Anatolia Ocakbasi in Hackney

Really mediocre. Empty at 10.30 on a Friday night. Poor quality food, measley portions. I’ve been far, far too spoilt by Green Lanes. Odd that there isn’t a good Turkish restaurant on Mate Street.

We were a group of 6 at lunchtime today. The waiter took drinks & food order together without writing anything down. He made a mistake with a drink but quickly put that right. When the food came out he’d also made a mistake with my friend’s meal. He argued about it saying why can’t she just have this, anything else will take time to come. She obviously wanted what she ordered & asked to see the manager. The manager was SO rude & unpleasant, said everything was being videoed so he could see she didn’t order what she said (??!!). She had to compromise & have another dish which wouldn’t take so long… I was shocked. I’ve been going to Anatolia for over 20 years, always had good food & service. Things have definitely changed - portions are smaller but more expensive & now this. I won’t be going back or recommending it again. Incidentally our waiter said they were all from Uzbekistan, not Turkey.

Love this place - visited for a quick bite to eat with my partner on sat 4th march while catching up with my old hackney jobcentre crew. The food was as good as its always been - my last visit was over 5 years ago (I first came here in the 90's until I left the area in 2009) - very pleased to say the restaurant is still excellent quality & great value - fresh & tasty with great service, missed you guys and will definitely be back whenever I visit hackney again (hopefully not more than 5 years this time) :)

Had lunch here for two people and the food was very mundane -- the lamb special was taken from a pot of stew simmering at the front and was oily and quite tasteless. The warm meze plate was huge and more than enough for two people -- items were OK but nothing special. Without drinks the two dishes came to £22 and the waiter leaned on us to add a tip, strongly pointing out "service not included". Downstairs on the way to the loo was very run down and dirty, and there was no way to dry my hands after using the toilet. I won't be going back as there are lots of much better places in Dalston.

Hadn’t eaten here for about 18 months or so, it was early and not too busy, obviously the prices have increased in line with everything else, no problem but the food was just ok and average and not as good as I remember. If I lived in Hackney I’d still probably use it for quick snacks or a kebab or a wrap or Turkish pizza as menu is comprehensive and as the evening went on there were more people seemingly enjoying the food and different dishes. Lamb Shish dry and quite tough and doner portion small. This restaurant is one of many that are similar all over north London where the doner is actually more shawarma, not many Turkish restaurants do proper lamb Doner anymore unfortunately. Service pleasant. What I do not like though are the cooks constantly on their mobile phones at every opportunity, a common trait in most places these days and surely it has to be a health hazard when touching them and then to food?

Attended last week exactly to order a Lamb special at £8.50. Was lovely, no complaints. Re attended today to get x2 Lamb Specials which cos me £10.00 each - I did'nt say anything at the time. When I got back home from walking to and from the restaurant, the restaurant had forgotten a portion of rice and couscous. My partner rang the store to explain and they kindly asked if we could go back to pick up the missing items. No problem. When my partner went in to collect, the men behind the counter had no form of good communication and was trying to give him a completely different order and charge him a further £10!!!!! My partner was trying to explain for ages that he was the man who rang to say about the missing orders and was still not getting through to the men behind the counter what he was trying to explain. I got out of my car and went in to the restaurant, the men was still trying to argue the fact over the order that had nothing to do with us. 10 minutes later we finally got through to them and they gave us our rice. After this hiccup, i then enquired about the extra £1.50 charge on each dish, to which a man who was sitting at the table and chairs stood up and tried to explain to me that they had put their prices up 2-3 weeks ago.( Fair enough if this was the case) but I only went in exactly 7 days ago from today so him stating their price change in that time frame was a lie! Safe to say I wont be eating out of there again as they get so argumentative and defensive over a mistake on their end to which we had to re attend to rectify the problem anyway!!!!!

