Joke of a place. Stopped here when it was dark and raining with my wife to have dinner after a long drive. Didn’t see any signs but apparently there is signs for parking in their own pub car park. I just recieved a 100 pound parking fine as a paying customer. This is ridiculous when we spent a lot of money in the pub I feel we have been setup because neither my wife or I saw the signs and after reading more reviews it appears a lot of others haven’t either

First visit in nearly 3 years despite living only 1.5 miles away, mainly because it was terrible before! This time...what a difference! Warm and welcoming staff, actually felt like a PUB THAT SERVES FOOD rather than my hated RESTAURANT THAT SELLS BEER! I am not a lover of chain/company owned pubs (in 28 years working in the trade, I know what I'm talking about) however, the staff here have got it right! Well done to all of you...you've got a new, regular, local customer, who will be proud to call the Waterloo Cross "MY LOCAL"!

Stopped here on the way to catch a train and had always had a great meal. Seems things have changed and gone down hotel. Was a Sunday lunch but place was almost deserted… ordered a roast meal which whilst a good portion, was flavourless and sloppy. The Yorkshire was huge and hard and the veg just pain and warm. The gravy swamped the plate with the red cabbage and flowed onto the table when the waitress put it down, but she didn’t notice (or want to). We paid extra for cauliflower cheese - insipid sauce with hardly any cheese over a stalk of cauli which was rock hard. Had we not been in a rush to get the train, we would have bought all this to the staffs notice but just didn’t have time. Overpriced for a very average and sub par meal. Shame as setting and decor are great

We went here for a Friday lunch. It was nice and quiet with plenty of parking (put your registration in at the bar to park). We ordered burgers, sundaes and a children's meal. It all came out quickly and was very tasty. It has a lovely cosy pub feeling inside and seating outside if you prefer. The staff were lovely and friendly. We will definitely be back again.

The staff were fantastic and food good however, I know this is my own fault however still feel very upset and will never go back to the pub because of the parking. Recently a parking meter has been installed, which again was my fault for not seeing and using, but I have received a fine of £100 for not paying to to park... I understand paying for your mistakes but £100 and threatening letters is far too extreme. We are all struggling with money in life why be so greedy? I spent £50 in the restaurant that night. Greed is killing this country.

We have used the Pinhoe Hoard, Exeter and the Skylark, Wellington the former is dirty, offers poor service and poorly cooked food, the latter offers inconsistent service and food. Although we do not use either of these restaurants anymore my wife and I thought we would give a Marston pub one last chance. We had used Waterloo Cross in the past and have experienced a mediocre to good service but this time we wish we hadn't bothered for the following reasons. 1. The menu was rathered unimaginative and did not offer much to choose from. 2.My wife ordered a White Zinfandel and received a blush, which she detected and complained to the bar staff. My Pinot Grigio was ok. 3. My wife then ordered a Pimm's and it was served in a wine glass, quite unusual. My wife asked me to try it as it tasted "strange". A women on the next table asked us about the Pimm's as her 's also tasted "odd" as did her daughter's who had an orange juice and lemonade. Together we went to the bar and the barman admitted the lemonade was "off". 4. The final straw - I was going to order a roast beef carvery but I heard one of the service personnel tell a customer they only had roast turkey left. It was just after 18.00 on a Sunday! Would I visit a Marston restaurant again? Absolutely not they've blown their last chance as far as we are concerned. Whatever the pub and area managers get paid is far too much as they are obviously not doing the job they are paid for - managing.

Drove into Car Park , signs everywhere saying Pay to Park . Needless to say drove out again straightaway . Later found out that if you eat in restaurant or stay at hotel you have to register at the Bar and Parking is free . Clearer signage should be visible stating this as I’m sure we are not the only ones to drive away from this pub

The service and food was excellent. We were a group of twelve. Just perfect. However, there is a charge for parking at this establishment, but don't pay if you are using the restaurant or hotel. There is a registration pad on the bar to do this. Also, I found it difficult to book online. The software company were supposed to email me back with confirmation but didn't. I found it earlier to phone directly. Please don't let this put you off though. We had a fantastic evening here.

Absolutely awful, paid a lot money for a Christmas Day dinner, everything was tepid except the potatoes, and as for using slimy undercooked frozen Brussels sprouts, well there is no excuse for that. The only aspect that really nice was the starter, which I think must have been bought in! Never again, very poorly executed and disorganised, (phoned three times to query various things including whether I have fully paid! Fortunately I kept receipt.) It may cost twice as much but next year it’s the Devon Hotel, they really DO know what they are doing, with real chefs and not “cooks”.

