Great food for pretty decent prices. We visited it twice on two consecutive nights during our recent visit to Betwys-y-coed. Definitely a great place for a lovely meal. Happy to recommend this. We came via a recommendation too from my OH's parents.

We decided to try this place for a Sunday lunch as we were staying locally. We booked a table for 2 around 20 minutes beforehand. The parking is very limited - we were lucky to get a space but there were cars everywhere when we left. I'm not sure where you would park if the carpark and road is full. The interior appeared very cosy and the staff were very welcoming. Unfortunately we were seated in a different room to the one you initially walk into (further to the back of the building). This room was extremely full, containing 2 small tables and a large table. I was basically sat on the lap of another customer... Then there was the smell. There was a very strong odour of toilet cleaner and that was really off putting, especially whilst eating food. It really ruined our experience. A waitress took our drinks and food order very quickly but around 20 minutes later our food arrived and we still hadn't received our drinks. We queried this when our food arrived and the waitress apologised before bringing them to us. Again, this ruined our experience slightly. However, the food was fantastic and that is the reason for 4 stars. One of the best roast dinners we have ever had. A few things that could be improved to improve customer experience but the food is spot on.

This was a rather disappointing experience. We chose Ty Gwyn because of the good reviews, short walk and characterful appearance. Points two and three were fine but otherwise we were less happy. The interior is cosy and very olde worldy and we got plenty of chance to observe it as we had a fifty minutes wait between sitting down and finding food in front of us. If your kitchen is under pressure offering a less ludicrously extensive menu is probably sensible! When the food arrived it was underwhelming. My lamb wellington was quite tasty but the pastry was more soggy than flaky. My partner's fish dish was a beige mess, its components hard to recognise. The accompanying dish of veg was fine and generous but the whole experience left us unlikely to return.

My husband and I stopped here on our way home from Snowdonia National Park after finding Betws Y Coed over flowing with full car parks and people. Just outside the village over the bridge many cars just fly past, but it caught our eye! On entering we were greeted by a friendly young man who said that the coffee we were after was not a problem at all. After taking a seat in the bar area, he brought over to us a latte and a cappuccino. We asked if we could order two desserts from the menu , again it was no problem at all. A very polite staff member who seemed to be the only person on duty! We order a homemade warm chocolate fudge cake and a homemade chocolate and honeycomb cheesecake. Both were beautifully presented and tasted delicious! My cappuccino was greater was extremely frothy! Our bill totalled less than £20! We had a little look around the restaurant which looked amazing set up for evening dinner! We took a business card as we would without doubt stay here! Thank you!

Visited Wales for first time. We stayed at this hotel and we were blown away with the whole visit..The day before we were expected at the hotel we received a telephone call from a member of staff asking if we wanted a table booked for dinner. It was advisable to book as they are extremely busy. This was much appreciated and we saw for ourselves just how busy they are. From arriving at this amazing hotel, to leaving, we thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our stay. All the staff were so nice and made us feel welcome. The building is an old coach house with lots of original features, it is truly amazing. The fresh locally sourced food ,cooked to order has to be the best we have ever had. I would certainly recommend this amazing hotel and we will certainly visit again in the future.

Had read excellent reviews of the hotel and food. However we must have arrived on a bad day. On arrival a pleasant welcome. Apart from that it appeared that the staff were not interested in making us feel welcome. Maybe the hotel can rely on passing trade being in one on the tourist hot spot towns near to Snowdonia. Never the less recommendations are all important in this day to sustain a business throughout the year.Room was adequate but nothing special. We had reserved a table for dinner which is advisable during the busy season. We came down for dinner and were shown through to the restaurant which was busy. Food was well cooked but no interaction from the waitress. Our order was taken, food placed in front of us and collected and that was it. Breakfast was similar. On departure we went to reception where there were two gentlemen talking. Left our key on the desk and said goodbye but no response from the two of them. They were more interested in something on the mobile phone. Not a great experience which is a shame. We were both looking forward to this stay.

We stayed for two nights with friends on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis. Our room was small with a separate private bathroom which was fine for us and the bed was extremely comfortable. The whole place was spotlessly clean and well cared for. The hotel is obviously very old and has lots of character, although parking is restricted. It is on the main road, but we were not affected by traffic noise. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the food was of particularly high quality. We would certainly stay there again and recommend it unreservedly.

