The Whitebrook Restaurant

Trellech United, Monmouthshire
11/12/2018: I had booked Whitebrook on the back of seeing Chef Chris Harrod on the Great British Menu and loved his approach to foraging and the use of unusual ingredients. My partner and I booked a Saturday night and a room so that we could include the wine flight with our meal. After a bit of a mix up with the room we got settled in and went for dinner.
10/12/2018: We haven’t visited here for a while so were really looking forward to it. We weren’t disappointed. We chose the Tasting Menu with Wine Flight and it was excellent a delight in every mouthful. A perfectly balanced menu offering a great selection of tastes and flavours. My husband swapped his venison for the signature dish of suckling pig which was a very special dish. The pre-dessert was a wonderful pallet cleanser and the dessert was not sweet but just delicious with amazing textures. Staff were lovely and attentive. We couldn’t fault it and will definitely come back soon.

07/11/2018: We visited Abergavenny for the day and came across Cwtch Cafe around lunchtime. The food is lovely, as are the drinks and the staff are pleasant. All in all, we spent a very nice hour, sat by the window, eating, drinking and watching the world go by.

Usk Garden Centre

Usk, Monmouthshire
26/11/2018: This is definately one of my favourite places to eat! The Sunday lunch myself and my family had was beautiful. The meat and vegetables were cooked to perfection and there was plenty of gravy for everyone. The staff are so friendly and the service was excellent. Great value for money. Highly recommended. We'll be back soon!
23/11/2018: They seem to have got in a decent staff of dinner-lady types to produce the canteen style roast dinners on weekends. They have worked out how to neatly portion the roast potatoes inside the Yorkshire puddings - along side 2 decently thick slabs of roast beef.

The Crown

Mardy, Monmouthshire
11/12/2018: Always a pleasure to visit, the hosts are always very welcoming and the food excellent. This is a pub serving very good restaurant food with prices towards the top end of midrange. We keep going back for more.
06/12/2018: Had a lunch here today with four art group friends and it was Wonderful. Had the 'Fish Special' main course of Scallops with Black Pudding on a sauce of Cauliflower puree with fondant potatoes - heavenly! Then Pannetone Bread and Butter Pudding with icecream which was delicious. Staff are attentive and friendly. Can't wait to go there again on the 29th December

The Raglan Arms

Raglan, Monmouthshire
14/12/2018: Six of us lunched here on 12 Dec. Menu choice was extensive. We had Pork Belly, Fish Pie, Rack of Lamb and Beef Brisket. All concluded that it was pretty good, well presented and in nice surroundings. Puddings were very good too. Downside was restaurant was cold despite an open fire which was hardly alight. Drinks expensive.
04/12/2018: Fantastic lunch, the main course was so good we all had to have dessert, and we weren't disappointed. All food was freshly prepared, beautifully presented and great value. We'll be back!

Millers Arms

25/11/2018: We booked this after seeing some meals come out when we stopped here in the summer for a beer. Between us we tried the pork, beef and lamb roast Sunday dinners. Absolutely lovely, good amount of perfectly cooked meat, Yorkshire pudding, roast and new potatoes with some mouth-watering gravy. Served with a nice selection of vegetables and sauces.

Cinnamon Tree

Priory, Monmouthshire
22/10/2018: And a good takeaway, too. Generous and tasty food that went down a treat. Took about 20 minutes on a quiet Sunday to prepare, so that was fine also.
21/10/2018: Such friendly staff, excellent menu and very tasty results. Even on a Sunday evening there was a steady stream of takeaways and surprises there....bravo thank you.

The Black Bear Inn

Llanover, Monmouthshire
06/11/2018: Many thanks to Ruth, Mike, Mark, Dafydd
02/11/2018: We had been told that we would not regret going here for an evening meal and to book a table. There was a lovely wooden fire burning away as we entered the warm atmosphere of a small local pub. We were welcomed by the owner at the bar and shown the blackboards with the starters and main dishes. I can recommend the Butty Bach on draft for any real ale drinkers - very nice. We were given an appetiser - very nice. A bottle of chablis which was very reasonable priced. Starters - french onion soup and thai fish cakes - both very tasty. We both had lamb shank, boiled new potatoes and creamy leeks - the meat just fell off the bone and plenty of it. The eton mess was very tasty made with blackcurrants and the coconut meringue pie was ok, the portion size was too small (the only thing of the evening which was disappointing). The service was very good, very friendly and made you feel welcomed.

The Rose and Crown

St. Arvans, Monmouthshire, <20£
25/11/2018: We found this pub by accident on a walk. We were hungry so had a burger. It was really good, much better than anticipated and great value. We’d have gone back if we’d had time. Highly recommend
25/11/2018: A decent pub for a drink and the food also looked good. Dog friendly in the bar area. Cash only under £10 which is a bit inconvenient these days.

White Hart Village Inn

Llangybi Fawr, Monmouthshire, 20-30£
18/12/2018: Visited this beautiful country pub establishment. All decorated beautifully and very seasonal, we sat on a lovely little table by the roaring fire. We started with the mussels and expected a small portion I was extremely happy when a brimming bowl of steaming mussels arrived, they were cooked perfectly and were fantastic the mains were equally as delightful. Very reasonably priced and the hospitality was incredible and we have decided to visit again to try out more of the menu - definitely somewhere to dine if you are in the area.many thanks to the very friendly staff
09/12/2018: I read the reviews and expected a good experience. The service was somewhat slow but the main meal was good. However, the sweets were a disaster. We ordered apple tart to be presented with microwaved pastry, which was obviously then soft, and a small amount of custard which had obviously come from a tin and was likewise microwaved. In addition no one could find any real apple. The bread and butter pudding was a very small portion, again microwaved and the only thing to suggest it was bread and butter pudding in the first place was the presence of a couple of sultanas. At £5.90 a desert the quality was very poor. All this said, the place has a lot of character and the surroundings were very pleasant. There was even someone playing the piano as you dined. Overall we could be tempted to go back again but would certainly not bother having deserts.

Afternoon Tea at the Angel

Grofield, Monmouthshire
26/11/2018: The hotel is lovely with very large rooms, and the location is very convenient. The staff are very friendly and helpful. High tea is one of the best I have had. Highly recommended.
21/11/2018: The room in which we had tea was lovely light and inviting. The staff serving were very professional and courteous. The food was great. light delicious and well presented. We could not finish it all so had a box of lovely cakes to bring home. I would recommend this experience and it would make a great special or Christmas present.

Lion Inn

Trellech United, Monmouthshire
13/12/2018: We called in for a late lunch after a morning shopping in Monmouth. What a find! I had the duo of game - excellent quality meat which was cooked to perfection - while my husband had the pie with Trellech tattles, which were delicious. Both meals were freshly cooked to order and served by the very friendly staff. We will definitely return next time we're in the area.
08/12/2018: Had lunch there again as we were in the area. It has an extensive menu of home cooked food .We chose from the lighter menu, it was excellent and quite filling , I had the lasagna and my husband had scampi both served with chips and salad.
