Food was disappointing, we like Japanese food but found this too salty. Tofu katsu was not breadcrumbs but marinated tofu with katsu sauce on top. Veg gyoza was best part of the meal.

Visited this restaurant 2 days in a row while staying at Tenby. Absolutely fabulous food and atmosphere. Heaps of vegan options and also gluten free vegan. I had the tofu vegetable Tepanyaki one night and Donburi the other. The miso was one of the best I've had full of tofu and veg. There is also a vegan udon, Katsu curry and Ramen. So many options. Even vegan dessert. Katsu Banana. This place is a must go in Tenby if you are vegan. It's also very authentic after recently traveling to Japan and trying vegan options there. My partner isn't vegetarian and enjoyed all of his dishes including the duck spring rolls for entre and the apple gyoza with passion fruit mochi. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Despite it being very quiet when we visited, this place was fantastic. I can easily imagine it being even more enjoyable when full, as with the charming decor it would really enhance the atmosphere. The food was excellent, and I was grateful they made an exception for me, allowing me to order Bao Buns from the takeaway menu as a lunch option while dining indoors. However, this does make me question why they have a separate takeaway menu in the first place. It seems a bit unnecessary. My partner struggled to find something to eat since Thai food isn’t really his preference, but he ended up enjoying what he ordered. This makes me think they could benefit from expanding the menu a little to cater to pickier eaters. I was also surprised that there wasn’t a dedicated lunch menu offering smaller main items, even though they were open for lunch. The service was wonderful. The young lady serving us was very welcoming and friendly. I would highly recommend this place, as I thoroughly enjoyed the food and the setting. I would love to return to try more from their menu.

First of all, the amount of vegan and vegetarian options this place has is just exquisite. No one in my family had any trouble finding something they wanted. The options are pretty good too, but I wish that they used ingredients that weren’t as western as they are. I had the teriyaki chicken rice bowl and the egg was fried very nicely, the rice was also really good, but the chicken was a little dry. It might have been better if it wasn’t shredded, or if they had cooked it in the sauce instead of adding it later. The staff were all very polite and nothing took very long to come. They also give you chocolate with the check which is fun. I didn’t love the dessert menu, but we tried some of them and they weren’t bad, just very sweet.

Really enjoyable evening with friends. Had selection of starters, they were very tasty and fresh. All 4 of us thought our mains were great. Shame can't give 4.5 stars. Only comment would be to provide side plates when sharing lots of starters and maybe some long cushions on wooden benches. Will be back again soon and would definitely recommend ☺️

We ordered octopus & squid for appetisers, donburi Korean beef, king prawn ramen & a child's crispy chicken with noodles. Total bill £69 including drinks, personally I think it was worth it & would glady visit again

Very expensive for the poor quality you get and the service was slow and awkward feeling, it took along time to get our orders in and when our food came it was very bland When entering the restaurant you'd expect it to be very authentic japanese food but when you finally eat the food it seems to be prepackaged and pre cooked which is a shame the octopus balls had 1 tiny piece of octopus inside and the rice tasted as though it was microwaved. All in all a disappointing experience considering the price tag.

Umi means sea/ocean but there wasn’t much seafood options of local ingredients other than deep fried dishes. Having lived in Japan before I wouldn’t call it Japanese cuisine more like an imitation of an imitation. The change of ownership mentioned by other reviewers probably was the reason for it. Judging from the dishes we had and their “flavours” it does not seem like the kitchen was run by Japanese staff or those with understanding of Japanese cooking. Service was nice enough but the food really made it too memorable for the wrong reasons.

We visited Umi on a busy Saturday evening (luckily we booked ahead otherwise they would have been no chance getting in!!), the staff despite being extremely busy took good care of us and checked up on us several times to ensure our food was okay! The atmosphere was wonderful, the decorations and the music really made it an enjoyable vibe. The menu has a lot of delicious options and we thoroughly enjoyed our food. We also stayed for dessert which was absolutely divine, definitely do not leave without ordering some! I would love to see the place again, I think it deserves a bigger venue honestly! Not because it was too cramped but because it was clearly so in demand and deserves more room to play with! The owners have created a wonderful experience and I'll be visiting again as soon as possible 🩷