Ate here 24 Nov and it was a lovely experience. The staff were very polite and attentive, we sat by the wood burner in the bar area, very nice on a cold evening. Ordered pate as a starter, which i shared with my wife as it was a generous portion. Delicious. I had the bacon chops (which you get 2) and the good lady had the rump steak pie. Both were very good, would recommend without hesitation. The in law had the posh fish and chips which she said was excellent. Best of all, the price. Ty Gwyn have an extensive menu, you would be hard pressed not to find something that appeals. Then check out their prices, brilliant value for money. With prices rising everywhere it is very easy to pay a lot more for a lot less. If your thinking of visiting Ty Gwyn, go, go, go. You,ll be glad you did.

Had a meal here tonight after a 6 hour drive back to home. Looked online at the menu, saw swordfish and thought why not go as swordfish is a dish I like. When I’m the restaurant and saw the dish not on the menu, I asked the waiter and was informed that swordfish was not on the menu and the online one was a sample menu! Sadly no note online stating this. Ordered the lamb rack which was small. When asked at the end of the meal how it was, I said it was like a starter and not a main for the size of the lamb. With this a young man came across and slapped the bill on the table we was instructed to pay at the desk at the front of this establishment. When asked how it was and my reply was the same small size I was challenged my who I believe the owner and told not to make it into an argument! Well I wish I read reviews before coming here. Because they are right about the staff, the food was at a standard excepted for a mid range restaurant but the customer service needs improvement. I look forward to a reply as criticisms is not a word this place likes by the other comments reply’s!

We arrived 15 minutes early for our table and the welcome was muted. Bar service was fine. We had received a voicemail earlier in the day that they couldn't accept card payments that day as machine was down - only cash or BACS. The menu is far too large for the food to be cooked from fresh. I had the 'posh' fish & chips where fish in batter had obviously been re-cooked from frozen. The batter was soggy, fish which was supposed to be sea bream, hmm. I'd had a fish & chips at The Oystercatcher in Anglesey a couple of nights before and the difference is like comparing Spam with Sirloin Steak. Table service Ok. Wouldn't go back

I had cod gratin with welsh cheese and it was a taste sensation. We both had slow cooked steak & kidney pie with chipd. I am a pie lover and can say it was one of the most flavorsome and tender steak pies I have ever tasted. We both went for pudding....we couldn't resist. Baileys creme brulee and a fresh apple, ginger and summer fruits crumble with custard.

Felt the need to write this review to counter all the overwhelmingly positive reviews on this site. I was very excited to try this place based off the reviews however I was sorely disappointed The first sign of trouble was the size of the menu it’s HUGE which is for me a bad sign no kitchen can cook that amount dishes to a high standard. A lot of the dishes did sound very nice however the reality did not live up to this. The first starter Cajun spiced Camembert was bang average no taste of Cajun seasoning, no acid or sweetness to counter the cheese just some raw beetroot. The second starter mushroom tart which again was bang average the mushrooms were supposed to be pickled didn’t taste that at all and the sauce it came in was wishy washy surely it’s not supposed to be that runny? Then the mains, I had lamb shoulder Shepard’s pie with Parmesan and rosemary mash and balsamic cabbage which again sounds amazing but very disappointing. No seasoning, no taste of rosemary or Parmesan , tasteless gravy, no flavour of balsamic , hardly any lamb and just really really bland I’ve had nicer ready meals. The other main was actually ok to be fair the pork belly was really nice the crackling was perfect however the mash it came with was bland and lacked seasoning. The menu sounds amazing but the majority of the flavours and ingredients listed in the description are not present. Don’t get me wrong the food is alright I ate it all but given the level of reviews on this site I was expecting much much better

