Having been to the Ingleby Al Forno we decided to try this one out as it is closer to our home and Ingleby had left a good impression on us. Though the Ingleby Restaurant is great, there is nothing special about this one. The mood of the Staff in general seemed to be quite bored and uninterested, the food tastes like something I could easily make at home myself, the furnishings we were seated at didn't seem to have been cleaned very well before we sat down and our chairs were wonky. On top of all this the Bathroom was so small that I could barely close the door. So my recommendation is that if you are going to an Al Forno Restaurant just travel the extra 10 or so minutes to Ingleby Barwick. If you are just in Darlington and looking for a Restaurant you can do much better anywhere else on Skinnergate and there are even better Italian Restaurants on this Street too (There is even one immediately next door). Overall: a perfectly plain, boring and over-priced Restaurant. There is no reason to choose this location over any other on the same Street.

We went to Al Fornos for our 5th wedding anniversary and were hoping for something special. This restaurant did not disappoint. The food was delicious, the steak was so tender, and the wine was very nice too. The service was amazing. Leo who looked after us had clearly understood our dietary requirements and ensured they were catered for and made sure we had a lovely fairly private table with very comfortable seating for the occasion. The decor is beautifully traditional and the atmosphere when we went felt nice and intimate despite being quite a large restaurant. Fabulous place, we will definitely return.

Pizza so good that we forgave the 35 minute wait for it to arrive (e were conscius of time as we were going to the theatre) One of the fnest Calzones I've ever had- and offered with a choice of pomodoro or bolognese sauce, served with a small side salad. My wife had a chicked Kiev pizza which she very much enjoyed. She tends to leave the pizza crusts, but this time I was amazed that she asked for a box to take them away for later (and they were eaten- they were that good). Will definitely vsiit again when we next go to a show at Darlington Hippodrome, but will aim to arrive 15 minutes earlier.

First time I have visited this restaurant. I live in Bishop Auckland some 10 miles away. However decided to give it a try. My first impression was the decor is excellent. Pizzas 🍕 are lovely great selection of pasta dishes and salads. In general a comprehensive menu . I have to mention the staff who great you with a warm welcome , can I mention Kristen who served our table she is simply excellent. Nothing is a trouble to her. All things considered this is great Italian restaurant. Will definitely visit again.

We had not been for a while. Previous experience was mixed but ok. New visits x 3 have been exceptional. Food quality and service have been at the highest level. We will keep going back

The food came really quickly but was not that enjoyable and was very overpriced . The deserts came around 25 mins after we ordered them which was inconvenient and the deserts were cold and small. Overall bad experience .

We went for a bottomless brunch, which, on the website is advertised as a pizza each and drinks. We turned up to be told we hadn’t booked this, thankfully my friend had her email confirmation proving we had. They sat us down and said it would take them half an hour to set up and any drinks we had now would be outside of the time we were allowed for the brunch, to which we argued, if they have to make the food anyway, they may as well start the clock and serve us drinks. They came over with prosecco and within the half an hour food….which was not pizza, but an afternoon tea (with not a lot on it). When we mentioned this, all the staff seemed confused like we’d made it up. When it came to eating the scones we realised we’d been given cottage cheese rather than clotted cream! We asked them politely to change it, a waiter came back and advised that they didn’t have any as they had ordered the wrong thing! We asked for butter instead. When asked if everything was ok, we expressed that we weren’t entirely happy with everything and could we possibly have an extra 15-30 minutes for the inconvenience and having to wait, we were told no because they don’t usually serve bottles of prosecco which they’d been giving us, but we could have 3 shots. So we finished up paid and left. I’ve been here a few times and never been as disappointed as I was today

Very disappointed, we ordered the seafood risotto it was the worst I have ever had, very very spicy, we complained but they didn't care, also at exactly 10.00 we were kicked out, we thought the kitchen closed at 10 00 but when we booked the table for 4 people for 8.30 nothing was mentioned about having to actually leave the premises at exactly 10.00, staff weren't very friendly either, would not recommend this place at all.

