Lovely little pub, lovely home cooked food, very reasonably priced, if I lived in the area it would definitely be my local. My only criticism would be that there are just a few too many cobwebs hanging around, oh and better wine would be a bonus.

A real pub with real people, packed with big characters. Welsh is the first language of the village and is used freely in the pub, however, everyone is included and welcomed. Beer is really well priced for those wanting a bargain, less than £3 for bitter and the homemade meals are great value with the best chips in Wales, basic but tasty and plentiful. Spent two evenings here and I loved the place and the people, they don't make an effort to include you just feel immediately included. Great banter. There was a wide spectrum of people from a Scouser to a Czech lady and English settlers, In this mix the Welsh language was alive and well. The free-flowing humour between everyone gave the place its infectious character. Particular thanks to Peter and Sarah who run it, (Sarah's chips were slightly better :)) Ellen the barmaid was such great fun. If you would go to Paris and drink in an Irish bar then this place may not be for you, if you want to go to Wales and drink in a proper pub with proper people then roll your sleeves up and go in for a couple of pints, it will be an experience!

Visited this traditional country pub on the day we were viewing a property. So welcoming we stayed for dinner. The home cooked dinner was so nice I ordered it again and had seconds!! No comparison to the month we've just spent in America, dreadful food. Since been back and spent many hours and dinners here, we're almost locals now haha. Yes the fag butt's outside are dire but that's down to disrespectful smokers that think it's acceptable!

Such a shame as this little village pub has huge potential. Seriously lacking in some TLC, decor, cleaning. Everywhere we looked were cigarette ends, weeds, general disrepair. If you're going to have hanging baskets, weed them and put flowers in! Or take them down. The pub was full of dogs, and being only a small place, it felt like we were trapped in a kennel. Food was very below par and although it's menu says 'homemade' I doubt that very much. Personally I'd sack any cook that declared that as homemade. I'd know boil in the bag rice and tinned meat anywhere. The bread was so hard I'm sure I've chipped a tooth! The vegetarian option had probably been found at the bottom of the freezer and tasted and smelt quite old. As there are quite a few excellent reviews, maybe the regular cook was ill? But I'd never go again. Worst meal out we've ever had.

Meeting long lost family from the States staying in the village, we were tired after a long day visiting local sights, and so settled to eat at Y Gwydir. I'd not been there for about 10 years and was pleased to see how clean and well decorated it was. It busy with locals in the bar, and lovely to see Ellen, whom I'd known many years before, coping so professionally behind the bar! Our food was plentiful, and mine certainly well cooked - my cottage pie was more than enough for me, and was the very best I had ever eaten! The only very minor downside was that they had run out of peas to accompany it, so I had to settle for sweetcorn, of which there was far too much! If I'd thought at the time, I would happily have run over to the village shop opposite and brought back a pack of frozen peas!!

What a truly local welcoming pub, we were staying in a cottage in the village of Dolwyddelan for a week and made this place our go to for a few drinks each afternoon/evening and even had a meal on our last night as they had just opened the refurbished kitchen and we were tempted by the homemade lasagne and much talked about lamb burger. The landlord Pete and locals were really lovely and made us feel part of the community during our stay. Well worth a visit or two!

I know some on here have said don't let the decor put you off, and I know these are hard times for smaller pubs, but I couldn't bring myself to do anything more than have a couple of quite unremarkable pints from a sparsely-stocked bar. The pub has a magnificent beamed ceiling but the rest is badly in need of attention and the place just didn't feel comfortable - and the atmosphere was zero. Has to be said, the food I saw being served did look good but the guy serving it didn't exactly fill me with confidence. I like lots of different types of pubs, however basic, but I struggled to find any redeeming features in this one. Like I acknowledged, these are hard times - hopefully this village pub has a future.

What a nice place to be. First of all and I suppose the most important ( maybe ) was that the food was fab. Proper food. I got stuck into sausage, chips, egg and beans and it reminded me of my Auntie Nellys home cooking. The apple crumble that I unfortunatley had to share with my partner Julie was Gods gift to the taste buds. Simply divine. Rustic old proper pub ( DO NOT BE PUT OFF BY THE DECOR ). Right nice locals, barmaid with a smile and real nice chatty fella cooking ( Don't know if he's the owner but I would employ him tomorrow ) Make sure that you have the Apple crumble for pud. The prices are right too. Loo's are clean. Good parking. Ale was good.We will return and Highly recommend.David and Julie

A week in a rented cottage within walking distance saw us eating and drinking in this pub on three occasions and each was a great experience. On the Saturday night we fancied a curry so ate elsewhere but returned to Y Gwydyr for a drinking/live music/singing/dancing session and were made very welcome by both the hosts and local patrons. An excellent bitter was on tap (Madog Brewery) sold at an unbelievable price compared with home. Sunday lunchtime saw us return for a Sunday roast which was really good and it was such a pity that more patrons were not making use of the facility. We sat down in the restaurant on the Monday evening but it was decidedly lonely in there so we repaired to the bar to eat another excellent meal followed by more pints of Madog. This could be a really good pub if it didn't look like it was permanently in the middle of a DIY makeover. Two people that I met later in a nearby establishment had earlier on just 'poked their noses in' but decided the place wasn't for them due to the broken glass in the entrance door, the half finished panelling and the rather odd furniture and that's a pity because the food, the beer and the welcome are all top notch.

We visited four or five times while we were on holiday in the village. It is almost what you visualise as the quintessential country village pub - hulking beams, stone flooring, a gigantic fireplace with a cracking fire. The football was on, unobtrusively on a small TV near the bar. There is a pool table in a separate room. We all want our local to be like this.Really the only gripe was that there was only one real ale on draught - if that is your thing. We were there in winter, one imagines it is busier in the summer and perhaps can manage more than one beer on tap. Also the beer is served through a sparkler even though many beers are not meant to be served that way. We asked for it to be removed but they weren't able to get it off. The landlord was able to pour the beer flat.We did not eat here but saw what other customers were having - it seemed basic and fairly priced.

El pub tiene cerveza en barril en el fin de semana además de lagers estándar, and bitters", Guinness durante toda la semana. Estamos bastante hablador y encontramos un pub para ser amable, el propietario y la dueña es encantadora y muy servicial. Well, this meal could have given the Magpie in Whitby a run for its money, as the portion was large, fresh, crisp batter and moist fish. The chips were the best I have tasted for many years. My wife, son, and I were visiting friends in the UK. Upon arriving at Manchester airport, they picked us up and whisked us away to Wales. We checked in at a small little cottage literally a 2 minute walk down the road. The day we arrived (Thursday), it appeared the pub was closed when we were looking for a spot for dinner. Apparently we just missed the open time. The next day, we were able to go for dinner and the owner allowed us to spread out in our own private room! I'm sure it wasn't meant to be private, but we were the only ones there for a bit. It was perfect for our nearly 2 year old who could run around and not bother anyone. The food and drink were fabulous! By far, our best meal in Wales. After dinner, we went over to the pub side and nobody seemed to mind that we had our kid with us. We had many drinks and then ended up by the nice fireplace in the back on the couch just enjoying the night. When we visit Wales again, we'll be sure to come back to Y Gwydyr.

The food was well presented, and service was prompt and friendly. However the room was cold (definitely no log fire!). On trying to pay the bill we discovered that despite the sign saying that credit and debit cards were taken, they only took chip and pin cards.
