Give afternoon tea a miss. For the price and the Marr Hall status it was extremely disappointing. It was a gift...had I paid for it I would have complained. Eating area quite uncomfortable. Low sagging chairs ...meant I had to jump up and down to reach the tray. Afternoon tea was nothing impressive...had better for less than half the price elsewhere....

We had afternoon tea today and it was really lovely. The sandwiches were fresh, the cream tea fab( great scones and Roddas cream) and the cakes absolutely delicious and very fresh. Our waiter was very attentive, we moved rooms as there was wedding preparations going on in the main hall lounge so we moved to the quieter bar lounge and the barman moved tables around to accommodate us, our waiter kept us constantly replenished with tea and coffee and kindly boxed up the cakes and scones that we couldn’t manage. Would thoroughly recommend and we look forward to going again on our visit Scotland in a few months to see our family. I haven’t given 5 stars as it’s a tad overpriced.

The afternoon tea at Mar Hall is bog standard. Iver priced in my opinion. You have to walk all the way up the hall to be seated rather than a member of staff approaching you. Its just very strange. No menus on the tables. Have to walk up to the desk to get attention from the waiting staff. Furniture has a very tired look. Carpet at the entrance and inside could do with a good wash. The afternoon tea is of a very poor standard and over priced.

So looking forward to this but was one of the worst afternoon teas we have had. Sandwiches were poor selection and quality of products was not great. Scones were mediocre, jam was not great quality. Cakes were very poor and selection was disappointing. No offers of refill of coffee. This was bought by my daughter as a birthday gift and was not a special offer or voucher.

Comfy seats in the Grand Hall and all the staff were friendly and polite especially the young man who brought our food and took the payment (did not get his name but he is an asset to the hotel). Highly recommend a visit.

We had a beautiful afternoon tea at Mar Hall and they gave us a lovely private room overlooking the Clyde river. Nicola and Samantha our wonderful waitresses, took great care of us and nothing was too much bother. My father, who is 91 years old remembered the hotel from when he was an 18 year old which would be over 70 years ago when it was a hospital. He remembered delivering coal from Old Kilpatrick train station via the ferry and then hand shoveled into the coal bunkers of the hospital. Lovely family day out.

Fun to feel like Lord and Lady for an hour .The grounds are gorgeous, feeding down to the golf course and the Clyde . It was nice and cosy on a slightly chilly afternoon. Lovely sandwich selection, nice scones and cakes . Plenty of tea and good coffee. Special mention to the 2 ladies who served us with a smile .

Scones and cakes were lovely as was our waitress Svetlana. They really need to put a bit more thought into the sandwiches which were very ordinary. Ham, cheese, tuna, egg mayo. A little bit of salad or pickle would have lifted these. They had obviously been made earlier as the bread had dried out - one had started to curl! This was served in the beautiful main hall which also seemed to be the main thoroughfare into the hotel so it was busy with staff and guests going to and fro. Sorry Mar Hall but for me it was not a 5 star experience.

OK, so we were bought this as a gift, but that said, we would happily have paid full price. We had a wonderful two hours over afternoon tea on a chilly November afternoon. There was a warm welcome from reception as we were guided through into the most impressively decorated and furnished long hallway, which was lovely and warm too.Another warm welcome from our two waitresses and we were quickly settled on a large table (for 4 and there were only the 2 of us) and a comfy sofa.A pot of tea for me and a pot of coffee for my better half and then a short wait for the three-deck cake stand of goodies, and more tea and coffee.Six dainty sandwiches: salmon and cucumber, cheese wither chutney and ham with mustard. Oh, and two very tasty haggis fritters. Then, wonderfully light and tasty scones with a choice of three jams and clotted cream.By then we were full so the eight small cakes we had left were kindly boxed for us to take home and enjoy later.I've read the mixed reviews, and frankly am amazed. Our experience was just wonderful, an all round top experience.