He was not on shift but was happy to accommodate us and check us in as he was in the reception on arrival. We stayed in room 3 which has a solid four poster bed, spa bath and a short walk down the stairs from the bar. Very unique and subtle old-style decor! We wanted to see the other rooms as he said they were all different but they were all occupied the nights we stayed so we couldn't look at them unfortunately! The food was amazing, lamb and steak cooked to perfection and the seafood options were incredible! To start with there was no welcome and and no-one asked our name or booking time. We had booked a table for 8pm in dining room and arrived at 7pm for pre-dinner drinks. We were shown to a pub table and ordered beer which was off. The barman said he didn't drink beer so he wouldn't know it was off (!!) but he replaced it anyway. At 10 past 7 the waiter asked for the food order. I said we had booked for 8pm and the barman rudely proceeded to give us a lecture on how we couldn't eat in the dining room at 8 since they were even full a week ago when we had booked! Someone then shouted from another room that we could indeed have a table. Confusion amongst the staff was evident all evening. The dining room was cold and smelled of damp. They brought the starter before asking for the wine order. When we finally got the wine it was fine but then another waiter turned up with another 2 glasses of wine by mistake. The food order was taken by a man in a scruffy pair of jeans and served us raw swordfish which was fine once it was sent back and cooked.. The mash potato was lumpy and the salad smothered in an unwanted dressing. The pub itself is a very old and beautiful, coaching inn but it is run like Fawlty Towers, lacking in coordination and charm. Needs Gordon Ramsay to sort it out.

My partner had the lobster/prawn/st jacque which was like a miniature fish pie with cheesy mash. Really creamy and fresh seafood. The whole partridge main was a show stopper, really tasty and well presented. The seabass with prawns and crab bisque was lovely, really decadent tasting sauce. The only downfall here is that you're given the option of chips, salad or veg but it's not clear from the menu that the mains do already come with some form of potato. I.e. the partridge came with mash and the seabass came with sliced potatoes but we both ordered chips additionally not knowing! It would have been better if the server mentioned this when taking our order. We will definitely be back next time we're in the area!

This is the second time we have eaten in this restaurant and once again the food was very good with lots of choice on the menu. My one criticism is that you are offered a choice of chips or veg or salad (one only). What they don't tell you is that all the meals are served on a bed of some kind of potato (mash or saute). So the three of us ended up with chips and mashed potato! I would most definitely have ordered vegetables rather than chips had I known this. Oh and the seats are a bit hard! But the decor is lovely and staff friendly and provide good service.

We ate here after looking for one of the 'higher rated' restaurants in the area. And we were not disappointed. To start I had the venison loin with a herb honey. This was amazing, the venison was cooked to perfection, it was soft and flavourful. My girlfriend had the prawn and crayfish with avocado, she said dish tasted in season which was matched surprisingly well with the avocado. For main I had the pan cooked grouse, stuffing and mash. This was beautiful and full of flavour. Ellen had the fish pie, which was fresh and well filled. We shared a bowl of seasonal vegetables all were cooked well. Dessert, we shared a ginger bread cake which came out looking like it was from a Michelin star resteraunt, and tasted as such. Our only comment would be that the staff seemed a little un-coordinated. However for us as they were really polite and lovely to talk to. Although they were very busy they still took time to have a chat. They also tried very hard to take walk-ins despite having bookings and tried to accommodate as much as possible, (us having booked only hours before)this pulled it to an excellent score for us.

The room was gorgeous, the bed amazingly comfortable, the spa tub was great until we had a knock on the door to say it was leaking into the kitchen (some minor repairs required to affix the panel to the bath as it was loose when we arrived). We only ate here one night (on our anniversary) as they were fully booked the rest of our stay, the food was absolutely astounding. I had the squid to start and 1/2 lobster Thermidor as a main and my husband had the salmon for main and honeycomb cheesecake for dessert. It was all delicious. I would highly recommend booking a table in advance. The breakfast was delicious and plenty of options. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. The only real downsides for us was the parking and the WiFi in the room was quite poor. We were in a converted campervan as we were continuing our week camping, and there are only a few parking spaces at the side of which we couldn’t really get the van in, so it had to be parked out the front on the main road. On the plus side of this, they very kindly let us store our mountain bikes in the laundry room so they weren’t on display on the back on the van.On the whole, a fantastic place, would definitely come here again, even if it’s just for an evening meal.

Good points - Food is of a reasonable standard (4/5 stars) - The staff are generally pretty friendly - They cater to children and have a children’s menuBad points - The building itself must be a couple of hundred years old and smells of damp. I appreciate there is probably little the owners can do about this but it’s worth mentioning. It probably doesn’t detract too much from the overall experience though. - When we walked in we overheard what turned out to be the owners son, swearing in the kitchen as he was talking to the chefs. He wasn’t shouting at them, just engaging in normal conversation but we heard plenty of expletives inc F-this and F-that. Not ideal as we had kids with us. - The decor and tables/chairs needs updating a bit and I don’t think anyone has dusted or hoovered for many years.