I visit this restaurant on a daily basis they know what i eat etc when i go in they say usual i say yes that kinda understanding. However they came with the bill today wanting to charge me £9 extra than normal. When i questioned it and asked for the manager i was told no mamager wants to speak to me and told by the man in the picture below to fxxk off and never come back this is disgusting behaviour. Very disappointed. And shocked i left after paying £9 extra and being spoke to like that.

Remember I came here ages ago and they had the best food ever! PROPER TURKISH!!! I really enjoyed it grab their mix grill and tuck in! Best turkish is here in east, and the best indian is City Spice in the east. If your local that's all you need to know.

Ordered via Uber Eat some food from this restaurant. Waited 40 minutes as food didn’t arrive we phoned to the restaurant where the manager told us it’s not his problem food didn’t arrive and should call Uber and then hang the phone to my face. Food never arrived shame on you and you lost customers were frequently getting food from you.

Arwful service. Attempted to order a shish,I was told that they had 8 minute's until closure and a shish would take to long. Therefore I ordered a lamb donor. A posh white couple came in an ordered a shish about five minutes after me and got what they wanted. The bald server was not listening to my order as he was rushing, failed to give me the salad I wanted. After this he had the audacity to tell me they were closing and that I couldn't eat my food but I was waiting for a friend's order. The bald man is rude and un helpful, clearly wanted to go home. Which is understandable after a long shift, but it shouldn't mean I should be served with sloppy food and an unfair attitude. In a nut shell I didn't get anything i wanted.

Eat here after being recommended by a local, always the best way. Food was delicious, the lamb shish was cooked pefectly. Staff were pleasant and friendly with good service. Recommend and would eat there again.

I went to the restaurant, sat down on the table, ordered a beer first, I was about to order my food as usual ( mix kebabs), Ismael came he said : move this tables and chairs, there are a lot of tables and chairs, I said sorry brother, I have Medical conditions spinal problems I cannot do it sorry brother. He got mad at me when I refused to move the big dinning tables and chairs for him, he shouted at me, insulted me, I said it’s your job to do it , not my business... he was continuously shouting at me and insulting me ,, he attacked me physically, the black stron security man from the pub next door run and pushed his chest away , he was looking for a fight, he was super rude, violent, dangerous, mad man , he said don’t come back here again. I told his boss ( Ali ) he said I told them many times, they don’t listen!! Ismael the water in Anatolia restaurant should be arrested by Police for provoking me . I lived in Mare street for 20 years I never had a terrible experience like that before. Terrible staff , they don’t understand English.

Eat out to help out meant Anatolia was busy tonight. It’s our grandson’s favourite place, and I love it too. Tonight I was offered an absolutely filthy beer glass - in a pandemic! - and we waited over 40 mins to be served and then one of the meals was not what we had asked for. 20 mins later, after an hour, the child finally got fed. The basic high turnover dishes remain really delicious but the vegetable dishes are frequently a bit fizzy and my daughter’s delivery lahmacun a couple of weeks ago was distinctly mouldy. Grandson and I will go back, but badly kept food and very bad service mean the rest of the fam won’t be with us. It’s a shame.

I come here often as live locally. Never disappoints but yesterday was so good I promised myself I would write a review. We had a mixed grill for 2 and hummus to start. Everything was cooked to perfection. To top it off the Guiness was cold and well kept. Looking at the previous reviews from over a year ago, i can only assume they worked on some of this as never had an unfriendly waiter and the food has never been average. There are definitely fancier restaurants but if your looking for something bourgeoisie then go elsewhere as you can tell from the outside this place is more humble. If you want value for money, friendly staff and great food then come here.

I go here couple of times a year maybe 12 times a year and I have been going now for about 8 years and can honestly say I have never been treated bad service is with a smile and the food is so excellent. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone I ever met even if they had a lot of money this restaurant pleases everyone. Food is fresh, tasty, bursting with flavour and better still a mix kebab with everything included is £15. Would highly recommend making this place a regular.

