Akari in Islington

We came here for my fiancé's 30th birthday dinner with my sister and her husband. It had been recommended by numerous people so we came with high expectations. Fortunately, those expectations were met! Between us we ordered 10 dishes to share, to come in two main tranches, which was enough to leave us all satisfied. Everything was very tasty and cooked in an open kitchen so you could see the chef working away. I didn't drink, but my fellow guests all had cocktails, which they enjoyed. The service was very attendant throughout, and they even surprised my fiancé with a birthday dessert on the house, which was generous and unexpected. Overall a very good evening. The only slight downer was the relative lack of atmosphere in the restaurant. We were one of only three covers as far as I could tell, but then again it was a Monday evening in January so I imagine they are busier at the weekends.

Une belle découverte de la cuisine Japonaise, le serveur, très chaleureux, a pris le temps de nous conseiller malgré notre anglais médiocre. Nous avons goûté à de très bons plats, variés et traditionnels. Nous avons passé une excellente soirée.

My husband & I popped in here for lunch. Had a lovely meal. What we had was delicious! Would definitely recommend this place & would come here again when we are next in the area.

Beautiful meal we had many dishes favourites Aburi truffle tuna, wagyu, assortment of nigiri and salmon roe. The cocktails were delicious and good priced, the service is very welcoming and friendly here.

Food was fresh. Service was below par. No atmosphere. Not particularly welcoming. Menu is not terribly long but good enough. Not sure I'd go back.

We really enjoyed our special night out. The food was excellent and the service superb. Exquisite Japanese manager. Worth the money. We will be back.

I used to love this place and go there all the time. Great sushi, reasonable prices and super helpful staff. The new management taking over is incredibly unhelpful. I called them to make a booking flagging that I was loyal customer and i have been going there for the last ten years. The restaurant manager was completely inflexible, couldn’t care less and she invited me to book on open table where everything was obviously fully booked. If you don’t care about your loyal customers, whom do you a care about? Very disappointing.

Good food, wonderful service from friendly staff and reasonable priced menu. Made for a great evening for 21st birthday celebration drinks and meal. Thank you.

Really good quality Sashimi and sushi - we went on a Friday night and it was quite busy. The menu is not too big which I liked and the selection was pretty good. I particularly liked the salmon sashimi marinated in soy sauce and the crab shell sushi. It wasn’t too expensive either. The service was friendly and attentive too, our waitress made us feel at ease and was genuinely friendly. We will definitely go back! Thanks for a lovely evening.

Don't be put off by the exterior of the restaurant. I know the inside isn't much cosier but the food was delicious! I loved the sushi platter and there was so much of it that we could even take some home (in environmentally friendly containers ) my friends loved their soups. Friendly communication via email and easy to book. Toilet facilities were clean and had some nice toiletries. I would happily return!

This is one of my favourite restaurants in London. We normally go here on the weekend and have a combination of Sushi and Main meals. The staff are very friendly and nice. They are very child friendly and its a fun experience to eat and enjoy dining out.

We had such an amazing dinner here a few nights ago and can’t recommend it enough because the food were absolutely delicious and the staff’s service were awesome! We ordered quite a lot of variety of starters and sides to try as well as our mains. I love my sashimi large set and the seafood was all fresh and yummy. My partner had some warm sake and I had the egg custard, cold buckwheat noodles and pork gyoza to share. Recommended venue for family, friends, business meal or a romantic date!

Ordered chicken karage which was disgusting, sent it back and ordered sushi which was ok. No refund offered for the chicken which was sent back, in fact they offered me a £1!!! discount from the total bill?! Horrific service, nasty food and definitely somewhere I would avoid at all costs. Awful.

We come here after so many people recommended this restaurant to us for ages.Sushi was average, nothing special and tasteless, but the most terrible thing is the dirtiness: wine served in dirty glasses you can still see the trace of someone else's lipstick, and plates with traces of someone else's food. Disgusting!

Good food with fair prices, pleasant service also. It was quite busy on a Saturday night so I would suggest making a booking just in case. Good sushi although my Katy’s curry could have done with much more sauce.

