserts and the staff replaced them with a round of drinks without being asked.Waiting time was acceptable.I will go back and companions all agreed. Helped by the car park outside.I was only drinking soft drinks so couldn't comment on the drinks menu but the rest of the party seemed content.

The food is delicious, not had a bad meal and I have been a number of times. The staff are so friendly and accommodating, they can't do enough for you. It used to be a bar so I think people can be put off by the set up but you should not let this distract from the quality of the food and service.

We've been here a few times, both eating in and for takeaway, and we've never had a bad meal yet. It's easy to judge it by the bizarre decor inside (old style pub with new purple and white plastic furniture) but if you overlook that the food's good and the prices reasonable. We went recently on a saturday night and got a table without booking with no problem. We shared duck pancakes to start and had to ask for extra pancakes as there was only 4 between the two of us! However, extra were brought over with no issue. I ordered schezuan lamb and the other half had satay chicken-both great. The only thing I would like to see is a spice guide on the menu-the other half isn't a great fan of overly spicy food so often has to make an educated guess when he eats here!We didn't have dessert but did have a pint of beer and two glasses of wine. The bill was £40 by the time we added a tip, which we were more than happy with. I would have given 5 stars but I was a bit put off by being sat on a table next to another family. The restaurant was very quiet so it would have been nicer to be put at a table a bit further away so we couldn't hear each other's conversation! It would also be nice to see a bit more info on the menu, eg description of sauces and how spicy they are.

I took my family to Miji, (Board Inn) , as a final treat on the last evening of our weeks break in wonderful Northumberland. What a disappointment ! Very average menu with prices to compete with the best Chinese meals I have had . Stingy portions not particularly well cooked , finished off with a banana split ordered by my daughter - three blobs of ice cream with a cut in half banana and a squirt of cheap chocolate sauce. My coffee was obviously made with instant powdered muck , could not drink it !

Myself and my family live down the road from Miji so we often visit on a weekend. We eat in at the restaurant and the food really is delicious; many dishes served on sizzling hot plates which is a nice touch. The restaurant still looks very much like a pub which is strange when it's serving Chinese food, however don't let that put you off. The food is great and the staff are nothing but attentive.Food wise, I can highly recommend the satay chicken skewers and the house special curry.Myself and my partner recently ordered takeaway, however and this really wasn't great. The food was tasteless and cold which was such a shame given the food served when we've eaten in has always been perfect! I presume this was just a one-off.

This resteraunt suffers from being an old pub , hence it had little ambience , but the food is excellent and they are trying hard to make the presentation better since last year with more decor and table cloths . We go on a regular basis , the owner and staff are really lovely , the price is good and the food is great .They just need to sort out the lighting ,using large table lamps rather than what they have at the moment but give it a chance if you like Chinese food ,they deserve it .

Appreciate they are busy, but surely they need to be clearer when take away menu is available. i will in future book with another restaurant who appreciates and makes an effort to provide a restaurant or take away service.............

My partner and I ordered from here via just eat. We decided to spend our last 20pound on a takeaway and a night in. My boyfriend ordered and paid online at 6.40. 2hours and 20 minutes and still no food!! After various phone calls where we were passed between different staff members we had been told the delivery had gotten lost ( this was about an hour after we ordered). We got told he would be with us in the next ten minutes which never happened. I was told that because this takeaway was in Newcastle they didn't no the area. This is not my problem as I explained to the MANAGER, they should not advertise they deliver to gateshead. I told the manager I wanted my food and a refund. I was given a lot of abuse and was even called a c**t. I have had to ring just eat to get a refund which will take 5-7 working days and now we have no tea or no money. The way I was spoken to was out of order. All I wanted was a nice night in with my boyfriend and instead it had turned into a night of angry arguments. No one should be spoken to like this for using a service that they advertise.. DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE UNLESS U WANT ABUSE AND NO FOOD!!!

DONT let the look of the place put you off. Upon arrival we could tell it used to be a pub of some sort form the outside unfortunately the inside has not been changed much to alter the old pub style layout. Good menu, specific dietary request adhered to (no MSG and no Salt added to my food) good service but music playing was rather loud where we were sitting so a bit off putting. It is in need of a desperate makeover to settle the loud patterns and miss matched colors also the seating could be more comfortable. Lovely lady served us but the man who served could not keep eye contact it was quite odd and uncomfortable. Fast service and takeaways available. Try it for the food not for the ambiance.