Stumbled across this gem by accident after struggling to find anywhere to eat in Llandudno. On the way back to Ruthin we found this and were so glad we did! Great service, took our temp and asked questions about our health which was thorough. They had an extensive menu , which in today's climate was a pleasant change. The food was excetional and service matched.

A mixed evening. Disappointed they weren’t doing the ‘eat out to help out’ scheme - apparently they didn’t know how to do it. Pretty easy if they just googled it. So the meal was expensive - when we could have done with a discounted meal when we’re all pushed for cash these days. Card machine not working - so had to get cash. Meal was wrong so I ate at a different time to my husband (although they were super apologetic and mistakes happen). Meal was very nice, service was patchy. Eg my meal was all wrong, but the table next to us got complimentary Prosecco as lots of things on the menu weren’t available. All in all a bit of an expensive mistake. Lots of other places to eat at.

Advisable to book, very popular and rightly so. Antique rooms with carefully chosen colours, furniture. Extensive menu with beautifully designed meals, especially lots of fish, seafood choices. Food piping hot and so tasty. Had starters and main meals - gutted to be too full for dessert, generous portions of salad and vegetables. Service great and this was the first day open under new Covid regulations. Great spacing between tables, felt very at ease eating. Can’t recommend it highly enough. Great value too

Firstly let me say that the food was excellent and I have no complaint whatsoever about the kitchen staff. Also the menu had lots of really good choices and under normal circumstances I would be looking forward to visiting again.Unfortunately the customer service left a lot to be desired. The bottled lager was served at room temperature, and the room was warm. The bottles were left on the table with no attempt to pour them, although judging from the response to my complaint we were lucky to get glasses as the manager said some people drink from the bottle. Also, the empties were left throughout the meal. Before ordering the food we asked about some of the ingredients and were given totally wrong information. Our enquiry was based on food dislikes but had it been based on food allergies it could have caused a real problem. At the end of the evening there was no staff behind the bar and several customers had trouble summoning someone to pay. According to the manager the waiter is hard of hearing and doesn't always hear the bell. In that case maybe it would be a good idea to change the system of calling him with a bell.I emailed the manager the following day outlining our experience and received a very dismissive reply which was clearly "sorry (not sorry)".I had been looking forward for some time to try this restaurant but I will not be returning despite the excellent menu.

We booked to stay at the Ty Gwyn as part of a nostalgia trip to the area. In previous years they used to take a dog in the bedrooms and so we assumed (without checking) that a dog would be ok. After booking but before the stay date, I did call to check to see if they would take our dog, and since they have made a recent refurbishment they will no longer accept pets. All fair, I guess. However, the reservation we made was full payment and full fee if cancelled. So we have a reservation we have paid for, but cannot now take it up because they will not take a dog. I have spoken to them and asked Booking.com to speak to them, but they will not refund any part of the full fee. It is true we could still take up the night, but we cannot take our dog... so face a choice of leaving the dog in a kennel for 3 nights or taking her to somewhere else on our walking trip. Not a good choice and more cost either way. In these circumstances we feel their response to be money-grabbing and not the service or care we used to get there. I have known about and visited the Ty Gwyn hotel and restaurant since 1990 and always had a great time. The person I spoke to on this occasion was monosyllabic and offhand, the hotel promised to consider it and get back to me but did not - in the end it was Booking.com who got back to me with the negative response. So they changed their policy but refused to give their historical customers the benefit of this doubt. Very poor show all around - enjoy the £110, Ty Gwyn! You won't get any more from us - ever! Shame.

Apart from the chips (Chinese ?!) this was the worst Chinese meal I have ever had. The staff were nice but couldn’t get everything out at the same time. Did the chef take on more than they could manage? The reviews for this place are pretty good but this was our first visit and we’re unlikely to return based on this experience. Did they taste anything they cooked? To be fair the spring rolls at the start were ok but the courses got worse and worse. Why was there (stale) Bombay mix on the table? So disappointed I couldn’t be bothered to complain.

