I come here regularly for lunch with my friends, and what an amazing experience it is! There's a great atmosphere!! We would thoroughly recommend it! The staff are brilliant, attentive, and caring, and fun to chat to! The food is always spot on, and there's a great variety of food on the menu, with 'specials' available daily! Delicious! Coffees and teas are super too, and you can buy some yummy cakes and biscuits to take home with you, although you certainly won't feel hungry!

We arrived at 2pm and the owner, Cheryl said that there was no lunches being served but we could have soup or a filled roll. We chose a roll and Lorne and a roll and sausage and the quality of the sausage in both was appalling. Both of us left them, they were so bad. Such a shame because the lady is very friendly and was so kind to a customer with additional support needs. She needs to buy better quality meat, I think.

Being served out of date food and will not go back , the food was minus 0 and was going to complain but there was another customer complaining about there order so I just didn’t bother but I will avoid this unorganised shame of a place

I was in Montrose again a few days ago and I just had to stop in for some early lunch. Like me last visit, I found myself enjoying a fine cup of tea. I also had a filled roll. Ketchup was on hand, as usual, with all the regular condiments. Excellent choices of puddings were offered along with a wide variety of biscuits and cakes. The staff were polite and attentive. Other customers certainly seemed to be enjoying their food too. A couple also had their dog with them and the owner made the 'special guest' welcome, having canine treats on hand! Splendid food was had, a nice drink and at a very respectable price. Totally enjoyed this visit again, and already looking forward to when I could next visit...

We visited A Cup Above twice this week. We found the staff to be welcoming even though we had our dog with us. We had very nice cakes, scones and coffee and Juno had a big bowl of water and a biscuit. The cafe was clean and there was a good choice of home baked goods. Plant milk was also available which was a plus. We would definitely return.

We struggled to find any coffee shop in Montrose. Eventually we had to go in here and noted that it was very quiet. The coffee cups were dirty and the coffee tasted awful. Only accept cash too.

Decided to give this coffee shop a second chance as found the owner to have a terrible attitude the first time we visited. Figured she may just have been having a bad day…WRONG! Went in today to be barked at that it was only coffee & cake available, we only wanted a coffee. Directed to a specific table even though there was only one family in the cafe at the time. Directly outside the toilet so when the the lady with a child wanted in or out I had to move each time to allow her. Coffe was weak and just like a cup of hot milk. Couldn’t even finish it. Another family came in and were told which table to sit at, when they inadvertently got the wrong table they were told to move to the other one in an abrupt and direct manner. Strict cash only policy. Not a relaxing, pleasant experience, definitely a strange vibe. Won’t be back. Felt sorry for the lady who served us who tried hard to be smiley and pleasant. She was the only positive of the whole experience.

Very friendly and accommodating staff, cute wee cafe, soup was delicious! Home baking looked lovely but we were too full! Lovely wee place for a spot of lunch.

I went in to buy a mug of soup to take away. I asked politely to use the toilet and was told no, it is for sit in customers only. I am (very obviously) 7 months pregnant and asked if they could make an exception seeing as I had paid for soup. The server checked with the owner and I was told no. When she passed me I asked her directly, and she aggressively said no again and that there is a sign on the door stating the "rule". I hadn't seen the sign on the way in but noticed it on the way out. Very rude and inconsiderate, it doesn't hurt to be kind to someone. Won't be going back.

Went for lunch today, have been there 5 or 6 times. Firstly their cakes are amazing! Staff and owner are always friendly and welcoming. Food is always hot and freshly made. Had soup, chicken/bacon burger and a pinini & salad. All was amazing and tasted great. Well definitely be back. Look forward to seeing you again, soon.

This place is really cute and quaint. We had a delicious lunch, that was really good value. The soup was so yummy, and the scones were top tier. Staff were lovely too. Would definitely recommend for a light lunch, or a wee coffee and cake.