The hotel is beautiful and well maintained. Furnishings and art work all beautiful.Staff were welcoming and friendly and attentive. BUT afternoon tea was disappointing, and failed to live up to our £50 expectation ! Although tea was plentiful and warm enough, the sandwiches and cakes were at best average. Two little rolls with cheese and pickle , 4 triangle sandwiches with ham and too much mustard and fingers sandwiches with salmon. Could have done with a better mix such as some egg and cress or tuna etc. A part from salmon all very bland and too much ham and mustard on very dry bread with crusts. Cakes were not worth the money . Slithers of various cakes were either mushy and soggy or far too rich. Scone was ok . I have had a much nicer afternoon tea in M&S ! For 1/4 of the price per person. It was such a shame as the surroundings and staff are excellent .

MORE AT TripAdvisor

I have been at this hotel a number of times and honestly have nothing good to say about it.I have never stayed as I live 5 minutes down the road but I have been involved in a wedding party here which was poorly handled and caused the couple no end of stress and have visited a couple of times for afternoon tea and that's what I'm basing this review on.They market their afternoon tea as "Afternoon Tea in the Grandhall" so we booked this to celebrate two birthdays within the family. We booked a couple of weeks in advance and on arrival, my mother had been given gift vouchers for Mar Hall which were used to pay for this afternoon tea. We handed them over when asked, before we were seated. So afternoon tea was not in the grand hall on this occasion, but in a side room which hadn't been prepared. There were 7 of us and we were sat around a little table which had a shelf below that was coated in dust, with 6 chairs. My sister and I shared a chair whiled they went away, for some time to find another. They eventually did and then they brought out the tea and sandwiches. This hotel is NOT a 5 start hotel and certainly not even a 2 start based one what happened next. The sandwiches were hard, the surface of the bread had gone the way it goes when left out, and the tea was cold. When we complained we were told it was because of where we had CHOSEN to sit in relation to the kitchen! By the time it gets there is isn't fresh or warm any more, but that the tea would be replaced! Now for the sandwiches to be the way they were they would have had to have been made the night before or at least that morning and left out. Bread doesn't go stale and tea doesn't go cold in the 5 minute walk from the kitchen. So after the disappointment of firstly being seated in a side room, then the terrible food and tea, then the insult of the staff thinking we were stupid enough to believe that the walk from the kitchen to where we were seated was such a distance that bread would go stale, we were asked to pay!!!My father explained that gift vouchers had been handed over before we were seated which exactly covered the bill. We were told they didn't have gift vouchers from us and could we tell them who they had been given too. So they went off looking for the gift vouchers while my father looked for the girl they had been handed to. Needless to say neither were found and after being told that we would be paying for nothing as they had just taken a large amount of money from us that they had then lost, we left.We have never been back here, and we never will. A member of the family has worked a Mar Hall and a few have stayed there I think they are lucky to be holding on to their 5 star status. Beautiful building, terrible service, won't be back and do not speak highly of this place.

The sandwiches had simple but very well done fillings such as cheese savoury or ham and tasted fresh and delicious. The cake selection was lovely and plenty of it. The scones were possibly the best we've ever tasted - they were full sized which was great when you're eating the best scone you've ever tasted...but when it's part of afternoon tea it makes for a very filling feast. They had a selection of tea on offer and you could have as much as you want which is great. Apparently the coffee machine was broke so only filter coffee on offer on the day of our visit. Service was friendly. We all really enjoyed our afternoon and would absolutely come again. We did visit as part of a deal so not sure what it cost normally but at the deal price we were very happy. (1)The location - , I did not appreciate bellboys passing by with guests suitcases; (2) having a wedding party walk through (3) the seating was low and uncomfortable (4) sandwiches were of a poor standard and not many on offer; (5) too many cakes which where of substandard variety. (6)We had to ask for more tea/coffee which is not my experience of other venues; (7) only one choice of jam - not everyone likes raspberry jam whether in season or not.(8) the price was reasonable - however not for what was provided AND the background music was too LOUD and not easy on the ear - in fact incongruent for the setting.I would not return for afternoon tea.