The food was incredible at umi! The place has a fresh look but I still wasn’t expecting the food to be as good as it was and reasonably priced too, the fizzy fruit drinks were super refreshing. The service was a little slow between dessert and grabbing the bill but that was okay as we were on holiday at the time, the mains came out rapidly and we hadn’t yet completely finished our starters. Which again was okay as we were nearly finished anyway. The bathroom is the only thing letting it down, due to its layout and openness, no wheelchair access but that can’t be changed due to the design of the building. Staff were super friendly. Just wish we had one in Norwich! Tried ube ice cream and that was well worth the risk! Up there with one of my favourite restaurants, the food was 12/10

Honestly, this is the worst ramen I've ever had in my life. First about the taste, the soup as a whole is just salty, without any flavor, the meat and the runny egg are too salty. Noodles are the worst of all. It taste like supermarket instant noodles that are just dipped into a bowl . The service attitude is OK, but the overall layout of the table and chair of the restaurant is very tight, several people use a long table together, and there is nothing separated on the shared table. This means that people have to sit closely together with strangers while communicating at dinner, without any privacy.

I love this place! I was visiting Tenby for a week and this was my favorite restaurant by a long shot. I went with my parents and we each had something different and everything was absolutely delicious. I personally appreciated that each dish contained at least 2 servings of vegetables. I had the Chili Tofu Donburi which had a generous portion of tofu, perfect sticky rice and a mix of cooked and pickled veg and a fried egg. The others had Prawn Udon and Pulled Pork Ramen, both excellent as well. We also got a side of cucumber salad which was fresh and wonderful. I love when places have a limited menu, it’s usually a sign that they do the few items they serve very well and this was the case at Umi. I would definitely go back. The price point was a little high but it seems that way with all UK restaurants these days. At least here, I’m getting high quality for my money. The portions were huge and we went home with leftovers. I loved the decor and ambiance. The style was clean and simple with lovely details around the restaurant. Definitely worth coming here!

Style over substance - Avoid! If you want a dish that looks great for the gram and have no interest in an actual dining experience then this is the place for you. If you want to hear a doorbell go off every 2 minutes, have to move an entire dining table to get in and out of your seat, and are happy with someone plastered with pest control milling around the dining area, then Umi is the ideal dining experience. We had a chicken tapenyaki with overcooked chicken, raw cauliflower (maybe they thought they'd balance each other out?), and a complete lack of flavour, chicken donburi with no flavour whatsoever and next to no actual chicken, and two different orders of ramen with packet noodles, cheap ingredients and also no flavour! The pricing was also ludicrous, £4.50 for some pickles or £3 for a small juice. Also if you're not a fan of octopus I would reccommend the homeopathic octopus balls. It was nice for them to bring out us each half an after-dinner mint - no expense spared! I don't know if we could've finished a whole one so this was really appreciated. So good luck to them as a business, we won't be returning as we actually enjoy food but for those who just like the presentation and have more money than sense it's the perfect place.

Sad to say I was disappointed 😞 Me and my husband have always absolutely loved Umi and regularly travel from Swansea just to eat here. We've come for our anniversaries and birthdays and have always absolutely loved the vegan food. We travelled yesterday excited for the grand reopening but actually left quite sad. The chirpy well-educated 10* staff seem to have gone. Firstly our order was taken by a young girl who didn't seem to have any dish knowledge which left us having to guess which was frustrating and that really upbeat positive customer experience seems to have gone and has been replaced with quite a deflated service. Secondly, the food - the portion sizes seem to have reduced and I honestly felt robbed, my husband opted for the vegan katsu which we assumed would be a tofu or chicken alternative only to be given a tiny plate of katsu curry with 3 peices of potato as the "vegan option" for this price this was gut wrenching. The sesame broccoli to start was delicious but was half cold half warm so I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a hot or cold dish? The vegan tofu ramen was again nice tasting but there was barely anything in the Ramen for the price, lots of noodles and broth but not much else compared to what it used to be. We didn't have desert as what you get for the money just isn't worth it in my eyes so we asked for the bill only to be told at the end of the meal that they didn't take card payment so my husband had to then leave, go get cash out and then return. We didn't leave a tip as usual as the service just wasn't tip quality. The Asian man working seemed the be the only one really putting effort into the service but the other two servers gave quite a deflated almost impolite service. In summary, the food was nice but just not worth the price anymore and the portion sizes have shrunk. The upbeat positive amazing staff are no more and we unfortunately would not venture there again which is so sad as we used to love this place. Sorry Umi 😞

The food was not Asian, we ordered a soft shell crab donburi, teriyaki salmon and miso soup and gyoza. The donburi did not have any sauce to go with it, it is very plain and lacked a coherent direction. The soft shell crab was very small. I only ate 20% of the whole dish. The gyoza had little sauce, we struggled to dip it. The Miso and Teriyaki Salmon were also questionable, but not the main offenders . The being said, the music was good, the place was well furnished, and the food was quick (admittedly after waiting a while for someone to take our order). I wouldn’t recommend it to anybody who is expecting authentic Asian cuisine. It is a typical non-big city take on Asian food, and that also has it’s time and place.