This proved to be a disappointing night out. The food was no more than average but the customer service was appalling. When it came to ordering pudding, we were told that the kitchen had shut down even though it was only 9.10pm. The choice was restricted to what was in the fridge (cheesecake and tiramisu). When I enquired whether we could have coffees, I was informed that they turned the coffee machine off when the kitchen closed down! How can you close the kitchen down when customers who are paying good money have not finished their meal? It wasn’t as though we had overstayed our welcome. The restaurant should be run for the benefit of the customers and not the staff.

Booked for 30 people for our Silver Wedding celebration on New Years Eve. We were given the upstairs dining room to ourselves. Everyone’s food was delicious, arrived hot and was as preordered. The staff were excellent. Couldn’t recommend Al Fornos enough. 5 stars 🌟 from us. Thank you for a stress free occasion on one of the busiest days of the year

Went for a pre theatre meal, were warmly greeted and seated quickly. The food and service were first class and could not fault any part of the experience. Although the staff were young, they were very friendly and helpful and had obviously been well trained. The manager was attentive, friendly and helpful. Food excellent, we will be back. 5 stars.

We hadn't been here for a long time as were very disappointed last time we ate here. However, last night we were very pleased to see a busy restaurant and to report that the food was up to the standard we used to expect - well done Al Forno for restoring our faith in you. We'll be back

We booked on line and had planned to take a handicapped member of our family for an early meal. When we arrived at the restaurant there was a notice on the doors to say that it was closed for the day, sorry for the inconvenience. Well thanks for that! Any chance you could have come back to us to tell us you were shut? Miserable performance from people who don’t care about their customers. However it’s not all bad news. Firstly Al Forno doesn’t need to worry about us being customers ever again. Secondly, and more importantly, we went to the Indian restaurant opposite and it was excellent, the staff made us feel very welcome and nothing was too much trouble.

Arrived at the restaurant and they had our booking but not for afternoon tea. They still accommodated us, 3 altogether, and served a bottle of Prosecco while we we’re waiting. The food was lacking any pastries they just shoved some biscuits on with a scone with currants, which 2 out of the 3 of us don’t like. A few cuts of meat and bruschetta. We asked for a 2nd bottle of Prosecco which they brought to our table . About 25 minutes to the end of the 90 minutes we were allocated we asked for more Prosecco as it’s advertised as unlimited. The waiter must have asked 3 staff if we were allowed, eventually the manager came over and sad we can have 1 more glass each. By the time we received it we had 10 minutes left. Don’t advertise unlimited Prosecco when it’s obviously not something your willing to do. Been to bottomless brunches before & for £35 per person for a tea with “unlimited Prosecco “will definitely not be a returning customer, as this is advertised incorrectly

6 of us had lunch 14/10/2023. Seated in window airy & light. We all choose from Lite bites & everyone enjoyed there meals. Nicely presented. Clean plates says a lot. Great value for money. Clean restaurant. Staff friendly,polite & smart in uniform. Always first class

One of the best local restaurants around. Place is very clean and staff are superb Something for everyone on the menu and it was excellent ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We were visiting Darlington for a couple of nights and decided to try Al Forno. I can honestly say that this was the best Italian meal that we have had in many years! We started by sharing a garlic bread with tomato which was very tasty. This was followed by 2 excellent pasta dishes - one was penne with chicken and a pink peppercorn sauce and the other was spaghetti with mixed seafood - both were full of flavour and delicious. This was washed down with some excellent house wine. We will definitely be back next time we are in Darlington.