I have struggled as to wither or not to write this review but have decided to go ahead I wanted to spoil my mum for Mother’s Day this year and thought Mar Hall was the perfect place to take her. The Mother’s Day Lunch was advertised as being set in the Chrystal Room. A stunning dining room with beautiful table cloths, napkins, etc...just the place to spoil your Mum. When we arrived we were ushered through to a side room next to the Chrystal room were the tables were blandly set with no dressing whatsoever which left the dining area looking pretty drab and not very special compared to the Chrystal room next door. At this point I thought this is not where I booked but did not want to make a fuss as I didn't want to spoil my Mums day. Things just went downhill. The dinner came and it was pretty awful. The veg was not fresh and tasted as if it had come straight from a can, the meat was tough. Overall very disappointed. The best bit about the meal was the coffee. A few days later I decided to phone the manager to give him feedback. Despite the promise of "We will look after you Mrs XXXXX" nothing came of it. A truly disappointing experience, Perhaps with this review they may start to look after their customers and take feedback more seriously!

My husband and I have visited Mar Hall around 6 times in 2 years, including for Christmas dinner in 2013. We have always loved it and could never find a bad thing to stay, until now....We booked for afternoon tea, at a cost of almost £20 per person. This gets us a range of sandwiches, cakes, scones and tea or coffee. We have always considered it to be the best afternoon tea around, until now....Table service was exceptional as we felt customer service was, until now....First impression of the tea was that this was going to be lovely, as usual, however as I began eating through my scone I noticed something hanging from it, I began to pull it and there was a hair, right there, in my scone, a hair!!! Stuck into the dough of the scone!!! I cannot tell u how disgusted and off putting this was. I called the waitress over and she removed the offending scone and promised a replacement and a discount off of our bill. I didn't want to eat the rest of the tea and we quickly asked for the bill. Imagine my horror when I got the bill to see that they had deducted £2!!! £2 off for a hair in my scone. I'm sorry, but a place like Mar Hall, that's a total insult. I've just paid almost £40 for an afternoon tea and left disgusted. I complained to the hotel afterwards and was promised that if I returned I would be "well looked after". I had already purchased a voucher for afternoon tea so thought I would see how Mar Hall could recover this situation. What did the do to recover it? Nothing, they did nothing, absolutely nothing, not even a complimentary glass of champagne for the disgust at finding a hair and basically ruining my tea. I am completely appalled by their "who cares" attitude and cannot believe that a frequent visitor could be treated so badly. We WON'T be back for afternoon tea, and we WON'T be back for Christmas dinner - I have enough hair of my own thanks!!

Went here for afternoon tea at £22.50 each.Meh. You can get better afternoon teas for less elsewhere. There was no variety of tea or coffee on offer. There would have been no music (and little atmosphere) had there not been a wedding ongoing at the time. The cakes were good though and the scones excellent, and waiters were fairly attentive. We tried to go a walk round the grounds but there were no pathways and the 'gardens' were in a very poor state. The most striking exterior feature of this hotel is the massive car park in front of it!Its kind of wedged between a golf course, a housing estate for the super rich, and a commercial Hewlett Packard office. Its just doesn't look or feel truly 5 star, or worth the premium price tag.

first off, well done to the waitress's in the grand hall, they do an excellent job and are extremely attentive and the service is faultless.Brilliant afternoon tea, gorgeous sandwiches, scones with the most delicious clotted cream, top with 5 cakes each! couldnt quite manage it all and took some home in a box! will definately be back. I paid full price for this, im not sure where other negative views on here come from...perhaps they paid for itison or groupon deals, which; in my experience, you just dont get the same service/quantity - thats my experience with other restaurants, not Mar Hall.i couldnt fauly my afternoon tea experience, it was first class scrummy!!

Went here for a meal for my birthday. This is a 5 star hotel, which is reflected in the location, atmosphere, service, etc. However the price of the menu must be described as reasonable, considering the service and cuisine being offered. The food was beautifully presented, the young staff perfectly trained and the overall experience was excellent. Do try this as a place to go for that special occasion - you should not be disappointed!

Our tea/coffee orders were taken by a waitress, who was very attentive throughout. The sandwiches and cakes arrived shortly after and everything looked lovely! They had arranged a vegetarian stand without any bother, as we'd informed them in advance of the dietary requirements of the group. The sandwiches were okay, but it was the cakes that stole the show! The scones were light and very tasty with clotted cream and jam. I really enjoyed the custard tarts too! There were madeleines, slices of walnut loaf, mince pies and more... despite a good effort from the 6 of us, we didn't finish it! We were, however, given the remaining cakes home which was great.I think the only thing I would say is that we were sat at the table closest to the entrance to reception, so there was a bit of a draft when the main door was opened... take a cardigan! :)

This was a lovely relaxing afternoon spent in a beautiful hotel. The garden room was the perfect setting for a family celebration. Our meal was beautifully cooked and the choices varied, and we were very efficiently served by Daniel who was extremely courteous and helpful. This is the second time we have had a birthday meal here and we could not fault it. Would recommend it to anyone wishing to go somewhere special.

