This is what a typical Fish and Chips should be. Fresh, home made, good quality and great price. I will definitely recommend this place to everyone.

I’d read a lot of good reviews of this place so I suggested it for a post work meal venue. It’s about 840-9 pm so not desperately late...but we got rather tepid, leathery chips and my battered sausage had been cooked so long before it was like a truncheon. I think we were just unlucky - the chips were evidently the end of a previous batch and the fresh ones were doubtless not far away. The location is excellent and the decor is not too bad if you want to sit in. Also not too pricey. For a central london chippy I would have assumed a bit more...

Miles de personas pasan cada día por esta pequeña joya de pescado y papas fritas, como lo hice yo durante muchos años, hasta hace poco, cuando la Sra. y yo tenía un poco de resaca y necesitaba algunas fichas para aclarar nuestras cabezas. Me sorprendió descubrir que este lugar tiene algunas de las mejores patatas fritas que hemos comido. Luego regresamos la noche anterior para una cena romántica de pescado y papas fritas y pollo y papas fritas en la mesa en el pavimento. Solo tengo que decir que fue genial, el servicio atento, la comida simple pero excelente y sentarse en una mesa en el pavimento es algo a lo que no estamos acostumbrados, ¡pero fue muy divertido!

Old-style , unpretentious chipper, off the tourist beat and frequented by locals. You can get an enormous haddock and chips, fried fresh for you, for GBP 9.90, and savour it your own bottle of wine, no corkage charged. Bliss couldn't be more ful.

Had cod and potato chips with mushy pea side dish. The chips were soft but disappointment offset by huge helping of cod. Went well with the mayonnaise sauce provided. The mushroom chicken pie was good. Very reasonably priced lunch.

I have been going to Alen’s Fish and Chips for over a year now, always friendly service and delicious fish and chips every time. The fish and chips taste delicious and are always freshly cooked, the price of the fish and chips are great value and they give big portions. I have tried most of the other fish and chip shops in the city of London and in my opinion this is the best fish and chips shop by a mile, it is also one of the best I have been to in the UK! I am a fish and chips connoisseur and I recommend this for all your fish and chips needs! Forget the rest, go to Alen’s Fish and Chips .. .it’s the best!

I only got a battered sausage from here,it was awful, probably been sitting there for 3 hours! Batter was hard, sausage was dry, never going back

I wanted to experience fish and chips and Alen's didn't disappoint. I had haddock, my husband had cod. They were cooked to order and equally delicious. Everything prepared 'just right.' Service was great. Dining area is no-frills and basic. No matter... the food was yummy!

I've visited Alen's recently, although I have several fish and chip restaurants in my area adjacent to Alen's I thought I would give them a try. Unfortunately it was a big mistake, the chips were okay however the fish was terrible crusty batter, probably sitting there all day long, and the fish was the worst I've eaten, as well as this the mushy peas were watered down. I will never ever visit it again.

El único "inconveniente" es que están cerrados los domingos. Si quieres una buena relación calidad-precio con una gran experiencia de comer en la calle Theobalds, ve allí.

Alen es actualmente uno de los mejores en el centro de Londres - y reconozco que he probado la mayoría de ellos, aunque no perfecta como todos los chippies cada vez. Excelente pescado fresco maltratada y generosa porción de patatas cortadas a mano. Un clásico británico! Tenía llevar y toda mi familia disfrutamos mucho. Inusualmente para un chips Alen le lleva tarjetas contactless/pago. Totalmente recomendado.

Time flies, people change, 'things' change. I can't believe it's been three years since I last had the pleasure of eating at Alen's. The good thing, the very good thing is: nothing has changed. There's still a warm, relaxed atmosphere, still decent portions of perfectly cooked fish, chips and sundries. Most of all there's still friendly and happy service which makes this one a keeper. I hope its not another three years before I get back again...

