Over the past 4 years I have purchased a gift voucher at Christmas for family members who live in Scotland to have High Tea at the Victoria Hotel. I rang as usual to organise the gift voucher via post as normal to be informed by the manager that they cannot accommodate this. All vouchers have to be collected at the hotel in person - I explained I lived in Newcastle so this was not practicable. I asked about posting or an email voucher but was told no they couldn’t. I find this extremely disappointing that there was no flexibility to accommodate my request. Normally I never write reviews but I felt the need to express my frustration about the lack of customer service today.

Visited for lunch with a group of 13. Good selection of dishes on the main menu, plus additional specials, so there was something to suit everyone. Portion sizes were generous and lambs liver and bacon with onion sauce was particularly well cooked. Dessert menu was more limited. Dining room didn't have any annoying background music, so possible to hold a conversation without shouting. Service was friendly and efficient, with the staff happy for everyone to pay their own bills, so avoiding the normal issue of trying to divide the bill up. Good parking behind the hotel.

We stayed at the hotel and needed a late dinner (it was 8 p.m. or thereabouts). We were tired and didn't want to drive around, so we opted for dinner in the hotel restaurant. What a good decision that turned out to be, and what a treat! In addition to excellent, attentive service, we found that the small portions of the entrées still gave us plenty of food. One of us got the small Steak Pie (£6.95), another chose the Lasagne Al Forno (£7.95), and the third chose the evening special (sorry, I don't remember what it was, but it was £6.95). For £21.85, we had a dinner that was delicious and far surpassed the quality of the food we ate at many other restaurants on our trip to the U.K. The value of the food and the service were so good. If I lived anywhere near Edinburgh, I would visit the good people at the Victoria Hotel any time I needed a night away from the kitchen.

On Easter Sunday our eldest son, daughter-in-law and youngest grandson joined my wife and I in going for what we thought was going to be a nice high tea. Boy did we get that wrong! Karen and I have been regular visitors to the Victoria for the best part of forty years but after this disaster we fear our visits are sadly at an end. Four of the five meals were tasteless sub standard fayre. As well as being totally removed from the standards we have been used to other things such as a lack of service were obvious from the off and all agreed afterwards that we should have refused what was offered and walked out. On what is recorded as the hottest Easter Sunday on record, the heating was on full blast and what little comfort we had from the open fire door was cruelly withdrawn when staff closed the said door. Apparently two ladies "imagined" a draft when there clearly was not one, but instead of simply asking two people to move to another table they closed the door! Therefore 45-50 other diners suffered all for the benefit of two people! Great work there Victoria staff. One of the regular young weekend workers was sweating profusely and said that it was torture for him to try and work. Well it was torture for us also. The food was torture, the heat was torture and the one oval plate with scones and cakes was torture. They were all mixed up on top of one another and there were three empire biscuits on the one plate! Pathetic. Over the past ten or twelve years I have posted several excellent and honest views on what was formerly a fine establishment. In fact this is only the second time that I have ever posted a negative comment in almost two hundred reviews and the previous one was because we were grossly overcharged!!!! Whatever is going on behind the scenes, using inferior ingredients etc, we are sorry to say that we cannot see us returning again.

Went with three others to have High Tea at the Victoria. Not many places still doing the traditional high tea. They serve it from 5-7pm. Comes with a large number of main dish choices. Our group had the haddock fish and chips and mushy peas - but others were having steak, macaroni and the rest. The high tea comes with drinks (pots of tea and hot water, which were refilled), a round of toast each (with butter and jam), and once the main dish was cleared away, a plate of scones and cakes arrived! Service was good and friendly, and you could sit at the bar and have drinks before and/or after the meal. Great value for £11.95 each. A tradition well worth keeping.

We sadly visited the hotel for a family funeral meal, and somewhat taken aback when many many more people attended than anticipated . We may have been taken aback - the hotel were not - they swung into action with extra places set, more food conjured up and everyone felt welcome. Would like to say well done to the staff in a difficult circumstance - handled professionally and well - thank you

This is an old merchant's house that has been converted into a small hotel. The rooms are quiet, clean with quaint features like odd corners and corridor doors in strange places There is plenty free parking and very helpful staff. The food is not spectacular with a limited range but it is well served and well cooked. Breakfast was better than some more expensive hostelries. The showers had a good pressure and there was plenty of hot water A nice family hotel that I would use again

Gluten Free High Tea, well they are all doing it aren't they? In my experience, no they are not. This was excellent from the starter to the gluten free battered fish to the gluten free cakes. The non-gluten free dishes were excellent too by all accounts. I believe this hotel/restaurant is under new management and it is serving food every bit as good as I remember it - it went a bit downhill before the takeover I was informed. Service was good and staff were helpful and polite. Food was really good and nothing fancy just good honest food with a decent portion size (maybe too much considering it was high tea). Price was reasonable for the High Tea and normal restaurant menu was also fairly priced as you could take the main course off that menu (at certain times) if High Tea one wasn't suitable which was a nice option to have. We were also booked early for the meal so good that they could accommodate our preference even though outside their normal seating arrangements.

Whilst this restaurant may not be the first choice when visiting the area, it is well worth a look. If you are seeking a traditional High Tea ( no one can tell me why they serve toast before a main meal) then this is one of the only places that serve it all week long and not just at weekends. The staff were very very friendly with a real focus on customer service. The food was fresh well cooked and there were plenty of options. I travelled with a mixed, fussy group and everyone was catered for be that the meat eaters or the vegetarians. Easy access for anyone that may be disabled. When eating in the main dining hall, look up and see the fantastic carvings that were created by the original owners who were furniture makers. Apparently the family still make furniture in the area. A pleasant reasonable meal that will guarantee to you leave content.

My husband and I took our 2 year old grand daughter to the soft play area at lunchtime last Saturday. A lovely guy showed us in and got us seated with a high chair. We both had macaroni cheese with chips ( I asked for garlic bread but they had run out). The mac cheese was from the adult menu but our grand daughter had nuggets, chips and corn on the cob from kids menu. The mac cheese wasn't the best I've ever had but it was OK. Didn't like the chips. The salad was nice. I was back last night, 3 adults and 4 kids. I had the kids mac cheese as I wasn't overly hungry. 2 of the children had this aswell. They're 11 years old and the portion was tiny. Basically a table spoon in a small ashit type plate and 2 tiny bits of garlic bread! It was also nasty and stodgy. We eat out a lot and for the same price, we could have had 10 times better meals anywhere else but chose here for the soft play area. The other 2 adults had the nashville chicken burger but again said it was just ok. The restuarant was quite cold, floors were dirty, main toilets were disgusting, very short staffed, and we waited 25 minutes to order our 1st drink, then another 15 minutes to order food. Will give this place a miss from now on.

Were recommended this place by a friend and they were not wrong, a seafood lovers heaven.had freshly made crab sandwiches and sat at the benches outside. Bought a selection of dressed crab, langoustine and various pates to take away. Absolutely delicious and great friendly service with a smile which is very rare these days. Highly recommend. 😃
