Wenlock Arms in Hackney

It had been about 20 years since I'd visited the Wenlock. I wasn't disappointed. It hadn't gone through a dreadful refurbishment making it a soulless place with an identikit interior. It was still an authentic boozer with an amazing 10 real ales on the pumps. There was also a selection of craft ales for those who prefer keg. A DJ was playing an eclectic mix of music, from The Cure and Edwyn Collins to GC Cameron and George Benson. We had a great time, and it won't be another 20 years before I go back.

Superb 'proper' pub with a great range of beers.

Seems like quite a rare find in London - cask ale centric place with quite a young crowd and good atmosphere. Staff are lovely and beers were on point.

Excellent pub about 10 minutes walk from Old Street Station. Eight cask beers on handpump when I last visited including a stout. A few seats outside. Very friendly and helpful staff. Dartboard and piano!

Great pub with great selection of beers at affordable prices. Gluten-free beer on cask is a real plus for those who need it, and quite a rarity. Really pleased to have discovered this place and will be back.

Good range of real ales, mainly at £5 - very reasonable for the area.

Proper London boozer. Locals, techies, yuppies, hipsters and senior citizens. Great beer. And a great landlord who chooses his staff well. Pies and toasties if you eant hot food. The rest is booze and disco.

Can't rate the food as we didn't try any, although it seemed to be more snacks or light bites such as toasted sandwiches. A really good range of cask and keg beers which I'm reliably informed by my husband we're really well kept. You really feel as though you've been transported back in time in a good way! A proper gem!

We were visiting London on business and sought a good genuine ale house. Found a cracker. Staff and locals were very friendly and great atmosphere. Great selection of beer!

My boss said this pub was decent and he was right

Il pub si trova all'angolo con Shepherdess Walk Park, in una zona di Hackney che confina con un' area residenziale che alterna grattacieli e casette tradizionali. Le auto parcheggiate nelle strade (Tesla, Mercedes, Mclaren, Bmw...) parlano di una "high upper class". Buona selezione di birre, ambiente rilassato. Il pub sembra frequentato da "persone normali". Almeno in un una domenica sera di giugno 2023, con chiusura alle 22.00 e cucina alle 21.00 già chiusa. Sembra che il venerdi sia dedicato alla musica, jazz in particolare.

Ambiant and friendly watering hole .

Real ale-focused with intuitive service, albeit on a relatively quiet Wedesday evening. If I had to criticise, I would argue they don’t really have a ‘go-to’ beer - a beer you would want to drink seven pints of. But nonetheless the beers I tried were perfectly kept and well tasty.

EXCELLENT pub, top beer selection, brilliant tunes, lovely open fire, great staff. Just what was needed on a dreary Sunday afternoon.

The pub has a lively vibe on Friday & Saturday nights, making it an excellent destination for those seeking a good time. It's also a great place to unwind and enjoy a chilled drink on a lazy weekend afternoon. The free dart board is an added bonus which is always fun to play. Great place that serves very nice beer. A wide selection of drinks and you can even sit there with your dog. Saw a man with one when I was there and it filled my heart. More places should be like this! Prices were awesome, hope you stay in business for a very long time!

One of London's great pubs. A pub so good I'm reluctant to leave a review because I don't want it to become busier, but it deserves more business even at the risk of a bigger queue at the bar. Friendly staff, nice atmosphere, good music. Come for the real ale and stay for the toasties.

🚇 Old Street 🍺 £5.20 Budvar ❤️ The quintessential London Pub. . The Wenlock Arms is located in a quiet backstreet in Hoxton and is just a ten minute walk from Old Street station. A more picturesque journey would be to walk from Angel tube which means you can stroll along tranquil Regents Canal. . The pub was built in 1835 and is somewhat of a survivor. This pub survived the blitz unlike much of the surrounding area, it also survived demolition in 2010 when developers (shysters) didn’t get their way for once due to a vigorous local campaign that saved the pub. . The decor here is traditional with a horseshoe shaped bar taking centre stage. Around the bar are leather sofa benches with weathered round tables that have seen many a pint placed on them. There’s a dartboard If you fancy a game of arrows and also a Joanna incase someone wants to “Roll out the barrel “ .The walls are adorned with beautiful etched mirrors which complete the old world charm feel to this boozer. . This pub has won numerous awards for its beer, this is a ale and cider drinker’s paradise.There are 10 cask, 10 keg, plus real ciders to wet your whistle. Being the uncultured imbiber that I am, I chose a pint of Budvar which was tip top and very reasonably priced. If you’re a bit peckish then pies and toasties are available. . The atmosphere was relaxed and chilled with a few local punters in and a chap from New York in attendance. The Guv’nor was very chatty with the crowd in and is clearly passionate about his pub. . London has many institutions and for me The London Pub is the most important institution as it binds communities and people together. The @wenlockarms is the quintessential London Pub which epitomises what a London pub should be. 20 years ago when I first went it was one of the best pubs in London. It’s gone through some changes but still one of the best pubs in London.

