Angelo's Ristorante in Sunderland

I am so glad I stumbled upon this place as it is right up there with the best restaurants I have even been to, and I have found my new go-to place for a delicious Italian meal. I wasn't expecting much, however I was wowed by the quality of the food. So many places "do" Italian, but they do it poorly. This place does it perfectly! What sets it apart from the likes of Pizza Express and Ask is the authenticity of the place and quality of the ingredients. The tomatoes have a "tomatoiness" and intensity of flavour to them, the olive oil is spot-on, the pesto is to die for, and the mushroom pizzas cooked to perfection. I would like to thank the waitress for the kindness and thoughtfulness in recognising that I don't like noisy environments, and she placed me in a table slightly round the corner. After I'd downed a glass of Pinot Grigio I really relaxed and actually enjoyed the atmosphere. As someone on the autism spectrum, I would never have thought I would be able to go into a crowded restaurant on a football matchday / Friday night and enjoy it, but seemingly I can! Anyway if you're in central Sunderland and looking for a decent Italian meal that's a cut above the rest, you really cannot go wrong with Angelo's. I found it to be quite miraculous!

Basic food nothing special. Slow service. One particular staff member older man took our order such a miserable attitude.

We came to Angelos for bottomless brunch. Service was good, food was nice however, the portion sizes were small for the tapas for 5 of us. We were still hungry. Drinks were okay, however, for 90 minutes we hardly had any drinks compared to other bottomless brunches we have been to. Based on what we paid and what we had we wouldn’t return unfortunately.

Food was the best we have had in a long time. Best service we have had ever. Enzo was absolutely amazing, he was extremely attentive and friendly. It is clearly a family run business. The service was absolutely amazing and the food and drinks were fantastic! Highly highly recommend to anyone!

We had the best pasta ever. The service was fantastic. My friends and i just loved been there. The food was so fresh. We had the sord fish and the seafood pasta. Loved it. The tables were set beautifully and loved the sirving dishes it dose make a difference. Thankyou guys.

Have tried visiting Angelo’s a couple of times but never lucky enough to get a table…until last night! It was worth the wait. I had the gnocchi…simply the best pasta dish I’ve had since I’ve moved here. My partner had the inferno pizza. Beautiful crust and the base sauce was authentic and perfect!! The service was warm and friendly, and the decor cozy. We’ll definitely be back!! Tip: book a table in advance!

Me and my friends came for Bottomless Bruch. We had a warm welcome from Christina. Fed came and took our orders he was very friendly and offered us a welcome shot. A* service. The overall service was quick and efficient. Fed and Christina are such a lovely couple and the food was delicious. We all got various dishes with our brunch, which was faultless. It’s was OK nothing better. Staff attentive but Chef too busy impressing a table for 4 adjacent to us. Not sure the hype is good as the reality. Starter was good. Mains , Salmon, ok. Tiramisu small. Wine good, but pricey Thursday night admittedly but no atmosphere and quiet.

Came here yesterday with a group of friends for the afternoon brunch. Staff explained how it worked and recommended dishes on the menu. If there wasn’t a dish on the brunch menu what you wanted it wasn’t a problem there was just an extra £2 surcharge. Food was fabulous , great selection of drinks, staff were extremely helpful and really friendly. Great atmosphere , Cannot wait to go back.

Lovely friendly staff with excellent customer service but food was tasteless and of poor quality. Ordered off the special menu, brushetta which was a sliced of dry cold bread and tasteless tomatoes on top. Main I had seabass which was a very small portion in a bowl of soup (tasteless tomatoes soup at that). Not what was described on the menu. Very clearly the special menu portions were half the size of the full price menu. Some people enjoyed their ordered meal but overall a poor experience which I definetly will not be returning to try again. Very dissapointed

Traveled from Newcastle to visit this great restaurant after some friends recommended it. Totally worth it. The food was fantastic along with the service and the atmosphere. Lamb sank is one the signature dishes and is a must try!

We were made so welcome when we arrived. The staff were so friendly and nothing was a bother. We were attending a production at Sunderland Empire so we chose from the Pre-Theatre menu which offers two courses at a very reasonable price. The restaurant has a very homely feel to it. We look forward to coming back again soon when next visiting the city x.

