Ajiwai in County Durham

Really really disappointed with my take out sushi. I usually rave about ajiwai however the quality of the sushi I have just eaten is appalling. I paid £15.80 for sushi filled with tough, salmon skin, no salmon in sight. It was completely inedible. My sister also got the salmon teriyaki for £18.80 which was so dry and flavourless, no sauce on the salmon at all.

We booked our wife’s birthday table for 7.30pm for 4 adults and our 3 year old grandson. On arrival we noticed how the table were rammed together and in between where you walked down the centre to get to your table was so narrow I struggled to get my stroller down. The manager took us to the back of the restaurant near to where food was being cooked and next to the toilets, he then asked if he could move my stroller so my wife and daughter had to hold on to me until our table was ready ay 8.15pm. Our grandson was bored and not really interested in eating by now. The price of the drinks was a joke, half a blackcurrant £2.40 half a lager over £5.00, the menu came and having had 3 heart attacks in October i cant eat anything hot and spicy, so on the menu i have no idea what anything is, so the waitress says this chicken dish is hot but the beef one isn’t, so I opt for that, even the daughter who booked the restaurant said it will be fine. All the food is on the table when I put one piece of beef in my mouth and it blews my head off, so daughter tries itvand says to waitress that it isn’t supposed to be hot, the waitress then says yes very hot and walks off. So i end up eating boiled rice. The bill comes £144. 2am im up all night being sick. Not a good place at all

Lunch on a Saturday was a poor experience from start to finish. We had booked earlier in the week but there was no table reserved for us and the restaurant was quite cold as well. The food all arrived at different times. One of the main courses arrived before the starters. The starters - edamame beans and vegetable gyoza arrived - then arrived with the other main courses. The edamame beans were okay but the gyoza were unappealing and soggy. The pork belly teppanyaki was quite tasty but the pork belly ramen was unpleasant - the broth was milky rather than clear and the pork itself was very fatty - as a result, both my guest and I decided to leave it. The food served did not seem very fresh. I normally love gyoza and ramen, so this was very disappointing. The pork bellyteppanyaki was quite tasty but nothing special.

Lovely authentic food , friendly service, excellent value for money. Great variety of choice. Food is brought out when cooked not as starter then mains so pls consider this .

Always brilliant food. Very happy we have it close bye. Staff are always very helpful and attentive also. Really good spot.

The food was good shame about the poor service Initially the waitress spilt our drinks. Then my wife’s meal arrived 10 minutes before everyone else’s food.

Have been a few times and has been great everytime. The selection is amazing and the food is delicious. Have tried quite a bit of the menu now and haven’t been disappointed ever. We came in with our 3 year old to have a BBQ today and the food was marinated beautifully and the experience was really fun and social. Was worried about my son next to the hot plate but it worked out really well and he enjoyed it. Staff are always super nice and helpful.

Had a takeaway from Ajiwai for the first time - everything was delicious, had the bento box and tempura side. I'd tried other Japanese places in Durham, Ajiwai is more expensive, but you can taste the quality (can't say the same for others).

Came here for late lunch with a friend, the decor was a little barebones and there were very few tables, but I assume this was due to Covid (though it looked like the restaurant hadn't been fully decorated). Most orders seemed to be deliveries, but very few people were actually eating at the restaurant themselves. The menu also appeared quite pricey at first despite the wide variation. Having said this, the food itself is pretty good! The sushi rolls were beautifully done and very tasty, and I particularly like their japanese curries. Their ramen stock isn't amazing-it's come out bland quite a few times for me, so I don't get it anymore-but they've just recently started doing bento boxes I believe which I aim to try!

This is the best Japanese food I’ve had since I was in Japan I’d say it was on a par with anything I had there. Really tasty. The decor needs work but the food more than makes up for it.

Food was amazing, service was even better. Really recommend the Dragon Fly roll, and any of the ramens (the noodles are so fresh). Great experience!

Went for an Asian Sunday lunch....food was excellent and the staff particularly Katherine couldn't have been better.....only negative was the shabby clipboard paper menus...little surprising in these covid days. Will definitely be back though

Fabulous food, best sushi I have tasted in years, great service and very friendly staff. Reasonably priced and very close to the city centre.

4 of us went here for a dinner before our younger daughter started at University. Her favourite food is Japanese and she was delighted. We would thoroughly recommend.

My wife and I have ordered delivery from Ajiwai multiple times now and have tried much of the menu. Orders are always accepted and delivered promptly and with lovely service. The food is always super tasty. We often order ramen, sushi and donburi. Always thoroughly enjoy our food. Couldn’t recommend this place more for your Japanese food fix!

Have eaten at the restaurant but also ordered online. Always great food, both sushi/sashimi and noodles/rice dishes. Very good home delivery service too, the driver De Sousa was spot on, friendly and very professional.

All 6 of us delighted by the delicious fresh authentic food. Love to come back for an evening setting.