A brilliant backstreet pub on the borders of Hoxton. Surprise, actually on Wenlock Street. Lovely people behind the bar, service smart and knowledgeable. Beer is good with a fine eclectic choice of ales both on cask and keg. A lovely place to visit!

Top boozer with fantastic beer. Only gripe is the step up to go to loo is not visible and needs highlighting. I went flying (no damage to me other than wounded pride) but the next person may not be so lucky

Still a great pub but at £5.50 for a pint of normal strength cask ale, I won’t be returning in a hurry.

This is a great local pub with excellent atmosphere and a top range of real ales and other beers. The beers rotate which keeps things interesting. The staff are really friendly and the pub has great character. I really like this place, it is everything a good pub should be. Certainly one of the best pubs in East London and has won numerous awards, including CAMRA pub of the year. Will certainly be back.

Been here twice now. Great place if you’re into this kind of place. Tons of great beer and brewer ephemera line the walls and surfaces. The clientele ranges from the old locals in the afternoons to the young professionals in the evenings. The bartenders are quite friendly. The food seems limited to packaged snacks, but probably wouldn’t eat anything from this place, prepared or packaged. And the beer is great. Has a strong selection that changes on a regular basis.

Excellent independent local pub, nestled away on a backstreet of Islington. A rare find in London nowadays. Excellent beers and bar snacks. Friendly staff who seem to be enjoying themselves as well as being attentive at the bar. Great music on Saturday night too, and a happy and friendly crowd. I'll definitely be back soon!

Genuine, friendly pub with a great David vs. Goliath story. The place is down-to-earth, pleasant, and has "real" ales from a cask. It's not far from transit nor from the canal, so worth dropping in for a pint if you happen to be nearby

Very rare to find a pub in London that hasn’t been bought out by some massive corporation (looking at you Green King and Young’s), so to walk into an actually ‘genuine and authentic’ pub in central London is a rare treat. Fantastic selection of beers and the staff know how to have a good time. Always makes a difference when the folks behind the bar look like they’re enjoying themselves. Very quickly has become my favourite pub in central London!

What a lovely pub. Went there yesterday to get a coke whilst waiting for a lift home after eye surgery at Moorfields. The manager was so nice gave me my drink on the house when I explained the eye patch and said I just wanted to sit on that little bench outside. We had a lovely chat and I went outside to sit down. A young man out there (a customer of the pub) made sure I was ok and got his friend to get out of the way of the bench -aw! Wow - nice nice vibe - thank you!!

Best pub in North London. Wonderful beer, great choice and the staff are just so friendly. A must to visit and if you live anywhere in North London make it your local. They really do deserve all the success they can get. A real gem.

My favourite London pub! Been there so many times. Always go back when in the area! Unique place!

The Wenlock Arms is both London's premiere George Michael pub and also (and not coincidentally) London's Best pub. The beer is kept perfectly and absolutely cracking (try the house brewed Block beers). The toasties are addictive. The staff are all legends. The vibes are huge. Whether you are coming along for a swift one on a Tuesday, of bedding in for the piano sing along sessions on a Sunday afternoon you will be charmed. Unless you don't like George Michael, in which case you don't deserve nice things.

A real gem of a pub, probably my favourite london boozer.

Cracking boozer. Five stars all round. Good selection of beer. Roaring fire on a wet and rainy day. Plenty of seats available just before 5pm Friday. Staff seem to follow covid safe guidance to a tee: Mask up, sign in, order at the bar, find a seat, beers delivered to your table.

The Wenlock Arms is the best pub in London, hands down. The Christmas party was off the charts. Treat yourself to a pint or three here.

It's a good old pub. Unfussy, knowledgeable barman when I visited who knew the history of the pub going back. Unfortunately the world famous hot salt beef sandwich is no longer served, but we guessed times change. Draft craft, and keykegs offer a good choice of real ale. On the whole, nice cosy pub with real log fire.
