I had an incredible dining experience at this Italian restaurant. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, with attentive staff who made us feel right at home. But the real star of the show was the pasta, hands down some of the best I’ve ever had. Perfectly cooked al dente, with rich, flavorful sauces that clearly used high-quality ingredients. The ragu pasta was absolutely unforgettable, and the white asparagus pasta was packed with freshness. Every bite was a reminder of how satisfying great pasta can be. I’ll definitely be coming back and recommending it to all my friends.

People love to say “oh Trullo is aaaaamazing / I’ve heard it’s sooooo good” and there are countless 5-star reviews online, so of course I was so excited to finally dine at Trullo! I’m not one to write reviews (literally, ever) nor one to moan about poor dining experiences - I’ve worked in hospitality before, so tend to give people the benefit of the doubt and am generally pretty chill and easy to please! My experience at Trullo wasn’t “shocking” or “terrible” or anything particularly dramatically BAD, but it was significantly below average and, among all the 5-star reviews of people who had a wonderful experience, I thought I’d share a different perspective from someone who didn’t. We were seated downstairs in the “cave-like” area towards the back of the basement. Initial impressions were “wow this is so cool and intimate and chic” but a couple minutes later we realised (a) it was totally impractical to get in and out, it was super cramped, and you really had to be careful not to hit your head (speaking from experience of someone who totally whacked her head oops); (b) it was dark (we had to use the flashlights on our phones to read the menus like giant losers because the single flickering candle was not helping) (my eyesight isn’t bad btw); and (c) it was pretty impossible to get the attention of the serving staff (more on this below). We spent 10 minutes looking at the menu until a waitress came over and asked for our drinks order - we realised we weren’t given drinks menus and so had to wait another 10 minutes for that to be dropped off. No probs, all good, stuff happens. Once received, we then waited AGES for our drinks order to be taken. All efforts of “pls come over here” eye contact were completely futile - no one was paying any attention to us. After being seated for maybe 45 minutes (that's a guess, but it sounds about right) and being completely ignored, we hadn’t even ordered drinks…! Someone finally came (after we literally stood up and waved down the serving staff like absolute loons) and then we ordered drinks, starters and food all in one go (we were starving). Drinks then came, all good. Then pasta came… hmmm but what about our starter? We didn't mention it and instead scarfed down our pasta (pursuant to starving) and then ordered dessert (again, with difficulty, pursuant to being ignored). None of the staff checked in on us throughout the meal, asked if the food was ok, asked if we wanted another drink etc. Plus, the starter was added to the bill at the end (which we asked to be removed given we never received it) - not a good look, Trullo. We ordered the beef shin ragu pappardelle and the tagliarini with mussels, along with tiramisu and the vanilla pannacotta for dessert. The food was good - it wasn’t “aaaaamazing” nor was it the best Italian I’ve had in London. The price is high, portions are small and the service/experience was disappointing - while I don’t want that to taint my opinion of the food (and I’m trying not to do that - as I said, the food was good), I wasn't blown away and don’t find myself wanting to come back for it. All in all - won’t be back and won’t be contributing to the “oh Trullo is aaaaamazing” chorus. 2 stars is fair I think.

*** updated to say, at my husband’s insistence, we returned for a second time (wisely, without or kids this time) and it did not disappoint. Had a drink next door first (great). Food was still excellent - decent, unpretentious but still very well done. Very friendly service. Thanks guys. Honestly, exactly how restaurants should be. Small menu of things done really well. Plenty of staff who were very friendly & polite. Restaurant buzzing. Obviously the pasta is amazing but I’d happily snack on the sourdough and salami every day (with a lemon tart on the side).

Unbelievable meal! Came for a girls night, it was amazing. On a Sunday evening, what a popular spot. People kept coming in. We got loads of stuff, my favorite was the almond sauce with the asparagus. Specifically the sauce was delicious. I also loved the pappardelle! The wine was also equally amazing. We really loved it all. I wish they gave some sort of bread for free. This surely would be very beneficial, as the sauces are so delicious from many plates. I usually like to clean the plates up with bread, but we didn’t want to order more sour dough. It would elevate this place. Please add some sort of free bread or cheaper bread option ! Otherwise, a lovely spot! One other thing to note, the bathroom stalls close in the middle- it’s odd because you can definitely see out while using the bathroom and vice versa. A cool design but practicality could be improved

TLDR: bit of emperor's new clothes here in my view. My second time at Trullo recently after our first visit very shortly after the first lockdown was really disappointing. I put the first visit down to COVID and went back again before going to a gig in Union chapel but unfortunately my experience was the same. Staff were nice, if a bit slow. Drinks were good. Food was also slow. To be fair we hadn't pointed out that we were going to the gig, but still had given ourselves 1.5 hours for dinner which should have been plenty. We had to pay the bill in a bit of a rush and left without dessert as the mains had taken so long. My main issue is just how underwhelming the food is. I'd had a nettle pasta at Padella a few years ago that blew me away so I was delighted to see a nettle pasta on the menu again, but it just tasted of spinach and nothing else. For twenty quid or so to get some spaghetti in a spinach sauce with literally nothing else (I asked and waited 10 minutes for some parmesan) it is just not justified for the price. Companions really enjoyed the ragu, which at least had some meat to add to the pasta and sauce and by all accounts was delicious. But for me there's nothing here to justify a much higher price than the more traditional trattorias run by Italians within striking distance - where you'll get more variety, bigger portions, quicker service, and lower prices.