Honestly best Turkish food I’ve ever had 🤩 I would definitely recommend this way mor then tad in tad the food was bland and even the presentation wasn’t good

Me encanta la comida turca y mi primera visita fue genial y la comida muy buena.Mi segunda visita no es tan buena! ! Esperamos 15 minutos antes de que alguien se molestara en hablar con nosotros y tuve que ir a buscar un menú yo mismo, ya que uno de los dos camareros estaba teniendo una conversación completa con otra mesa. Cuando el camarero se acercó, fue grosero. La comida no era tan buena como la primera visita. El arroz sabía viejo y viejo, la carne era grasosa y masticable. The food was poor, bland and not fresh. Houmus was so old it had set on the plate. The waiting staff were so rude I wish we had left before the food came. We were treated like idiots. Avoid

Went here on the off chance but really good fresh food . Waiters attentive food fresh all served with salad and rice. Would recommend for what I would say is authentic food

This restaurant is not a true representation of Turkish cuisine.. Lamb doner was full of fat and chewy. Didnt finish half of the plate. Not a great service either really. Will definitely never visit there again.. Such a shame

Un turco sin tonterías con todos los favoritos habituales. El servicio es bueno y los precios son razonables. A menudo recibimos el gran pollo shish con arroz, ensalada y pan plano. También hemos comido en muchas ocasiones con un buen servicio y comida. La ensalada es hermosa. Muy recomendable

Tres de nosotros comemos aquí la otra noche. Compartimos el mese mezclado entre nosotros y tuvimos un main cada uno. La comida era comida tradicional turca, bien preparada y bien presentada. Tuve el gran kebab de pollo que tardó en terminar. Sin duda volvería a comer aquí cuando esté en Londres.

La comida está bien, es barata y alegre, como otros han dicho, pero mi miembro del personal de gosh one en particular nos hablaba cuando estábamos esperando ¡ORDENANDO! fue muy grosero, lo cual es una lástima, ya que deja que los demás se bajen del resto del personal, dijo que siempre es así, pero no volveré, lo que es triste, ya que he venido aquí hace más de 7 años, lo que le pasó a Ali puede ' Ya soy el dueño, ya que estoy seguro de que no lo dejaría así. Hemos estado comiendo aquí durante años comida increíble. Recomiendo encarecidamente el pollo shish con yogur viene con arroz y la más sabrosa ensalada fresca y pan turco.

I absolutely love Anatolia to sit in and take away. Recommend their chicken shish and falafel wraps or the sea bass if you're sitting in.

Really enjoyed lunch here today. Lovely food and great service. We had lamb ribs and hot mixed meze which were both brilliant. Really was reasonably priced too. I've been here with children too and is very child friendly.

I really like this place. Their lam is so good. The service is polite and prices are reasonable. I usually go there on Mondays before the movie session on Hackney Empire Cinema. It is great start for the week.

Never disappointed. Food is really nice, plentiful, good quality and well seasoned. Good choice on the menu with traditional options. Great value for money :)

Visitar celebración de Año Nuevo por hackney , la víspera en amigos. Decidimos cenar temprano. Estamos rápidamente sentados. Buen servicio. No te apresuran. Me encantó el hummus con pan. Cordero kofte era delicioso y no viene con arroz: 'si lo que quieres es entretenerte y ensalada. Un montón de comida. Estaban ocupados con un montón llevar órdenes. Volvería.

I really like the restaurant. Service wasn't the best. Atmosphere was ok. The food was nice that it tasted really homemade like if you were in Turkey but they added a lot of curry or cummin to everything. That make the food tastes strong. The...

Stopped there for a quick doner kebab after a night out and was very pleased. I can't say anything about the restaurant or the service as it was a take-away meal, but I certainly enjoyed a juicy and tasty kebab so I do recommend it.