If I had read the recent reviews I probably would have given this tearoom a miss so glad I didnt. Asked to.use sanitiser when we entered no bad thing covid figures rising again table and chairs had also been cleaned so felt safe. Ordered the lentil soup which was lovely then we shared a fruit scone which was very tasty great value and the staff on duty were both very friendly so no complaints and would call again if back in Montrose

I have visited here frequently over the last 4 years with my little girl and mother-in-law. The service has always been friendly and thorough. This was one of the first places I felt safe taking my young family when we started going out again during the pandemic. The venue is clean and the staff are efficient making sure visitors sanitise their hands and allocating people tables ensuring social distancing guidelines are adhered to. The staff have always been lovely towards my daughter, she is nearly 5 so they have seen her grow over the years. My newborn son also has numerous food intolerances and allergies which while I was breastfeeding, the chef made sure that I had options I could choose from the menu. Which on another point - I felt safe and secure feeding my son here. I'm looking forward to our next visit.

As the owner I was there on this day . My duty manager asked you to put your buggy against the pillar , you chose to sit at table 1 right by the counter . You asked to have a kids meal , which are only for children , so you ordered a small soup and a can of coke , your gran ordered a panini and a tea . I believe the tea was being made as I was bringing the soup through . The panini had already been given to your gran . You took a tantrum when my duty manager would not give you a can of coke to your table . The panini had 2 pieces of bacon in it as every portion is the same , I am the cook so I know what was in it . You brought your buggy over to your table blocking the passage to the counter and endangering your child . My duty manager approached you and asked if you could move the buggy or maybe move to a more suitable table , this was instructed by myself . You both got up very aggressively and started raising your voices and started to leave , I was trying to explain about the buggy situation as you had it where we have hot drinks and food going back and forward . I offered you your meals to take away , you refused . Your gran then wanted to take hers away , which I apologised for the misunderstanding as you said you didn't want anything . Myself and staff try and make everyone that comes into the coffee shop as comfortable as possible , but when customers are rude and can't follow our safety rules , we will not tolerate this . We have health and safety rules for a reason .

I am replying to the mmc333 review in January . I as The owner of the business am sorry you feel this way . I asked you to move your buggy to a place where it was not blocking other tables . I was not in the premises for most of your visit . The child that was in your company was 2 year old and running around touching things , screaming and opening the coffee shop door into a very busy road . You ordered more food and drinks and refused to pay for them . Your behaviour and your friends behaviour were all caught in cctv . I was not shouting and being abusive , you were asked to leave , which you refused . We had a busy coffee shop that day and everyone thought your behaviour was terrible and that myself and staff dealt with the matter appropriately .

The owner is rude and abusive. I will never go there again. From the moment we walked in we sensed a terrible atmosphere. Through out our whole visit the owner was rude to us, then once we had enough of her service we decided to leave. While we were trying to pay our bill she was shouting at us to get out and trying to justify her behaviour towards us. We could not believe what was happening and that an owner of a business would treat her own paying customers like this. The food and coffee was substandard also. Avoid!!!!

Looking for a cup of coffee and maybe a slice of cake, we poked a head arouund their door to ask if our greyhound was allowed ibn. She was welcomed by all of the staff who came over to say hello to her. The lattes were lovely and hot and the cake selection was very good. I had a job deciding eventually on the carrot cake. While in Montrose visiting, came upon this little coffee shop. We had the lunch special of soup and sandwich and tea/coffee. Lovely home made soup and delicious choice of sandwiches. Homemade cakes/ scones are excellent too. Great value for money.

We called in for lunch and were impressed. The sandwiches were good, the service was pleasant and it was a fair price. The staff were good at cleaning and tidying, keeping the place neat and there was a good turnover of people and a nice ambience.

Away used to use this cafe for snacks with friends, I find the rolls not as good quality as the previous manager. The cafe his had a good facelift.

