We were looking for a lunch stop whilst on the A303 near to Thruxton and found The White Horse just by chance. What a find! We had a delicious lunch and will certainly return here again. Highly recommend it if you’re in the area

We came for lunch on Saturday 9th November without booking and pleased that they had space. The lady behind the bar was super, got us some drinks whilst chatting and directed us over to another lady who showed us to our table. The menu, whilst limited, was lovely and there was enough choice for us, although a baguette menu would have been preferred. Our order was taken promptly and when our food came it was hot, plentiful and delicious. Sadly, our only criticism was who we could only think was the manageress. The two most wonderful ladies were doing a fantastic job working the lunch service which was busy but they bounced off one another.. (probably the best waitresses I have seen in a pub establishment for a long time!) But the manageress we can only assume kept directing them and telling them what to do and not to do. We could see it all as sat central to the pub. Such a shame a manager feels like they have to do this to their staff when they were the kindest ladies. We would love to return but sadly felt uneasy by this.

A usual place for us to come for lunch. We hadnt been for a while whilst they had a chef change over but the new chef is well worth the visit!! The menu was brilliant with lots of choice. Food came out hot and plenty of it.. also delicious clean plates all round. Lovely atmosphere. Staff as always are fantastic, chatty and welcoming but saddened to hear that Claire is no longer there... A firm favourite of ours and she really was a breathe of fresh air whenever we saw her. Full of smiles and always jolly! We hope to see you back soon.

Stopped for lunch I chose homemade lasagna. Very disappointing , stodgy dry and flavourless and a third of it , most unlike me . My partner had fish and the batter was far from crisp. I mentioned the lasagna to the staff and there was an apology and the chef would be told and that was it . Personally if I was running a pub I would have offered a complimentary sweet . I probably should have sent it back but being on a long journey didn’t really have the time . I felt the staff’s response was really one of indifference .

Chicken goujons and chips were absolutely smothered in salt and totally inedible. When at the end asking for the manager the waitress was EXTREMELY rude and told us ‘well you should have asked us to cook it more but that’s the way we cook it’ didn’t get us the manager and when we said 2 meals came late she said ‘well you actually arrived late’ as if that effected the fact we all ordered at the same time? No apology about the fact we were all unhappy with our food it was more of a ‘whatever’ attitude, they didn’t care at all. We visited on a Saturday evening, one other table of four. To be fair it was early in the New Year. We were asked if we were eating and said yes we have a table booked for 7.30 and gave her the name, she replied no 7 o’clock. ( this was 7.15) and for a moment thought she was going to argue the toss. We ordered the food, starters were pate, goujons, prawn skewers and tikka bites, others were fine but my tikka bites were well overdone, but just about edible. Mains came, three steak pies mash and peas, small dollop of runny mash. One ribeye steak which our friend said was ok ish, had been cut open a few times so looked a bit odd, skinny chips that taste of nothing, back to steak pies, the meat was pretty chewy, tasty gravy though even if it was too garlicky. My husband had a dessert, creme caramel, very basic, no finishing touches. Won’t be on my list of “must go back to’s”.

A good curry, hearty ham, egg and chips, really good pork belly and a generous ploughman’s with great bread and enough cheese to feed an army. We had good puddings and coffee. I had a well kept pint of guest ale. Pleasant place, happy staff, and a good atmosphere. Just what was needed!

We have been to this pub on numerous occasions and always had a good experience with varied menus which always made it good choice for a special meal, hence booking a table for a birthday meal. The pub has clearly changed hands and the new owners have apparently decided to go for a slightly more down market menu. The basic burgers, gammon etc and chips (frozen) are all present and the meal we had was ok but no longer that special or memorable, however was still pricey for what was on offer. Given the level of competition in the area we probably will not be back, a shame.

We found this place purely by chance while travelling from Kent to Devon on a Monday in September 2016, while we were looking for somewhere to break the journey and have lunch. We both had the pie of the day, it was excellent! It was so good we made a point of timing the return journey the following Friday so we could stop for lunch again, and again it was excellent! Two years later, we're on a trip to Dorset. We couldn't go there on the way down, so we planned our journey back so we could stop off for lunch again - not even being 100% sure it was still open, as so many places have closed down over the years. We were happy to see that it was still open, and in fact very busy - so busy there were no tables available inside, but as it was a nice day we were happy to sit out in the garden. Unfortunately the Pie of the Day had sold out, so I ordered the dressed crab, which was advertised as coming with chips and salad, and my girlfriend had a ploughman's lunch. The ploughman's lunch consisted of a few lettuce leafs, some thin slices of ham which looked like they had come from a packet from the supermarket, some cheese, pickle and some warm crusty bread - the bread was probably the nicest thing on the plate, but no butter was provided! My crab was very under seasoned, the salad was OK and the chips came out late, by which time they were cold enough to make it fairly obvious they had been done with the rest of the meal but then got missed on the side.If I had reviewed this place two years ago (and I thought I had) then I would have given 5 stars. If I had not eaten here two years ago and was judging it just on the most recent meal then it would probably have been 2 stars.I am hoping for their sake this was a one-off just because they were busy and/or short of staff. I am glad for them that they were busy, but if this was typical then I don't see that lasting.

