When we walked in there was a weird smell and the staff was very unwelcoming. We ordered our drinks and when they arrived the waitress spilled them all and it was just awkward. Then she bought out our new drinks, I ordered a piña colada which was rubbish and I'm sure there was no rum in it at all, it just tasted like grainy coconut milk. My friends paid £3-something for a can of CocaCola and about £3 for a small bottle of water. Then the food came and I had ordered a beef dish... But somehow there was no beef in my dish, instead it was some dry chicken or turkey. When it came to pay I asked for the service charge to be removed because it was a rubbish experience however the waitress said "the service charge is option but you have to pay"?!?! After about 15 saying I don't have to pay we ended up paying it as we had to be somewhere. Afterwards we spoke to another person we knew who had been there and was told he and his wife went there once and ended up having money taken from their bank account as they paid with debit card and their bank contacted them saying fraud had been committed. We then went back to speak to the manager to get our service charge back and the manager was very hostile however after a lot of persistence she gave in. I'd never recommend this place.

Despite the name ( granted the full name does say Chinese) do not look to eat here if you are looking for Vietnamese food. The choices of dishes from Vietnam are very few.The restaurant itself is very standard if slightly tired and requiring a good clean ( not dirty, just unkempt) the attention from the staff is hit and miss ( had to ask to order drinks and had to ask twice for our bill) and the food is slightly above average. However, The sizzling fillet steak in Sambal sauce was very good. All in all a standard UK Chinese meal. But not what we thought we were going to enjoy ( Vietnamese)

We went here for my brother's 40th. We chose set menu A and the food was lovely. My stepdad kept saying it was the best chinese he's had (and he's fussy!). The service was great - the staff were so friendly and helpful. We told them when we got there that it was my brother's birthday and at the end of the meal, they turned the lights down and brought out a small Victoria sponge cake for him with a candle in it, which was lovely. I would definitely go back.

I visited this restaurant after the tour of Greenwich observatory and it seems like an excellent restaurant seen from the outside. But it turned out that I was totally wrong. The staffs are incredibly RUDE and they have NO SERVICE at all. The food I ordered was also awful. I ordered BEEF rice noodle and they gave me something like raw beef. I said something because I could not distinguish what the things exactly were because it tasted like UNCOOKED RAW PORK. More seriously, I had stomachache and headache rightly in the evening on the day I came to this restaurant. I could not owe my illness to the restaurant without any certain evidence, and seen from previous comment, someone had almost the same experience with me, such a coincidence really deserved to be suspected . Briefly speaking, highly not recommend.

I was in Greenwich with an old mate on a Saturday night, neither of us had been in here in years so suddenly walking past it decided we would give it a try. The place was very busy but we were found a table and were soon looking through the menu. At first we couldn't decide if we would have the set menu for two at £22 a head, or order a selection of items from the menu.In the end we decided on the later, as a, it looked an awful lot of food and b, we didn't reckon on spending that much. So, we ordered 2 lots of prawn dumplings, spare ribs, spicy prawns and ginger, noodles, rice plus some beers and one or two other dishes I can't remember! The food soon arrived and although it looked a huge amount of food spread over the table we devoured the lot - it was delicious, just as good as I remembered from previous visits.Looking casually around at other peoples dishes sat close by the variety and quality looked every bit as good as ours had been.In the end, the bill no surprise, came to more than the set menu we had originally turned down as too expensive!! However, it was worth it. The only minus point was they add a 10 percent service charge to the bill, where as personally I think people should be left to tip if they think the service and food has warranted it.We both enjoyed our meal and wouldn't hesitate to go back or recommend it.

A tutti BUON APPETITO!!!

We have frequented this restaurant often over the years and have always found it to provide consistently enjoyable oriental food. Our recent visit was no exception. It is regularly frequented by oriental customers which we always take to be a good sign of authenticity in the food being offered. Whilst our choices were dishes well known to British tastes i.e. crispy duck, honey and mustard pork, sweet and sour chicken, shredded spicy beef etc, all dishes were well cooked and very flavoursome. Unlike the apparent experiences of other customers who have reviewed, we found the service to be efficient and friendly. If you enjoy oriental food which has been adapted to British tastes, I don't think you will be disappointed.