Almorcé hoy aquí y me quedé muy impresionado. Mesas grandes, buen servicio y excelente comida. Pedimos una ensalada con queso panini y jamón ensalada de lado. Zumo de naranja y un chocolate caliente para bebidas. La comida era muy buena y muy bien presentada, especialmente el jamón ensalada que era fantástico y una gran calidad a sólo £4.10. Toda la factura era de £10.30. Sin duda volveremos y lo recomendaría sumamente este lugar.

Mi hija y yo vinimos aquí para el desayuno. Tuve un bollo de tocino, que era principalmente grasas y creo que fue frito. Mi hija tenía un "salchicha roll" que servían como lo que creo que pueden haber sido un Lorne ya que era plana. Mi hija no sólo como Lorne y salchichas carecerán en el menú. Ambos nos acabamos yéndonos. Cuando nos fuimos podía oler el café en nuestra ropa y secador durante todo el día. Absolutamente nada peor! Sin duda no volveré principalmente porque de eso. Conseguir un mejor ventilador y pueden estar tentados a probar los pasteles que realmente parece bien.

Fabulous food but service was a little bit of a let down. Owner had son serving which he clearly was not happy with and they began an argument in the middle of the cafe.

This is the second time we have visited here and would definitely recommend it, excellent home baking.I had a bacon roll and my wife the egg roll and it was very tasty with good quality ingredients, We then had to have a bit of cake each as it all looked so appetising.Next time we are in Montrose we will definitely be stopping here.

Plain decor but staff very friendly and efficient. Good variety of food and beverages on offer and prices very reasonable. French toast and black pudding to be recommended as are the pancakes with bacon and maple syrup. Would definitely pay a return visit.

Whilst on a shopping trip on Thursday in Montrose with my sister, we decided to visit this café for a snack at lunch time. I settled for a roll with sausage and my sister had a roll with black pudding and egg. We both also had mugs of tea. The service was excellent and the food very good. Also very reasonable prices. Will definitely visit this café again.

My parents live near Montrose, and as I was visiting, they decided to take me into town for lunch. They took me here as they had been before, and claimed that you got the best bacon roll here. On arrival (approx 2pm on a Turesday), there were only 2 tables occupied. Whilst all the other tables were clear of cups, plates, etc ... there was still traces of previous occupants ,,,, moisture from cups, crumbs from food, etc. We chose a table, and I wiped the crumbs from it with a tissue.We ordered a bacon roll, scrambled egg on toast and an omlette. We also ordered 2 teas and a coffee. Despite a previous response to a review, we were not asked if we wanted our drinks now or with our food. The drinks were delivered promptly. However, we had to wait around 10/15 minutes for our food. By this time the drinks were more or less finnished. Dad demolished the bacon roll in double quick time, so assume it was indeed the best bacon roll in town. The scrambled egg was fine, although the quantity of egg could have been slightly more for the 2 slices of toast served with it. The omlette was fine, served with salad and toast.After this, we decided to order something for desert. After a few minutes we manages to get the attention of a waitress. She said she would come back to take our order, went and got a cloth and started wiping down tables. Five minutes later she came back and took our order. Strawberry tart and a sundae. Tart was promptly delivered, although a 5 minute wait for the sundae. Quality of deserts were excellent. As the title of this review says - the food was pretty good, and certainly excellent value for what you get. It was unfortunate that the service was so slow. There appeared to be one girl working the 'floor' and she took orders and cleared tables. She appears to be in need of supervision for a couple of weeks to bring her up to speed. Having worked in service, I know that one of the most simple things (never enter or leave a kitchen with your hands empty) was not being followed.It is a fabulous little place, and whoever owns it has a great business idea. However, they perhaps need to take a step back and look at the nitty gritty. Customer service, or at least service with a smile should be instilled in staff. Whilst I would go back next time I am in Montrose, I could understand why others would perhaps go elsewhere.

I visit this cafe several times a week. Staff and owners are wonderful, always make me feel welcome, like an old friend. The food is all freshly cooked and the sweets are yummylicious! I cannot fault this place at all and always look forward to my next visit. When people ask me which cafe to go to in Montrose, this is the place I direct them to.