Good sashimi and sushi, but also other dishes. Try the grilled salmon belly with salt. Black cod is a bit to sweet. Desserts not to die for. Very friendly staff and cool interior.

I have lived on Essex road for 29 years and I have stumbled on this absolute gem, The food is amazing and so is the service, I would highly recommend the chicken katsu and also the lemon sorbet desert is to literally die for.

Akari is a little gem just off Essex road. I stumbled into what I thought was a pub a few months ago and I now eat there regularly.

No puedo clasificar el lugar en sí como yo pedimos para llevar, pero me quedé muy impresionado. El sashimi era uno de los mejores que he tenido, y he tenido mucho. El hiyayakko era tan sabrosa y el calamar, simplemente delicioso. Sin duda vamos a pedir de nuevo la próxima vez que vaya a Londres.

My cousin gave me the hint to dine there with my wife and 2yrs old son - so we did.

I went about a year ago but I still recall I had a good experience. I had just been with friends at the Rosemary Branch Theatre down the road and my cousin suggested sushi. I was fairly pleased with the food then and the sake I tried (Dewazakura “Oka” Yamagata). Though I can't say the quality beat my experience in Japan, this place certainly still has it's draws.

I came here specifically for the fried oysters - a favourite dish this season in Japan. Having lived in Tokyo for a number of years and missing the kaki furai, I was delighted when I found this dish served at Akari. This was our first visit so I can't comment as others have done as to whether this place has suffered a decline but my dining companion and I were very happy with our meal. We went for a Sunday lunch and the atmosphere of the old pub was friendly and buzzy without being noisy. My friend ordered the chicken katsu from the lunch menu. These items are a better deal in that the big servings are served with rice and miso, ie teishoku style. So he had what counted as a full meal for £8.90. My five oysters (£7.60) came with a bit of salad and were delicious but I would have had to order another dish if I'd been very hungry. This was a very pleasant dining experience, just right for someone missing a hit of Japanese everyday cooking.

I went for dinner with some friends last week. The restaurant wasn't full at all and it was difficult to find a place to seat everyone, even having the table booked in advance.The majority of the kitchen staff was not Japanese. Not sure there was any Japanese there actually. The food took ages to be served and it wasn't served at the same time. Half of the table finished their meal before the other half started theirs. The bill was split between us as well as the tip. When paying the bill I refused to pay the optional 12,5% service charge as the service was really bad. The employee, whose name I didn't have the chance to ask, starting arguing and trying to convince me to pay the service charge. I insisted the charge was optional and I wasn't going to pay it as they didn't deserve it. After saying this I was invited not to come back to the restaurant and to leave the premises immediately. For sure I will never have dinner there again.

This used to be a great restaurant about 5 years ago but we were rather disappointed with our most recent trip. The majority of kitchen staff used to be Japanese but now there are no Japanese staff and you can tell in both the flavour and presentation of the food. Having lived in Japan myself, the food is not bad but tastes like it has been cooked by someone who has never been to Japan. It just slightly missed the mark, which is a shame, as it used to be spot on.

Llevado a este establecimiento para el sábado almuerzo y quedé muy impresionado. El restaurante está ubicado en la esquina de la calle Essex y era claramente una convertido Pub. El ambiente es muy informal y relajado. El personal era muy atento y educado, y el servicio fue impecable. Cuando se trata de la comida, bien este es un guau, totalmente sabrosa y variada selección de platos de estilo japonés. Buenas porciones de tamaño, con un precio razonable y muy agradable. Felizmente aquí.

We have been going to this restaurant for a few years now with friends and have to say it really is yummy!The sushi is really good, as are a few other dishes like this eggplant thing with miso glaze.Yum!

Regular diners at Akari. Excellent quality sushi/sashimi freshly made. Good range of hot options. Informal & bustling atmosphere. Tables are quite close together so wouldn't recommend for a romantic meal, but a firm local favourite.

- Mediocre food AT BEST. My wife didn't like a single dish amd we've travelled across Japan eating all sort of food. I personally didn't find anything particularly good, though I could at least eat them - Rushing impersonal and rude service. - Medium to expensive prices related to quality. I can safely recommend you to avoid Akari considering the amount of great Japanese restaurants in London.

