42nd East Bakehouse in East Riding of Yorkshire

The seating and floors are dirty which isn’t pleasant to sit and relax amongst. The food is average - had some good cookie dough bits in the past but had a very stale croissant which wasn’t edible and the cup my drink was in smelt off. Always come away smelling of burnt food as there doesn’t seem to be ventilation. Don’t think I’ll be back

Paid £6.50 for express delivery. Order did not arrive on time and no communication received. After several attempts to contact the shop, they responded 6 days later advising my order was delayed due to a delay of boxes! Was offered no refund, only offered discount on my next order. This is the second occasion it has happened with an online order. I had to purchase a last minute birthday cake! Cannot justify paying express delivery and receiving order 7 days later… poor communication and customer service.

My husband ordered the £20 half dozen cookies for our daughter’s birthday. She didn’t want a birthday cake, just the cookies. He ordered them 5 days before the day but it’s now 9 days since he ordered & no cookies, no updates no contact at all. He’s emailed multiple times & hasn’t heard anything. Left a message on Facebook & they deleted that. If they’re not able to do their job someone should’ve contacted him. So her birthday was very sad. No cake, no cookies (that she was so looking forward to) & more importantly no communication (after paying for express delivery). I cannot comment on the food ect as it just didn’t turn up.! Every day she’s asked if we’ve heard anything & everyday we have to tell our child that the one thing she wanted for her birthday is probably not going to turn up & no one is giving updates or at the very least return the money. This is very unprofessional & unfortunately it looms like it’s happening to a few people. 100% would NOT reccomend this company.

Ordered 6 cookies for my daughters birthday on August the 25th. I paid for express delivery and thought they would arrive by her birthday which was August the 30th. Unfortunately they still have not arrived and it's now September the 3rd. I have left them multiple messages, but they seem to be ignoring me. I even left a comment on the Facebook page which has been deleted. Very disappointed!

Amazing food, full of flavour but slightly pricey, which you expect for what it is your buying. Situated in a quieter area of bev the ship is bright, airy and open with plenty of seating options.

Used to be such a lovely little place to visit. In the last several months it has gone downhill, with disinterested staff, poor quality food and with a counter that looks bare and slightly run down. Quite sad really as it used to be 5* I think they are too busy making sure the cafe they run in the South works better ... you've forgotten your core customers who helped make your business thrive in the first place. Feels like greed has overtaken care and quality.

It is a wonderful place to stop for a really good coffee and a sweet treat fix. Loved the interior, and the atmosphere was so calm and relaxing. Staff were lovely and super helpful. Will definitely be back!

Got cookies and brownies takeaway and they were delicious ! I would recommend adding more tables and chairs, we planned to stay in but 2 tables were full and 3 tables had stuff on it, so we decided to take away. I would recommend 👌

We went for a quick coffe and cake on mother's day in st stephens, only to be turned away at the door even though there were empty tables, since when did you have to book to go into a bakery. Business like this wont last if this is how they treat customers. Wont be coming back,

Thought we’d drop in for a coffee, no one waiting behind us in queue, person behind counter said she couldn’t serve us because she had to prepare some food dishes and would be a while ????????

Awful! 1) I booked a reservation over a week ago and we weren’t on the list. 2) No table numbers so we kept being given other people’s orders. 3) drinks took way too long to prepare and serve and when they did bring them out the server couldn’t tell us what they were to allocate them to the person who ordered. 4) tables were tiny so we had to put vases etc on the floor just so we had space to put 2 drinks and 2 plates. 5) sausage and bacon sarnie has not that many ingredients to it so you wouldn’t expect them to forget to add sausage 🙄 6) the server came to check everything was ok with our food and I had to point at the table and tell him half the meals were missing. 7) still 1 meal missing when the first two of the party had finished their food, had to chase it up to be told they didn’t have the ingredients to make the item, why did we have to chase the food to be told this? Were they planning on just leaving the ticket all day until we got fed up and left? 8) lady who was doing the refund (which I haven’t yet received but to be fair today is Sunday so I appreciate this may take a few days) snapped at my friend after a comment was made by the table next to ours and had nothing to do with us at all! All in all it was disorganised chaos and quite embarrassing! My son was getting his train back home at 1pm and so we thought a booking at 10.45 would be enough, it wasn’t! He didn’t get fed so I had to go next door and get him a greggs!