We have eaten at this delightful cafe before and were there again today. My husband had the breakfast and told the lady, Debbie, that it was the 'best breakfast in the North East' Praise indeed as he does tend to try breakfasts in different places that we go. I had the chicken and pepper omelette, which came with a side salad and toast and was really tasty and filling. My husband then had a white coffee and Victoria sponge and I had a green tea & lemon, I wasn't going to have cake, but the cakes are so fresh and look so good that I couldn't resist and I ended up having the Victoria sponge also, which was just perfect. The cafe was busy and the very pleasant waitress managed everyone's orders with ease. A lovely cafe with fresh made to order food. Would recommend you try.

Had a lovely light lunch with Panini's, filled rolls, coffee and cakes here. Everything was delicious, freshly cooked and the staff were very friendly. Thought the prices were very reasonable at £4.25 for a delicious Panini served with crisps and side salad and £2.20 for a really large slice of homemade lemon meringue pie or carrot cake so don't know where the other reviewer that thought it was pricey eats! Will definitely visit again when in the area.

I came across this Lovely café in Montrose whilst visiting Friends and Family over the Christmas Holidays, I had a Caramel Latte and a Mozzarella, Basil, pesto and Tomato Panini, both of which were excellent. The staff were very friendly and the shop had a lovely atmosphere to it I will definitely be back when visiting Montrose again. P.S I highly Recommend the Caramel Latte it was delicious .....

As locals we decided to try this cafe as the coffee shop across the road was very busy, wish we had waited in the queue! Both my husband and I had soup,both tasted like dishwater! Also ordered coffee which arrived about 10 mins before the soup so it was cold by the time we had finished the soup so never even tried a cake which I was looking forward too. Won't be going back in a hurry!!

Wanted a flat white coffee and got looked at like I had two heads...I had to tell them what it was!!?? If you don't know what a flat white is then why do you have a coffee machine and a cafe called "a CUP above the rest".. Plus the bacon roll was a shocking £3.95....!!!! It's only £1.95 across the road. Having read the "half shot" comment I'm so glad I'm not the only one who was treated like this!!! The Cafe&Bistro across the road is the only place I would recommend that you try for all coffees and you won't get looked at like you have two heads!!

In response to what can only be described as a "rant" below (from the coffee experience), I was in the cafe during said visit and only saw the waitresses being nothing but polite to this couple as they were rude and shouted at the staff! In fact, others in the cafe were shocked at how aggressive this man was when entering the shop! There was no politeness as indicted by his wife, who at the time looked affronted at her husbands behaviour! Please do not be put off by this. A cup above is a warm, friendly cafe with very bubbly staff who are only to happy to see you!!!

Stopped in for lunch and had their steak sandwich, which came with a side of salad and crisps. I had a herbal tea and a lovely piece of home made cake to follow and it was all delicious. The staff are lovely and friendly and nothing is too much trouble. I would recommend you try A Cup Above if you have not tried it already as it is a hidden gem of a place.