Used to go here years ago for the buffet which was fantastic - fresh, quality and delicious. It was a real stand out Chinese. Popped in here yesterday, however, and the buffet appeared to have completely gone. Ordered off the set menu which was quite nice but I left feeling slightly disappointed as it wasn't the same standard as before. No real 'Wow' factor in terms of food, presentation or service. Like I said food was nice but not amazing and they whacked service charge on the bill automatically for what boiled down to mediocre service/experience.

I'm glad I'm not the only one on Tripadvisor that thinks this is a terrible restaurant. I took my wife and little one there for dinner last Saturday, hoping to have a pleasant night out. We have been to almost all the restaurants in Greenwich village except this one. Thinking being a Chinese we should get some decent food and service in a Chinese staffed restaurant, we were shocked by the experience we got in there.First of all once we got into the door, straight away we were treated like a couple with a youngster is not their kind of target customer that would splash lots of money on their food. So we were left about 10 minutes to be asked for some drink. Then a flat faced waitress turned up asking what do we want for drink. Obviously a coke and a glass of tab water is going to be badly condemned here. From there, everything went downhill. As the first timer, we just wanted to order some simple platter as a start. The waitress was holding an annoyance and hatred face all the way during our ordering. Then threw a line 'Is that it?' (in Chinese) When I asked her if they accept credit card, she looked at me like I'm a kind of person not fit for using a credit card, and told me cash only. Just when I'm about to walk out of the restaurant to get some cash, I saw there's a big sign on their door saying they accept all kinds of cards. Confirmed with other dull faced staff, they DO accept cards. Then after about half an hour, our food arrived. I don't want to describe more but I had another dinner after we arrived back home. The food was just appalling. It even can't be compared to some cheap takeaways. Greasy, salty, scarce. Then we were charged 10% service fee on the bill for the 'excellent' service we received. I'm surprised they still can survive in the area as it really brings shame to the nice warm surroundings around Greenwich village area.

As local residents we thought we'd try out a different restaurant to our usual haunts. Unfortunately the service was poor (comments were made about us needing a larger table, the woman serving us was brusque and commented abruptly on many of our choices, we asked several times for things like soy sauce and water before they came, the plates were whisked away whilst we were still chewing our final mouthful) and the decor left much to be desired. The itself tasted ok, we had the dim sum, seaweed, then squid and spare ribs. The seaweed was quite salty, the dim sum was sticky and nice, the squid ok but covered in chillies (not advertised as such, be warned!) and the ribs were greasy and fatty, but no more so than in other lower end quality restaurants. The bill was more expensive than we would usually expect, coming to over £40 ffor the 2 of us (1 alcoholic drink, 1 coke, plus food as descibed above), with service charge included at £3.77.However, the real downside was only to be discovered this morning. My significant other has been quite ill, and although we can't attribute this directly to the restaurant without being medical examiners, it seems like quite a coincidence. Overall, this seems to be one of those restaurants that looks to make money from tourists by inflating the price and not having to bet on returning customers for continued income. It has rested on what few laurels it has (great location, close to park and hotels, sponsorship of local events, innocence of tourists etc) rather than great food and great service. I wouldn't recommend it, especially not with other establishments so nearby.

This place isn't Vietnamese. It's Chinese and peasant Chinese at best. I've travelled in China and the attitude from the staff at Vietnam Oriental was anything but sophisticated urban. The food wasn't terrible. It was average Dim Sum, the restaurant was clean looking. What was truly shocking however was the service! Cold, hostile and generally deeply unpleasant. I really hope the owners are reading this, if you are, please please take this to heart. In the restaurant tradeYou do not, EVER hand someone the bill in a book/wallet/folder, wait until they have read and closed it before reaching over, reopening it and placing it back in front of the customer!!! What the hell?! Also, most places, I order a pot of Chinese tea for the two of us, you don't start lecturing about charging each of us separately! As for the "service charge" of £2,60? If I'd been in the mood to argue you would've lost that. Guys, get your act together. You have a lot of competition in the area. One last note. Christmas carols on synthesiser? Really?