This is my 1st time in Anatolia. I am not a big fan of lamb because I don't like the smell but my uncle recommended me to try it in Antolia so I did it. The meat was so tasty, no smell at all, I finished my portion in just 15 minutes and still hungry for more. The only minus point is the grill chicken which was not at the same level with the lamb.Best choice if you like Turkish cuisine and of course lamb.

Another great hidden gem of Hackney that has slowly succumbed to commercial pressure; doubled in size and the food quality has unfortunately dismissed proportionally. Service can be fickle...the waiters are great, the waitresses are miserable and arrogant, not sure what that's all about...The cooking is still done on an one grill but the quality of the meat and overall dishes has definitely been getting worse over the past couple of years. We now go to smaller and less well known Grill joints hidden away in less trendy areas of Hackney where the service and portions show they appreciate your custom, not just your money.

I came here with 4 members of my family and we we were seated very quickly. The staff were very friendly throughout. You get the bread to start with the dips so you may want to hold off of starters if your not too hungry. The Bread is very good. All the dishes come with a side of Salad and it is a very generous helping. I agree about the rice, you get very little. The rice is very tasty and the portion size could be increased in comparison with the rest of the dish. The staff are always friendly and I have never had any issues with them. On my last visit the waiter and chef came running out the shop after me as I had dropped £10 under the table. This is a very honest shop and you get what you pay for.

We went for a bite to eat. The doner comes with rice which we felt they hadn't given enough off. We asked if we could have a small plate of rice. Upon requesting this to the waiter we could hear the chef muttering something in his own language and rice was mentioned. The waiter came back and said you would have to pay £2.50 extra. We decided not to go ahead with it. Afterwards my husband asked to speak to the manager they said he wasn't in. My husband said he wasn't happy with the service as we only requested a small plate of rice which they should have honoured as there wasn't enough in the first place. At this stage the same chef started muttering again in his own language and shouted this is a business not a charity! At this point my husband said what do you mean? We're not having a free meal. He came out of the cooking area and put his face close to my husbands face. My little 3 year old daughter started getting distraught and said stop shouting! Customers had to intervene. Then I heard the waiter and chef saying they're only complaining as they don't want to pay for the meal. The chef said just shut up pay and get out. The whole time my husband was taking to the waiter. The chef was shouting in the background he was uncontrollable. At this point I left the premises with my daughter and my husband stayed to pay. Never again will we be coming here there are plenty of lovely Turkish restaurants around London. This restaurant is run by gangsters and thugs. Avoid at all costs.

We choose this because it was handy following drinks elsewhere. Initially we thought we'd made a mistake as you enter through the takeaway kebab part of the business, but we were quickly seated in the restaurant proper and whilst not high end it was perfectly pleasant. Good service throughout and very good Turkish food, and drink, at reasonable prices. The only note of caution is not to have a starter beforehand if you're having the mixed grill for two, as we did. In fact probably best not to have anything for lunch before either, as you get a mountain of grilled meats on a bed of rice with two fresh salads. It did look like others where overwhelmed as well as other diners seemed to be getting doggy bags to take their left overs home, probably to feed them for the next two daysI don't want to make it seem that price, and "plenty of packing" (as they say in Belfast) should be the only criteria for rating this highly but it was good food at reasonable prices and that isn't something that we always found in London

Stopped by for quick dinner and was neither impressed nor dissatisfied. The food was pretty standard across similar restaurants, albeit with none of the usual complimentary welcome food - bread, dips etc. The service was pretty unfriendly so I wouldn't recommend this considering the above.

This place used to be a real favourite of ours but its not anymore and the service is unfriendly and the food is just OK. Shame as we used to love it here.