We have just come back from a two weeks' trip to Scotland, and this café was the only one of the many places we visited where we were not treated with utmost friendliness and hospitality. Overall, we were so impressed by Scotland that this incident was all the more unpleasant, because we were treated in a way we have never experienced before. But let's start at the beginning:On our way from Aberdeen to Dundee we needed a coffee, snack and toilet very badly, so we decided to stop at this place. We were only allowed to park for half an hour at one of the parking spaces in the town centre but we thought that would be plenty of time for what we wanted. Upon entering, the interior of the café looked really nice and cosy, so we decided to stay. To the front of the place there is a counter with coffee machine and cakes behind, so at first we thought it was self service and my husband went to the counter to order. An elderly woman who looked quite stressed came out of the kitchen with some plates, saw him there and informed him it was table service. So far so good. After a short wait, the same woman arrived at our table with pencil and notepad to take our order. Firstly, we ordered two flavoured lattes and my husband asked her to please make them with only half a shot of espresso, a term quite a few waiters had used during our stay in Great Britain, and we ourselves so far had never had problems in being understood when we used it. As she looked puzzled, he added that we wanted our coffees very weak and therefore it should be not as much espresso as usual. She wrote this down very carefully, and as I wanted to order a scone on top, she interrupted me and asked to wait until she had finished, as she normally worked in the kitchen but the regular waitress had gone out for a while. I let her finish and then ordered the scone again, which she noted as well. While doing this, the looked around nervously and asked herself loudly when her colleague finally would be back. This moment, the door opened and her younger colleague arrived and the elder one placed our order on the counter for her to carry it out. Obviously, the younger waitress was the one dealing with the beverages and cakes behind the counter, while the other one did the cooking in the kitchen. The younger waitress started to serve other people standing at the counter and chatting with them. Overall, she was slower then any waitress I have seen before, and above all, completely uninterested in the guests. She didn't look at us at all and finally took our order from the counter to start with our lattes. When after a long wait they arrived, the first sip told us that something had gone wrong. If this was the weak latte, we didn't want to know what the normal one was like, as ours was very strong and there was no trace of flavour at all. As our waitress had vanished into the kitchen minutes before and we were on our own again, my husband went to the kitchen and explained polity that we had asked for half a shot of espresso only but nevertheless got a very strong one. She answered that she must have misunderstood her colleague's notes and had thought that we wanted an extra shot both. No wonder the latte was so strong. Okay, such things can happen, so we still stayed patient, although we thought that our order had not been such a difficult one and what's the point of writing everything down in detail if it is misinterpreted afterwards anyway?After quite a while, our waitress returned to our table and muttered something like "all right, I will pour these out" while leaving, without even looking at us. She went into the kitchen, came back with a small jug of hot milk, slammed it on our table and vanished into the kitchen again. It dawned on us that she didn't plan to make new lattes but would just pour out a sip of our now cold lattes, which she expected us to fill up with the hot milk. However, this doesn't make a strong coffee weaker as the amount of coffee powder is already in and can't be taken out again. On top of that, we had ordered an expensive flavoured latte and the flavour had been already weak before so we didn't want to know what it would taste like after this new "treatment".Due to the insolent behaviour of the waitress we were not patient any more and realised that politeness was a language she didn't understand. So after arriving with our glasses, of which she had indeed only poured out a few sips, my husband told her quite firmly that these were not the coffees we had ordered and explained again what we wanted and that we didn't want what she had offered us instead. She simply said "I don't understand what you want" and started to ignore him. All right, we are foreigners, but I think this review makes clear that apart from the few typical mistakes you make if English is not your mother tongue, we are able to make ourselves understood. We lived two years in England and also during our trip to Scotland this was the only place people "did not understand" us. She made quite clear that in fact she didn't want to understand and didn't want to deal with complaints. The elderly waitress was a bit nicer and intervened as my husband now became a bit louder and this treatment of guests was certainly not casting a good light on them. She asked him to explain everything again. By that time we became convinced that nobody could be that stupid and that they simply didn't want to make us new coffees. On top of that, there had been no scone at all, the second little part of our order. At last, probably to avoid any more trouble, the younger waitress condescended to agree to make us a new coffee. A glance at our watch showed us that we were running out of time. To our horror we realised that the waitress started to serve other guests again instead of rushing to make our lattes. After five more minutes we had to return to our car and left there really angry and without lattes or scone. I have rarely seen a person that stupid and arrogant at a time. You don't feel like a guest but like a nuisance. So if you can, avoid this place. It's the only way people will learn that there is more to a café then a nice decoration. I only hope that this will happen to herself one time when she is in a foreign country, tired from travelling and longing for a hot coffee and a snack. Maybe she will remember us then and feel a bit sympathetic.