Gorgeous setting, the hall was very luxurious and everything you'd expect from a five star hotel. The staff were very attentive and friendly and the food was well presented, varied and delicious. What I especially liked (and what I've never found in other hotels) is that we were told if we wanted anything wrapped up to take home that was no problem.

This hotel is in stunning settings and is a lovely building, however it is disappointing in that some of the fixtures, fittings and furniture are well past their best and the place smells "foosty". In the reception the upper windows are filthy, as are the panels in front of the windows. Reception seems a bit chaotic if staff are dealing with more than one visitor. The steps up to reception are quite steep and not disabled friendly. Afternoon tea is in the grand hall. Stunning ceilings and views. Pianist played throughout our visit, although we were seated next to piano and found communication a bit awkward. You sink into the chairs/settees - again very awkward for anyone of advancing age or disability. Tea was served - we were offered tea or coffee. The sandwiches and cakes were served quite some time later. Meat/smoked salmon/cheese options - held together with a wooden cocktail stick. Ok sandwiches - nothing special. Scones served with jam (mini shop bought jars of jam) and clotted cream that was so thick someone thought it was butter. Lovely scones. Nice lemon curd tartlets, mini pavlovas and ok slices of regular cake. No change of plates between sandwiches and cakes. No pastry forks to eat cakes with - just a knife (no change of knife for sandwiches/cakes). Staff did offer to box up remaining items - no ta - nothing exciting enough to want to take home! There were several tables not taken, however we felt the staff were trying to get us too leave before we were ready to go. They overcharged us - which was quickly rectified when we advised them that the figure they stated during booking was less than the bill they gave us. We were expecting similar service and facilities as another popular Loch Lomond based hotel. That was certainly not the case. Not sure what the overnight accommodation is like, but the afternoon tea and service were not that of a 5 star establishment. Bit embarrassing for me as I booked it and therefore feel the party were let down because of my decision.Would I recommend the afternoon tea? NO! I dont understand why this hotel doesnt improve its service based on the many poor reviews it has had - not only for afternoon tea. If you are considering visiting Mar Hall - please read the independent reviews prior to booking and make your own judgement from them.

I was so disappointed with my first visit to Mar Hall, bought directly from the hotel Afternoon Tea vouchers as a Christmas gift for mum. On the day we were left unattended for 15 mins before anyone spoke to us, after being seated our table was overtaken by guests who were attending a wedding there and then when I got home I discovered that not all the food we had left was given back to us, as promised on their website. Myself and 3 members of my family decided on a whim to visit Mar Hall for afternoon tea on Bank Holiday Monday 6th May - we didn't have Groupon (or the like) vouchers. What we received for £22.50 per head was absolutely terrible and EXTREMELY poor value for money. The cost wasn't so much the problem rather the quality of (a) the food (b) the service and (c) the venue. Yes I do like nice things and unfortunately Mar Hall just didn't live up to my expectations. The actual afternoon tea was terrible value for money and just not very nice. In a five star establishment I would expect nice crockery and leaf tea but neither were present at Mar Hall. The Food - white cheap bread sandiwches with very poor fillings, and not very many of them either, the cakes tasted like bought in and tasted stale. On a positive, the scones were ok.The lounge area where we ate was very run down with old fashioned (and not in a nice way) couches, furnishings and decoration very tatty. The toilets were dirty and the sink area completely flooded. This was the first time we had visited Mar Hall and from our first impression it seems that it is a very uncared for hotel and in desparate need of some love and affection. Definitely not a 5 star experience. All in all extremely bad value for money and wouldn't rush back. You could probably get a much better and fresher afternoon tea in a local cafe and save yourself some money. Had been considering booking a spa break for myself and my daughter but would have serious misgivings now based on our first experience of Mar Hall.Very disappointing.

