The best restaurants in Birch and Winstree Colchester East of England

What a find. The food here is fresh tasting, seasoned well cooked from scratch and really appealed to my palate. This place is slightly set back from the road and was a little difficult to find. A big sign outside would benefit it as the current signage is not quite positioned to see it as you drive. Starter for me was Tolleshunt Knights fresh mushrooms on toast. Before the starter was served we were given complimentary small potato with bacon and maple syrup- delicious ! Main course was salmon and green beans-seasoned excellently and was served hot and fresh Desert was sticky toffee pudding- light & fluffy sponge, very good Our waitress was Abby who was very polite, friendly and professional Thank you Chef and Abby . Beautiful gem, hidden off the beaten track. Well cooked and presented cuisine. Try the seafood pie or pie of the day. Fair prices.

We walked to this pub whilst stopping at the local campsite. It’s a great little place, nice and warm with a good selection of beers and lagers on tap. We had a lovely warm welcome and felt right at home from the moment we stepped in. The menu was quite basic but don’t be put off. I enjoyed one of the best lasagna’s I’ve ever had with a fresh salad to boot. We’ll definitely be back.

Had a lovely meal with our walking group. 15 of us turned up with no booking and we were looked after really well.

We visited the Donkey for Sunday dinner. Both had a fantastic home cooked dinner with tender meat, crispy roast potatoes, very generous portions and the staff were so welcoming and friendly. Cannot recommend it highly enough. We will definitely return for more. Thank you 🤩
