Whilst staying nearby I googled a random pub lunch with the kids. The welcome by Craig was awesome, service perfect, interior interesting and immaculate and the food was just phenomenal. The kids food was home cooked and so cheap! Where I live I would have paid double the price for half the quality of smoked salmon fillet ciabatta. I just wish I lived closer!

Just back from a great weekend in the Scottish Borders. The Allanton Inn was a very welcoming and comfortable base for a couple of nights. The rooms were very clean & well furnished with a good supply of Towels / Scottish toiletries and Tea/Coffee. We really enjoyed the excellent breakfast selection and ate both nights in the restaurant - so many delicious freshly prepared local choices of food. The outside garden and pizza oven looked like a great spot for summer evenings. Highly recommended.

I was guiding a tour of Berwickshire and chose Allanton Inn for lunch for my guests. We were not disappointed. Great beer, lovely Aperol Spritz and a fantastic lunch. Most of us had the delicious sandwiches but one of the party went for the fish stew - a speciality. Brilliant. The staff were friendly and accommodating and the beer garden, overlooking a typically Berwickshire pastoral scene , has to be one of the best in Scotland. A real gem, and worth the effort to head to somewhere a little off the normal track.

We stayed five nights and ate in each night. William and Katrina the hosts run an impressive establishment. The staff are friendly and very professional, the food varied and excellent and the rooms well appointed. There is the bonus of a lovely beer garden looking out over the countryside with weather proof seating for the odd damp day. We would return again. Allanton is also a good touring base for the south-east of the Borders and into Northumberland.

As clinically covid-vulnerable people, we have been meaning to check out the Allanton Inn's beer garden for a while, so it being a toasty 9ºC today we phoned to ask if they would serve a light lunch outside in one of their pods and had a very welcoming and positive response, which was also very much in evidence when we arrived. We each had one of their 'Small Plates' with sides of chips, all of which was delicious. No problems with our masking and respectful distancing at all times. Highly recommended.

We are seeing friends, who live locally, and this is their favourite place for a meal, I can see why. The decor is very impressive and the welcome genuine. The guys who served us were friendly and attentive. The menu is not particularly varied but it is all locally relevant which helps to add to the experience coupled with the fact that it all tastes really good. The ox cheek was superb. Yes, I can understand the reason our friends return time and again.

We went there to spend money on drinks and would have eaten there too. We took our dog and were consigned to the garden, thankfully it was dry. On arrival, all we seemed to receive were dog rules and an initial unhelpful attitude when we asked to turn on the gas heater outside. Our understanding is that the dog policy is driven by a local dog's behaviour. We live in a farming county where pubs that are not dog friendly are shunned by local people.

Mixed experience. Overall great place as the food and service are first class. The downside for our visit was the restaurant area it very echoey. My father has trouble hearing. There was a loud customer on another table and therefore the dining experience was lessened because of this. Other customers did complain. We were offered a table in the bar and everything was sorted. If they can fix the acoustics of that area I’ll give them 5 stars.

So, we had booked one of Allentown’s pods for our evening meal some time ago, opting for a pod as we had our hound with us, the establishment having a no dogs policy. Fair enough. When we arrived in the pouring rain, the manager told us in no uncertain terms that due to the rain her staff would not be serving food in the pods and that our dog would have to stay in the car as the dog going inside “would upset the locals”. We said this was not an option. The way this was put across by the manager can only be described as hostile. We were told 5hat if the dog misbehaved we would be told (not asked) to leave. Had we not prepaid a deposit for the seafood platter, we would have turned around there and then. We were put on a perfectly acceptable table, served by a slightly over-compensating and embarrassed waitress and had a very tasty meal. One drink, no starters no dessert and a hasty exit followed as our evening had been spoiled. Absolutely shocking and shabby customer service. Purely because of this, I rate one trip adviser blob. If I could rate zero blobs I would. Dog owners beware and take heed of this tale. It was not our fault it was precipitating down; if there was a problem us having a dog then we should have been called beforehand. There was no respect for us as customers and we will never darken their door again. Finally, the food was great. But the manager left a very sour taste that we cannot shift.

