Sorry to see Mc Cooeys in Newry Closed for a Sit down breakfast went there for one of their great meals, and found that you can only get served through a hatch. Shame,, it was a really nice wonderful restaurant to dine in. I wish them all the best in the future. I guess that we'll have to find another place to go for our breakfast

This is a first for me. A Wu flu review at a distance; so I didn’t actually go in the door of this cafe, nor did I choose the foodie goodies, nor can I comment on the prices as I don’t know them either. I’ll explain: we are locked down at home and we can’t go out. So a week or so ago, knowing our first world plight, two of our friends arrived at our door with two cappuccinos from this business and stood well back from our front door (other friends sent us flowers). The lady owner of this place has maintained food & coffee service six days a week on her own (not Sunday) all over lockdown from a serving hatch. Fair play to her. I wasn’t going to do a review just on two cappuccinos even though they were very good cappuccinos. I’d gone to this cafe a few times over the years but it was now long ago. Today changed things when our friends arrived once more with two cappuccinos and two sausage rolls and stood well back. Now I’m fussy about sausage rolls (and sausages). I’m conscious that those with less scruples know they can get away with very cheap, fatty ‘meat’ and cheap fat laden anaemic looking barely cooked pastry. If you are local and you want to try cheap to make (but not cheap to buy) industrially made sausage rolls there’s choices down hill street. So back to this place. I was sceptical about the quality of sausage rolls but my scepticism was totally misplaced. They were delicious. The sausage meat did not taste at all cheap nor fatty. We heated them and the aroma was lovely but I actually think they taste great cold because they aren’t greasy - just like excellent Melton Mowbray pork pies. The spice kick was about right - these rolls really have great taste - and the best surprise of all our friends said that the owner makes them herself and together with minced pork she had added chorizo, goats cheese and jalapeño. This is what happens when an astute business concentrates on quality food products first on what they are making to sell, rather than simply being only interested in maximising profit regardless by making food as cheap as possible while staying legal. The sausage roll pastry too was delicious. It was light and golden. flavoursome and moreish. So we’ve become instant fans. The owner usually has a blackboard out front with a joke or an acerbic comment and she sure has a healthy, cheeky sense of humour - her observation style is more akin to Chrissy T eigen than Plato

After reading the reviews, I was keen to try this cafe. We visited at about 3pm on a Saturday. We were able to park opposite and I was surprised by it’s shabby exterior, but we continued in. We ordered and were promptly brought a big pot of tea, great start. My husband enjoyed his Big bap, hence the rating of two, but my Goat’s cheese and beetroot sandwich was awful, consisting of a few crumbs of goat’s cheese and two thick layers of beetroot. Luckily, I like beetroot and I was hungry, so I ate it. I almost think I was in a different place to other reviewers! The service was minimal, staff were sitting around chatting or on their mobiles. It was not a good experience.

Somehow this place had installed itself on my Facebook and I loved the owners posts - typical NI humour ! So when I was passing last week and my belly was growling, a quick detour was needed. 2 cracking Ulster Fry’s and a steaming pot of tea (no oul dishwater here) were demolished ! The plates wouldn’t need a burl in the dishwasher - licked clean they were ! The sausages and black pudding need a special mention (and we were told where to get the BP - wee surprise there !) The staff were great - made two Belfast blow-in’s very welcome and the owner stopped for a chat, telling us about the Comedy night. Two tickets bought and is hotel booked for the end of the month - so get the pan on girls - we’re coming back !

We have called five times, -should, have, and will be more often -.The girls/staff like the food are unpretentious, they probably think I'm a butter on cheese and mushroom omelettes. Having read bits and pieces of very witty repartee from the owner I called in for a fry. Every place has an off day and, from previous reviews, I’m hoping that my fry offering was indeed a blip. I didn’t want the black or white pudding and usually an alternative is offered - a few mushrooms or another egg perhaps. Not this time but that’s ok too, cafes aren’t under any obligation to offer anything. I was so disappointed with my fry when it came. The small pieces of soda and potato bread were fatty and unappealing and the sausage was burned. Hunger made me eat the soda but the potato bread was awful. I felt as if nobody cared. Poor me. The end.

