I’ve been here 4 times and on each occasion the food has been excellent, though It’s sometimes hit and miss with the staff. On our first couple of visits the waitresses couldn’t have been more helpful. They advised what would go with what, made up a dipping sauce and were happy to make suggestions. However, a couple of weeks ago we were greeted with what could only be described as apathy from both the waitress and the gent at the counter. Luckily a young couple on a neighbouring table were more than happy to advise. So, no problems with the food, but you take your chances with the staff. Also, not sure about the £16-£24 guide given in the price range. Meal for two was about £65.... but I will be going again.

What a wonderful experience, I wasn’t sure what to do, was given help. Food was fantastic very fresh. I would 100% recommend this completely different dining experience. It’s so sociable, very reasonable and drinks were priced well. As a completely new experience and unsure of what to order, we went for the set menu (a bit of everything) for 4 people. It was more than enough. Thanks for a great evening

The menu consists of soup and then you have to pick all the ingredients you want in the soup. Sounds a bit dull the way I describe, but it was so satisfying to put the ordered meat, chicken and a whole range of vegetables in a pot of hot boiling soup. The soup pot was nested inside the table with a hot plate underneath. I gave it a 10 out of 10. Delicious food. Only downside is I am 6 foot 5 and I had a bit of trouble with the low table. Anyone below 6 foot 4 should be able to sit very nice and comfortable.

Unlike other reviewers who appeared to have stumbled across this place, we had been recommended this eatery by a student of mine, and so we had full grid reference, A-Z streetmap page number and square, “Just Three Words” and latitude and longitude to 6 significant figures. We were never going to miss. Basically, we were blown away by the variety of flavours and textures, both absolutely superb. We really didn’t know what to do, but after a 2 minute catch up with an incredibly helpful waitress we dived in and didn’t look back. Not the cheapest of places to eat, but well worth the money.

Another group who stumbled across this place and we weren’t disappointed. We chose vegetarian meal for 3 as we didn’t have a clue what we were ordering. The amount of food was plentiful and the staff were brilliant.

We stumbled on this place by accident, if you have never tried this type of cuisine before then you must try! Beware, mild spicy is very hot. Staff were very patient and helpful, everyone else on the place was Chinese so very popular with those that know about it.

This small hot pot restaurant is situated just off Hurst St. I found it superior to the one on Hurst St. The menu typically is in Chinese and you tick off the dishes you require. Don’t worry though the waitresses speak good English. We opted for a split broth to cook our food in. I had the hottest level of chilli whilst Susan had mushroom. The waitress prepares your dipping sauce next to the table with a good choice of sauces and herbs. As there is no wine Tsingtao beer was the obvious choice too wash down the food with. My broth was certainly very hot indeed, second in heat only to one I had in Beijing. Your chopsticks have a removable wooden tip which was a new one on me. The ingredients were all fresh and tasty, especially the beef. I found the bill at over £60 slightly expensive considering we only had 2 beers to drink. In fairness we did slightly over order though as portions are generous. The facilities and service as well as the food are authentic Chinese.

We stumbled upon this place looking for an early dinner (about 5.30pm). We really weren't sure to start with. The menu is mostly in Chinese (I think) but then we spoke to the waitress and she agreed to help. We opted for a half/half broth of spicy (or in her opinion 'mild') for the meat and mushroom for the vegetables (vegetarian). We ordered a bit of meat, prawns, tofu, vegetables and noodles. Everything arrived looking fresh, well presented and delicious. The waitress prepares your bowl for you with green herbs, garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, sesame paste and oyster sauce. You then cook your dinner at your leisure. Absolutely brilliant! Be careful to order small and order up as you go along - portions are very generous. We spent £54 for 2 with only 1 drink (coconut milk). Cannot wait to go back as a (slightly) more experienced eater!

We stumbled across this place on our first visit to Birmingham from London and I do have to say we were very pleasently surprised. We initially felt out of our depth as we had never experienced a Chinese hot pot before, but the staff we very helpful with recommendations and preparing dipping sauce in front of us. This was not just a meal, this was an experience. Would 100% recommend to those feeling a little adventurous. One of our highlights was the noodles, that were clearly fresh and like none we'd had before, when paired with the broth and dipping sauce. But be warned even the mild spicy broth, to me and my boyfriend was a bit like lava but absolutely delicious at the same time! Thanks so much!

This is my go to place when in Birmingham which has re-opened after a lengthy closure due to an unfortunate family bereavement. Since re-opening the Tung Lok has had a name change to Ocean Pan and has had a refurbishment which looks very nice indeed. The food hasn't changed and is fresh, tasty and the portion sizes are filling. The owner Amy is very welcoming, friendly and nothing is too much trouble for her. My family will be back again for sure.