This is in almost every way an excellent pub - both for accommodation and food. Friendly and helpful proprietors and staff. Very good location (as long as you have a car) for visiting nearby Berwick-upon-Tweed and the adjacent coastline - both sides of the border and including Lindisfarne (Holy Island) ( do check the tides and plan accordingly). Beds a little hard but room was otherwise also excellent. Food the first evening was superb and beautifully presented - would have got a 5+ review, especially the pork special. But the third night we were there (we ate out the 2nd night) the food was disappointing - poorly presented and not especially well prepared (even though one of us had the same special dish as before because it had been so wonderful). Can only assume there was a different chef?

If I could critic anything it would be the wine options all by the glass choices not to my taste, would of loved a glass of New Zealand sav blanc or a Chablis maybe! Such a great fish dish deserved it! Nicer by the bottle wines are available however couldn't warrant it for just the 2 of us when one has to drive. Anyway none the less nearly perfect!

The Allanton Inn is the best option for a decent meal in the area and from time to time, the food is absolutely fantastic. We visit only once a year but it has become a firm favourite for us and I really look forward to seeing what is on the specials board each time we visit. Seasonal produce dictates what one can expect to find but we have never been disappointed although I would tend to agree with some of the comments about the attentiveness of the front of house team although overall, they do a great job.The potted mackerel and mackerel ceviche starter and the rack of lamb were the stand out dishes for us during our visit in June 2017.Looking forward to returning next year!

Using locally sourced produced it was disappointing that they could only offer chips, mushrooms, half a tomato and two very large battered onion rings with a beautiful fillet of beef which was cooked as requested. Inside the pub was very pleasant, with very friendly staff, very good service and a good bar. The food overall was very good, there were a couple of issues in that the roast potatoes were hard on the outside and dry in the middle, the veg was cooked just right and the beef was beautiful however there was only one slice, not enough for a man. Went here for a b]family birthday. What can I say not only is the Inn just delightful inside and out but the food was just wonderful. Two of us shared the fish platter to start and it was just wonderful. If any of the platter was anything to go by then I'm back for any of the dishes on their own! I had the day's special, an Italian fish stew, it was beautiful, more substantial than a bouillabaisse and infinitely more flavoursome, helped by the quality of the seafood. This was reflected in my partner's cod, which was both subtle in flavour, fresh and moist. The service was its usual Borders best, relaxed, helpful and friendly. I have no hesitation in recommending the Inn to locals and visitors,

we should have been warned when we were the only folk for lunch in the pub's restaurant at 13.00 hours... My wife had a vegetarian option with long dead greens, her son a steak and I went for the simple fish and chips... this was last Thursday and my stomach is still upset. I suspect the fish was frozen, microwaved to thaw it then cooked... not the best way to do this. I was ill all that evening and my system has still not fully recovered tonight, Monday night. Staff were distant, the restaurant not warm and a workman was drilling and hammering in the bedroom above the seating area. A memorable meal for all the wrong reasons.

Would highly recommend the fish and chips! It was also lovely and quiet with a very relaxed, informal atmosphere. The waiting staff were attentive and exceptionally friendly. If we are nearby again we wouldn't hesitate in dropping in. Allanton is a lovely little village and the Allanton Inn is definitely worth a stop enroute if in the area.

This was the best lunch we had all week. It's a bit more expensive than your average pub but well worth it and beautifully cooked.I had pheasant stew and I wish I knew the recipe!

We visited with friends and had a marvellous stay. It might be bit off the beaten track but it is worthwhile making the effort to visit. Everything was first class from the room to the bar and to the food. The staff were friendly and helpful in everything they did. The service provided and the ambience would be hard to beat in many better known establishments. Go on book at least an overnight stay. We certainly intend to return.

This was the only Michelin recommended restaurant near Berwick, or so we could find. The food was really good quality, the setting was cosy and classy and the staff were very friendly and courteous. Really enjoyed the meal. We had a sharing platter to start, main each, shared a dessert and a bottle of wine and the whole thing came to only £68. Really good value. Would definitely recommend. Well done, great restaurant!!