This restaurant has a lovely ambience with a stripped back interior looking into the busy road just off Highbury Corner. The staff are very friendly And there’s a skilled hand in the kitchen turning out some super food. We shared a guinea fowl ravioli with a delicious sage sauce and followed with well executed whole John Dory (probably my favourite fish) which had been chargrilled expertly and adorned with a lemon yellow bottarga and rabbit leg. This is expert Italian cookery and I’m tempted to buy their cook book. Unsurprisingly the ground floor was full for Sunday lunch so I’d say booking essential.

I had a lovely dinner here this evening. It was a girls only family friend style reunion, and it was perfect. The food arrived at just the right pace - not too fast, not too slow - and the menu offered a fantastic selection of unique starters, mains, and desserts. The cocktails were beautifully presented, and the wine was lovely and chilled. Prices were reasonable and aligned with what you’d typically expect when dining out - plus, it’s really about the overall experience. All the pasta dishes are under £20, and starters begin at just £5. But our favourite thing about the restaurant would probably have to be the atmosphere. The music selection was top-tier, and the interior had a cozy, inviting vibe with perfect lighting. The decor was gorgeous, and the bar next door is also worth checking out. It’s a great idea to have a separate bar attached to the restaurant - it’s a bit more private and quieter if needed. Overall, we had a lovely evening and ended up staying for over two hours - right until closing! That’s how nice it was… Lastly, a special shoutout to one of our waitresses, Connie. She was especially helpful and attentive - patiently answering all our questions and walking us through the menu in detail. She checked on us regularly and even took the time to chat with us a little, despite how busy it can get on weekend nights. Anyway, we would absolutely recommend this place to anyone! All the very best to Trullo💗

Service: Service was excellent — staff were very attentive and made sure we were well looked after throughout the meal. Food: The ingredients were incredibly fresh, and we ended up eating everything — even scarpetta’ing the plates clean. I was initially unsure about the tomato pasta, but it completely won me over — it might have even been better than the pappardelle! The standout dish was the cuttlefish appetizer — absolutely exceptional and not to be missed. Ambience: The layout is a bit quirky, with lots of little steps here and there, but the mood lighting and thoughtful decor create a romantic and cool atmosphere. There’s both an upstairs and downstas.

We had our wedding breakfast at Trullo and absolutely loved it. Trullo was very helpful in the weeks leading up to the event - we were able to arrange a seating plan that would work well for the speeches, they allowed us a few substitutes to our chosen menu (cacio e pepe was a must!) and we were able to pre-select wines and prosecco for our guests. The end-result - a prosecco reception followed by a 30-person seated meal in Trullo's intimate downstairs space - was absolutely perfect. Trullo's recommended "U" shape for the tables also worked very well for the wedding speeches. Our florist was allowed to come in early to decorate the space and we were so happy with the result - the flowers and candles did need to be removed following our event but Trullo let us know well ahead of time and some friends graciously helped bring these to our evening celebration at a different venue. Trullo is our favourite restaurant in London and we were so happy to celebrate here - we would highly recommend their downstairs space for a private booking or wedding breakfast. On our wedding day we even ran into a couple that was celebrating their one-year anniversary with a lunch date at Trullo, the site of their wedding breakfast as well!

My neighbourhood Italian is a great spot. It's quite pricey so don't go regularly but perfect for a treat such as a birthday or when you want somewhere special. Food is great and they change the menu often, but think the relaxed atmosphere with the dimmed lighting and the service make it stand out. Beef ragu is their classic dish so tender. Last time I went I told the waitress it was for a belated birthday and she brought out a candle on the doughnuts which was very thoughtful. Overall highly recommend and booking essential (over a week ahead most times!).

From start to finish, Trullo was simply exceptional and we can’t wait to return. Food: We started with the sourdough and the mozzarella. And shared three pastas – pappardelle with beef shin ragu, ravioli with ricotta and a walnut sauce, and the fettuccine with veal, with the veal being the star of all three. Dessert was the doughnuts with apricots. Service: It was impressive how the staff were in sync on all that we ordered. We were able to have one seamless conversation about the food and drinks with three different staff members. Food came out in good time, and staff checked in throughout. Overall: No loud and overbearing dance music (thank you!) which made for a wonderful grown up dinner with conversation. We did have to clear our table for the next reservation, but we did get fair warning ahead of time. A must if you’re in London and want Italian.