The three of us came he one a wet and windy thursday night to escape from the loudness of the local pubs. The place doesn't look much from the outside, the inside is classic 1970's but is clean and welcoming - even has a TV if that's your bag. I had the standard cod chips and mushy peas. My mate Richard has the plaice. All of the fish was cooked too order, the portion of plaice so big it had a plate on its own.Surprisingly for a classic chippie you can get beer and wine. I had a halfway decent Merlot. Mushy peas, my area of expertise, had the correct mushiness do not enough (or no) sugar - mushy peas need sugar!..The service was very friendly - will come back again.

Having moved down from Scotland I struggled to find a decent fish and chip shop. Alen's is definitely the best I've found. I can't vouch for the fish as I normally have chicken nuggets. I love the chips and the curry sauce is amazing.

A la recherche d'un "fish and Chips" traditionnel pour un diner en famille, un rapide coup d'œil sur "Google" (nous n'étions pas loin) nous a dirigés vers cette adresse.Un lieu simple, sans fioriture, avec des portions généreuses pour un prix compétitif, surtout le midi !!!...De plus, un jeune homme très attentionné nous a conseillés sur les différents poissons et les "side dishes".Nous le conseillons donc tout particulièrement.

I visited at 5.30 pm on a Monday and there were five pieces of fish already cooked...the one I got must have been there since lunchtime as it had turned into had rubber under the warming light. I ate in, and had to leave half on the plate. On the plus side, the chips were good and plentiful, and the restaurant is clean and the staff were friendly.

I would have preferred 'good' to a choice of 'average' and 'very good'...if you are lucky to get the fish recently cooked, it is very good as the oil is clean and the ingredients fine. Sometimes, takeaway sadly means it has sat too long...better to eat there.

The cod fish was very reasonably priced and worth the extra distance I traveled to try it. It was crisp and tasty, not too greasy. I also tried the battered sausage which was not good....apparently, it had been sitting too long in the warming tray and was batter was not good.

I made my family walk across town for this fish and chips. Not only was I embarrassed because we took a $10 cab fare to get there but it cost me $48 USD for 3 plates of fish and chips and one beer.I think they make the fish in advance and throw it in the fryer again to heat it up. I didn't see them do that, but, I did see some fish under a heat lamp when we walked in. The coating was decent, as was the homemade tartar sauce. My fries looked like they had been sitting out for an hour cold,mushy, and greasy. My son ate my fish and I left all my fries on the plate. The service was good, staff was friendly, but I just thought that this was a hole in the wall with great food, it turned out to be just a hole in the wall.

If you feel like spending little on a delicious big fish with loads of fries and peas, that's absolutely the place. I recommend the lunch special. Service was great too.

Fish and chips is the thing to get here but they have some other options too. We really enjoyed our lunch here. It was a quiet Saturday afternoon and we'd just arrived in London. We had great service when we were there. It took no time at all to get our food. We were shocked by how massive the fish was! The fish was flaky and thick, not over fried or dry at all. Come hungry. But there's no way you'll finish everything. It's a ton of food. If you're not super hungry, you might actually be better off sharing a plate. Not much in terms of ambiance but come for a quick and cheap bite.

First time in London and so we tried fish & chips several times. Allen's was by far the best and the least expensive. It does not look like much from the outside but looks are deceiving. Go in and you will be happy you did. Fish was cooked upon order at 2:00 pm so it was not left over. Chips were crispy .

after reading the great reviews here had high hopes. the fish was soggy. my guess is it was about 5pm when we were there so we got the leftovers. to bad , but now you know when not to go. This used to be Very good but in fact it is the opposite now I had cod and chips very disappointed, waitress was good. Staff behind the counter did not seem to care about the food or the service.

We were working for 4 months in London and I wanted to have a traditional take away before we left. The office ordered this for lunch, and it was tasty, but the mushy peas were disappointing. The people I work with were satisfied saying the only way to really improve on it is to have fish and chips at the seaside, like Dover or on the ferry. I would have liked the chips crispier and more vinegar, but if we had eaten in then I guess I could have tailored it further.

I was so looking forward to eating here based on the reviews. Part of the problem was our timing. We came at around 3:00 so they served us fish that had already been cooked so it was not fresh. Surprised that they don't cook to order. The one good thing is the tartar sauce.

