This small place remains my favourite Chinese restaurant in South London. It's simple yet authentic, and the food is delicious! It is also excellent value. The food is fresh and full of flavour, and portion sizes are good. Service is naturally friendly. This is not a place for posers. The venue, which is slowly being upgraded by the owners, is a little basic. However, if you want delicious well-cooked Cantonese and Vietnamese food, check it out!

I went for dinner yesterday with my partner and a couple of friends. We ordered three starters to share and four main dishes, one per person. Starters were just fine, nothing exceptional. The problem is that after the starters we had to wait nearly 50 minutes for the first main dish which was mine. Only my main, not all mains at once. My friends were staring at me while I was eating my crispy aromatic duck. Again, it was fine but not great. We nicely asked the waiter what was happening as I was served my food but my partner and friends were still waiting. The waiter didn't give us any reason, he just said: yes, yes, yes. 20 minutes after the waiter brought my main, he brought the second main, just when I had finished mine. We told the waiter we were leaving the restaurant. It didn't make any sense that he was bringing one main every 20 minutes after having waited 50 minutes since we finished our starters, that means that the last dish would have arrived nearly 2 hours after having the starters. We also realised there was another table with a couple of people having the same issue. She got her dish and they had to wait another 25 minutes for his dish. The man behind the bar apologised and said that they had been working from 6 (I guess he meant 6 am). I know that working in a restaurant is stressful and exahusting and I really understand that sometimes restaurants have bad days and not everything go as planned but I never had an experience like this in my whole life. We had never left a restaurant without having eaten. We would have appreciated any explanation from the waiter. The only food we managed to eat was just ok and the wait time was crazy. I DO NOT recommend this place.

Had the duck noodle soup. The broth was actually very nice, but they used the wrong noodles and the amount of duck was small...Sliced very thinly and a very small amount. We also had the crispy squid which was a huge disappointment. very chewy which as all know completely spoils the experience. My partner had the duck/roast pork noodles which she complained was the blandest oriental dish she had ever eaten... No taste whatsoever. I had been looking forward to eating here as l have been raised on Shoreditch Vietnamese and Chinatown and was promised that Van Hing could easily compare. Well l'm afraid that Van Hing was way off the mark and l for one will never be returning. Broth aside the food was disappointing

Being tempted before but put off by the tatty exterior. Anyway took the plunge. Unsure what to have (and probably should have tried the Pho) and liked the look of the Singapore fried rice on the next table. So it was hot and sour soup (okay bit glopy), Singapore fried rice (lots and okay), Szechuan chicken (good) and pak Choi which needed more garlic. Brisk service, busy and cafe style.

! The main courses, mostly chinese style, starts from £5 but the viet dishes are more ex. But since owners cum chefs are viet, better to order viet. Bahn cuon £6 ex but nice. Steamed rice rolls w whichever filling u choose - classic is pork, others incl prawn. Super thin, translucent and smooth, glistening w brushed oil and shallots. Light and nice, w the fish sauce and thinly cut lettuce salad side. Better than chinese cheung fun.Since i was still hungry, ordered lemongrass lamb £5.50. Portion not big, just enough for me after the bahn cuon. I like spring onion, onion, chilli and lemongrass so it worked well for me. I added some white pepper powder to give it more aroma esp when it was piping hot. Viet dishes are generally q light on the palate. I like. When we arrived on Saturday evening the place was pretty full and we got given a 20-min wait time - no problem as there's some nice pubs in the area! When we came back the place had calmed down to a busy 3/4 full.We ordered some starters whilst we decided what to have on the menu and waited. And waited. After 15 mins and being told they were about to be made we ordered our mains and waited some more. In total it took 30 mins since ordering to receive our starters. And another 10 for our first main to turn up - I think they forgot the second which came another 10 minutes later. Had our waitress explained how long the delay would be we wouldn't have minded but what we did mind was the table next to us.They arrived after we'd ordered our mains, got their menus, ordered and were served before our starters came out. They ordered extra food at the table which also arrived promptly and made me regret that we didn't know our waitress as well as they did - we didn't want to risk ordering more as we'd been there for over two hours by the time we'd finished. There's a difference between a little preferential treatment for friends (I've waitressed and we've all done it!) and taking the piss.I love the food here - especially the summer rolls! - it's all gorgeous and the staff are pretty decent. Seriously try thdir summer rolls! We've never had any issues here before with getting take-out or eating in but will give it a miss on weekends now.

In Canada we have a lot of restaurants that have similar taste to their food but this one really stood out. Their wonton soup is amazing. Just over £2 and worth every cent (or pence!) Also tried the meat spring rolls and chicken vermicelli. It's a very busy little restaurant but they do make a list and will even call to let you know your table is ready. We were in Vietnam for two weeks in Jan and if I'd eaten the food at Van Hing in Vietnam I wouldn't have been surprised. It is pretty decent and extremely good value. Van Hing is a small eaterie with around 40 seats at entrance level. It caters mainly for students from Camberwell art college , King's medical school and the local community. Prices are take away range from £4.50 to £6 so really budget. The food is very good but I especially recommend ordering vietnamese specialities (it's a local vietnamese place recommended by vietnamese !) - that tells you - no point going to Shoreditch - they won't beat the price -The decor is basic , service a bit hectic when busy - Only a couple of waiters. We went on a Friday night, Chinese New Year at around 7:15 pm and it was already busy with two large table booked 10 and 8 people . We were lucky to get the last table for 4. A few people decided to wait at the door - there are no chairs , just standing and wait but they had the next table available. We got there on time, ordered and were not disappointed - Best, the bill a la carte was cheaper than the set meal for 4 - Toilets are upstairs - can't comment on it , have not been. Chairs are a bit tight when the place is packed , so would have to get up to let someone else move about. The waiter would have to do some going round too ! OK so this place is CHEAP. Main courses are usually less than £5, so for a meat Pho you can expect to pay around £4.50ish. I was in the mood for Vietnamese and while I would usually go to Shoreditch I live in the area and wasn't really up for travelling so decided to give this place a go. The outside isn't the most inviting, it's looks like a greasy spoon cafe, but on a Saturday it was about half full so went ahead. The place was obviously a bit chaotic, only one of the waitresses seemed to be able to speak English (with a London accent so presume she is a Londoner) but the others were more- bring plates and take them away with no interaction with customers. This meant that even though the place wasn't that busy the one waitress who could speak English was under a lot of pressure. We ordered pretty basic stuff, half a hoi sin duck, a pho and a stir fry with some rice. The duck was ok, the mains were quite poor though. The broth for the pho had zero flavour (in fact I think it may have just been water) and the stir fry was burnt and tasty of sulpher. All around us there were problems, the table next to us ordered a second bottle of wine to be told they had run out and only had one other white available which when brought to the table was hot (not refrigerated). On the other side of us there was a very irate woman who was complaining that she had recieved her main a full 15 minutes before her companion. Awkwardly she started shouting about how we had got our food before them despite ordering after, and repeated involved us. Very unpleasant and I think she was right when she said that they had forgot the order, despite their claims that certain dishses just take longer (it was a pork stir fry?). Anyway, despite being very cheap there are basics in customer service here, at least a few more English speaking staff, plates being properly cleared before the second course, at least more than one bottle of chilled wine on a Friday night and either being clear to customers that food may arrival separately or at least admit a mistake!