Went for tea straight after work, my partner had mentioned the happy hr menu, so give it a go, it was little cold in place but to be fair I don’t blame them for not putting the heating on with the prices at the minute. Few ppl still had coats on, disappointed with what I had especially the bruschetta, and the main menu the chips were dry and my breaded chicken was dripping with grease when I lifted it up, the staff were so friendly and welcoming so I’ll be giving this one another try maybe the normal menu next , such a beautiful setting inside

I would like to say thank you to all the staff , they were warm welcoming and very accommodating. We had booked a very large party , food and service lived up to our expectations and much more. After our meal we moved to the lounge area we stayed and had coffee and drinks in comfort and excellent service. Thank you for making our night special.

Ideal for our needs at this time. Lunch menu reasonable but we would have preferred 2 courses consisting of main plus pudding (no puddings apparently). Service excellent. Waitress was exceptional.

I have eaten at this restaurant twice in the last week. Once with a friend and once with my seven year old granddaughter. Staff and service fantastic on both visits. Quality of food excellent on both occasions. I had the scallop ravioli on the first visit and I have to say it was one of the best meals I have eaten, just perfect. Second visit was lasagne. I have eaten this dish in many restaurants but this was superb. Thank you.

This is one of the best Italian restaurants I have been to. Fredrico & Christina are very most welcoming as is their staff. They are all very passionate about their food menu, wines, everything is Italian, all made fresh, some food locally sourced , but majority is from Italy and prepared fresh in restaurant. Wines list is sourced from selected vineyards in Italy, their desserts are on another level. Will definitely be visiting again.

I actually won a meal for 2 during restaurant week and Angelos was an easy choice. Heard good reports about the food and was on our list of places to try. Staff were very welcoming and loved the decor. We had choices from a set menu which had really good options. We both opted for mussels for starters and they were delicious! Not too much sauce and perfectly cooked. Mains was even better! Devoured the special pasta with homemade sausage and turnip tops ( didn't even know you could eat them). Far too full for a dessert. Wine was reasonably priced and was well chilled. Will definitely be returning soon and highly recommend.

The best brunch we have done, went for an early Mother’s Day, the staff were so lovely and couldn’t do enough for us, the food was amazing and the place had a fab vibe! Sure to come back as value for money was amazing x

My favourite restaurant not only for the fantastic food and wine but particularly the service, of which I’ve never experienced anywhere else to such a standard. Giving it 5 stars is not enough. They made my son the most spectacular birthday cake in extremely short notice (which I can only describe as chocolate heaven covered in clouds!) and, on the night before lockdown Eve, made me my most favourite dish which wasn’t on the menu. Initially they couldn’t source it fresh so one of the servers rang around several fish mongers to get it for me. The thought and kindness they have shown to us on every occasion is stellar, even importing wines they think we’d enjoy. I cannot rate this place enough. Even their lockdown takeaway menu is outstanding and beautifully presented.

We visited the restaurant with my terminally ill brother as he has spent months in hospital. The food was to the amazing standard it always is and we were impressed. A waitress then approached my brother and asked how long it had been since his operation and proceeded to ask him several questions. We did not say anything at the time as my brother is quite sensitive to people pointing out he has half of his skull missing. As a family we tried to brush it off as no big deal with him. On the way home he broke down and said he would rather avoid going out in future if this is what people are going to focus on. As a family we are heart broken as it has taken so long to convince him to leave the house and join us. We do not want to get the waitress into trouble but in future be mindful of people's feelings. We will think twice about booking here in future and is a shame because it was our favourite family restaurant. We give 5* for food and 1* for service.

It was raining heavily as we arrived but my husband and I were greeted by a member of staff and shown to a seat in the bar to settle and dry off before being shown to our table. Sofia our waitress was attentive without being invasiveThe food was excellent the menu was varied. We were allowed to eat at our own pace without being rushed even though I knew the table would be needed later. We were eating from 6.30pm. I can't praise the food highly enough and will certainly be eating there again.

Angelo's has everything one would wish to find within an Italian restaurant and more. From the minute I walk in I am always greeted with a warm Italian welcome. The food, the wines,the music... it is clear a lot of time and effort has gone into making Angelo's what it is today. Every member of this family run business takes pride in what they do and it shows. A special mention must be made to Guilia, one of the daughters and many lovely waitresses at Angelo's. She not only makes the best cocktails and the best recommendations, she also always finds the time to help me pronounce the dishes on the menu so i can sound like a true Italian! The recent refurbishment has also been a tremendous success and is now a great place to grab a quick bite (either tapas or a quick salad box) whilst on a lunch break.I can say with some certainty that Angelo's has served me some of the best Italian food. There is always a very varied menu and whatever you choose you will not be disappointed. So if you're looking for an amazing atmosphere, with brilliant staff and traditional wholesome Italian food then Angelo's is the place to be!