Alen’s is a local and family run fish & chip shop loved by Londoners and Tourists alike. Excellent fried fish & chips, mushy peas and customary accoutrements served in the heart of Holborn, it is the envy of the competition. Located at 43 Theobald’s Road on the Nos. 19, 38 and 55 London Bus Route ‘Red Lion Square’ stop, it’s a short 10 min hop from or to the West End. One of the best, a culinary bargain and I must confess a regular favourite of mine. Five stars !!!

Located near the British Museum .The nearest tube station is Holborn (Central & Piccadilly). It serves traditional fish & chips with the usual side dishes. Portions are generous and the service is very good. The place has tables for dining on site but also has take-out.

French fries good and the salad that we chose (instead of mushy peas) was quite fresh and good! Young man who waited on us very nice. Watched 10 thousand meter race while eating - British runner won!

This beats Whitby hands down. Being from up Nurth like. I was always a firm believer you couldn't ever beat Whitby Cod and Chips. But I'm pleased to say that I've found a dead cert winner. It is tucked away on High Hilborn. Blink and you'd miss it. Fortunately it is close to were I work. It is a traditional fish and chip shop. It has a bargain meal during the day and full price there after. You can sit in or take away. Which ever you fancy. The place was empty when we went. But don't let that put you off. The staff are really friendly and helpful. We had Cod and chips with mushy peas. Cod was lovely. Just the right batter and beautiful white cod. Chips were done to perfection and as a Northerner. Mushy peas just right. Portions are on the generous side and certainly fill you up. Homemade tartar sauce is lovely. Well worth the £9.95 for a fish and chip meal. Will definitely be visiting again.

I remember I might be the last guest on the day of August 3rd. I came here around 10:45 pm and they were still opened. Despite late time to clean the shop and to close almost, there were still freshly cooked fishes n chips. I took cod for takeaway. Taste of it in my hotel room was so so fabulous and yummy. It was perfect choice. I would recommend anyone this restaurant if visiting around Holborn. Just pity coz I couldn't come again here per my schedule in London.

My family was vacationing in London and staying near Holborn Tube station. On our last night we wanted a traditional fish & chips meal and we learned about two well-known ones very close by -- Alen's and Fryer's Delight. There were five of us total, so we went to each place, got take out, brought it back to our flat and compared.We thought both were very good. Alen's had large portions and the fish (we had cod) was fresh and crispy. The chips were a little soft to my liking, but not bad. Each piece of fish is around £5 and a large order of chips is £2 (and that is huge).The people behind the counter here at Alen's were a little friendlier and the interior was a bit nicer here, for people eating in. I would definitely recommend Alen's.

Very nice owners and excellent fish & chips at this little restaurant. We only had time for one visit on our four-day stay at Premier Inn Holborn just around the corner. Nice sauce created by the lady in the family, and the fish was of pure quality. Highly recommended well worth a visit!

Very good stuff for the price (under £10 dine-in Cod & Chips) - If I had to nitpick, the batter was slightly oily, and the entire place has a strong diner vibe (complete with oil smells). Staff was very eager and responsive.

Ce soir-là, restaurant d'apparence trop calme et quasi vide, ça permet de douter des avis que nous avions lus. En fait, il propose un menu de fish and chips très copieux, important, pas gras, très digeste et très bon : vraies frites, poisson frais, pas très cher. Il fait également ce plat et d'autres à emporter, il y a d'ailleurs eu quelques clients de passage durant notre repas. Nous recommandons ce restaurant.

I have lived in the area for years and have seen fish and chips shops come and go. But Alen's are 'proper' chip shop fish and chips. Lovely chips and the portions are generous! I have eaten in the restaurant and the fish and chips with mushy peas was delicious, but usually I get a take away. The service is always great, probably due to it being a family run establishment. they are so friendly, but most importantly the chips are delicious and fairly priced.

I had the best fish and chips I have eaten for a longtime here. The chips were hand cut and the haddock was so fresh it meted in my mouth. Excellent value too.