Akari Restaurant - is without any doubt the worst place I ever work, I am not kidding.First, I will take it from the side of the customer: sushi is compare to competition restaurants really expensive in term of location, place of itself (old pub rebuild on sushi resto).Then in terms of hygiene, this place never wipe the floor only sweep, as it takes a time and the owner of Akari is already pushing so hard on stuff to do everything as quick as possible. Men's toilet is in horrible condition, toilet are licking and you can't flush any of the urinals - to clean this you have to hold your breath.Another thing it's the owner push all the stuff to tell a customers that SERVICE CHARGE (12 % ) goes to stuff, which is not true ! I imagine, he can well cover minimum wage he is paying with this money.With tips ! Tips are divided every 3-4 month so meanwhile you realize where you work and you decide to leave- of course you will not receive anything !Owner and his wife are only complaining, overwhelmed, very picky and never happy with work of anyone, never giving positive feedback or simple thank you.When I asked to owner about service charge I have been told it's not my business, and I can go if I will speak like this with someone who is paying me (well ).THE BEST in the end: in this restaurant only stuff food is rice everyday !!!! A la carte menu, so you will spend quite a bit on izakaya dishes - typical ones, as well as original twists, some of which did not appeal to me (e.g. Takosu - boiled octopus and okra with fresh cucumber and tomato on plum and shiso leaf jelly)Tempura batter was greasy, pork belly rich, aubergine and miso done well. But none of our dishes outstanding - perhaps sashimi/sushi is a better option?

Fuera de los circuitos turísticos habituales este restaurante japonés ha sido una agradabilísima sorpresa en nuestro periplo londinense. Cerveza de barril japonesa para empezar, berenjenas gratinadas (nasu dengaku), sushi de atún (tuna avocado roll sushi), filetitos de ternera Negishio (negishio beef steak), y pulpo (tako butsu) fueron tratados con todo respeto. Mención especial merecen la berenjena y el sushi, platos que repetimos. Extraordinario. El local en rústico fue un pub anteriormente, goza de ambiente tranquilo y agradable, con un servicio de comedor amable y profesional.Muy recomendable.

Akari is not your place if you're a purist and want sashimi or traditional Japanese food done exactly as they do in the motherland. But, their food is 100% authentically Japanese flavours, and their put modern twists on some of their dishes, and as someone who grew up in Japan, I appreciate their food immensely. Yes, it is a bit pricey — a la carte menus tend to be expensive. Yes, it can get quite loud and busy on the weekends, and if you aren't on one of the few separated tables, it feels like being on a Tokyo subway during rush hour (an exaggeration, of course). But I find myself going back time and time again, so they must be doing something right ;).

this was our second visit to Akari. The place was - as usual I guess- too busy and my feeling was that the tables was too close to each other, increasing the noise and creating some discomfort. The area has many restaurants to offer, so details make sometimes the difference. The food was good, the service a bit slow and prices normal. Deserts, as in most Japanese restaurants, rather limited in choice and taste.

So this place is fine. It's not dirty and the food is not horrid but it's also not great and it's very pricey for what it is. There are plenty of much nicer places just down the road, give it miss.

Not a Japanese food expert, but this is one of the best sushi I had in three different countries. Tasty, well made, well presented and with a good service. Not the cheapest one, but surely worth what you 're paying for.

Akari is een plek waar je voor een redelijke prijs Japans kan eten in de vorm van noedels of sushi.Raad het vooral aan voor lunch of takeaway. De tafeltjes zijn klein en het is vaak te druk om een goed gesprek te hebben.Eten zelf is lekker en prima voor de prijs.

Was waiting whole week come here for weeks Though it's nice place and nice food Unfortunate all ends up as disaster Managers was not competent, waiters was completely confuse .Food was not Japanese at all probably just name . Horrible food and horrible service!I had to ask for servilletes with the entrè and cutlery / chop sticks for the main... And then they tried to charge me 12'5% service charge and when I refused I got what I suppose really nice words in another language!

A hidden gem sits just moments away from upper street. A fantastic isakaya. The grilled cod is a must have.