We went for a works night out. Looked up online and it said they shut at 11pm. So taxi's booked for 11pm. There was 18 people in our group. The food started to come out and parts of it was cold. It took about 10 mins before all our group had there food. The portion size was very small. If it wasn't for the fact that work had paid I would have sent it back. They rang the last orders bell at 10pm and wanted us all out by 10:20pm. This meant that we all had to try to get hold of the taxi firm. I am local and this is not the first time we have had issues with this pub. It is a shame as it is very nice in there. If you are after food I would recommend you go to the halfway house in Willand.

We live locally in Tiverton but have not used this facility very often previously. Went here for lunch last Thursday, we ordered a sirloin steak and a fish & chips from the main menu. The food and service was excellent and we both finished the meal. We had a 30% off voucher which made the final price amazing. We are returning again this week and hope everything is just as good as last time. One tip, make sure you pay your parking charge before you enter the bar but hand over the ticket upon ordering and the cost is refunded from your bill.

I’ve used this pub for years for an occasional lunch or evening meal with family and fiends. Decided to call for lunch today - to find I have to pay up front for parking, select how long I’m going to be there (that would depend on how busy it is in the pub wouldn’t it?) then pay upfront for the food order as they can’t “swipe a card and open a tab for the family meal”… Will not be returning - better value elsewhere.

I arrived at this pub, late evening, to meet a friend who was staying at the pub overnight. As it was dark when I arrived, I didn't see any reference to parking charges. Nor did I expect to have to pay to use a rural pub car park. To my surprise today I have received a fine from Premier Park, £60 if I pay immediately, or £100 if not, for the 26 minutes I was there. I should mention this review is not about the food, drink or customer experience. I have purely written this to warn you about the charges, so that you do not get annoyingly penalised like me.

The waitress 'warned' us there was a long wait for meals. She had an aggressive attitude and when we joked is that a threat or a promise, were told to take it how we wanted. When the food eventually arrived her hair was brushing across it, so of course it was rejected and she went to get another. Amazingly the waiting time immediately came down to 2mins as she obviously returned with the same plate of food. When asked if this was a fresh order she assured it was!!! Later in the evening the chef wandered out, on seeing the state of his clothes we felt ill. Will NOT be eating there again. Really disappointed.

Stopped with husband on the way back home from Exeter for lunch. Ordered a fish finger sandwich and chips for myself, husband had dirty fries. Waited a long time for the food, but they were reasonably busy, so understandable. Dirty fries were ok, however the sandwich was very poor, 2 thin slices of bread, couple of bits of salad and what looked and tasted like 2 of the cheapest fish fingers money can buy. One positive is that the Staff were friendly, but sadly won’t bother returning.

Food quality was very low. The first plate was cold and disgusting with the driest turkey. I complained and was given a ‘new meal’ they had replaced the turkey and added more sprouts. The stuffing, peas and vegetables were the same with the worst ones removed. These were microwaved and put back on my order. We also ordered a lasagne as a replacement which was oily, and poorly made being clearly microwaved due to inconstant temperature throughout. The salad was also old and wilting. Table booked in advance for four people for 12.30pm. Only a few other tables occupied. We ordered drinks and were told to let them know when we were ready to order. We were not told that there was a 45 mins wait for food until we went to order 20 mins later! After an hour we were still waiting. Husband asked what was happening and was told the lady behind the bar would find out. Ten minutes later she came to the table, apologised and offer free drinks. We didn't really want anymore but order a couple. When she returned with them she said the meals were being plated up. Another 10 minutes later the meals finally arrived. The scampi and gammon were luke warm, fried eggs hard and peas cold. No one came to check everything was OK whilst we were eating and when the waitress collecting the plates was told her response was "well I don't know about that, I picked them up as soon as they were on the hotplate". Admittedly they did take 10% off the bill but that hardly compensates for the off hand attitude or poor standard of the food. We won't be visiting again!

Family gathering so a mutually convenient place selected. Time from ordering to arrival of food almost an hour, and then the beef was so tough a number of the party had to send theirs back...once all had finally eaten we considered dessert only to find the kitchen was closed from 3.00-4.30 so that was not possible (we had no idea this was the case, and as people were coming and going while we were there it seemed like the sort of place that served all day). Coffee was ordered, but described by most as very bitter. Please note the small print, if you would like the Sunday roast deal you MUST order all courses in one go or offer does not apply... and orders have to be given at the bar not at the table. Would just like to say the lass who had to single handedly cover the bar, taking food orders and serving did not stop, and certainly did her best.

