Dishoom Shoreditch

Haggerston, Hackney, 20-30£
18/05/2020: Bar is very stylish. Great ambience for cocktails. Food served is a modern take on Bombay cafés. The black daal especially, is excellent.
30/03/2020: Stopped by for lunch with my girlfriend, we had to wait due to how busy it was but it was so worth it. The staff helped recommend some great cocktails whilst we waited, once we were seated we had the most amazing food. The place looks beautiful and the staff were really friendly!

Sitio totalmente recomendable.
09/03/2020: Best place in Broadway Market. Fresh, varied and well executed menu in one of the best spots on the street. Dog friendly too 👏🏼

Dilara

Brownswood, Hackney
31/12/2019: Whilst looking like yet another kebab shop the restaurant towards the back is large and welcoming smiles from staff set the tone. The food, choosing the Uyghur options was delicious, freshly cooked as we waited. The three of us had three dishes and shared so we could taste more. My only regret is that we do not live nearer! We left happy and full and embarrassed at paying a little less than £30 including a huge pot of tea.

Buen Ayre

Queensbridge, Hackney
30/03/2020: The moment social distancing and isolation are over, Buen Ayre is the first place I'll visit. The food and wine is always delicious and the service top notch.
03/03/2020: This cozy restaurant is situated in the heart of London Fields not to far from Bethnal Green. I had a fanstastic rib eye steak . Incredible meat and generous portions. They also have good selection of Malbec and the price are average. I don’t give 5 stars because the service wasn’t great, the waiter didn’t give us a nice welcoming and he looked a bit unhappy when see us walking trough the door plus he was pushing us to get the order after 2 minutes that we were sitting on the table. For all the rest everything was delicious

The Clove Club

Haggerston, Hackney
04/06/2020: The short version: This is the best restaurant I have ever been. I love to eat. Food can be a horrible part of any travel, or it can make the memories of travel even sweeter. My girlfriend and I visited this restaurant three years ago and we still talk about it, still compare it to every restaurant we go, still smile with the memory of the food, the servers and the busboy. We've been to many, many great restaurants since, but none compares (others have been in the area, but not close). We didn't visit in July 2019 as stated below, but July 2017.The long version: Three years ago, my girlfriend was diagnosed with breast cancer and she would have to go through surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. I love to travel and have done so, but she had very little experience with travel of any sort. London is my go-to town for fun and a bit of adventure (but not typically for food, though that has been changing in the last ten years or so). She was allowed a break between the surgery and the chemo, so when she healed and felt well enough, we made our way to London. It was a great two weeks. We ate great food, saw great shows (the Ferryman was spectacular). It was everything I could have hoped for for the woman I love to look back on while going through the rigors of chemo to remember good times and to give her hope and strength. I did not think that our meal at the Clove Club would be the highlight of the trip, that while she was going through chemotherapy and the only thing that she could keep down was a bagel with cream cheese that she would think of the great meal we had and the great people who worked there. To start, it was not the greatest day. Some of our plans fell apart and we had a mediocre lunch, but, of course, we made the best of it. So when the time came for dinner, we were actually a bit tired and a little done in. We were met at the door by a somewhat largish gentleman who took our names before letting us in. Our very nice Matre d' directed us to our table and off we were. We ordered the tasting menu with the wine paring. Andrea, my girlfriend, was raised in Washington wine country and so has a somewhat good vocabulary when it comes to wine. I just like to drink it, but I pay attention. We did not know any of the wines on the menu at all. The sommelier was a wonderful woman who loved to talk wine. We talked about American wines and she talked about every other kind. She was nice and cheery, informative and receptive. We learned so much about the wine she was serving and she presented each one such that it felt like a brand new experience with each taste (which it was). The dinner was superb. I was, at first, skeptical. One of the first items we were served was pieces of fried chicken. I was raised in the southern part of the United States in an area known for its fried chicken. Fried chicken is easy to make, but easy to ruin and difficult to really make taste good. The fried chicken at the Clove Club was magnificent. It was not dry, but not greasy. It had a great flavor with just the right amount of spice to it. I was hooked. Every item on the menu not necessarily better than the one before, but all exceptionally good. Every item a different experience. Some an explosion of flavors, others a subtle hint. And every one paired to perfection with the wine. The funny thing is, that as good as the food was (and the food was really, really good), we talk just as much about how good all the servers were. The stand-out was, of course, the man in the bright green suit (I'm sorry, but I don't remember your name), not just because he had a bright green suit, but that he had the personality to pull off wearing a bright green suit in a serious venue. I thank you, because you put me at ease and allowed me to enjoy myself and experience everything not at 'a Michelin starred, one of the 50 best restaurants', but at a nice evening out with a fine meal and stellar company. Even the young man busing the tables was great company with a slight edge. On one plate was left a little sauce to which he asked if I wanted some bread to sop it up. I replied 'no', but that I could understand if someone wanted to lick the plate. He told me, in a nice way, that I would regret my decision, and he was absolutely right. To this day, I regret not getting that bread. Why am I writing this three years later? We recently rearranged the furniture and the menu was behind a dresser. We had such a good time recounting the whole trip and the dinner specifically, that I thought the people at the restaurant might like to know. I know that the staff probably has changed a bit, and that, to me, is too bad as we loved every one of them and had an absolutely marvelous time. Andrea is still cancer free and we are thankful for the memory of a bright spot in an otherwise dark time in our lives. Thank you.
17/03/2020: Really enjoyed the six-course tasting menu here, even with some challenging dietary requirements of gluten and lactose free. The champagne and wine advice from the sommelier were exceptional. The little personal nods as it was a birthday booking made it all the better.