Japanese-style restaurants are unusual and this one is very well done. They include chopsticks and the dishes feel very authentic- I had a pork ramen and it came in a wooden bowl with a wooden spoon and chopsticks (knife and fork were included too). The ramen flavour was delightful and I had a Taiyaki for dessert (a fish-shaped chocolate-filled pancake with ice cream). The Taiyaki was more or less the same taste as a Nutella pancake but in the shape of a fish. The portion sizes are also generous. Update: ate there again and had the fresh prawn katsu special (pictured). Again, the taste blew me away. The prawns melted in my mouth and the sides went with it perfectly- the only downside was the chillis were a bit too hot for my liking, so I left them. Had the apple gyoza for dessert and it was a bit like apple crumble slices wrapped in pastry with a caramel sauce.

Staff were lovely, but the ramen was very disappointing as they used medium egg noodles and definitely not ramen noodles. Ramen broth takes 24 hours to make and should be an explosion of flavour in your mouth and the highlight of this dish. This was unbelievably bland. The small plates we tried were delicious. Avoid the ramen, other dishes are very nice though. Asian alcohol selection was really good. Also, most notable, was the choice of vegetarian, gluten-free and vegan options available. Nice to see

We visited early evening on a Friday. Umi offers a variety of small plates and larger dishes so plenty to choose from for all appetites. We opted to share a gochujang chicken skewer and pork bao bun small plate specials before having a prawn ramen. Unfortunately the Pork Belly was off this evening subbed for Pulled Pork on the ramen. The small plates were delicious and full of flavour and both of us were impressed with the pork on bao buns, nice and crispy! The ramen seemed to let the rest of the meal down, I was expecting to have a punchier broth packed full of flavour as it was described as a miso ramen and instead of a traditional wheat noodle, Umi uses egg noodles which some may prefer. We were seated directly in front of the bar on a long table that could seat about 8 which felt a bit awkward because when the service was quieter the staff would congregate and we could hear their conversations and feel overlooked. I'd prefer to have more napkins in a dispenser on the table due to the nature of the food with ramen being a bit messy and not having to ask the staff for more but a plus that the napkins and chopsticks were recyclable. There was a great selection of Japanese and Asian drinks and I sampled the premium Japanese beer which was a pleasure to drink. The service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. The doorbell for the service call is a bit annoying as well. Total bill was £64 which was 2 small plates, 2 ramen and 1 beer and wine each.

Rare few asian food in Tenby to satisfy cravings but the ramen noodles tasted a little tough and plain. The curry rice was still alright but not as umami as usual asian flavours. Although portion was decent for the price for the mains, but the sides are very pricey for the portion (compared to asia prices). Location was great though (right in city centre) and service was friendly.

Immensely disappointing and the toilets were vile. The whole focus was on presentation of the food but there was absolutely no flavour I've had a better donburi dish from the supermarket. Staff were miserable and everything was chaos. This doorbell sound went off every other minute while we were there ruining the atmosphere then to top it off the toilets were disgusting. We were there as soon as they opened yet the toilets hadn't been cleaned at all. Marks all over the toilet bowl, no other toilet roll other than a damp roll on the bin and water all over the floor since their toilet leaks apparently 🤢. Found it very expensive, £6 for barely a portion of brocolli with sesame seeds thrown over it!overall thoroughly disappointed especially as the reviews were so positive don't be fooled! AVOID

A great place to visit in Tenby, the food was first class, the staff pleasant and efficient. The atmosphere was good. We didn’t sample the drinks so can’t comment on costs but the noodles and prawns were £17 a portion and a small portion of seasoned/savoury/chilli garlic skin on fries was £6. It’s a place you need to book, they prefer on line as they rarely answer the phone, the also require a £10 deposit per person on booking. Enjoy