Review for 42nd East Bakehouse St. Stephen’s I don’t feel the need to write reviews very often but I hope the owner will see this and take it as constructive criticism. Let me start by saying the food is okay but expensive (£8.75 for a sausage and bacon sandwich) - everything else is in serious need of improvement. The layout of the place doesn’t work. There’s just bench seating round the edge and loose chairs dotted around. There are tiny tables that are way too low to eat from (imagine small coffee/side tables about 50cm across). This means there’s not enough space for 2 people to have a drink and food on the same table. Where are the ‘normal’ cafe/bistro style tables? The menu is trying to be too minimalist with not enough description of each dish (don’t get me started on the lack of any dishes with eggs at a brunch establishment!!). Ordering is done at the counter (although you’re not told this when arriving and could be made obvious by putting it on the menu) and there’s no table numbers which causes a problem for the staff. The service can best be described as chaotic. We waited over 30 minutes for some simple food which came with items missing (no sausage in the ‘sausage and bacon’ sandwiches). Why don’t they bring the drinks first whilst they’re preparing your food? One item didn’t arrive at all and the staff didn’t seem to know what to do (as I said - chaotic!). After a bit of discussion we got a refund. We were so hoping to have a great experience but were let down by the disorganised staff. It felt like the place had opened before it is ready. It reminded me of one of those tasks on the Apprentice where they set up a ‘pop up’ place (this one by the losing team where someone got fired). The problems could be solved with a little organisation, staff training, slightly rejigged menu and some better furniture. Not sure we’ll go back again though which is a shame as it could be a really nice place with a little improvement. There’s a Greggs next door which whilst not as tasty is better value for money and way more efficient. 42nd East Bakehouse in St Stephen’s needs to up its game if it’s going to survive against the competition on its doorstep.

Went in for dinner, got asked twice what our order was, brought us 3 different tables orders. One of our meals came early Luke warm with no butter for the bread, outstanding order was brought 10, minutes later. Breakfast had no flavour. Very poor for a £30 order. No organisation, tables were too small and low to eat from. Not stable enough to cut sausages on. Will not be back sadly.

Never have I had to wait 25 mins for a cup of coffee!! They forgot to make my lunch and the staff seem clueless. Everyone was complaining. After waiting 40 mins for my toast, it was very tasty but not worth the hassle. Will not be going back.

Visited the St Stephens Store, i waited 40 minutes for my coffee, the food followed shortly after. The food is nice but its just far to slow

The coffee was luke warm, and took over 20 mins to arrive , no other customers to serve (4 other customers who had already been served when I entered. The ‘toast’, had a layer of grease on the bottom which had solidified, could not cut through it. The lady in charge was not bothered, she tried to cut through it too, but couldn’t….her answer …it’s sour dough….very disappointing attitude

Terrible place. Ordered a bottle of water, tea and 2 cookies. We waited a very long time. When I asked where our order was, it looked like they had already forgotten about it. They brought a glass of water, but we ordered water in a bottle. The glasses are dirty, it smells like coffee and it’s not pleasant to drink. Had just 1 cookie. Absolutely disgusting .We go to different places and usually I don’t pay attention to how busy the employees are, but there is absolutely no organization and the dishes are dirty.Definitely don't recommend.

Popped in yesterday. Ordered two hot drinks and 3 sweet items. Waited 35 minutes, food and drinks still hadn't arrived. We had to leave due to a booking. I asked for the items to be taken away and the hot drinks refunded. Lady apologised for the long wait. Said she would add an extra cookie for the long wait and refunded me for the hot drinks. The bag only contained two of items I had paid and for and I'm still waiting for my refund for the hot drinks. Such a shame. It was so disorganised.

Perfect experience in every way shape and form; a gorgeous settling; amazing coffee and always exceptional service, from daisy especially.

Visited St. Stepehens in Hull Very disappointed to say the least, considering this place was recommended to us. Tables dirty and not cleaned. Not enough tables and seating in the premise, considering the floor space given. Table was cleared, however the tables were not wiped down leaving spilt liquid on them throughout our stay. We ordered a number of milkshakes at almost £6 a head, and was shocked at the lack of finesse and presentation of them. Served in thin Plastic cups with a straw 3 qtrs filled with milkshake. No fresh cream or toppings as would be expected. Very underwhelmed by the experience. All the other dishes served around us looked great and value for money, I just think that more effort could have been put into these drinks including presentation. Even the fresh orange juice was served better in glass jars. I am all for local businesses, but can't help feel that we could have spent less on a better product elsewhere.

Daisy and evie are fantastic. Always a lovely atmosphere when you walk in. Even when there rushed of there feet the quality doesn't suffer.

Had the biscoff cookie was excellent with flat white coffee. Very nice and cosy spacious. Keep up the great work!!

Lovely staff. Great place. Very nice atmosphere. The service was ok. I can see this place going far and being successful.

