We came across this great little place by accident, and we were so happy that we did do. There was a great selection of homemade tray bakes, great coffee, and great service. We would certainly go back if passing.

Wee gem of a cafe, situated next to Asda in Kilkeel. Food is always freshly made and always good. Amy and Caroline always provide service with a smile and good food. I normally go for the omlette and it is very filling, with a lovely side salad, and feel I'm having the healthy option. Their range of sandwiches and ciabattas are great too. They have a wide range of desserts and tray-bakes - and it's very hard to choose just one as they all look so good . .also their lemon scones are just divine.

I have been here twice now, both for a weekday lunch, and would visit again. The first time I had a goats cheese and pepper spring roll on salad, which I have never had before anywhere - it was lovely. The second time I had the special, a VERY good value and yummy chicken broccoli bake - the waitress (and chef) kindly agreed to swap the standard large offering of chips for a very nice salad and just a small handful of chips. Both times I think I took a cake to go, and they were both yummy! I think for the quality of the food the prices are exceptionally reasonable!!! Oh, and the service was VERY good - quick and friendly. The only issue I have with this place is the layout... as mentioned by others. This is quite a small establishment, and so why they feel it is necessary to have a huge couch is beyond me. It is indeed quite cramped towards the back of this place near the toilet and things really do need to be moved about a bit. If a customer was disabled, I feel that they would not be able to get to the toilet.

This popular eaterie has become a victim of it's success. Beware going on a Saturday. Crowded with long waits and cramped conditons. First of all, they need to rethink their seating. If you have to use the toilet you will have to push aside diners who are so close to the door leading into the toilet area that you hit their seats. I was there one time when a delivery was being made and we had to literally get up out of our seats so they could get to the back. Today, we had to share a table with a stranger as they were so crowded seating was scarce. When we arrived we had to wait and wait for even the vacated table to be cleared. Two waitresses are run off their feet and overall efficiency is lacking. I watched one waitress putting out dishes on a cleared table and she seemed to be in slow motion. When you're that busy you need to move. Management needs to get on all this. One time I had my debit card rejected due to a problem with the machine and had to return with cash. This is all unacceptable and unfair to patrons. And get rid of the couch at the front which is an attempt to create a cozy atmosphere but not in a small area like this cafe is. Two tables could be put there and the one blocking the toilet area removed.

First time trying food in here. Myself and 3 others went in for a late brunch and we were not disappointed at all . We were served quickly by a nice waitress . The food was very hot and tasty indeed , I had the sweet chilli chicken with chips . Wow far nicer than any chinese . We all enjoyed our food and cleaned the plates . We will be returning asap . Ps the scones are to die for and are the best around by miles .

Kilkeel is a small coastal town that boasts one of the best fish & chip shops in the province, it has an ASDA by accident and a pretty good quality butchers as well. We both had an open prawn salad in this place and y’know when it was put in front of me I laughed. The cold water prawns were excellent, and an alright portion; the brown bread that they rested on was darn good too but this was a salad throwback to the 1970’s like Kilkeel itself also a throwback in many ways. The era that gave us prawn cocktail, tequila sunrise, Harvey wall-bangers, glam rock, dehydrated meat and powdered sauce in Vesta chicken supreme, beef curry, risotto and Chow Mein that was unlike any Chow Mein I’ve ever seen. I’ve posted a photo of the prawn salad to let you work out each of the 12 or so ingredients including those out of a tin and out of a jar. Just think this was hip in the 1970’s. The price was ok and the service good. We also had good cappuccinos. Next time I go I’ll try another dish to see what era I land in. They played background music which was excellent too.

Found this lovely restaurant with an incredible selection of tray bakes, scones and delicious goodies. It has so much potential except for the fact that tray bakes were handled onto the plate with no serving tongs. This worried me as I saw the waitress just before picking up the tray bake walk across the floor with a teaspoon of hot choclate to decorate a drink. The sprinklings not only fell across the floor but when it spilt on the counter top, she immediately swept the spillage into the floor. Not washing her hands she picked up the traybake and placed it onto a plate. There were other little things she did. Poor waitress has no training in the service industry especially with regard to washing your hands , either using gloves or tongs.

Called in around mid afternoon for quick cuppa and decided to have sausage roll too. Recalled it being the more sharp hypster "Salt and Pepper" before. Noted a number of tables uncleared and just too much food on the unswept floor. Sorry but can't comment on food except sausage roll was ok. Maybe we just experienced cafe at a weaker moment.

This is our second visit, the first was last year just after it opened. We were looking forward to our visit and even brought the mother in law along. We were not disappointed, the food, was excellent, fresh, well cooked and presented, oh, and there was plenty of it. The service was great, the staff could not be more friendly or helpful. The facilities were immaculate. All in all, we have nothing but praise for this little gem. We will be back the next time we choose to drive the Mourn Coast Route.

I have been visiting this establishment for a number of months . The food is first class cooked to perfection and to the customers liking. The fresh baked breads and pastries are a delight. The staff are friendly and always accommodating. Afternoon tea is the best I have had in any establishment. This is a wee gem situated in Kilkeel beside Asda. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Went to get lunch with a friend. The staff were the friendliest people, very helpful, and food was served promptly. The food itself was the nicest. Their Irish fry is especially delicious. I have been numerous times since my first visit and it never disappoints. Fresh baked breads every day including scones, soda’s and pancakes and tasty deserts are amazing. If you are ever in the area make sure you pop in. Their afternoon tea is great and is truly a treat.

Great food. Very friendly service. Accommodated my elderly mum and 2 young kids with pernickety food requirements! I ordered soup and scampi and can honestly say that the scampi was the best I've ever had. Very family friendly, high quality restaurant food in a food court off a butchers. Defo worth a visit. Will be coming back for sure.

Myself and my wife went for lunch, yesterday the 7th July. We both had the fish supper meal and found it to be the best we ever had. So many restaurants, hotel's,cafe and carry outs tell you it's Cold,so many times we have been disappointed so we vote with our feet and don't go back are order something else This was diffently Cod at it's best. We sat in the front of the cafe beside bakery, the girl who served us was excellent,so nice to see someone who are pleasent and professional, also noted a young guy servicing and he was also excellent. No doubt next time in Newry we will return and will have no hesitation in recommending The Shelbourne. Keep up the good work. Chris & Jackie Bleary Portadown S