It is surely the best Italian restaurant in Sunderland!!! The food was fantastic:the pasta was excellent and the seconds were outstanding. The owner Federico was very professional and looked out on us loadssss. Overall it was a perfect experience and would love to come back.

I've been a number of times to Angelo's and it has always delivered in terms of quality food, service and ambience. Truthfully I should have reviewed before now, but felt duty bound to considering the success of our staff Christmas meal at the restaurant the Friday before Christmas. We were 20 strong as a group, but the friendliness and great organisation made for a lovely enjoyable evening. The Christmas Fayre menu was varied, imaginative and actually decent value for the quality provided (£22.95 for 3 courses). After opening drinks we were shown to our table. All courses were delivered at a nice pace in a friendly, organised and patient manner, the lively atmosphere adding to the enjoyment of the meal. Appreciation of the food served was unanimous and we were delighted we chose to eat here.Special mention to the 2 girls (owners daughters?) who served us, they helped everything move along with professionalism and humour, well done!

One of party of eleven to celebrate granddaughter's engagement, we were initially seated in an outer room where drinks were served prior to being seated in the main restaurant. After studying the extensive menu, I ordered Tagliatelle alla Carbonara, made with pancetta, egg and parmesan cheese, described as being 'Carbonara the real way'. It was really delicious.

Me and my husband went here on a night out and we were not let down. The food was so good we had belly pork and it was the best belly pork we've ever had. The wine choice was good to. Staff very nice. The decor is nice to very clean very cosy. We will definitely eat here again

Visited for their happy hour meal. I really enjoyed the food. I didn’t have to wait long. I asked for pasta but with tagliatelle which wasn’t on the menu and they were only too happy to oblige.

Situated in what I think was an old bank building Angelo's is comfortable with a pleasant ambiance and good staff. The ceilings are fairly high which give a spacious feeling.

We've been customers of Angelo's for many years now. So when we planned our wedding, this was naturally the choice of our reception venue. Fred, Nello and the staff at Angelo's made sure everything was perfect from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. The appetizers and food was incredible. Clean plates all around and everyone complimented how beautiful the meals were. Such amazing quality ingredients. Plentiful dishes. A desert to die for... Angelo's provide amazing value for money, whether it's a romantic night out or a family lunch (which I must add, our 1yr old loves eating here!). We cannot recommend this place enough. Super friendly staff. It feels like visiting family each time we go.

Visited early on Saturday night, without booking, and found the restaurant so full that I had my doubts about having a table. However the staff are so fantastic that we were asked to have a drink at the bar and a that we would be seated as soon as possible. We had a cocktail and my husband was offered oysters, he did say that these were the best he had ever had. As we finished our drinks a table had become available. So pleased we waited as our food was delicious !!! We both had sea food. It tasted absolutely Devine and so perfectly presented. The new decor is stunning, this is such a great place for families or couples wanting either a meal or there is now a tapas menu . We will certainly be making future visits here, one of the best restaurants in the North East both for food and for being looked after by Italian staff that treat you like family. Perfecto!!!!

Staff here are so knowledgeable about the menu they offer and the wine to best accompany. Always accommodating (made amazing homemade breadsticks for our teething son) and extremely friendly. Relaxed yet sophisticated decor and atmosphere showcasing truly exceptional food. Literally our favourite place to eat as a couple and as a family. I couldn’t recommend this place more!

Having left Sunderland in 1992 and spending 20 years in London , travelling the world I did fear the worst when it came to authentic Italian food in my home town. How wrong I was. The squid was the best I’d had outside the Mediterranean and the service was impeccable. I went three days running it was so good.

Wanted to book a table for five however GF PIZZA not available even though GF pizza bases are easy enough to make. GF pasta was on offer but decided to eat elsewhere where my dietary need could be catered for. Disappointed.

Had very tastly seabass with safood ravioli and my wife had half a lobster which she was very happy with. Friendly Italian waiters. Probably the best Italian in Sunderland, the one in Rainton is excellent also.

Visited Angelos on a rainy Friday evening. We opted for the tasting menu at £35 per head (needs to be booked 24 hours in advance) after being sent the menu via Facebook. The food and service were fantastic and we wouldn’t hesitate to return. Special thanks to Fran and Rob for looking after us.

We came after our friends got married. The service was fantastic and very Italian authentic. Robert the waiter was unreal and very knowledgeable and the chef who is also Italian was outstanding. They created a great atmosphere and we can't thank them enough. Authentic Italy in Sunderland with great lunch specials! Give it a go.