Plus, just because we're Asian, doesn't mean we're going to speak whatever dialect she speaks. Fortunately, one in our group did, otherwise this would have been an even more disastrous experience.Forget that the name says Vietnam and they offer Chinese food, there are geographically challenged people everywhere. My pho had overcooked noodles and bland soup. This was my second visit. I'd had doubts the first time but was seduced by the other half into thinking my previous concerns were due just to a busy day. Tonight's meal has confirmed to me that the staff are still rude and the food is still inedible. The chicken with cashew nuts was dreadful. I couldn't eat the chicken as it left an unpleasant after-taste. My partner spat his out. The jasmine tea was flat tasting and the 'refresher' alcohol free cocktail was too sweet. Even the tap water had an unpleasant taste and was undrinkable. The carpets were quite dirty and littered. I did think 'well it's been a busy day and they will be hoovered later' but my chopstick fell on the floor and when I picked it up I noticed how dirty it was under the table and next to the wall. This wasn't just a days worth of crumbs. I should have left then. This restaurant is in a very busy area and probably gets a lot of it's customers from passing tourist trade who will not be returning anyway. I will spend my money elsewhere.

These were not to our taste, but we've never tried them before, so this may simply be chicken feet (possibly at there very best!) however, to us they were just a small amount of chicken fat on a fiddly bone.- Amazing vietnamese pancake dumplings with a crispy batter centre. That says it all.- Dumplings, these were average, not bad.- Prawn and chive dumplings, pretty terrible. One was crunchy as if the prawn was not skinned, and it just tasted a bit funky...- Sweet bread chicken and mushroom rolls. These were not to my taste, but my partner enjoyed them when dipped in the following soup...- Laksa (this was main, £6ish) Very nice. Nice sauce. Very good value.- Beer was not badly priced, super chilled and only £4.10 a pint. Dimsum were reasonably priced at £3 eachish.

Strange name for a restaurant that doesn't serve any Vietnamese food, but hey ho. Husband and I stopped here for lunch after a wander around Greenwich Park. Service was fine – prompt but brusque (not rude though). The menu has pretty run-of-the-mill Cantonese/Szechuan dishes but it also offers some more unusual items such as chicken feet and pig intestine for the more daring diner. There’s also a tasty-sounding dim sum menu, but we didn't try this either. Our mixed starter included overcooked prawn toasts, delicious satay chicken skewers and gristly ribs but the main courses were tasty, hot and fresh. As for portion size, we have no complaints at all, these seemed pretty normal to us and the prices were fine. This was fine for lunch but I wouldn't rush back

Why this place is called "Vietnam"? No idea! It is a typical Chinese restaurant with all the unhealthy choices readily available. Horrible food prepared way before your order: the meal was thrown on our table 5 minutes after we placed the order; it was cold and very unappetizing. But the worst is their service: when I told the waitress that the rice was cold and asked to warm it up, she casually replied: "It is cold because you eat too slow". Do I need to say more? Ordentliche frische Dim Sum, ansonsten ok. Freundlich-distanzierte Bedienung. Service hat ziemlich gedauert.

The best place for dim sum in South East London! Quick service, delicious food, efficient staff. Slight twists on some of the traditional dim sum dishes.

My experience at this restaurant was highly stressful and highly un enjoyable at best. The staff were rude and inhospitable, the prices astronomical (for tiny portions), the food tasteless and freezing cold and the atmosphere was worse than the local mortuary to be polite. Mainly I was disappointed at the fact they continually tried to swindle by not bringing the food we had ordered hoping we wouldn't notice (we did!) and charging £1 for tap water. To sum up and in complete honesty beware this is the worst restaurant experience I have ever had.

Greenwich, despite its major attractions carrying World Heritage Site status, remains something of a culinary desert. Unfortunately my visit to Vietnamese Oriental for lunch did little to disabuse me of this prejudice.Despite being called a Vietnamese restaurant, there was not a Pho noodle dish in sight. Rather two menus one serving Chinese dim sum; the main menu Chinese and Sizchuan dishes. I opted for a rather conservative starter of a hot and sour soup followed by a more adventurous pigs' intestine hotpot. The intestines were as crispy as advertised but they weren't in a hotpot but rather stir-fried in a wok with strips of red and green peppers and some in edible chillies. I suppose I should have guessed when I was invited to order the rice, which would otherwise have been in the hotpot, separately.Fortunately a slightly underwhelming lunch was more than made up for by an excellent baroque concert in the splendid surroundings of the Royal Naval College chapel nearby.

