Lovely! One night stay. Room clean and comfortable (perhaps slightly jaded and not enough power outlets). Food superb. Good value.

Parked in the market square opposite & entered via a charming old revolving door. Room was lovely and spacious with a large bed (2 singles). Went onto the balcony, but was forced back inside with the noise of the large industrial extractor vent right above the door! You could still hear this inside and was quite annoying. Went to relax in the bath only to find there was a very loud noise which came on every few minutes, we didn't know if it was a pump, or motor of some kind, but it meant curtailing the bath. Dinner was very nice, as was breakfast, bed was comfy & linens were good. The staff were all lovely, but I wouldn't stay in that room again because of the noise, as the extractor woke me up early the next morning.

Sunday lunch, very nice. SWMBO would have liked it a bit warmer in the restaurant - cold snap not helping those entering 'senior' years.

I would not recommend a stay in this hotel. And here’s why... We walked through the door from the restaurant to go up to our room and immediately we were hit by the smell of old carpets that needed a good, proper clean. The smell got more intense as we went up to the second floor. Our first room was number 9, it was drab, but for £170 b&b for two nights, it wasn’t so bad. Once we closed the door, I did the three things I do in every room I stay in: checked for bedbugs, smelt the pillows and looked under the toilet rim. Fortunately, there was no sign of bedbugs and the pillows smelt clean. That’s where the good fortune ended though, because the toilet rim had urine on it. My husband went down to reception to explain, so they gave him the key to room number 7 for us to view. It was bigger, a little less drab but smelt like it was the special place where wet dogs were sent to dry. The musky, damp dog smell was unbearable. This time, I trekked down to reception myself, to be told there were not any other rooms. I explained that the liquid on the toiled was urine and not yellow toilet cleaner (which is what reception had told my husband it was) and as if by magic, room 3, on the first floor, was suddenly available. Room 3 was bigger, less drab than room 7 and most importantly, didn’t smell of wet dogs. It had clean sheets, but the toilet was still grubby - there were splashes of faeces at the back, and it had not been cleaned round by the fixings that connect the seat and lid to the actual toilet. It was getting late and we'd travelled 2 hours to get there, so we accepted the room as we did not have any other option. On the website, the Advocate Arms Hotel says their rooms “have been awarded 5 stars by the AA, offering the ultimate in comfort and relaxation”. This is incorrect on three points: the rooms are not comfortable, they do not induce relaxation and they do not have 5 stars, awarded by the AA or anyone else. Hotels that genuinely have AA stars awarded to them can be checked online. I checked. The Advocate Arms doesn’t have any. To be fair to the Advocate Arms, they dealt with the situation at the beginning by offering us an alternative room, and then another. But it shouldn’t have taken two bad rooms for us to get a usable room, regardless of the cheap(ish) price we’d paid for bed and breakfast. Their customer service leaves a lot to be desired - we were not offered any kind of compensation for the unpleasantness – not even a drink in the bar, which would have sufficed to apologise for the inconvenience of having to visit multiple rooms before finding one we could sleep in. Also, we were not asked at check-out how we had found our stay. For all these reasons, I do not recommend this hotel.

Very nice place. We stayed for new years eve night. Staff extremely friendly, food very good. They offered food plates instead of meals which u are able to select. Would definitely be going back during the year. No on site parking however there are a few within 200 yards.

We booked rooms with breakfast for one night. Then we expanded it to two nights. The breakfast option was dropped, which we didn't find out until we paid the bill. So we got hit for an extra £40. The"deluxe" room was small and cramped. Our friends also had a deluxe room, it was twice the size of ours, with a balcony. How does THAT work? We won't be back. There are too many other places to stay that are more honest.

Average Hotel nothing to sing about. Small beds and mould on the bathroom tiles. Toothpaste stains where the previous guests had left their tooth brushes on the glass shelves. Breakfast was quite big but certain things came out cold. Would I stay again? Probably.

Wow No wonder this place is dead on a Saturday lunch time. Reserved a table as we havnt visited here for about 4 years. Sat for ten min, waitress came up and asked what we wanted to order - we hadn't even been asked for our drink order . Went for the small plates. 3 for £24 Took about 20 min to arrive. My jaw dropped when it did. I asked the waitress, what is that , pointing at the squid.. portion so small. Squid , hardly any of the plate, and fishy. Underwhelming to say the least. Bao buns Supposed to have Asian slaw on top Not sure where that was Beef brisket croquettes. Hardly any sauce. Meat so dry inside , burnt tasteless leeks on top Stone cold plates to eat off Loudness of the staff joking messing about in the back ground Place is dire. Not great standards .

Disappointed with staff Room for improvement Was told to turn the volume down on my phone whilst on a call to my sick mother because there were ‘other guests dining’ ie 4 other people. Had to go outside to finish my call which I don’t find acceptable given the circumstances Won’t be staying again Wasn’t given a chance to review our stay before we checked out

Stayed 29th May 2024 for 1 night only but an excellent choice. Room large (1), great shower and tidy and neat. Food first class at very reasonable prices and good breakfast also, only slight drawback is no onsite parking but only a minute walk away and certainly didnt detract from the experience and value for money. Would definitely stay again if in the area, first class

Had a really nice 2 night stay here. The rooms are very clean, the beds are nice and comfortable too. Breakfast was cooked fresh to order. Parking is easy as there is a cheap public car park very close by (2 minute walk) We have already booked another 2 night stay for April. I would recommend this pub/hotel.

Great little hotel. I really liked the dinner here, and the service was prompt. They made excellent recommendations for dinner, and I was quite pleased. It was a bit awkward and clumsy lugging my suitcase up 2 flights of stairs as the staircase was quite narrow, but what else would you expect from an 18th-century building. Point is, leave your large luggage in your car if you can. Pictures are from room #7

Popped in for lunch on the off chance on a Monday Afternoon. There was either the option of their extensive Brunch Menu which is served from the morning until 2pm, or a 2/3 Course Set Lunch Menu which was very well priced. My wife had the Three Cheese Bites for Starter, I had the Tomato Soup - Both very hot and tasty . For mains we went with the Turkey and Stuffing Pie and the Cottage Pie - Again hot and appetising, though a slight negative was the sheer volume of mash compared to meat on the Cottage Pie - but at the end of the day, it's a lunch time set menu. The only thing that dented a nice afternoon, was when my wife asked for a Black Americano, it appeared at the table at such speed, a lot of it was in the saucer, and the waitress had vanished before the tide had come back in on the other side of the cup! So my wife had to sit for a few minutes until another waitress appeared so that she could ask for some sugar, which hadn't been offered or presented at the time of the Usain Bolt-esque appearance of the coffee 😂 I'll chalk it down to a quiet Monday afternoon, and us being there towards the end of the shift. Overall, the Advocate has a great reputation locally, and the numerous AA Rosettes on display in the stylish restaurant, are testament to a great place to dine - we have only been twice in 6 years, so will be making more of an effort to return from now on