We have stayed here three times prior to the latest visit, the last being about twelve years ago. We booked our stay based on previous experiences plus looking at the menu online. We knew that parking was at a premium here with a small car park large enough for six cars. There is enough room to park two cars safely outside next to the main road which is what we did. We had also made a booking for dinner. We sat in the bar area 5 minutes before our dinner booking. We found a menu ourselves but it was over half an hour before we were able to place an order. The waiter had not apparently been told that we were waiting and the young lady behind the bar apologised for this. The menu we received bore little resemblance to the one online. It was enormous. Mussels as a starter were ok. Lamb wellington was well overcooked. A spicy beef dish likewise. Bread and butter pudding had to be cut with a knife due to crusts not being removed. The lady with short greying hair was most polite and attentive whilst the waiter seemed somewhat confused. This establishment has several dining rooms full of antique furniture plus china, paintings and ornaments. This coupled with a real fire creates a very pleasant homely atmosphere. But the sight of several loose and unprotected electric cables gave cause for concern. Our bed was comfortable and the room seemed reasonably clean. However the floor coverings were past their best. We would have liked to have given Ty Gwyn a better review but feel unable to do so. We are experienced travellers and have stayed in countless hotels in the U.K. and in over 50 countries. We have also eaten in thousands of restaurants in 40+ years of travel.

Nice enough gastro food cooked fairly well. Niceley decorated new roomGood bathroom and shower. Bad points. Unatentive and uninterested staff, more concerned about going home early than taking care of the customer.Staff not familiar with menu and dishes.Last orders at 10.15pm on a Friday evening?Felt like we were rushed so staff could get to the pub themselves!!Breakfast only served between 8.15am-9.30am on a weekend? Went there based on other reviews. When I called to enquire about what time they started serving they asked whether I wanted to book a table so I gathered from that I probably needed to book a table. I did. Evening meal starts at 6 pm and I booked in for then and it quickly filled up. The menu is pretty extensive which surprised me and I chose chicken liver pâté which was much more dense than I’ve ever had before but very tasty, served with a lot of toast, a side salad and an onion relish which was nice but could’ve had a bit more flavour to it. The starter alone probably would have been sufficient. I also ordered the shepherds pie which I don’t normally have as I’m not a massive fan of lamb mince. However, this was pieces of lamb and was absolutely delicious and tender. The mash on top was creamy and it was served with braised red cabbage which was also delicious. There was an option for chips or vegetables and I went for the home-made chips. All in all a great success and extremely reasonable price. Guests next to me said their leek and pot soup, fish pie, bass were all delicious

I visited this restaurant with a group of friends on a Friday night. Our table was booked for 6:30 and we arrived about 6:20. First impressions were good and the building is very old and full of character. The menu is a very confusing affair. There are about 15+ starters and even more main courses to choose from. It consists of a strange combination of Thai dishes, curry, fish and various traditional/ bistro dishes. Several of my friends were vegetarians and there was very little on the menu for them to choose from and none of the dishes were marked as suitable for vegetarians. We asked the waiter about this but he seemed fairly clueless and the only thing he could suggest was Goats Cheese. Anyway we all placed our orders and waited and waited. At 7:30 the food started to arrived

I booked this restaurant weeks in advance as it was our first anniversary and wanted a nice meal. We got a taxi there and arrived 10 minutes early and asked if we could have a drink at the bar. We ordered drinks and were told the table was ready. It took 20 minutes for 2 Gin and Tonics to arrive. We then sat for a further 20 minutes and and started to realise something was not right. We hadn’t been given a menu and nobody had acknowledged us at all. My wife went to the bar and politely said we were going to leave because of the lack of service and could we pay for the drinks. She informed them it was our anniversary and we were very disappointed. Unbelievably, they took the money for the drinks and didn’t seem to care.

Another visit to this lovely site and this brilliant restaurant. The food is always gorgeous and tasty. The staff are really friendly and always make you feel so welcome. We had two evening meals there and a Sunday Roast which was simply the best we have ever tasted. So you can imagine our shock and horror when we were told that the bar and restaurant is to knocked down to accomodate two more mobile homes. This is an absolute travesty and will be a huge loss to the site. In fact a site with zero facilities will not be top of my list in the future.
