Very slow service, even though plenty of staff about. Full breakfast was slow to arrive and served on a barely warm plate, was nearly cold by the time I’d finished, so didn’t really enjoy it. Coffee was also weak. Had been earlier in the year too and thought it must have been an off day then, but no, about the same. Pity it had been a nice place a few years ago when we used to visit.

What a gem of a place this is. Called in on the off chance today & managed to get a table for lunch. It is a very busy cafe & by the length of queue it is also very popular but I can see why. The food was delicious. We had the cold seafood platter & the Vanessa Trio & both were superb. The seafood was very fresh & the homemade chips were delightful. Staff were attentive & friendly. We were a party of 3 and placed and ordered 2x lattes, 1x tea,1x rhubarb and pistachio tart and 1x millionaires’ shortbread. We were presented with a bill for £20.20. No problem with the price of the drinks. However, the tart had an eating in price of £4.75 which was an 80p mark up on the takeaway price…..fair enough. Please could someone explain why the £3.75 shortbread had a higher mark up of £1.75 on the takeaway price and was charged at £5.50?……nothing short of a rip off! My wife had been dealt with abruptly and quite rudely by a member of staff when asking whether there was a table available at the front of the cafe. Will never go here again.

We ordered food and drinks to be served at the same time and were assured that was not a problem. The food arrived without the drinks. We asked again for the drinks and were told that the drinks person was very busy and we’d just have to wait! We’d eaten our food before the drinks arrived about 10 minutes later. Little by way of apology for what should be a simple process of communication between 2 points of service. Sadly won’t be coming here again.

Food looks lovely, and a little on the expensive side. How you can charge nearly double for a sandwich just to eat in or outside is beyond me. But, the lack of please or thankyou from staff is horrendous, especially when as I say it's on the expensive side. Staff need to smile and not look as if the hate each other.

A gloriously sunny day and we enjoyed glorious delicious food here!! A lovely outdoor seating area and the only slight criticism is that they could do with some umbrellas for hot sunny days as quite a few people said it was really too hot to be without any shade. That said , my goodness the food was just gorgeous!! If you are in town please do yourself a favour and eat here. We were in town for a long weekend and typically ate here on our last day!! I’ve already tried to recreate the halloumi salad with roasted veg which I ate here, concluded that it’s never going to taste as nice!! Plenty of very friendly staff means that you don’t have to wait ages for service and tables are cleared promptly . If it’s busy, which I’m sure it always must be, go for a walk around and go back, or just wait …. It’ll be worth it. Excellent place !

Sadly, another poor experience from Vanessa's outside cafe. I visited at 10.30 on Friday morning. You have to ' 'wait to be seated', but no staff are there, and there was no queue, so my sister and I went for an empty table. The waitress appeared, chastising us for not waiting, and immediately asked for the order. My sister was talking to some friends , who had vacated the table immediately before us. I said I was waiting for my sister to join me. After waiting for 10 minutes to be served, my sister asked if she could place an order for our drinks, the same waitress said "I'm just taking a payment. I came earlier, but you were busy chatting", and walked off. How absolutely rude! Had it been a different occasion, I would have picked up my bag and walked away to Cafe Nero around the corner - or any other of the many cafes in the area. I have finally kicked this place into touch - too much better competition.

Service varied between brusque and good , all our drinks , tea and coffees were very good quality ; these were spoilt by the way they were brought ,one cup of coffee was put down severely resulting in a pool of coffee in the saucer. No replacement saucer offered although on request a new napkin was brought . I asked for a glass of water with my coffee and was told rather shortly it was in the next room and to help myself . Little things spoilt our experience such as a burnt tea cake and the fruitcake with a wedge of Wensleydale cheese which sounded delicious on the menu being in actuality a fruitcake bun with a thin slice of triangular cheese . The tables are very close together and when leaving or arriving it can be difficult to manoeuvre into the allocated table and a little claustrophobic.

Very disappointing, considering the good reviews we’d read. First, we’d booked, but the table we were directed to was squeezed in between two other already occupied tables. They weren’t especially busy and thinking about it we should have been offered a choice of tables. We were so close we could have eaten off our neighbour’s plates and it was impossible to have a conversation without being overheard. Second, they welcome dogs and the one that arrived next to us plonked it’s snout on our table. It might not have done this if Vanessa’s had tables a little further apart or if they had an area specifically for owners with pets. Third one of the knives we received wasn’t clean, so I asked for another one - no apology! Fourth my sultana scone was so dry and so crumbly it disintegrated when I cut it in half and attempted to spread anything on it. Fifth the coffee came with a tiny piece of complimentary flapjack - this was undercooked and tasted of raw flour, so I spat it out. We didn’t make a fuss, but obviously won’t be going again.