Visited Angelos and what a wonderful restaurant this is , so relaxed and friendly. We sat in the lounge , having a drink that was perfectly manicured, whilst we made our choice from the menus. What an excellent choice, from early menu to a la carte and also the “ specials” which was made with the finest ingredients that was available that day. My mother chose the chicken, which she declared was excellent, but a little too much for an 85 year old !!! Myself and my husband chose the cod, which was just perfect. The wine, which had been recommended by the waited, was superb with the food. We passed on desert but we will save that for next time, we will certainly be returning. A perfect meal in an outstanding restaurant was had by all.

I went with my friends, we had bottle of wine, one pint, one antipasto to share, 3 pastas and the bill came £80, the food was awful and I wasn’t to happy about that.

We came here before the cinema for a change to the usual nandos etc - lovely lovely meal. The service was excellent and very prompt and the staff were very friendly.We didn't wait long for food at all - very quick. A good selection of drinks too. We each had the goats cheese & garlic mushroom starter which were delicious followed by two pasta dishes which were lovely too - Happy hour prices are very good value & we will definitely return again price!!! 5 Stars!

On previous, infrequent visits we have been very pleased with the food. On this occasion the starters were all right (you can't get a grilled goat's cheese wrong) but my main from the Early bird menu was not good. The sauce was tasteless passata which was just as it came from the carton with a handful of baby plum tomatoes and two small fillets of sea bass. The fish was rolled so scales had been transferred to the flesh. The waiters asked, after each course, if the food was ok. My response to my main was a mild "I've had better" This was was met with a sneer and a shrug of the shoulders from our waiter. He didn't venture to our table again. I wasn't expecting a fulsome apology but a display of regret and a query as to what what was wrong would have satisfied me. Perhaps the owners have changed because this attitude which will not encourage diners was not the norm on previous visits. We won't be back.

We came here on Saturday evening for a meal. We enjoyed a drink in the bar area while we looked through the menus and the waiter explained what the specials were that evening. Service was excellent as was the food and also the wine. the restaurant has a lovely ambience and we all thoroughly enjoyed our evening. We will definitely be back again..

Fantastic food served by lovely Italian. Staff who really want to please. Chef Nello will always make alterations to any dish. I don’t eat cheese but can always eat any dish on the menu . Live the new specials and also the early evening menu. Finest Italian in Sunderland.

First of all, excellent service and very friendly people ready to fulfil any of your needs. Very good quality in food, me and my boyfriend were fully satisfied. A really warm atmosphere would definitely go again!

We visited Angelo's with my partner after a recommendation from a friend. We were delighted that the moment we entered the restaurant the staff aknowledged us instanlty and offered us a seat to the bar area which by the way gives you the sensation of being actually to a nice cosy bar in Italy. The music is nice and soft, of course italian songs are playing on the back which makes the atmosphere even better!

Decent service but food was tasteless and bland, no seasoning and lack of depth made this visit so disappointing

We ordered the Anit-pasta as a group of four and was not disappointed. There was a great variety of meat, cheese and olives and it was a pleasure to eat. The mains were also get tasty but after such a large starter they were a bit of a challenge. The place itself was very pleasent and the only issue we really had was the service was a bit slow for my liking but it was still an enjoyable evening. Not many places like this in Sunderland so give it a go.

Me and my girlfriend visited for a quick meal before heading home. We both went for a pasta dish. The seafood pasta and the homemade sausage pasta, the food was decent and the staff were friendly but I think it is a little over priced. All in all we had 2 beers, a glass of house white and 2 pasta dishes and it came to £40.

I come to Sunderland from the sticks, 30 miles away, and usually end up here, or a Turkish.

This is the third time we have been to Angelo's so we have given it the benifit of doubt, but we won't be going back. The first time it was good, the second wasn't so good and this time we definitely won't be going back!

Let's start with the food, which was excellent. A nice crispy arancino to start with with a pleasingly tangy tomato sauce, followed by beautifully tender pistachio-crusted lamb with aubergine ravioli. I'm not convinced that the cheese sauce or roast potatoes added anything, but they didn't detract from it either. The sea-bass with chorizo was reportedly excellent as well. One minor thought is there might be more choice for non-meat eaters.

I came here with my girlfriend on NYE for dinner before we went into town for drinks. I can honestly say the Lamb from the A la carte NYE menu was one of the best things I had eaten of the year, all of our food was delicious and the service was great as well. I will definitely be visiting Angelos again in the future.