We've been coming here for 5+ years and it's always lovely. Mellow lighting, polite calm unobtrusive service and consistently good food. If I can convince our kids away from the favourites tanuki soba and salmon teriyaki there's a wide menu to explore. The place is really nice and reasonably air conditioned, which is always nice on a warm day. Service was fast and friendly. Had a chicken teriyaki which was nice, the portion was generous but it is a shame it's not coming with any side (rice or noodles)

Stumbled upon this place over a year ago and I have been going back every now and then. Not because anything is wrong with it just that it can be pricey. The food is good and the ambiance is nice. Service is friendly. Highly recommend the mackerel and the pork belly stir fry with kimchi and bean sprouts. The udon here is good too. My only complaint is it's a little pricey :)

Was taken her after being told how good it was and it delivered. Massively. The sushi is unbelievable!!! The nicest sushi I have had in a while, contending with the likes of sushi samba just without the price or the view. GO FOR THE SOFT SHELL CRAB!!!!! Best piece single piece of sushi I've ever had.

can here with a group of four and easily found a table. The man serving us was quiet entertaining and was teaching our italian friends a few japanese phrases. He kept us well entertained till our food came. We had the tuna tataki, crab rolls and quiet a few other dishes. Loved them all. I went over with a friend of mine for the first time and we definitely found one of the best Japanese food I never had! I suggest the tuna tataki and the soft shell crab roll which was delicious! The staff make us feel super comfortable, from the host who show us our table an European Guy from Italy which was very kind and polite, to the waitress which served us with a gorgeous smile all dinner on! That was for sure one of the best experience I never had in London! Looking forward to go back again! Akari rules!!!

Today I visited Akari and was appaled by the rudeness of the host who showed us to our table.The restaurant was about 20% full yet he insisted on seating us at a small table up against and also inside a single diner.We walked in and were asked if we had a booking, I said no. This front of house person sneered at me, turned around and walked to a table by the wall. He pointed at the table, put down the menus and walked away. If my friend wasnt heading off for a flight an hour later we would have definately walked out. Its about 20 years since someone in a restaurant has been this rude to me.This level of service is totally unacceptable. We ordered some food and it was lovely. it was served by two charming waitresses. They were charming. They both went completely out of their way to make us feel welcome.I have lived near this building for 33 years. I came to this building when it was a pub, many times when it was a French restaurant. I will never set foot in it again as long as I can see this tattooed host working there. I am not and never was going to be a big customer for this restaurant as I only come to London for one month a year. Akari have done themselves a major disservice by keeping this one front of house person on.Despite the quality of the food -which we loved -neither of us will be recommending this restaurant to any of our clients. There is no room for rudeness in the restaurant business.

I've been here quite a few times now and every single time I've been there the guy at the front has been so incredibly rude.One of the times I went in the restaurant was almost empty with reserved signs on almost every table. We asked for a table for two and he sighed, huffed and puffed, Gave us a table and told us we only had an hour because they had so many reservations... in the time frame of us being there, only a couple of people came in and the restaurant was still half empty.

I think Akari has the best sushi ever! I love everything on the menu and everything about it. It is so good I recommend anything although it is a little bit on the pricy side it is completely worth it!

I know this restaurant since its launch in 2007/2008 and through the years Akari has always stayed a place with quality food and service. It has become pricier, naturally, a very popular place in the heart of Islington but it is worth it.

Fried oysters in this restaurant taste as a gross spongy sea phlegm. Don't get them!Service isn't great either, we arrived at 6.30 to find a completely empty restaurant and they asked us to leave before 8 and hurried us during our short staying. Definitively we had the feeling they were overestimating themselves. Being just us and the staff we felt uncomfortable as they kept making awkward insisting eye contact with us.

Really good Japanese food in a friendly almost family setting. Brilliant selection of dishes each of which is of high quality. The aubergine starter dish is pure genius and any of the tempura dishes are brilliant. Not greasy, light, just right. Good selection of Japanese beers and sake. Good value for money.

This is a great local Japanese restaurant, run by friendly staff. The quality of the sushi and sashimi is excellent. I'd try the cod with miso, the sashimi and nigiri sushi. The green tea ice cream is great. The wines I guess aren't brilliant, but they're fine.