I won a voucher for afternoon tea for two at Mar Hall. Absolutely delicious sandwiches - the smoked salmon was excellent. The cakes were lovely - very filling. Took an empty ice cream tub to take left overs, but the staff offered us a take away box anyway. The scones were fabulous - crispy on outside, lovely and soft inside. They came with clotted cream and jam - very nice. Not the type of place I would normally go - the cost of afternoon tea is usually £22.50 per person, but I suppose you are paying for the 'ambience' as well. There was a gentleman playing on the grand piano, although the tunes were a bit sombre. The grand hall was lovely - comfy couches and giant tapestries on the wall. Very attentive staff also.

We were served in the great hall which was relaxing and pleasant, however this hotel is very tired and very much in need of decor. Well worth a visit though as the views are magnificent. We had a meal at Mar Hall to celebrate a special family occasion and we were bitterly disappointed with the whole experience. The portion sizes were the smallest we have been served anywhere. The venison was advertised to be served with sweetbreads and these never appeared. When we asked, the waitress giggled and said the chef sent his apologies. No explanations or alternatives were suggested. The halibut was very overcooked and the pistachio cake was dry. We wrote to the manager afterwards to express our disappointment. He phoned to ask for details and said he would investigate and phone back. We heard nothing more. This is hugely overpriced and the food is very poor. I would never recommend this to anyone and certainly not if you are hoping to have a special meal.

Have visited this hotel on three separate occasions and each time has been different. First time over 7 years ago where we had dinner and in all was a lovely quiet evening with nice service. Next visit was for afternoon tea with friends five years later and it was altogether different, mistakes were made with our order and very slow service, after complaining we weren't even given an apology. Last was to a recent wedding and it seems they still haven't addressed any of their issues, two small toilets to accommodate over two hundred people, over charging at the bar, under staffed, cold food with tiny portions, and a marquee with a smell like an old folks home to say the least. I urge people to think twice about considering this hotel for any kind of occasion. Our party's table spent hundreds of pounds at the bar and were then treated with utter disrespect. This is not the kind of service you would expect from a first class hotel hence the reason it is ranked number 2 of only two hotels in Bishopton. As far a we could see they just simply don't accept their hotel could be this in- efficient. Treat yourself elsewhere and it will be money well spent.

Looks like the previous good reviews caught this place on a good day. Food and service was awful with bar staff out to con. We attended a wedding in the hotel and the atmosphere was drab. Bar staff each time we ordered a drink added as much as ten pounds extra on to the actual cost and each time pretended to make genuine mistakes. I mean honestly At almost £30 for four drinks did they really think that we were that drunk we would gladly hand over £40 instead..maybe if we could actually have got drunk we would have but the place was so cold we sat with our coats on most of the day pretending to be ok for the sake of the beautiful bride and groom who had paid a lot of money to the hotel for not much in return. When dinner eventually arrived it was was close to freezing. Staff ignored the complaints and seemed to think the hotel was untouchable. They just looked at everyone complaining like they had horns on their head. I genuinely think any complaints are shrugged off and ignored because the hotel has an inflated ego....hate to break the news that a couple of rooms with nice wallpaper and furnishings doesn't help you pull off world class status....yes one of the disillusioned staff had the cheek to say this to us. My advice to any young couple would be go somewhere that your money will be well spent avoid this venue like the plague if you genuinely want to have a beautiful and magical day. Doesn't have patch on Cameron House where nothing is too much for the staff....

We just popped in for a drink before going to a gig round the corner. It has a nice feel to it inside like a wine bar. Modern decor. It was quite busy but still managed to get a seat. They have a function room upstairs that was heaving with people. They had a good DJ mixing tracks together. I could easily have settled in for the night. However, they do need to decorate the toilets to the same standard as the rest of the place. A few people were having food. It looked good but we didn't try.

Always good food, good drink, great atmosphere, and wonderful host and hostess. Susan, Tony and all the staff provide a welcoming place to gather in the village. They open their rooms for small business/social groups to meet. They are always ready to pitch in and help support local and national charities through onsite and offsite events. They are a valued gem in our community. My Wife is from Texas and she agrees, they welcome all with a big HOWDY!