Kafeteria

Hoxton, Hackney
09/08/2019: Just letting everyone know that this place has permanently closed down in July 2019. Cafe Arena next doors is still serving so use it as an alternative.
13/07/2019: This place has been serving the best coffee I came across in London. And Pastel de Natas. And surely peeps who has been visiting this place have their faves. Unfortunately the lovely young man who is on duty today told me this is their last day! So fellow coffee lovers and foodies if the review is up and running today (Saturday, 13 july), pop in, have some yummy food and a bang tidy cup of coffee!

(Original) Awesome Italian food made on site that is a real authentic taste of Italy. Friendly staff, great selection of beers wines and spirits. Vegetarians catered for. Hreat place to visit of you're in Finsbury Park.
(Original) Giving this 5 stars because the owner, Antonio, is also the front of the house, the chef, the server, the bartender - & he managed to get some delicious food out to us, while engaging in some great chat :) Came on a wintry Friday night & had the spinach ravioli (my favorite of the lot), steak fillet, chicken cacciatore, panna cotta & tiramisu. Portions were big & reasonably priced. Antonio makes the dessert as well - the tiramisu was very good! Give Antonio is a 1-man show when the restaurant isn't fully reserved, it's best not to come if you're in a rush or expect fast service.

Premises Cafe

Haggerston, Hackney
13/11/2019: . . .
03/08/2019: The Premise Cafe is one of my favourites when ever I am in the area. The food is fabulous and the service is very friendly and hospitable. No matter how many times I go, I find myself glazing over the photos of all the artist that have graced the cafe. I know I'll be back!!!

The Londesborough

Clissold, Hackney
23/11/2019: Dave and Caroline are great hosts who manage a good welcoming local pub and care about there customers. The beers are always spot on.Nice to see a pub that caters for the local community.Well DoneP/S You could show the Mayfield how to treat customers properly.
14/11/2019: We had our wedding here a few weeks ago. Couldn't speak highly enough of the Londesborough for both the day itself and the ease of the process generally over the course of the past few months.Really lovely relaxed laid-back unpretentious venue that looked wonderful on the day and was a great space for 90 or so guests. The staff put up all of our decorations and it's clearly a very smooth operation in terms of how things run throughout the day. Staff were lovely and the food was plentiful and delicious (the lamb in particular came in for a lot of praise). A particular benefit we loved was being able to offer guests the choice of 3 starters and 3 mains. We hired DJ Lee (aka Catfight) for the evening and he kept the dancefloor full all night with some great tunes.Aside from the day itself, the whole organisational process with Amber over the preceding few months was really easy and no stress. A particular thing worth highlighting was that the pricing was really transparent and there were no nasty surprises or areas where we felt the venue was taking the mickey. The overall cost ended up being almost bang on what we thought it would be to start with, so there was never a feeling that costs were going out of control. Double thumbs-up from my wife and I.

Lounge Bohemia

Haggerston, Hackney
24/02/2020: I've worked round the corner for years but only found out about this place through word of mouth - wish I'd known sooner! Incredible cocktails. Recommend the 6 cocktail tasting menu (£35pp at time of writing) - so imaginative and special. I'll definitely be back.

