Ok where to start....I really wanted to love this place, French food, jazz and cocktails. Starters. Smoked salmon was nice, however baked camembert was over powering with nothing to balance the strength of the cheese. Mains. Lamb was meagre but nicely cooked however it had a thick layer of inedible fat around each piece of which there were two small pieces Duck was tender and moist but at the end of the day it was a cassoulet costing more than £30. Wine was average for again a £30 bottle. For the prices being charged £15 for starters, £30++ for mains we were very disappointed. I appreciate it was "Fine Dining" but the food didn't warrant the price or live up to expectation. Again salmon starter was good, and the duck was nice but the camembert and lamb were not great. Again apologies for the poor review.

Absolutely delicious dinner on Saturday evening at Velveteen. This gem of a restaurant is located in the heart of Whitby and really is a sanctuary from the busy Whitby centre! Classy, beautiful decor, amazing food, wine & service. The charming french owner Jean-Claude is extremely friendly, taking time to chat to all the diners, and the head waiter Nick and waitress were also superb, providing excellent service. At present it is only open on Wednesday & Saturday evenings, would be great to see it open more!

We were so looking forward to coming to this restaurant as my husband booked this a while ago for my birthday. We were both disappointed and on arrival we didn’t feel welcomed. The menu was small and nothing that grabbed us for starters and only 2 small desserts so we just had mains, my husbands seafood pancake was nice he said but not amazing and we both agreed the alpine fries were an odd texture, my main course of monkfish was swimming in oil and really not enjoyable, we told the waitress who said that she spoke to the chef and it’s oil from the cheeses, it looked split to me, and even if it was oil from the cheeses it just wasn’t pleasant. Yes I got given a shop bought cake for my birthday but I was so underwhelmed by my main course I didn’t appreciate it, we felt it unnecessary and my husband was let down by it being from m & s as he could of just gone and bought me a cake himself and he expected better in an independent restaurant. The chef walked round tables talking to diners but avoided our table as she was told by the waitress before that I didn’t enjoy mine so that was poor form. The couple behind us who walked in with no booking were given a glass of champagne as it was their anniversary, so this added insult to our injury. Overall disappointing and for the prices they charge we expected a lovely experience but it missed the mark and we won’t return.

I reviewed this restaurant in January when we had been to Velveteen for the first time for a leisurely lunch. In my review I commented that I hoped we might be able to return for dinner on our next visit to Whitby over Easter and I'm pleased to say that we were! It is always a bit dangerous when you have had such a lovely experience the first time and revisit, however I can honestly say that it was even better second time around. The food was fantastic (special mention about the fruits de mer which was the highlight), wine exceptional, service spot on attentive but not intrusive and ambience perfect. We also were able to try their cocktail bar during this visit, Cafe Monmatre in the Market Square and I would thoroughly recommend that too! I’ve held off from writing this review but I feel I have to to protect others from what we experienced. I felt embarrassed, humiliated and ashamed. Firstly I’ll say that I am a caterer and have worked in the industry for over 40 years and am well versed with the legalities and regulations within it to protect both the establishments and the customers. The trip to Whitby was my birthday treat from my daughter (with whom I was holidaying) after a very difficult 6 years. I was so excited to be there. We needed lunch and it was raining and everywhere was very full except this place that had two people in it (which should have been a red flag). I do have mobility issues and I was using my sticks and a collapsible frame. We walked in and up the step and were just looking where to sit (two people were sat in the window so it felt unnecessary to invade their space within the empty room). At which point a young man strutted towards us and told me I couldn’t come into the restaurant. That the restaurant didn’t have a ‘licence for disableds’. That we couldn’t couldn’t stay as it wasn’t legal and he would not serve me. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing and explained that I knew he was wrong as no such law existed. At which point he started to laugh at me. He insisted he was correct and walked towards me to block my entering any further. My daughter tried to explain to him as did I but he just laughed at us and told us he was not serving us. We were not allowed into his historic building as it was illegal. That he didn’t care what we said, we had to leave. I was upset. I did tell him he was talking out of his bum. I felt terrible for my daughter and I felt very upset about myself being unacceptable. My daughter did say it was discrimination at the time. Initially I wanted to just forget about it. But it keeps coming back into my mind. I genuinely don’t want anyone else to experience this. My daughter did contact the establishment and has had no response. So I have to take it that they stand by what the laughing young man said and that, as far as they are concerned, ‘disableds’ are illegal. I wasn’t going to do anything but as I say, I believe I have a wider responsibility and platforms like this are necessary for these kinds of experiences to be shared so people can be protected from being made to feel terrible and a very special event being marred. I am now going to make a formal complaint about this discrimination and push it as far as needed to insure no one else ever feels the way I did. When all we wanted was a bit of lunch.

Food was excellent, but possibly a bit over priced. Surf And Turf was£40, but the small lobster and steak would have been better in the £30 region. The fries are air-fryer cooked, so go cold very quickly. I'd have the wonderful potatoes my partner had next time.

Popped in for just a coffee last night, liked the place so much we booked for a meal tonight. The food is stunning, but the banter from other guests and the team gives Velveteen an extra charm (thanks Andrea and Brett). Loved it all

Goats cheese tart lovely, and service was good, and generally expensive...... But £4.00 for 2 carrots... I will say no more🤔🙄
