We stayed for a weekend while visiting family. We were the only guests on our first night, and were greeted very warmly with professional but friendly chat as we were shown to our room. The room was lovely, a great size for 2, very comfortable bed and very clean. We felt quite guilty that the chef had clearly come to work the next morning just to make us a couple of simple breakfasts, but the eggs were perfect so we appreciated him and the friendly waitress very much. We were also offered first refusal on a table in the restaurant that night as it was booking up, however we had plans so didn’t experience the evening meal, the thoughtful offer was a nice touch though. There were more guests the next night but it didn’t make any difference, we didn’t hear anyone in the other rooms, the service was on point and breakfast great. Thank you!

Stayed here for one night before starting my C2C ride from Whitehaven. Great hotel, really friendly service and super breakfast. Restuarant was closed (Sunday evening) so ate at the very nice Italian just over the road in Gosforth. Definitely recommend if you need to stay close to Whitehaven

Perhaps I was just unlucky, but I really did not enjoy my meal. I struggled with my 'rump of lamb'. It was undercooked and difficult to chew enough to swallow. Even when I cut very small pieces they would not break down. If it had been cooked more the stringy fibres would have been tender. The fatty layers were slimy. If it had been cooked more the fat would have melted away and oozed out. The outer skin layer was too tough to break down. Embarrassingly, I had to take too much out of my mouth and leave it half chewed on the plate. Should lamb be pink? I really love lamb but have never had it almost raw, like this. I really wish I had asked for it to be re-cooked, but that is embarrassing for others when you are in a group, especially when they are all enjoying their food. It would have also upset the timings of everyone's meal. I asked for more gravy and was surprised to be told that the gravy used was the same for both the beef and the lamb meals. Perhaps for the turkey too? How very odd! Vegetables and potatoes were nice, overcooked to the degree I personally prefer and were served nice and hot. The celeriac puree was not what I expected - disappointingly, just a thin sauce-like layer on the plate, and I did not see any red wine sauce, unless that was what I thought was the gravy. My chosen desert was lemon posset - which I gave up with. I love lemon flavoured desert but not this one! Half of it was a topping of dark purple and red berries of various sorts and every mouthful had my face involuntarily screwing at the tartness. There was no sweet syrup or cream to counterbalance this, and no shortbread, which I expected, either. And I don't like excessive seeds in fruit so I eventually pushed it to the side and dug for the posset. It posset reminded me strongly of school blancmange, the texture of which always made me feel sick. It was rubbery with a dense, almost tough, rubbery skin, which was quite vile. The person next to me enjoyed his and finished the other half of mine when I decided not to eat any more of it. I didn't say anything to any of the staff as we were a big party that someone else had organised, and I hate to cause a scene. The man opposite me had the lamb and he was very enthusiastic about it. The man next to me had the posset and enjoyed it. I imagine the hotel is not used to coping with parties the size of ours as we were in two rooms - not very pleasant at all. I rarely eat out and it is a huge treat for me when I do. This was not. On a positive note, staff seemed pleasant, efficient at serving and cleaning away, and the food presentation was superb. It all LOOKED very attractive and other people did seem to have enjoyed theirs. Perhaps I was just unlucky.....

I have dined at the Westlakes many times over the years and the food has always been excellent (which is why I keep coming back). However during my last stay at the hotel, I ate in the restaurant three nights and was disappointed on each occasion. On the first night I chose a rib eye steak cooked medium. When it arrived it was completely over-done, grey and dry. When I mentioned it to the waitress there was no reaction. On the second evening I decided that the ravioli would be a safer bet but I was wrong. It was chewy and stale and I suspect that it was straight from a packet with a sauce poured over it. Night three I tried the lasagne which was nice at first but as I got towards the centre, it was stone cold. Perhaps another minute in the microwave would have helped! I wont be staying there again.

A really warm and friendly welcome to this lovely clean and cozy hotel with lovely staff who take great care to ensure that you're happy and well served. We were a small party of 7 for our annual Christmas lunch and the service and food were impeccable. Portions were generous and, my usual bug bear, the vegetables were cooked perfectly. The option of having either 2 or 3 courses was perfect for a lunch where we were all the wrong side of 55! Relaxing with our coffees in the very comfy lounge none of us wanted to leave, and there was no pressure on us to do so. As our group is called Craft and Craic, we had plenty to talk about! I'm looking forward to bringing both my husband and visitors here soon, it's just so good.

Have eaten here three times since October 2014, and the food has been superb each time. Good amount of menu options, and prices very reasonable for the quality and compared to other places. Staff very nice and welcoming as well - will be back soon!

Shockingly dirty for a place serving food. Chairs an absolute disgrace. Dirty, stained, marked. I'm amazed environmental health hasn't been in and told them to get them cleaned. If it was only one I could have attempted to make some sort of excuse. But it wasn't. A group of us had gone for lunch but we all decided to find somewhere else. I'm honest baffled how Dixons are getting away with it? The Terrace cafe in Workington put this place to shame. I'm amazed people were eating there. We wouldn't go back. Pictures enclosed. Zoom in guys. Truly mehhhh 🙈🤮

The Bridge cafe in Millom has a sign advising that it has temporarily closed down. To be honest, having looked through the window it doesn’t look as though it’s likely to reopen anytime soon. The Trackside on the station is a fantastic alternative.

Unfortunately yet again The Peddler has been let down by the same rude member of staff that we have dealt with a few times. We were greeted by this lady shouting from across the room asking how many seats we need. When it was explained there would be 4 adults and room for two prams the waitress looked disgusted and barely checked before telling us they couldn’t accommodate us. The restaurant was empty and there was ample room for prams around all tables. The attitude of this member of stuff is always disgraceful, and everything seems to be too much of an ask. We’ve been to The Peddler numerous times and we will not be returning which is a shame as one person has ruined the reputation. Nearly £100 spent elsewhere.

Want to be able to give it more stars :/ Nice to have a chip shop in such a small village. Easy to find, nice young woman behind the counter. As she was cooking the fish, I thought - hmm- should be now.... or now... or now. Well, so probably was, so a bit overcooked. Chips were good (glad I saw her salt/vinegar an order or 2 before mine so I could say 'no, thank you' to waaaay too much salt. Got an order of cold slaw. Ok - was a serving of mayo with some cabbage in it. Hope they consider some adjustments! Then would recommend.