Honestly I love al forno and bar forno downstairs, I was here for my hen do and a cocktail masterclass and there were just a few hiccups that made it 4 stars instead of 5. Let's talk about the good first - the staff were all so friendly, Billy who did our masterclass was lovely and handled a bunch of tipsy women very well and made a great cocktail from out of a random selection of spirits. - food was lovely and prompt - my friends were able to go in prior and decorate the room and things were stored to be able to pick up the next day Onto the not so positives - we pre ordered and explicitly stated one person was allergic to nuts and she was then served a starter with pesto as a dressing, this was rectified but I would have liked it not to have happened in the first place as if they hadn't have noticed they could have had a reaction. - bar forno smelt of damp and the women's toilets in there were all blocked or unusable, luckily it was only our party there so we could use the mens bathroom but it needs to be sorted before others go down there as you couldn't have a comfortable night out there with a mixture of men and women. Overall a great experience staff wise and activity wise but the lack of attention to the basement bar with the damp smell and blocked toilets was a let down. Bar fornos used to be my go to for an evening of cocktails and I don't think it would be again until a refurb is complete.

Booked a table for lunch on Saturday. Enjoy going to this restaurant as they have out great measures in place to keep you safe and socially distanced. Great welcome from the staff. We decided to order the calamari and mushrooms to start followed by pollo alla crema and the pollo Cajun. All meals were well presented and extremely tasty as well as being piping hot. As it was lunchtime too we ordered off the happy hour menu so not only was it great food it was at a fantastic price too.

Really impressive meal. I like my steak rare but not bloody. Delighted that the meat was aged sufficiently to be just perfectly tender and tasty. Am not normally a fan of onion rings but these were irresistible and in the lightest batter. All served with mushrooms, salad and twice cooked chips. An absolute bargain meal for two including a bottle of wine. Would highly recommend.

Ate here tonight for the darlington restaurant week. Plenty of choice at a fab price. We got chicken goujons and chicken liver pate to start we ate it yo quick for a photo lol. It was beautiful and a good portion size. For mains we got the burger and penne siciliana which was amazing so tasty. The cocktails were also beautiful. Lovely relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. We have been going to this restaurant as a bit of a favourite for years, but it has been declining. Last week we ventured in and found it to be only slightly less busy than it would be during none social distance times. the food was OK but not great. Most members of staff were wearing mask, but one had it resting on her chin all evening and another didn't have one at all.We didn't feel comfortable sat there.

Visited as 2 friends. Ordered starters my friend had potato skins which were over cooked and dry. I had king prawns that were over cooked and there was hardly any chilli oil drizzle on the bread so it was so dry. My friend ordered chicken and mushroom pasta i wanted Chicken tarragon but wanted to change mash for penne pasta which they couldn’t do as they had a big table upstairs! As an Italian restaurant not being able to change from mash up pasta baffled me so I opted for the same as my friend. We also ordered sweet potato fries and garlic bread with cheese to come with the main. They brought the garlic bread out as a starter so we sent it back but when it saw with the main it was the same one so it was dry and overcooked. The sweet potato fries were also frozen. The service was slow and the waitresses were very very young with limited experience not once did anyone ask if our food was ok. I ordered wine and the waitress delivered it saying “a glass of errrrmmm wine I think rose is this yours” the table next to us ordered a bottle of Chardonnay to which the waitress asked if that was white wine. Our drinks were nice. Overpriced food which wasn’t great tre amici next door is a far better option!

Felt compelled to write this review as we have been going to this restaurant regularly since 2012. What used to be our favourite restaurant in town has steadily declined over the past few years in terms of service & quality. We went for Sunday lunch over August bank holiday. I had the beef & my other half the lamb. The beef was very chewy & not much of it. The veg was quite hard too although I enjoyed the Yorkie, roasties & gravy. The lamb was sliced very thin and again, not much of it. The service is the biggest problem though. From the staff who used to wait tables to the staff they have now is no comparison. For me it’s a lack of training. When I watched the staff waiting tables they are so unsure of themselves, hesitant and don’t engage with the customers fully. Different staff attending our table (when we got their attention) just shows a lack of organisation and leadership on the restaurant floor. A real shame to see this deterioration in what was a great restaurant with great food & atmosphere.