I decided to treat a friend and her two daughters to a meal here tonight 19/12/14. My friend had been before and had said what a lovely meal they had. We went early as one of my friends daughters is only 11 months old. On entering the restaurant felt cold, they had two heaters trying o warm up a large area. The décor is very unusual as I was once a pub and they haven't changed anything. The tables are well spaced but give the place a feeling of emptiness. We were left to look at the menu. My friends daughter went to the ladies but came back out as she couldn't find the light switch and it appeared the only lighting was from tealights. We all ordered a different chicken dish with a side of egg fried rice and extra prawn crackers. I had ordered chicken chow mien. when the meals arrived they looked lovely. With mine being the plainest I gave some of my chicken to my friend to give to her youngest daughter. She cut it into small pieces as she done this she realised the chicken was raw in the middle. I called the waiter over and he said he would get another one. It came back very quickly which made me think they had just re heated my original dish. I decided to just eat the chow mien and leave the chicken. The chicken on the other two dishes was cooked. At the end of the meal they gave us complimentary ice cream. I asked for the bill and when I went to pay I asked if the chicken chow mien was still on the bill. I was informed it was but if I was unhappy he would take it off. I pointed out that I had left all the chicken as I didn't feel confident with eating it. He did take it off the bill. As I turned around to leave he started talking to the waitress in Chinese and I felt he was discussing me.This restaurant had no atmosphere, was cold and unappealing. It is very reasonably priced. I must admit even if the food had been nice I still wouldn't be going back

My hubby and I are big fans of oriental cuisine, but struggle to find eateries that meet our expectations. We tend to stick to what we know due to past experiences, but where we live doesn't have many options of dining out and found ourselves travelling far just to have a meal we knew we would enjoy. A family member recommended this place having dined their a few times previously. We were reluctant, but decided to brace ourselves and give it a try. What a find!! Got to the say the decor was slightly bizarre but the attentive staff helped us overcome the random dart board and pub-like dining. To be honest though, once the food was served, the decor was forgotten. We didn't play it too safe and ordered some of our favourite dishes, and we were pleasantly surprised. We enjoyed chilli salt and pepper ribs, chicken in satay sauce, yung chow fried rice, and special noodles with king prawns in black bean sauce. All delicious and to our taste. So much so, we've actually went back for a take-out the following week to enjoy at home with more of our favourite dishes. It's only 5 minutes along the road from us too!! Very happy customers indeed.

We were a little put off at first at the thought of a Chinese restaurant in an old pub, but am glad we got over that hurdle. If you are looking for a top notch Chinese restaurant with all the usual decor, then you'll be disappointed. Head to Stowell Street. The furniture is basic, tables are spaced out, but it does look like a pub.If you want great, unpretentious food in a relaxed and friendly environment, then you'll like Miji. The food isn't the cheapest, but the quality is excellent and there is lots of it. The staff are also very friendly and welcoming and as we've now been going for some time they know our regular orders!Miji is also a takeaway which is great if you just want a quiet night in.It does get busy at weekends, so best booking if you can.

What an awful place to eat. This is just an old Pub (there was a Dart Board on the wall) that serves terrible Chinese food.On arrival we were shown to a table, that was not set, and given a menu. The waitress did not ask if we would like a drink while deciding what to eat. We waited over 15 minutes for someone to take our order. Someone then brought some knives and forks and a cheap paper serviette. There were no place mats on the tables. We ordered the set menu for 2 plus a bottle of wine. The first course was Peking Duck and Pancakes which we both enjoyed. The second course of chilli prawns was literally 1 king prawn covered in a hot chilli sauce which masked. any flavour the prawn may have had. The main courses were Chicken in a Honey Sauce and the house special in Black Bean Sauce with Special Fried Rice. The Chicken was sickly sweet and the house special, a mixture of Beef, Pork and Chicken, tasted like the Fry ups my mother used to make with the left overs from the Sunday Dinner, with a Chinese Sauce. The not so special Fried Rice tasted like Uncle Bens with a touch of Soya Sauce and some tiny prawn embryos.I say embryos as they were so small I could hardly see them. The Staff were hopeless, I lost count of the number of times they dropped dishes and had to clean rice and other food from the floor. They forget our wine and when it did arrive the waiter started using a cork screw to open a screw topped bottle. The bill for the food came to £34.00 Plus £12.00 for the wine which would have been O.K. if it had been up to standard, but, unfortunately it will go down as one of the worst meals we have ever had.So I would advise people to stay away unless you want the Chinese equivalent of a Greasy Spoon Cafe

I took my family along to Miji's on a Saturday night, with the table booked for 8 o'clock. On arrival we were welcomed at the door and shown to our table. As previously stated the restaurant bears little or no resemblance to a traditional Chinese eatery, however the decor isn't that bad and the place was spotlessly clean and comfortable (although my bench seat did creak a lot)! After ordering we were promptly served with our drinks, and in no time at all after we ordered the meal it arrived at our table. The food was delicious, and although I didn't think it was a large serving I struggled to finish it. The restaurant was reasonably busy, but not crowded, and the people around us seemed very happy with their meals and the service. Prices weren't cheap, but nor were they overly expensive. All in all if you want a great meal, with a good level of service, I would strongly recommend Miji's If you prefer traditional Chinese decor then head for Stowell Street!