Oklava

Haggerston, Hackney
10/03/2020: I would like to start this review by saying we had a great time, and the food was very good overall.Firstly, it's not a huge site, and with the roaring oven it can become a little hot/ loud/ overwhelming, if you get hot easily I would definitely not sit at the bar and wear something light. We went for the set menu and added the pide with the egg inside. We loved all of the food served, but did find it all to be on the heavy side, apart from the "market special" which on that day was dover sole, so we were excited to have some fresh clean fish part way through to break up the heavy dishes. The lemon sole was the worst I have ever had. It was absolutely tiny... on the main menu the market special is priced at £30... i think. And for two of us the fish was totally dissapointing, it was really tiny and I mean tiny, and had been drenched in oil/ garlic/ lemon and some sort of vinegar, it almost tasted briney??? For me personally, if you are going to serve heavy dishes one after the other, the fish dish should have sung with freshness and lightness to cut through. Yes we didnt raise this as an issue to the staff, and yes it may have been resolved, but ultimately it boiled down to the tastes of each part of the tasting menu it was all too heavy and overly seasoned with parsley/ garlic. I love these flavours, but when every dish ends up tasting the same it makes a fun experience kind of monotonous???I found the service good, but not great, we were excited to try turkish wines as we hadn't before but the waitress didnt know anything about the wines and we were not asked throughout if the food was okay... Also, on the note of the food being too heavy consecutively, we were obviously let down by the fish, then we had the seftali kebab (beautiful!!! but heavy again after all the other heavy dishes), we then had dessert, we were hopeful for a light acidic cut through the fat/ oil (in a good way) of all the previous courses, instead we got deep fried filo pastry with mozzarella and clotted creams with sultanas/ raisins, my god seriously!!!! No human could go and have the set menu and not feel a bit sick by the end of it.I think with a few tweaks, and a bit of R&D on the menu to balance out heavy/ light dishes this could be a really fabulous restaurant. In conclusion, I would recommend Oklava, don't sit at the bar (too hot), order what you like from the menu, go less, and if you want more, add more, and don't go for the set menu. Yes it's good value, but it needed flavour profile variation and more thought.
08/03/2020: We really enjoyed our meal at Oklava but felt short-changed by the size of the portions. Although we had a menu for five people, we felt that you got enough food for only four people. There were only two fish, only enough bread for four, and for every course, three of our party got a really small portion as one was split by two and the other by three. This meant that the portions were incredibly uneven, which defeats the object of a sharing menu. For this reason, we will not be returning to Oklava as we didn't feel that the food was good value for money. For 37 pounds each, we don't expect to have uneven portions and to return home hungry.

Escudo de Cuba

Dalston, Hackney
09/03/2020: I drank a cocktail and feel myself in South America Caipirinha with passion fruits was amazing I will be every week to drink more cocktails

Open Kitchen

Haggerston, Hackney
08/03/2020: this is a college restaurant staffed by trainees and studentssmall menu open kitchen all cooked fresh great open restaurant good servicewe had mushroom bourguignion with mash , chicken kiev poached egg and skin on chips really good and a couple of carafes of house wine would definitely go back reasonably priceda great find
06/03/2020: On what is becoming an annual event four of us who live In London meet a couple who come up to London from Cornwall for a few days. We are all long term friends so it is a catch up and we vary the location. Having read a review in a newspaper we decided to give this establishment a try. It proved to be perfect for us as it was not busy on the night we came. This is probably because it was a really horrible wet cold night and perhaps people are currently getting a little scared of going out. For us however it was great. the room is nicely appointed and attractive and you can see what you are going to get to eat being prepared in the "Open Kitchen".For starters four of us had the beetroot carpaccio and two had the leek and potato soup all of which tasted good. For main courses two had Chicken Kiev, two had grilled fish and two fish stew. All of these dishes also tasted very good and the side orders of hand cut chips were as good as any of us have ever had. It is a minor complaint that the plates could have been warmer. We also all enjoyed quite a lot of wine with our meal. It has to be taken on board that this is a training establishment and people are learning but all of the waiting staff were charming and friendly. It should be noted that payment is by card only. Our food was very reasonably priced. Our wine consumption did push up the bill but that can be managed and all in all it was a very good evening. We intend to visit again on a more clement night.