Myself and my husband attended the bake school today and we had the most amazing time. Everything was perfect. Phoebe was absolutely brilliant and made us feel so welcome, nothing was too much and she really made it such an enjoyable experience for us. We have already told so many of our friends and family about our experience. We will 100% be booking again in the future. The bake school would be an incredible gift for your nearest and dearest or just as a date with loved ones and friends.

This is a great find and as a result it's very popular. Beside the range of coffee, tea and hot chocolate with a bake item you can get breakfast and brunch including pastries, toast, pancakes and toast/baguette with avocado, mushroom, mozzarella and other toppings. Booking is recommended.

Coffee was decent, cakes are nice if you enjoy oversized sweet stuff but the muddy floors and bar full of used pots waiting to be cleaned didn't really help the atmosphere. Would probably take out if I went back.

Me and my friends were sat waiting 42 minutes for two milkshakes and a hot chocolate. Whilst waiting we witnessed someone’s brownie order come wrong, a couple be served with drinks and brownies before us and when we asked for a refund they weren’t even aware of the drinks we had ordered so they had not even started. The reason given to us was because the coffee employee wasn’t in … we didn’t order coffee so not sure why this would impact us. We were late for our train and it ruined our entire day!

Lovely friendly staff but expensive.

If you have a sweet tooth this place is definitely for you. Sweet, but not too sweet!! They have a wonderful selection of perfectly baked extra thick cookies, I had the ginger cookie 😋 and it was absolutely amazing, my wife had a chocolate orange one and was equally impressed. They also sell a range of sandwiches pancakes and brownies which all look amazing. The last thing to mention and perhaps the most important is the coffee is without doubt the best coffee I've had in a very long time. I drink a lot of coffee, and from all over the world and this place has it spot on. So great food, amazing coffee and really nice staff. What more could you ask for in a coffee shop 😋😋😁😁👍🏻👍🏻

Amazing experience today. I biked here today from Hull after a work colleague suggested it. They made sure my journey back home on a push bike with 4 cakes was fine by packing it with more parchment paper. And they made it back just how I left there thanks.. Definitely going again. They're awesome!!

We used to go here quite often, however we think this will be the last time for us. The portion sizes have decreased dramatically and the taste of the cakes aren't as good. We understand that costs are increasing, but for the price, it is no longer worth it for us.

Very expensive for what you get! Just bought two Pulled Pork buns for £8.50 each to find they were just some pork in a very tiny bun. That’s it. Rip off.

Visit the Cotswold stores but stumbled across the Beverley branch on a work visit Just as superb, wonderful staff and friendly, helpful and great coffee! definitely the best in the town.

My partner ordered 3 of the deep dish cookies online for delivery. They were wrapped really well and were a decent size. The toppings were nice but the cookie dough had no flavour which ruined the taste of the whole cookie. I wouldn’t order again based on the base having no flavour

Amazing sweet bakes. Exceptional quality with an excellent choice. Hardest part is deciding what to have! They also had a good selection of vegan bakes, made to the same high standard. Very friendly and helpful service. Definitely recommend. Oh, and dog friendly too!

Just had a had a hot chocolate which was lacking in chocolate. Told the member of staff behind the counter but she only shrugged her shoulder's!!

Wouldn't even give 1 star. Rubbish customer service and just rude to be honest. Ordered one of their half a dozen boxes as a gift for who had just given birth. We sent it via postal delivery as they really liked the cakes from here but don't have one nearby. However, upon delivery it was missing one of the 6 we had ordered, only 5 in the box. To make matters worse what we ordered wasn't what they received. Tried to resolve this with their customer support through various emails/social media and no reply apart from once asking my order number to then never be heard from again. This was back in September when we placed the order. It is now the following year without our money back or an apology or explanation. Don't waste your money because you won't get what you paid for clearly.

This place does the most amazing sweet treats! More expensive than other bakeries but generous portions. Coffees are great too. Now open for brunch which we’re yet to try but looking forward to visiting again soon!

Very disappointed, would not recommend to anyone! If I could give them a 0 I would. I ordered 3 cookie dough pots which cost £21, obviously I was expecting a lot not only from the price but what the reviews have said. We have had the cookie dough tubs before and would always go on about how amazing it tasted, this time wasn't the case. The portion size is now tinny compared to what it use to come in, it wasn't full to the top (what you would expect paying £7), it had no chocolate chips in and the most important things from this is the taste. I have never tasted something so revolting, you can definitely tell the quality has gone and they are now using cheaper ingredients. I have complained on their Facebook page, due to them not having an email address, I still have not heard anything back which is disgraceful. I would honestly not go back and would tell everyone the same, over priced and the quality is shocking!

I’ve been excited to try this place after walking by multiple times. Finally dropped by with family and we bought two bueno cookies, a red velvet cookie dough cake / pie slice, and an Oreo one. Unfortunately it was way too sweet for any of our liking. None of us managed to finish as it was too sickly in the end. Desserts seem like they have way too much butter and sugar.