Visited this place after a pleasant day out at Greenwich Park and wish I had brought a picnic instead. The staff were abrupt, rude and lazy and possibly the worst family meal we have ever had or ever likely to have as we would never return there. The green tea was awful and in fact I’ve had green tea bags that have been better. The food was substandard and bird portions, the spare ribs consisted of spare bone, the seafood soup came in a egg cup size bowl and contained no seafood but something that looked like glue. The main course consisting of noodles was both cold and bland, as for taste I can only say packet noodles have more taste. Also guarded tap water as if their life depended upon it and advised me as I asked for lemon in my water they would be charging for that.To summarise it is overpriced and the food is less than acceptable and unless you enjoy wasting money and being subjected to a completely hostile environment I suggest you walk on by as there are many restaurants nearby and anywhere will be better than there

Slightly underwhelming experience; possibly due to raised expectations of something different for Vietnam which were dampened when opening the menu to find specialities in Szechuan and Peking. We did go for some adventure by ignoring the set meals; really enjoyed the Dim Sum. The sizzling beef in garlic/ginger was tender and tasteful but the squid was too 'subtle' for me...or did not taste of much, was cold and rubbery.

I chose authentic chinese food, loved by Chinese from Hong Kong. The food, (which happened to be edamame, pigs intestines and bitter melon in black bean sauce) turned out to be delicious. A combination of rich meat, subtle and excellently balanced sauce, with vegetables cooked just right was a revalation. The bill came, and it was much cheaper than I could have hoped. The decor is plain, and lets the food speak for itself, and the service was prompt and friendly.I shall definately go back and choose other delicious things from their menu, next time I am in Greenwich.

Visited this restaurant on 17 August 2013 with my boyfriend because we were tired of eating pub food and wanted something different. The menu is very large with a wide variety of dim sum and Asian dishes. The spring rolls were the usual Vietnamese rolls I am used to having in a Vietnamese restaurant. The main courses were good. The service was really the worst I have ever had in any restaurant and very rude. We were not asked for a drink order, when we asked about menu items we were barked at like dogs. I asked for some sugar with my tea and was told that "In China we do not put sugar in our tea." The restaurant is not in China or even China Town. People who came in after us got their food before we did. Horrible service. Will never return. Would rather eat from a food cart on the street. Also overpriced for what was served. Typical ripoff. I don't remember the last time I didn't leave gratuity at a restaurant.

A good selection on offer on the menu. We had a set meal as a group and a variety of drinks - non-alcoholic juices (which came with a strawberry and cocktail umbrella - much to the amusement of all, as it was for my OH/their father), beers and 1 cocktail. The food was good and plentiful, the service staff were very friendly and helpful, there are high chairs for the small people and it has a busy feeling - although we were not rushed at any time.I would eat here again.

I attended here on a Tuesday evening with my boyfriend for a bit of a change of scenery. Having discovered the restaurant in an online search, we decided to give it a go and we were not disappointed. We shared a couple of starters, and had two delightful king prawn dishes for mains. The chicken satay was huge, tasty and value for money, and the prawn toast although it looked greasy, was delicious and not too heavy. I ordered plain steamed rice to come with my main King Prawn and cashew dish and was amazed by how much there was, I couldn't finish it all. The only negative would be that it could do with a bit of a spruce up in terms of decor. Overall, very good food, and friendly service, we will definitely be returning when we are next in Greenwich.

Took my nephews and neice, aged 3, 7 & 8 after a long day out.Could have been difficult, with 3 youngsters not used to restaurants, but the waitresses made it a pleasure. They taught the children to use chop sticks and were so lovely my niece hugged them on the way out. Food was great. 2 large portioned mains, a veg dish and prawn crackers were enought to satisfy us all. And satisfied we were.