First time back in the borders for a while and very glad to be going back to the Allanton. The warm surroundings just wrap you up and make you feel good. It's an extensive menu and also a few daily specials. To start I had pigeon breast with black pudding, just delicious. Three of us had haddock which was just superb, served with a spring onion mash. Cheese selection was good but I felt a touch pricey. The service was efficient and friendly. If it wasn't a 350 mile drive would go there again before Christmas, next year will have to do. Try it - highly recommended.

Unfortunately didn't get to stay at this hotel due to weather and a change in travel plans. However did have a mix up with booking.com and cancellation fees. The owner William was more than kind and understanding. He listened to my concern and helped me out. Would definately stay here in the future as William obviously carers about his customers and his reputation and his business. Highly recommended visiting an establishment who's owners care so much.

The staff are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The quality of the food is excellent and well priced. Having eaten here on a number of occasions I can assure you it will not disappoint. This is by far my favourite place to eat in the area. I have eaten here with a large group, as a couple and with family and friends including children - everyone was impressed by the quality each time. I have never had breakfast here but I would expect it would be excellent too! As for dining on a budget - it depends on your budget and I hate to pay over the odds for an average meal - for me the Allanton Inn's prices are just right and well worth it.

We visited while having a ride about and how glad we are to have found this little gem.The restaurant was empty and I am sure it was because it was early because the quality of food and service would warrant a waiting list.We shared a meat platter to start and the pork belly and black pudding was truly outstanding, we followed this with mussels and they were plump and juicy in a wonderful sauce. The service was discrete but attentive and it is certainly a venue we will frequent when in the area.

On the recommendation of locals we had our first meal at the Allanton. The food and wine were excellent, the Landlord was warmly welcoming, the two young waitresses were delightful but the Landlady was surly and unsmiling, creating an atmosphere in this small intimate restaurant that was most uncomfortable. Perhaps a costumer service training course? Sadly we will be reluctant to visit again.

Go here now before everyone else figures out what amazing value this place is! The drive through the Scottish countryside is stunning (a half-hour drive from the railway stop at Galashiels). The owners have created something special that I simultaneously want to keep to myself and share with the world. Oxana's hosting (and baking and wine-pairing) skills mean you are welcomed with friendly service, clear explanations of the wine pairings and amazing, sweet treats. We have been twice - once in September and once in November - and from beginning to end, our glasses were never empty, and we were treated to amazing service. Now, the food is really something to talk about. Bryn is doing something special here. The food is fresh and innovative while remaining down to earth and approachable. A simple parsnip soup sent our table to heaven with its perfect spice. We had pork belly with the crunchiest crackling and lentils with vegetables that were flavoured so beautifully I couldn't tell what was in them. Blue cheese with truffled honey had all of us begging for more. Every bite is a delight, and some of it was items I wouldn't normally order. This food, this place, is truly something special, reflecting our Borders community and some of the best food in Scotland. Go now!

Stopped in for some lunch today. Friendly service with a good and varied choice of menu. Offers half portions of meals if more suitable. Brilliant value. Hot and cold options available. Felt like the teapot was bottomless, think it was 3 cupfuls in total!

Wonderful food and so nicely presented and the young man serving was so polite and professional. Only negative was the disappointing vegetarian options for my sister. Macaroni cheese is more suited to a cafe menu. But a lovely evening none the less.

Got to say, I’ve never had a bad meal or experience in here. The ham hock and lentil soup as amazing, the steak and mushroom pie was outstanding. It was packed with lean steak in a lush, beefy broth type gravy. Great fies, a la dente peas and everything was piping hot and cooked to order. Even the plates were warm, which I always appreciate. The staff were great and the owner is a real friendly guy. If yer heading North or South on the A68, make sure this is yer pit stop, even for a coffee and cake. Made me smile today whilst I was eating, it was that good. It looks like a greasy spoon if you pass it on the road, but it’s not! It’s on a par with very good pub grub, and it’s really clean inside, as is the kitchen which I passed on the way to use the bathroom.