Booked ahead and the pace was very quiet as it was the day after the eat out scheme finished on that week. Walked and and had to wait until the 3 staff finished there chat before we were acknowledged. We ordered drinks, I ordered a ginger beer, i received the smallest glass bottle of ginger beer I have ever seen, it was 125ml, compare that to a can which is 330ml, my Partner got a diet coke and again a very small glass. Food ordered and came pretty quickly, I had a pizza, one of the poorest I have had, the base was not great, tasted it was frozen, i Don't think it was as I saw them cook it, but that's how it tasted, did not enjoy the taste at all. My Partner was happy with her meal. The bill came and I was charged £2.20 for that miniature bottle and nearly 3 quid for the small glass of coke, we felt ripped off. I did stated the to the waitress, she just agreed it was a small bottle. Over 30 quid for 2 drinks and 2 mains felt very expensive for what we received.

Chose from the lunchtime menu which is up to 6pm. I had the chicken parmesan which was huge but very nice. My partner had a chicken dish in a cream sauce which was also good. Nice atmosphere although the music was a bit too loud really but other than that we enjoyed our meal.

We visited Al Forno following a recommendation from a friend and we weren't disappointed. Despite the restaurant being very busy, there was no delay in us being shown to our table and the service was top class throughout our stay. There is a good choice of food and what we ordered was delicious. It's somewhere that we will visit again and I would have no hesitation in recommending this lovely Italian restaurant to anyone.

Visited for my friends Birthday. Greeted immediately upon arrival amd shown to our table. We were served our drinks and meals within good time. Staff were all very polite and friendly. Meals were delicious. Happy with the price we paid. Restaurant looked clean and well maintained.

Upon arrival I told the waitess I had a dairy allergy, she said she would ask the kitchen if what I decided on would be okay to make dairy free, this was strange as usually I’m given another menu or a book to look through myself. Everywhere is different so following this I asked for the beef burger and stated no cheese the girl said she would put on I had an allergy and check it was fine, no one came and said it wouldn’t be fine so I assumed all was ok until my meal arrived, without a burger bun, I asked why I hadn’t got a bread bun and they stated it was because it had dairy in it being brioche? No one said this to me and if I had known I would have ordered something else! They had no even attempted to substitute the lack of burger for anything until I raised the issue and they give me more salad and some onion rings which were average. Considering I was missing half of the meal as my friend had the same only normal I think this is awful I wasn’t informed.

Faultless, as always. Keep up the good work guys. I had the lamb and my husband had the beef. The cauliflower cheese was awesome. The gravy, I loved! Everything was great, given the circumstances, social distancing on point. Thank you

We have been here several times now and never been disappointed. We go early evening for early bird menu which is excellant value. Garlic bread light and delicious. Pasta dishes lovely. Last visit had Chicken Parmesan which was delicicious, served nice and hot with fresh cut chips. Busy restaurant, lovely staff, quick service, good value for money. Would recommend..

What a great little place to eat. The food was hot and came very quickly and the service was the same .We did book as we had a show booked at the Hippodrome that was just a ten minute walk away.The price was really good for what we had .Will be back again soon.

What a great find we decided to have something to eat while we were in Darlington 2 of us wanted Sunday lunch and 1 just something light we all got exactly what we wanted - the Sunday lunch was gorgeous choice of 3 meats chicken - beef and lamb we had the beef and it was lovely and tender my friends light bit was really good also my favourite tho was the dessert platter - I'm going back just to the sticky toffee pudding and sauce I've never had so good

first time there, went on recommendation , meal for 6 people lunch time very nice decor and big menu , all had different meals all served hot and of very good standard ,good service and drink menu ,price and choice of the happy hour menu very good , will certainly recommend and return

Visited with my daughter on a cold, unpleasant, early evening. We were seated promptly at a good table by a radiator, and the service throughout was prompt and friendly. We only had one course - my daughter had asparagus risotto from the a la carte menu and I had mediterranean vegetable risotto from the 'happy hour menu'. Both were good and in ample quantity. We shared some Norwegian mineral water, which was not unreasonably priced compared with the shop price. It became a little noisy later, but overall, a good visit - we felt under no pressure to leave after finishing the meal.