We stayed here overnight, 120 miles from home with 180 miles to Padstow. Everything was fine - comfortable beds, good duvets, tv, tea making and the shower was wonderfully powerful; a surprise in a 17th century building. Better than "fine" was how clean everywhere was. I was amazed.Drinks and dinner wasn't your standard pub grub, NOT chips with everything!! The dining/breakfast room was very nice. Breakfast was plentiful; cereal, juice, full English, toast, And YES, we would stay here again.

Very conveniently situated near to Thruxton circuit where we had been in the morning. Pleasant garden & old fashioned interior but the service was terrible - the young girl didn't seem to know what menu or wine menu to use. Probably not her fault to be fair because they were in the process of changing the wine menu but very difficult for the customer ! So much was "not available". Food was sadly nothing to write home about and not a great selection for a vegetarian. Afraid I would not return.

Had lunch here today. Roast lamb dinners were very nice. The roast beef dinners had only one slice of thick cut beef. Not really enough for adult men. The cod fish fillet had been cut in half to make 2 portions and the chip portions were measly. The chicken and mushroom pie was awful. Not much chicken and pieces of white wet chicken skin. The amount of chips on the plate was also measly. We did ask for more chips and we did point out that the chicken and mushroom pie had lots of chicken skin in it. When I paid the bill the barperson who had seen the wet white chicken skin told me that the chef only uses skinless chicken ......which makes me wonder what the hell the white wet mess was!

I had lunch at The White Horse recently with a friend, I had booked a table in advance which was a good idea as the pub did get quite busy. We ate in the restaurant and it is a good size with not too many tables so there is room to move. The service was good and the staff were very friendly, the lunchtime menu main coursed were written up a black board in the bar, there wasn’t a huge choice of main meals 4 or 5 and they were the usual Fish and Chips, Hamburger, Vegi burger, Fresh Crab salad and Pie of the day which when we were there was a Cottage Pie. It wasn’t the most exciting choice but it does cover most people’s favourite dishes. We both had the fish and chips and I have to say the fish was very fresh and the batter was very light and crispy, I didn’t like the chips as they were frozen ones and you don’t normally get those nowadays, more often than not most pubs make their own chips, but having said that we both enjoyed the meal. We didn’t have a desert so I cannot comment on those. Also on the menu was a good selection of sandwiches and baguettes, I did see some sandwiches that were ordered for other customers and they looked very good. The pub itself seemed clean and tidy and as I said the staff are friendly and polite and they offer good pub grub at a reasonable price. I would go back again. If I was the owner I would be tempted to ask if I could paint a picture on the concrete wall that greats you when you leave the pub by the front door, it would help to create a more welcoming view of the pub.

Came here a couple of weeks ago based on reviews. I ordered the chicken, bacon and mushroom pie. I didn’t think anything was wrong at the time but by the time we got home I couldn’t leave the bathroom and was violently sick - Will not be returning!

Stayed overnight last Saturday together with my Son, we had a meal at the pub in the eveningWe found Janet and all of the staff to be very friendly and made us feel very much at home, hope to stay here again.I had Cod chips and mushy peas and Martyn had the chicken Kiev, both were nicely cooked and well presented.Talking with Janet this is a new venture at the White Horse, She has lot's of exciting plans and if you have not yet visited or are thinking of doing so then I have no hesitation in recommending this delightful pub which has so much character.Janet deserves to be successful and I wish her the very best of luck and looking forward to returning again to the White Horse.

Been for lunch and everything was just poor. When Sat down wasn't given any lunch menus I had to ask. I asked if glasses could be moved as I had my young son this wasn't done for another 20 minutes. Ordering wasn't easy it seemed I asked for peas for my son got beans menu states peas. I asked for club sandwich and cheese chips. The young girl came back and said u said cheese I said no cheesy chips she oh ok..she then comes back again asking what bread. Once orders here mine wrong got no brie as asked and cheddar for sum reason. No sauces offered. She then served a starter to another table I had to ask for sauces. I left my meal and paid for the other 2. I don't think I should of paid at all..was awful. When I said to the girl it's cheddar she said yeah like it was meant to Be? I said I ordered brie she said oh did u. I said yeah it's brie and bacon. She said oh. No order read back. I was told they were quite new staff but simple things wasn't done..also no meal check on the 2 meals. Why did I pay at all????

We stayed here 1 night on our way to Southampton and couldn't fault it. Had an evening meal in the garden which was lovely and good choice on the menu. Got a good night's sleep as it was comfortable and quiet and got up to a tasty breakfast served by the friendly owners. A great start to our honeymoon, thanks guys. Will definitely stay again if we are in the area!

Such a lovely setting on a warm evening stop off on the way to Devon. Unfortunately they were only serving fish and chips for dinner. I would of happily stayed and ordered said dish had the bar staff of been a little less rude and dismissive. Customer service makes a HUGE impact and sadly this was majorly lacking.

good food and a lovely restaurant. beautiful garden, the only small bit that stopped giving it a five star I was told we would told when to go to our booked table. I had to chase them up at the bar as this didn't happen but they were extremely apologetic and it wasn't a major issue. Restaurant were very attentive without being intrusive,

Great place to visit, excellent service, love the way the manager checks you are ok with everything in a very timely fashion. Not interrupting your meal or conversation. Good selection of beers and wines. Couldn’t recommend this place enough
