I've bought a couple of curry's from alos recently ,the curry sauce is like water, they have put prices up considerably, but are making the poorest curry sauce possible, used to be a really good takeaway, now it seems profit is more important than quality, very disappointed, Andy.

We've been using A LO for around 50 years! Yes, 50 years. Regular, but not frequent visits, we love the place. It's changed hands, but Dear old Kevin the previous owner still does a few shifts on the counter, it's always good to see him. We even remember Kevin's dad when he was boss back in The seventies. The food is still good. Chow mein & curry are our favourites.

My wife and I weren't too hungry and so we ordered a chicken chow mein, a portion of chips and a carton of curry sauce between the two of us. When I rang the order in I was told it would be ready to pick up in 30 min. Although this is at least double the time it would normally take at our usual Chinese takeaway we accepted it because it was a Saturday night and of course it was as stated a different establishment. In order to cut down my waiting time I actually allowed 40 mins before picking it up and the signs were not good when on my arrival I was confronted by a queue stretching around all three walls of the place, plus customers leaning against the counter. On asking for my order I was told it wouldn't be long and I explained I'd already given them forty minutes.. There was an uncomfortable silence as instructions were barked through the hatch to the cooks and all the while the queue was going down extremely slowly. Eventually my order turned up 55 minutes after I'd rang it in but before the gentleman handed my meal over he began literally raking about under the counter for what turned out to be our bag of prawn crackers. When we eventually opened the chow mein at home the look of it was off-putting even before we tasted it. My wife and I both ate a couple of mouthfuls before realising it was the most disgusting thing we'd ever eaten from any Chinese takeaway. After quickly pushing that aside we were hoping there may be a little consolation by opening our chips, curry and prawn crackers.. The chips were OK but the curry sauce was horrible both in taste and texture. Our disappointment didn't end there. Our prawn crackers so carefully selected from under the counter had obviously been lingering there for weeks and were discoloured and inedible. I honestly think that because our order was quite small we were selected the oldest bag of crackers he could find. Why the place was so crowded I just don't understand. Its by a long long way the worst Chinese takeaway I've ever had the misfortune to try. Forget It.. TRY SOMEWHERE ELSE!!

I drive past this unassuming chinese every night and finally thought to stop in and try it out. Honestly, this is the nicest takeaway I've had in YEARS. Piping hot, packed with meat, delicious on every dish. You'd never know if it you looked at the outside, but this is a genuine hidden gem

Decided to give the A.Lo a try after our usual Chinese Takeaway ( Ocean View in Bournmoor ) finally had its last chance. Their service and quality of food has got worse and worse in the last 12 months, culminating in me having to retrun a chicken dish which was still pink in the middle! Even worse, so was the replacement dish which went in the bin. The A.Lo is the opposite. Fast service ( average 10-15 minutes ), very good sized portions, and most importantly - well cooked and tasty food. The fact it's also 15% cheaper than its "competition" doesn't hurt, plus you get complimentary prawn crackers without having to spend a minimum £15 as at the Ocean View. Just wish we'd changed to A.Lo months and months ago ........ certainly it's our takeaway of choice now!

Always been a good Chinese takeaway it recently changed hands and I was worried it might have changed but it hasn't. Meals are very much the same as before. Cooks the best Singapore style chow mein I've ever tasted.

Struggled to find a take away open on a Monday night. A Lo was a chance finding, and the food surpassed expectations. 4 meal for under £25 and well cooked and delicious. Thanks.

Since my first review the takeaway has changed hands, and I am sorry to say the quality of food has deteriorated. In the early days of new owners I gave it the benefit of doubt, but I have noticed a marked decrease in quality to the point where last week I had a char-sui chow mein which was rubbish, the noodles were overdone and the meal quite greasy. Sorry but just lost my custom. Under the old management I would not have hesitated to recommend, but now - well enough said.

Noted no one had left a review for A Lo takeaway, felt compelled to write one. This is an established family chinese takeaway, which I have used for over 40 years and also by my children who are now in their 30's. Never disappointed, excellent quality of food, wide variety of choice of menu, take orders over phone. Have tried other chinese takeways in and around the area, but will say none as good as A Lo, this has to be best in Houghton - le Spring area.

Worst meal ever. Asked for house special curry with fried rice and chicken and pinapple with red rice. No fried rice with the curry and the chicken was a large carton of fried rice with bits of chicken in and 6 pieces of pinapple. Every other time iv got this dish it comes in a sauce, it was as dry as a bone. We always use this place but never again. I phoned to tell them about the missing rice and he just said I read it back to you. £16.20 and most went in the bin.

Food absolutely vile. Special omelette full of grease and water. Just chicken and a couple tiny prawns. Special omelette consists of all meats and is tender juicy . Not just chicken. Gravy was so salty. Never again