Twice visited for takeaways and twice a real disappointment.On entering what you see does offer promise. Things look clean, the meat looks good, and the guys working the grill are always quick to take your order. Alas, the let down (for me) was in the quality of the döner meat served. The lamb on both visits was stringy and tough, and on the 2nd visit the chicken was just unpalatable - very oily and bland through lack of seasoning. However, the Cacik, (cucumber/yogurt salad), was really very good indeed, but not good enough to save the day, or prevent me giving such a low food rating; the meat is supposed to be the star of the show after all.Maybe their shish or kofte offerings fair better(?) and a Time Out review rates their mixed kebab, which is why I tried them out in the first place. I won't be going back again to check though.

So I went here, good food, but the menu stated "Italian Pizza" on the menu. Instant -30 points in terms of Turkish credibility. Bumbaclart.

I have never seen so many unexceptably negative combinations in one restaurant...Grilled meat was completely spoiled. I ve noticed that grill chefs behind an open plan counter, cross contaminating the food by chopping raw meat on the same chopping board as vegetables for salads.Upon my complaint waiting staff discorteously asked me to pay for the spoiled food that I havent even touched yet.I left the place with a very bad feeling. I would be complaining them to Food Hygiene Authority.Please be careful while you chose this place.

The food is quite good and the restaurant is clean, however service is not very fast. The prices are not low, but you get plenty of food with the money you pay, big portions. We enjoyed in general and it was easy to find,

To be honest here I've always been let down by the service on the last 2 times I visited the first time they forgot our order entirely so we waited an hour to simply not get any food and it was dealt with really poorly by management. The last time we were forgotten about too and had to always go and find a waitress or go inside to pay or get attention. Food presentation, quality and portion size is not the best either especially when you compare it to their competitors. Would have to take some convincing to eat here again.

The food here is so delicious I frequent as much as I can. You can eat in or takeaway, the best part is it's so cheap, cooked on a coal fire in front of you, its good to watch and then taste the most delicious Anatolian food. The staff are really friendly and service is great. If your in Hackney go here theres a pub next door, with pool tables, a fire place a moorish garden and huge t.vs if your a football fan we don't go there for the t.v. You can order from the restaurant to the pub if you want but I prefer to sit and eat at the restaurant.

Diciamo che dopo 1 settimana a Londra continuo a vedere i soliti panini e tramezzini pronti ovunque e aime sono stato costretto molte volte ad acquistare queste pietanze per pranzo o cena. Tornando al ristorante, non si mangia male, le pietanze vengono cucinate nella brace, dalla mia esperienza non mi sento di consigliarlo anche perché i costi sono esagerati. Tutto sommato però ogni tanto ci si può venire. Prezzi troppo alti..

Huge portions and charcoal blessed meats on the menu... Huge selection of kebabs, meats and loads of veggie options... Try he falafel, is as good as the lamb chops... The charcoal meats are amazing on flavour and juicy tastes... Still maybe need to improve their sweet lists of desserts... But hey, I'll come back soon to delight my senses... Staff is just great looking after every single one...

We needed to find a restaurant in Hackney that could accommodate a group of nine, made up of carnivores, vegetarians and vegans. Anatolia Ocakbasi certainly produced a suitable menu for all. Most people went for the falafel and salad, but my husband had the vegetable shish and I had a vegetable pide. The portions were huge and everything was well presented and delicious. Despite seeing several comments on Tripadvisor that the service was rude, we had delightful and polite waiters and waitresses. We were too full for dessert, but the coffee was good and the whole meal was excellent value for money.

I patronised this restaurant with 4 of my colleagues recently where we proceeded to order our meals. We waited for a total of 40 minutes for our meals to arrive - which for the most part was severely charred. We received no apology for the wait. We ate our meals and were then brought our bill. We decided to pay cash with a £10 remainder to be paid by my card. The waitress mis-heard the amount and entered £7 on the handheld machine by mistake. Instead of just correcting the mistake she insisted that I had told her £7 and began what can only be described as a brutish rant at me to the point where she mumbled the word "Stupid" under her breath and refused to hand me the handheld machine for me to input my pin and slammed it on the table instead. In disbelief having collected my card and my receipt I left the premises along with my colleagues, not before informing the remaining staff that I would never ever return to this establishment again. I would advise you all to do the same. A rabid dog should be treated with more respect than was afforded to me and thus I recommend you take heed and stay well away.