Lovely food and incredible staff who were obviously under a lot of pressure during a busy time but still delivered fantastic service. Food on the pricey side but nice big portions and delicious. Would definitely recommend

Umi went above and beyond, earning my utmost admiration and a wish for a sixth star if it were possible! The service extended exceptional friendliness, accommodating my large party at short notice for a birthday celebration. Their efficiency, warm demeanor, and even the delightful surprise of a complimentary cocktail truly exceeded expectations. The presentation of dishes at Umi was a visual delight, artfully composed and generously portioned. The flavors showcased a dedication to quality ingredients and innovative recipes, setting them apart from typical Asian cuisine. The staff demonstrated commendable teamwork in effortlessly handling the bill-splitting process for our group of eighteen. Additionally, engaging in conversation with the owner added a personal touch, enhancing our dining experience. Umi proved to be the perfect venue for my birthday celebration, deserving of the recognition it has yet to fully receive. Without a doubt, it stands as the highlight of my culinary experiences thus far. When I return to Tenby I will certainly eat at Umi again!

Overall it's a nice place to eat, we both had Ramen for our mains which were slightly disappointing and lacked general flavour, I suspect this is because of the broth used as it was served with a miso broth and not a traditional ramen broth. On the other hand the gyoza's we had for starters was amazing and truly delicious, they also allowed us to mix and match veggie and chicken gyoza's which is great for flexible couples like us. (1 meat eater & 1 veggie)

I ordered tofu teriyaki. The rice and vegetables were delicious. The tofu was hard as a rock. I was given another plate of lightly cooked tofu but it was exactly the same.

Umi has always been a favourite of ours since it opened. Food and staff were great! There seems to have been a change in staff and now there are 3 young girls who are unwelcoming, arrogant and make you feel awkward - please bring back the lady with glasses and the man with dark brown hair - those original staff members have more charisma, friendliness and hospitality than these 3 new young staff members combined. When we first walked in to turn up for our booked table - the 3 of them all stood arms crossed from behind the bar, looked at each other and then at us, didn't greet us, I had to wave at them while they stared gormlessly in our direction?.. Very weird, awkward atmosphere, the restaurant only had two other small tables occupied. They brought out one main meal, then one starter, then childrens meal, starter, then more mains followed by starters and childs meal... right old mess. The table was rammed with all the food we ordered in one go, rather than the obvious order of: starters, clear table, then mains.....? Baffling. This didn't used to happen with the older staff members. I USED to love this restaurant, I hate to criticise it. However these 3 new members of staff are rude and just stand uselessly behind the bar glaring at customers?! .. I'd rather let the owners know, than see the place go down hill. Recruit better! Edit: Interesting response from the owner. I'm guessing the young staff are family members then. Also, interesting to read the other latest reviews who seem to be of the same opinion.

Staff were nice, but we were shoved in a corner next to the bar, so I was sat facing a wall with my back to the restaurant, and the place was basically empty, maybe 2 other customers. Not very authentic. We ordered several different starters which were very nice, especially the ribs. But £9 for a few ribs with minimal meat is a bit much. The mains were a bit disappointing. I ordered pork belly ramen, but it wasn't ramen noodles, it was egg noodles. And it wasnt pork belly, It was slices of pork. Plus basic miso broth. I know this may sound petty, but things like this bug me as it isn't what it says on the menu and anyone who isn't familiar with Asian food wouldn't notice. I can't even remember what my parter ordered, which kind of says it all. I recommend ordering lots of starters and skipping the mains. This place would be better as a tapas restaurant. *Edited due to restaurant response below. No customer should have to ask not to stare at a wall. The noodles were NOT ramen. Yes, the menu did state it was a Miso broth, but it was still basic.

We went for Sunday lunch and had the sharing platter , absolutely amazing 3 large portion of meat proper pigs in blankets and meat stuffing. So much veg we loved the swede mash and the cauliflower cheese. Fantastic selection of veg beautifully cooked The portion was so big we brought it home and had it again the next day. Looking forward to trying something else on menu when next in area.

We escaped a downpour here, we weren't planning on lunch, but ordered a sausage sandwich to share and it was great. The place was packed and very busy, but we'll run. The buildings are interesting, a maze of properties joined together, with the brewery downstairs. There's also a shop and coffee shop part of Harbwr. There are many places to eat and drink in Tenby and this one should not be missed