We stumbled across this place just before heading up to the Meantime Brewery tour - and made a note of it's location to visit after. Having been to Vietnam a couple of times, we both love the food and it is always a nice surprise to see a restaurant serving the cuisine (they seem few and far between in the places that we've been to in the UK).On entering, we were led to a table and given menus - at which point it became very obvious that this was not a Vietnamese restaurant at all! The only food from Vietnam that I could see on there was Vietnamese Spring Rolls as a starter. They were good, to be fair. It's just a shame that the food was not as "advertised" (why call a restaurant that when it just serves Chinese food?!), and that the staff were slightly indifferent to our being there. The service charge added to the bill also added to the overall experience! To be fair, we were served decent food at a late hour, but the points above meant that we both left feeling a little disappointed by the experienceDecent food, but don't be fooled by the name - it's 'just' a Chinese restaurant!

We were looking for somewhere for dimsum in Greenwich and this seemed like the only place. The place was empty when we went in there and we were abit worried as we thought it would be a bit rubbish and very touristy due to its location in Greenwich. Pleasantly suprised. My wife is Chinese so she ordered a range of dishes which we would have ordered at a restaurant in China. The staff were amusing and not the best but were fun to deal with. The food was the overall winner and the price wasnt bad either for a lot of food including 2 bottles of wine and dim sum inc service we paid £120. Worth a visit if you want a good Chinese meal.

Vietnam Oriental is an utter hidden Gem in Greenwich and one where me and my partner devour Dim Sum with great regularity. From the outside you would never know and indeed inside it's very trad/simple in decor but the food is what VO is all about. I have only ever eaten the Dim Sum which delivers superb quality dumplings (read: everything) across the board and in our mind is far superior to the Royal China in Canary Wharf. Amazing value too I cannot recommend highly enough and indeed this was a recommendation from a friend the first time we visited. I can't comment on the main menu (chinese primarily) but the room is usually full of both locals and chinese families tucking in. Ignore some of these other reviews we LOVE this place and look forward to every visit which included yesterday hence my review. If you are local and love Dim Sum then i'll in all likelihood see you there. Not fancy but thats not why you'd eat here!

I must admit that I looked at the name and not the Menu and expected something from Vietnam. However I got over the disappointment and had a very nice selection of Dim Sum. Food very tasty and the staff we friendly and helpful. It's also very good value for money, we just had Tea but had 6 different Dim Sum and a rice and curry dish and for 2 people it came to just over £30.

Food was pretty good. We had the Singapore noodles, which was the best of our order. Had a sizzling prawn platter and Szechuan dish as well that I were okay. Service was quick and responsive. However, I am not sure how they manage to call anything Vietnamese, especially since the feature Szechuan and Cantonese food in the menu. Regardless would go back. best of a weak bunch in Greenwich for Chinese.

Four of us went there for lunch on a very sunny Sunday, and managed to get a table with no problem. A good indication of what to expect was the fact that there were a lot of Asians eating there. For a Thursday Night it was 60% busy which gave it a great atmosphere and the service was excellent. I tried the Chinese bottled beer which is lovely definitely recommend and girlfriend got a coke & mixer and for London these were great value (£3.80 for Malibu and coke). On to the starters, we went for the sharing platter with King Prawn, Satay Skewer, rib and changed the last item to seaweed which they kindly did at no additional cost. This was a great platter for only £4.50 next time I think I would get 2 though. We then shared quarter duck which had plenty of meat on it for 6 full pancakes, Crispy shred beef which was excellent not too crispy and good meat inside, and from the specials meal which is on Sunday - Thursday I chose the sweet and sour chicken with rice for only £4.80! For starter, 2 drinks each, duck, 2 mains and tip it all came to only £45 and the food tasted fantastic will be returning in the new year!!

Went there for a late midweek lunch and the place was virtually empty. However this in no way reflects the quality of the food. We chose 6 items from the Dim Sum menu all of which were really flavoursome and were well cooked and presented. The pork buns were especially good and that to me is always a good measure of any dim sum restaurant. We did not look at the a la carte menu, or any of the Vietnamese specialities so cannot comment, but on this lunchtime showing, we would definitely be tempted to return in the evening.Overall a great place to go for lunch, and cheap too – meal for 2 (6 dim sum plates), wine (2 large glasses) and tip for £30. Would definitely recommend.