Absolutely horrific way to speak to customers. We were told we could sit down then told the place was closed "but my boss let you in, Order now, we need to go home, so now." of course we left.

The food arrived quickly and portion sizes are very generous. The problem was that as we tucked into our meal we noticed an ant crawling on the wall. We then found two more crawling on the table and many many more on the floor. We called the waiter over and told him discreetly but he denied there was a problem until we showed him the ants crawling everywhere. The manager was "unavailable" to speak to. Wouldn't go back ever again!

Visited on a late afternoon. Plenty of free tables. An extensive menu was given to me to peruse. I opted for one of the special daily stews. I chose the lamb stew which was served in mildly spiced sauce with vegetables. It was accompanied by a plate of salad and wild rice along with a basket of warm flat bread. All for an amazing £5.50! The lamb was succulent and cooked to perfection. My latte was smooth and creamy from top to bottom. Staff were polite and friendly. The restaurant interior is modern and minimalist. A takeaway service is available. If a healthy, authentic, substantial Turkish meal is required at a low price, I cannot recommend a better restaurant.

Delicious! The chicken is cooked in front of you and is delicious in the wrap. Quick, tasty food and at very good value.

The lentils soup, which is definitely the best one in London, feels like it's been made by Turkish grandma..Everything is freshly made, very tasty and the prices are super reasonable.I usually take the Sea-bass... but the mezes are the real treat in this place.When you've got a group of hungry people - take them there. They'd love you so much! (:

Anatolia is both inexpensive and delicious! My husband and I live closeby and come here weekly. I can't get enough! The chicken doner is heavenly. They have a lamb dish with butter croutons and yogurt sauce that is maybe the best thing I've ever eaten but is so unhealthy I can't bare to order it :) They have daily chicken, lamb, and veggie specials that are £5 and tons of food! Great place, good service.

Very good food If you are hungry..!!! Restaurant is very beautiful full air conditioned and very nice food service also very nice atmosfera is little bite a tough rest is perfect i will prefer if anyone wants to come over here..!!

In this austerous times, We need more restaurants like this, no fancy stuff, just pure simple food that taste fresh and amazing. Some of the small starters are amazing, I always have the chicken livers and they are to die for, then after I treat myself to the large chicken shish (Cubes of chicken breast cooked on the Turkish grill and served with rice and a salad), simple and healthy. It's a pleasure to go to a place and have a meal for less than £10 pounds. Highly recommended.

everytime i am in London i have to go to Anatolia. Their food is delicious and they are very generous you get a lot of meat and salad as well.Not the nicest looking place but who cares when the food is good.

My BF and I have eaten in Anatolia several times over the last few years, and always found the food to be very nice. We took both of our mothers there recently, and they also thought the food was lovely. The staff are always very pleasant, and the service is very good.

The Anatolia is on Mare Street in Hackney and is across the road from the 55 bus stop.The food is cooked right in front of you and is Turkish cuisine so lots of kebabs and quite spicy food but my favourite is the cheapest thing on the menu at £5, it is the daily special which is either chicken, lamb or veg, it is a Turkish casserole and is delicious. They also serve Turkish beer and European varieties and fresh griddled fish. The portions are large and include really nice bread and salad.

When being served at the takeaway counter people are leaning over all of the food speaking and shouting over it all the customers waiting for a takeaway have got access to the food being served at the tables. It's just so unhygienic. Plus the man serving takeaway customers takes your money as well then handles the food everything is done with their hands. I was really shocked to see drunk people hanging and shouting over food that will be served at the table to the people sitting in the restaurant. I'm really surprised that there is no hair found in the food, where it's sitting on top of the counter where people are hanging, manly drunk, waiting on a takeaway