My girlfriend, who is Japanese and I really like Akari. It is like a modern Japanese pub that you would find in Tokyo. The prices are reasonable and the variety is good. Draft Japanese beer is available on tap. We ordered 4 dishes as a late night dinner, and they were all perfect. Service was good and friendly. The Beef tataki and salmon skin roll were the standout choices. We will be back!

A slightly unexpected combination of a British pub interior and Japanese cuisine - but the place is definitely worth visiting. The best maki I've tried in London so far!

We come here often, best sushi in london (after sushi samba, but for a fraction of the price). Great dishes in general (try the gyoza!). Always busy during weekends so book in advance. Great staff and atmosphere.

Great food and reasonable prices. Would recommend the Tuna Tataki and Salmon Teriyaki. Worth booking in advance as gets really busy at the weekend.

Oops. That's akira not akari. Akari is amazing though, stunning menu, great food well prepared. The space is interesting although occasionally a littlefrusrating - it's pretty packed in. Try the tuna special sushi dish. Katsu also great.

The staff are extremely forgetful, after asking where my order was twice (both times I was told it was on its way) it didn't ever arrive. The manager said the waitress had misheard my order and left off an item that we had already waited 20 minutes for. I was told I could choose wait further but I asked for this bill and left. £35 for a few pieces of average sushi, I left feeling annoyed that I had parted with my money and still hungry due to the fact i didn't actually even get all the food I ordered!I would't ever go back.

Geniale, semplicemente geniale l'idea di realizzare un sushi restaurant in quello che prima era un pub! Non mi ricordo cosa abbiamo preso, a parte un'ottima BIRRA GIAPPONESE e la NASHIOKI BEEF (almeno credo si scriva così). In ogni caso ho mangiato il miglior sushi della mia vita! Era buonissimo! Abbiamo speso circa 30£ a testa, ma li valeva tutti quei soldi.

I live nearby and have had the pleasure of going to this restaurant a number of times. The food is great and easily compares to/beats many of the sushi restaurants I've been to in the square mile. Definitely book ahead as it is usually pretty busy (this includes weeknights). Food arrives in good time but the service is nothing to write home about, however, I would never describe them as 'rude' (as some other reviews seem to suggest).

Siamo stati in questo locale a cena, con amici italiani ma tempo trasferitisi a Londra, e bimbi piccoli (...che hanno fatto parecchia confusione ma tutto il personale si è dimostrato molta paziente!)C'era poca gente ma il servizio non è stato velocissimo....ma abbiamo mangiato davvero bene! Il vero cibo giapponese: abbiamo assaggiato diverse cose ed era tutto buonissimo! Ottimo il rapporto qualità-prezzo! Da tornarci!!!

We went for a birthday, it's nice, and that's probably the most I can say - basically a pub that's become a restaurant. It looks like the pub was bought out and it came with the furniture.Food . . . ranged from average to not the best I'm afraid, although the Salmon Carpaccio was pretty tasty. The whole thing just seem a little inexperienced and when one of the waiting people brought over the Prawn Tempura (which wasn't bad) a piece fell on the table and . . . . . . no . . . . . . h/she picked it up with his/her fingers and put it back on the serving dish!!!Personally, I don't mind (I was surprised though) and I think some people would have had been understandably unimpressed.So, overall, to be honest not the best but not the worst.And as someone once said, not being the worst stands in some rank of praise.

The food here is excellent. My favourite dish is the tenuki soba and the staff are really friendly and kind and helpful too. I do not care if it is overpriced because the food is so delicious! I hope to come here again as it is such a nice place.

In this place you can have a very good japanese food. Sushi and sashimi are very good, fish was fresh and well prepared.The only thing is that the place is a little bit noisy because you have a lot of table, but it is worth it!Price are ok compared to the food.

At 45£ a person including 2 pints I think it's a bit much. We got enough to fill to grown adults bellies, without over-stuffing ourselves or leaving the restaurant still hungry.Nigiri deluxe selection is good, and we got other random rolls.Anyway, not complaining here, but don't go crazy ordering away..

Délicieux sushi (surtout ceux au crabe) dans un cadre très english. Le prix par contre est assez élevé.