Waitress came over suddenly whilst I had a mouth of food, so I couldn’t inform her. Decided to just leave after our meals were finished as it didn’t matter to much as our company will reimburse us for the food so it doesn’t come out of my pocket really. Anyway I thought I’d inform the waitress as I walked out, approached her in a friendly way and said “ you might want to inform your chef that one of the burgers was raw on the middle “Her response was “ok thank you”No apology, just turned around and continued on with her next task. The restaurant wasn't busy but you would have thought they were catering for the 5000, the length of time it took to produce a couple of slices of shoe leather. For a sunday roast it was awful. The beef was dried out and so thick I couldn't eat half of it. I had 2 small yorkshire puddings, my husband got half a large one - weird? We had a small boat of gravy with - 'do you want some more?' Obviously we needed more to drown the boot leather!!

Only £6 for a curry. Decent choice of beers. Very friendly service. Nice curry, choice of four (I think), enough to eat unless you are really hungry. As usual not many staff so a wait to order and a wait for the food to arrive. If you are okay with that (we were) then give it a go. There is a full menu too at nearly double the price and more. Still fair value, but I wouldn’t put up with the waiting at that price level.

As above, does what it says on the tin. The atmosphere from the staff is shocking and really unwelcoming and to be honest they need to upgrade the quality of the food before they act above their station.

It has been a while since we came here so a visit was long overdue. Arrived at 12 where we saw a sign saying long wait for food this wasnt a problem, ordered drinks at the bar and a waitress said she would come over to take food order. She apologised for delay as fryers was being warmed up - there was no rush and happy to wait. The pub was having a new menu the following week so a few items was unavailable, luckily for us this wasn't a problem. Ordered from 2 for £10 menu which was burger and fish n chips. Both really nice.

Our favourite pub. The staff are always friendly and do their best to communicate waiting times etc. The pub is cosy and welcoming. The extensive menu has something for all tastes and changes a couple of times a year so there is always something new to try (their plant based burgers are delicious!). On the one occasion we did have an issue with waiting times the staff were apologetic and sincere and really went out of their way to make sure we left happy (thank you to the manager). We will definitely be coming back and always recommend the Waterloo to our friends and family.

Staff seemed stressed but not busy. Lots of cars in their carpark but hardly anyone inside the pub. Will not be going again

Six of us arrived and the board said 20 minute wait for food. By the time we were ready to order it was up to 45 minutes. They didn't seem to be especially busy but we didn't get our food for 60 minutes. Far too long to wait to eat.

Travelling from Manchester to Cornwall. Didnt want to go to an overpriced and rubbish service station. Found this pub half a mile from service station. Nice space, food is ok, perfectly acceptable. Overall an enjoyable and relaxing stop.

Firstly, I have to say how friendly, welcoming and efficient the two waitresses were and despite how slow the food service was, they were helpful, patient and their calm manner ensured a pleasant atmosphere in the dining areas.

I'm perhaps biased in favour of this place because a very lovely Persian told me here that she loved me. Wait. She retracted weeks later. Sigh. And that leads me to this nice pub: like me with ladies. It tries. It really tries.

Terrible waited an hour which we were happy to do! Then when food came out which was tikka masala and gammon. When got home daughter was very ill through out the night which she had chicken masala. On the 19th feb Contacted Waterloo cross to speak to manager/ess. Surprise she wasn’t in so spoke to supervisor but she didn’t know what to do so she would find out. Apparently she contacted head office and they were sending her a form to send to me which she rang me back with in 10- 15 mins telling me this but it’s now a month later and I still haven’t received this form via email, contacted head office and I’ve been escalating the complaint through resolver which head office of marston use. All I would like is a kind repayment back but they seem not interested so I kindly wouldn’t eat at another marston place again

A group of friends and I meet here every few months for a meal, But we are going to find somewhere else to go now. Last Tuesday we met at 7pm, we ordered by 7.15 and it took an hour for our food to come. This is the longest we have ever had to wait. We have always known that the service is slow.My food when it came was mediocre to say the least. Very disappointed indeed

Had lunch here today, food ok but felt very uncomfortable at how what appeared to be a new member of staff was being spoken to by another member of the team. It was obviously very upsetting for the young girl concerned. We will not be returning if this is how staff are spoken to in front of customers.

What a little gem of a restaurant. We were greeted by 2 lovely waitresses and shown to a table. Delighted to find they offer table service. The atmosphere was wonderful and the service was great. The food served was of a high standard and delicious! We had a really lovely time catching up with our friends over lunch and will definitely be back. Highly recommend the Waterloo Cross!

Booked for an early evening roast as we were staying with family in a neighbouring village. We all had roast dinner. Myself being vegetarian opted for the nut roast. Absolutely delicious. Meats well cooked and plentiful. Food well presented and hot. Crumble and salted caramel cheese cake for desserts. Again delicious. I would most definitely recommend this pub as a place to dine and catch up with family and friends. We will be returning.