We went here for the 1st time yesterday and when we walked in we very nearly walked straight back out... it's in what was a pub and inside it still looks very much like an old man's pub. You are greeted with the bar the moment you walk in and looking around it can only be described as a bit grim. The tables are horrible and the chairs not much better, the whole ambiance when you set foot through the door is not good. I appreciate this is a small business and they probably have spent a lot setting up, but it doesn't feel or look like a Chinese restaurant, it looks like an old man's pub! We were shown to a table around the other side of the bar which was a bit nicer, same horrible tables but there were some plants on the window ledge (orchids) and a couple of Chinese decorations on the wall... all in all a tiny bit nicer but still not great, our expectation of the food at this point was not very good.Saying all that the food was actually nice, we had the duck starter to share which was nice, slightly greasy but lots of it, then I had Beef Satay and my Wife Pork in a Mandarin sauce... both good. The menu is rather uninspiring with mostly what you would get in a takeaway on there, although better to eat than a takeaway, I kind of feel that if the restaurant wants to attract people on a regular basis they need to offer something more interesting and exciting, it just was very much your bog standard 'sweet and sour pork', 'Kung Po Chicken' etc etc which you can get from any and every restaurant or takeaway. I would love to see some more traditional or interesting Chinese dishes on there.Service was good, maybe a touch on the slow side but overall good and friendly.Would I go back? Maybe, if they updated the décor and actually made it feel like a Chinese restaurant, which includes ditching the pop music (not being sung by the actual singer who made the song famous) and added some pizzazz to the menu. However they do takeaway and I'll definitely be buying that way in the future.Overall good but let down by a few things that could easily be changed

Living locally and having read the reviews we decided to give this restaurant a visit . This was formerly a pub and the interior has hardly altered and consequently doesn't have the "normal" decor of a chinese restaurant. Our visit was at 7pm on a friday evening and there was only another half dozen diners. By the time we left at 9pm the place was empty. I therefore dont need to comment on the atmosphere!! As for the food, perhaps we made the wrong choice in the set banquet for 4 but apart from the duck starter which was plentiful and tasty the remaining dishes were predominantly cooked in batter and with a lack of sauces was fairly bland.Service was good but given the lack of customers it was to be expected.I doubt that we will return.

Although we live very close to Miji, we've never been before, partly because they don't advertise and, as it is set back from the road on a difficult stretch, we drivers don't really notice it, just the sign board at the road's edge. But my wife and I popped in yesterday evening to give it a try and also with an extra motive. You see, we have used an excellent Chinese take-away in Burnopfield, three miles from us, for some years but it changed hands recently as in now less of an attraction to us. So we were looking for a replacement take-away and were told that Miji offers this service as well as being a proper restaurant. My review here contains no startling revelations as I agree with most of that which other reviewers said but, to confirm.....At 6:30pm on a Friday evening, this restaurant had only one other table occupied; not usually a good sign. The décor is quite odd as there has been no effort to change this from the pub it was just a while ago to a Chinese restaurant; it still feels like a pub and it has very little ambience. The tables are, however, set a decent distance apart so, if there ever were to be more than a few customers, your privacy is assured. The menu contains fewer selections than is often the case in similar establishments but what there is is perfectly adequate and you will soon realise that everything you want really is there. There is also a 'specials' board that I can assure you really is special. We skipped a starter and went straight to mains of king prawns in an excellent curry sauce (much nicer than a usual Chinese curry) for my wife and I chose the fresh scallops from the 'specials' menu. I may have had better meals than this in my life but I've never had better scallops; they were perfectly cooked to a succulent texture and flavour and accompanied by a ginger and onion sauce sufficiently delicate to not overpower the scallops. Delicious! Then there's the service. A swift, efficient and very friendly welcome from the young waitress followed by quick and attentive delivery of drinks while we selected. A protracted chat about the 'specials' and the products in general quickly showed the waitress to be passionate and knowledgeable about her food as she waxed lyrical about the freshness of the produce. We even had a discussion about the sourcing of the fresh ginger! Form the look and flavour of our meals, I'd say that she wasn't exaggerating Miji's commitment to fresh produce. We were then visited by the owner Kelly (well, actually, So Fun Loa to everyone except lazy Brits who can't manage Chinese names) and, before we left, we were fast friends. For us, even quick bites like this are judged as a whole event and this level of friendly and helpful service just makes for a much more pleasant experience. Add to that the very best of Chinese food and this place is a gem. I suspect that the mystery of why such a star of a restaurant is so poorly attended lies in the cost. Our meal for two, plus three, small, drinks came to some £34. I'm happy to pay that for a meal of this quality but it's two or three times as much as if I'd ordered the same things as a take-away. While we sat there, lots of people came in to collect take-aways (there is a separate menu) so my guess is that folk do appreciate the good food but prefer the lower cost of eating it at home. The good news for us is that we have, certainly, found our new take-away!If you're in the area, or even if you're not, go ahead and give Miji a try; you'll love it.

We went with friends for a mid-week evening meal and it was the best Chinese meal I've had for ages. The restaurant is unusual inside, having been a pub and still with the bar and some of the seating, but it works well and has some nice features like open fireplaces. The service was friendly and the food was excellent, really good portions and some unusual items on the menu. I had the mixed starter (ribs, won tons, prawn toast, seaweed, chicken satay, little spring rolls - I just wish I'd shared it with someone because it was huge. More than enough for two, if you want to leave room for your main course. I had roast duck in plum sauce which is served in a bird's nest (potato, if you've never had it before) and was delicious. The only odd thing was, no chopsticks - it seemed strange eating with knives and forks. Drinks are a decent price and overall the value for money was very good. We're planning to go back next weekend and take more friends with us.