We sometimes take the dog and they are always very welcoming to her with sometimes giving her little treats that she loves. We sit both inside and out with her. They sometimes take on young summer time hires from the local area and they are all lovely but please be aware some of them are still learning as they are knew to the job, but they definitely try their hardest and do very well. The little shop downstairs also has some lovely items. Would definitely recommend for lunch if you are popping into the centre of beverley. Please be aware the seating inside is up a flight of stairs so even though it is great it’s not very disabled friendly but that’s just because the building is rather old being in beverley, but you can definitely sit out the front on a nice day!

Visited for lunch reunion with a friend. Initially, the service was very prompt, and our drinks were served almost immediately, but were not hot. However, we had to wait half an hour for our food, and I noticed that a couple who arrived much later than us were served at the same time. My friend had gluten free salmon and cucumber sandwich, which he said was good. I had fishcakes off the light bites menu, which were extremely disappointing. They were very overcooked, dry and pretty bland and tasteless - no seasoning or flavouring, such as herbs. The salad consisted of limp flat-leaf lettuce, cucumber, tomato and some red onion. I ate half of the dish and that was a struggle. Definitely not worth £9.50. No-one came to ask if our food was OK, so I didn't give feedback at the time, but have done so since, and received an apology. It is always embarrassing to complain or give negative feedback when eating with someone else - but I would have done so if we had been asked. I have only ever had a good experience with Vanessa's food and produce, especially breakfast and take away buffets, so this was a real let down. I don't like the rather cynical practice of serving coffee up to half an hour before food, then asking if we want more drinks? I might go back there - but have breakfast or a teacake/scone and ask for my coffee to be served with the food.

On a very warm but blustery Monday, we seated ourselves outside for eating at Vanessa's, as there were plenty of tables in the Saturday Market. After reading previous reviews and looking at the menu there were plenty of choices that we three could enjoy. We...

Busy, but it's hugely popular and rightly so, good food reasonably priced, nice polite staff, eat in or outside, recommended👍

Superb venue and food but absolutely terrible couple of staff at the time of attending. Marshalled into a seat of their choice not ours. No reserved tables but they interrupted progress to ensure one was sat as they wished. Very unwelcoming and not handled professionally...

Popped in yesterday 14/6/23 for lunch, opted for cold fish platter. FANTASTIC! Smoked raw/ fresh salmon, prawns, crab pattie, brown crusty bread, butter, salad, chips. This was all meant for one! We shared it! Everything tasted fresh, perfect. Served by friendly attentive staff. I rate this place the BEST EATERY IN BEVERLEY. Much Respect to all concerned.

Ordered 2 coffees and 2 bacon sandwiches to go, they said the bacon sandwiches would be 5 minutes so me and my mum took a seat on one of their 3 empty tables outside. We were told to leave by a member of staff as we weren’t allowed to sit there and rudely gestured at the sign even though we was waiting for food from their cafe?? I have a bad foot and my mum is in her 60s, did you want us to just stand inside holding 2 hot coffees? Apparently so. Bacon sandwiches were mostly fat, coffees were nice and so was the bloke who made them, won’t be coming back though, also costs a fortune.

Food OK. Staff friendly and helpful. There are better places to eat and give bettervalue. From all the recommendations we had been given we were disappointed.

Good for lunch and nice to sit outside when warm. Food was nice and wasn’t a long wait. Quite expensive though.

Very popular cafe/delicatessen with good reason ... It's excellent quality 👍 The cafe is upstairs so elderly or disabled may find the staircase a bit much.

Just had our annual Xmas family dinner at The Dog & Duck and it was fantastic! Food was delicious especially the festive cheesecake! Staff were very helpful, friendly and hard working. Would definitely recommend this place but remember to book a table as it does get busy.

Today I purchased 6 cheese straws from Cooplands in Driffield. These cheese straws were then carried home safely in amongst the rest of my shopping from various other shops this morning. When it came time for my sister to eat these cheese straws, she put 3 on her plate. She ate two of the 3 with no problem and then when she got to the third cheese straw she took two bites and let out a very loud “OW!” as she had bitten into something hard whilst chewing her cheese straw. She proceeded to spit out the mouthful of cheese straw she was chewing and looking at the mouthful on her plate to see if there was anything there. She gasped and said “Oh my god thats a stone” I said “don't be ridiculous theres no way” and then she picked it out of the chewed up mouthful of cheese straw and held out her hand and said “look A STONE” I couldn't believe my eyes , she was right it was a stone which she had bitten into whilst trying to enjoy her last cheese straw. Me and my sister, Jess, are appalled, horrified and disgusted that this has slipped past the quality checks. This stone could have seriously injured her teeth so thank god she realised and spat it out. This unfortunately puts an end to us purchasing baked goods at our local Cooplands. My sister is to quote her words “too traumatised to eat anything from Cooplands again”. I hope this gets picked up and reflected on and that it doesn’t happen to any other Cooplands customers. Many thanks.