Looking round for a pub to have a meal when we saw Alen's and we were glad we did.Again,the service,food and price's were top marks,the fish was freshly cooked with the skin on,the chips and sloppy peas were also very good,we said to the server how we call 'mushy' peas in Yorkshire sloppy peas and that it was good that they had done the fish with the skin on.At £6.95 it was very good value for London.They also had an onion flavoured Non Brewed Condiment instead of vinegar which smelt and tasted of homemade pickled onions,grand.

We enjoyed fish & chips in various restaurants traveling through Cornwall and in the last couple weeks wandering through London (often in pubs for meals...), so when a local suggested we check Alen's F&S, I set off in earnest to try what was described as a place "where they do a proper job of fish n' chips" and I was not disappointed. Easy to find and only a short walk from Soho, we arrived in early afternoon and sat at one of dozen or so tables in the bright & open sky lighted restaurant (there was one table on the sidewalk too, but a little chilly for us that day). The fish batter was lovely - crisp and tasty, over fresh cod, the chips were thick-cut and the tartar sauce fresh made (they have gravy too in case you're tempted). Very nice indeed. The restaurant is nothing special (we came for the fish & chips!) but it is centrally located, clean with terrific/friendly service and the fish indeed are delicious!

Having moved to London from Liverpool recently, I was missing a real chippy tea and have found one at Alen's. It's well priced compared to the London average and the food is pretty good. I was slightly dubious after reading the somewhat over the top reviews on this place, but I was pleasantly surprised. The only downside was that the curry sauce was slightly watery for my tastes, but this could just be a personal thing.If you are northern or just like a good chippy meal, I would suggest trying this place.

If you find yourself in Theobald's Road and in need of some fish'n'chips, then Alen's is your bet. The restaurant staff are friendly, and the fish is better than the place down the road.

My family and I visited Alen's Fish & chips on our first day in London. It was our first experiance eating this dish and we all loved it. In our four days we did visit other places for the Fish & Chips but they did not compared to the ones in Alen's. Alen's Fish & chips was so good that we end it up going in our last night in London. On our second visit we did order the fish but also some other meat pies and they also were great. And the prices were the best too. I'm craving some Alen's Fish & Chips right now.

I think this is my first ever review, but of late I have felt compelled to support the small local business when deserved. I came across Alen's after having a bad meal at another of what was my regular for my weekly Fish n Chips (on the same road). The staff are so friendly, the service is fast, and the Fish n Chips are just the best I've ever had - Rick Stein take note!!!! The key word here is 'Fresh'.

I have been to this fish and chip cafe many times. The fish and chips are the best I have tasted anywhere; the service is always pleasant, cheerful and helpful. It is beautifully clean. An altogether enjoyable and pleasant experience. Prices VERY reasonable indeed. Amazingly good value for money. You would not call it posh, but for an enjoyable fish meal it cannot be bettered.

I used to eat at Fryers Delight and Rock & Sole Plaice when I worked in High Holborn. Fryers was better than Rock & Sole. I have also used Masters in Waterloo, Golden Fish up near Mount Pleasant, Golden Hind and the Seashell up by Marylebone station.Alens is now the best lunch option. Lunch special is very reasonably priced and the fish is beautiful it comes with salad or mushy peas. Tea comes with milk in a separate jug. It is not too busy and the service is very good.Place is nice and clean and pleasant.

In the heart of the city yet with the friendly atmosphere of a small town chipper, Allen's is well worth a visit if you're in the Holborn area. Plenty of room, great service, smiling face's (in London yet) excellent portions. Nothing to complain about.As I left they undercharged me, significantly, I questioned this and was told that 'the fish wasn't big enough'. As if I noticed. Will revisit again and again...

We only popped in to get some chips but it felt like a solid, local chippy. Hand cut chips and homemade pies suggest that they know what people want and they know how to deliver. It's nice to find a London chippy that understands that it has to cut potatoes themselves by hand in order to produce the kind of chips that people expect from a chippy!!