Great coffee. Had a croissant sandwich of pesto/tomato/cheese/salad and the ingredients were fresh and tasty. Top customer service as well

Disappointed Thoroughly disappointed. Preorder in early March for Easter goodies which didn’t arrive til after the bank hol. They tried to blame the lateness on DPD however I spoke with FOUR separate senior management members who assured me the parcel was not handed to them in good time. However, even if it was, the customer service I’ve had has really been something else. No apologies, no sign of dissatisfaction that their customer would be let down, receive products late and products that won’t be fresh. And mostly, zero compassion. I’ve had anorexia and I’m currently unemployed due to redundancy so £30 on cakes is a BIG DEAL, I told them this and they ignored it. Yet they have a ‘good mood club’?? I got zero good moods from this order. When I eventually received my parcel the Easter egg was broken - I’d expected that. But the cookie dough was rock solid, totally stale. The Malteasers Biscoff Cookie Doughnut I ordered had no sign of malteasers and was no bunny included like the photo. Even though it’s the product that’s of subpar quality they still won’t refund me, instead consistently choosing to blame the courier. All in all I’m beyond disappointed and haven’t received a refund nor apology. I supported this business for many years, sharing a lot and shouting a lot about their products on social media. This instance is the SECOND time I’ve had a bad experience with them. So I warn you if you’re ordering online to be careful.

If Beverley is a lovely & "sweet" place, the 42nd East Bakehouse is its Capital ;-) Friendly service, very good selection of coffees & teas, and BEST homemade lemonade I had in ages! And of course, we had to try as many cakes/biscuits/cookies as we could: please see pictures, and please don't judge, we have all been "there" ha ha

An amazing bakery!! Served by 2 friendly ladies, had a flat white and a hot choc, both were delicious!! The pancakes are to die for and we'll worth the money...had a Nutella croissant and that too was amazing, wouldn't think to mix the 2. After we had to get more things to take home with us...will definitely be back soon for more delicious food!!

This place is an absolute liability to anyone who has allergies. The first time we ordered we requested twice for a box of bakes with no white chocolate due to allergies. When we opened the box at home everything either contained or was covered in white. I vowed never to eat anything from here again. However, my hubby came in tonight with a box and said don’t worry I asked at the counter for no white chocolate due to allergies. He brings the baked home, we cut into them and it’s all full of white chocolate…

An amazing bakehouse in an excellent location in Beverley! The sweets were all amazing, the taste was absolutely fantastic, the portion was way bigger than I could eat (and I usually eat a lot) and the prices very reasonable! The staff were very friendly and happy to help and explained everything we needed. The store was also very clean and tidy. The only thing I would recommend is to use utensils to grab the sweets, as the particular member of staff handled the previous customer's cash and then moved on to pick up my order with the same gloves, which was very unprofessional, especially with the whole covid situation.

One of the best dessert shops. The peanut butter oreo brownies are sooo delicious and not overly sweet. I highly recommend it

So I had one of the savoury croissant sandwiches, and it was absolutely delicious. But, I also had a bite of this mars nutella cookie thing, and I felt like it shouldn't exist because it's too good. At first, I thought I was dreaming, because nothing in this world can come close to how good it tasted. But then when I realized I wasn't dreaming, I concluded that it must come from another dimension. I'm surprised the deliciousness hasn't created a black hole and ripped apart space and time yet

Cycle touring through.... Triple chocolate brownie..... And a few other things for later. I did feel a bit sick after the brownie, But that's because I'd also scoffed a fatt burger and chips from down the road. And had a brew. Nom nom nom. It was hard to get back on the bicycle. Later on at our campsite we shared a biscuit Nutella cake looking thing. Heaven. But it put me in a wheelchair for a few hours. Hmmm passing through in a few more days.

This is my new little place of heaven, if ever you wish to treat your self this is the place to come

Super friendly and helpful staff. We arrived 30 minutes early for our booked table, no problem. As most people were eating outside as it was a beautiful day.Food was well prepared and mostly tasty. One friend had the gammon steak was massive & tasted as good as it looked. Another had the chicken, again a good size & tasty. My wife had the Ploughman's, this was one of the better Ploughman's I have seen in a long time. A good choice of three cheeses, ham, pickles etc. Wonderful value. Myself I had the steak pie with chips. The pie was full of meat and also mushrooms which wasn't mentioned in the pie discription. Also it lacked any taste, not sure why? Under seasoned no idea. Plus the smallest meal. Would we return, oh yes. Next time I will have the gammon or try the salmon. Also no desserts available. Which was a shame.