My mum had been telling me about the laughs and great grub in McCooeys so I'd been dying to try it out for a while. My other half is a Galway man, making me a South Armagh exile now living in 'the Freeschtate'. For years, he couldn't understand me until I showed him Lianne's Youtube video of the culchie dictionary. So naturally he wanted to meet the icon herself. Firstly, the place was brilliant- so comfy and warm on a chilly pre-Christmas shopping day. The food was bang-on. Big mugs of tay and huge toasties that my big lad pronounced to be a fine feed indeed. The table was roomy enough for all five of us to sit down and have a cracking feed before we hit the road for the long journey back (for the record, we were still stuffed by the time we got home). Lianne came outside to say cheerio to us as we left- she really is a ticket. I remember her well from the Sacred Heart school bus (44) & she's not changed one bit. We'll be back for sure. I'm bringing more Galwegians next time too.

It was a while since I was there last so I decided to stop off Saturday mornings for a breakfast .. when I entered there was a few empty seats and I was soon approached by a waitress. The first thing she said was are you here for a breakfast when I said yes she said I'm sorry but there is a bit of a wait this morning 20 to 25 minutes. I was taken back to be honest I have never been to a restaurant before that the inform you there is a delay before you order and to be Doubly honest it was great to be told that . How many times have you sat in a restaurant placed you order and waited and waited on your food wondering when it is coming. Well in mccooeys the are brilliantly up front about it and when I thought of the options of going somewhere else it didn't make sense . Drive down the street look for parking get a table place an order would take longer than the 20 -25 minutes that I would wait her . So I said I would wait I settled down with a newspaper and a coke and in 20 or so minutes I was served the breakfast exactly as I ordered which is an achievement in itself as I'm a bit fussy . Extra toast was no issue even , After eating my fill came time to pay and when I happily handed over the few pounds the staff again apologised for the delay .

Dear Lianne,I have been an avid follower of your snapchat for a long time and had never popped in to try out your bistro/cafe/scone hub until now. To my dismay, I sat down at a table that was scattered with crumbs like leaves on an autumns day. Tried to ignore this, but then the deal breaker of the day came to light. I ordered the famous triple decker and was expecting big things. Big things I got indeed. I have been to Australia my fair share of times and I know a croc when I taste one. Lianne Mcooey, you will not pull the wool over my eyes/lips. Not to mention the fact that you skipped about the floor with spectacles on, making a mockery of fine dining. After hearing great reviews from friends and constantly awaiting the next Snapchat story from Lianne herself for a good laugh. Today I finally wandered into McCooey's for the first time needing to kill an hour waiting on my car to be fixed. Definitely a good shout and I reckon I'll be driving past Costa and Starbucks from now on to get my coffee fix! I'm rarely seen without a coffee and I have to say they make the nicest caramel latte in the town! Even got a second one to take away. Service was fab, extremely friendly and attentive ensuring all was okay. We hadn't realised we had sat at the only table that wasn't set ( being the awkward edgits we are) but the girls didn't mind at all. I had the baked potato special served with fajita chicken and cheese and jaysus it was class! Felt bad not eating the entire thing but sure I had pounded the coffee into me and was full before I knew it! My mum who's a waitress herself joined me and said she would happily visit regularly purely based on Lianne's sense of humour and great service from the other girls. I adore the daily McCooey Snapchats & my visits are just perfection & prove that what you see on snapchat isnt just for the camera...they are all as lovely there as they are in person! A must visit if you're in Newry!

Second time here for breakfast and was not one bit disappointed. Had a fry that would have feed a small army. Loved the fact that it is about the food and not all airs and graces. The staff are friendly but not over powering. The service was as quick as you would or should expect from a place that cooks to order remember your not at a fast food takeaway. Have seen a bad review here but can not see why it would get such a review.

Loved watching Leanne from McCooey's on facebook. Decided to call in for a latte and a muffin. When we called it was 3.50pm on a Wednesday afternoon. We did not realise they close at 4pm.We were made very welcome. Coffee was lovely. Really enjoyed the muffin. Would love to return for a lunch some day. Staff are very helpful and friendly.

Myself and my wife went for lunch, yesterday the 7th July. We both had the fish supper meal and found it to be the best we ever had. So many restaurants, hotel's,cafe and carry outs tell you it's Cold,so many times we have been disappointed so we vote with our feet and don't go back are order something else This was diffently Cod at it's best. We sat in the front of the cafe beside bakery, the girl who served us was excellent,so nice to see someone who are pleasent and professional, also noted a young guy servicing and he was also excellent. No doubt next time in Newry we will return and will have no hesitation in recommending The Shelbourne. Keep up the good work. Chris & Jackie Bleary Portadown S