I went here for my birthday and it was such a let down. The prices are ridiculous for the quality of the food. Pretentious names won't make the dish taste any better and charging £26 for a "mauve" aubergine and a spoonful of chickpeas is outrageous when the taste is unforgettable. With so many better options in Highbury and Angel, save your money and get something just as good, if not much better, for half the price. Really disappointed to have had this experience on my birthday.

Trullo is easily one of North London’s best Italian restaurants, striking the perfect balance between comforting classics and inventive seasonal dishes. The menu changes regularly, keeping things fresh and exciting, but the staples—like their legendary beef shin pappardelle—remain a constant highlight. No matter when you visit, you’re guaranteed something delicious. On my most recent trip, I had the blood orange and quail fritti, and wow—it was a standout dish. The contrast of crispy, golden-battered quail with the citrusy brightness of blood orange was simply unforgettable. Every plate here is crafted with care, showcasing high-quality ingredients and a clear passion for Italian cooking. A word of advice: make sure to book. Trullo is a popular spot, regularly frequented by locals, and walk-ins can be tough to secure. If you arrive early, though, there’s a great little aperitif bar next door, perfect for a pre-dinner Negroni or a glass of wine while you wait. What sets Trullo apart is its consistency—whether you’re indulging in their signature pasta, exploring the ever-evolving seasonal dishes, or just soaking in the warm, neighborhood-friendly atmosphere, it always delivers. It’s the kind of place that feels special yet totally unpretentious, making it perfect for anything from a casual dinner to a celebratory meal. If you’re a fan of top-quality Italian food with a seasonal twist, Trullo is a must-visit. Highly recommended!

Having discovered this restaurant on a must visit list I booked a dinner with my colleagues while we were in London. The menu offers excellent options, food is well-prepared of high-quality ingredients and taste didn't disappoint, but service is too efficient ...lacking in a warmth and effusiveness one expects to find in an Italian restaurant. We were also seated lower level which has none of the charm of upstairs (which come to think...no idea why we were downstairs when upstairs was mostly empty as we had an early reservation). In general the feeling I had from the moment we arrived was rushed. We ordered appetizers, a very nice bottle of wine, bread (the thing I enjoyed most) and our mains, and were verbally hurried through the desert course. In hindsight, we probably should have met up at the wine bar or pub across the street beforehand for socializing and then just come to eat. I know turning tables provides profit but when a customer selects a good bottle of wine that should buy them a little grace. All things considered, I've had far more enjoyable experiences.

It is a very noisy restaurant. We four found it difficult to hear each other. Husband had a pasta for a starter then a pork chop. He enjoyed the chop. I had the mozzarella and black tomatoes which was nice but they were not generous with the dressing. My pasta with chopped shellfish was not very nice. The fish had been pulverised into a slightly crunchy topping on the pasta . It tasted more like greasy bread crumbs than shell fish. I left most of the topping. Normally I would have complained but the couple we were with had booked weeks before and I did not wish to upset them. Trullo is pretentious and does not have that Italian generosity in my opinion. I would not recommend it.

The food at this restaurant is good, but it doesn’t quite reach exceptional. There’s a noticeable British influence over the Italian dishes—most evident in an overly generous use of pesto on the burrata, which overpowers rather than complements. The pasta is fresh and well-made, but again, the sauce is a bit excessive, masking some of the delicacy of the dish. Dessert followed the same pattern: the lemon tart was enjoyable, but not something that would make me rush back. Overall, a solid meal.

Fantastic dining experience! Trullo is undoubtedly one of the very best (if not the best) restaurant in the area. They have got everything down to perfection, from the service and atmosphere to the food and wine! Having wanted to come here for quite some time (ever since buying their fabulous cookbook), we came by for lunch, and it certainly did not disappoint. We had mozzarella, scallops, and langoustines to start. All delicious, but the scallops and langoustines were absolutely stand-outs in both flavours and presentation. For the main we both went for the pappardelle with beef shin – which was incredibly tender and tasty. Due to some unforeseen traffic challenges getting there, we unfortunately ended up being a bit delayed as a complete company, but I was seated on time and the service staff was incredibly courteous and understanding, which turned what could have been an uncomfortable wait into an incredibly inviting one. And seeing as they have some delicious wines available, not a problem at all. Needless to say, I will absolutely be returning, and cannot wait to do so.

The service was appalling, they forgot to put our main dish order through which meant we were waiting approx 45 mins for our mains and we flagged it with the team and they admitted they had forgotten to put it through. Not acceptable. Our server was just floating around the restaurant, not observing anything happening around her. We barely got an apology and gave us a tirimasu for free. I didn’t want anything for free for the sake of acknowledging it. The team could have offered a round of drinks whilst we were waiting. They didn’t do anything to try and make it better. We were sat next to the door and they kept opening the door to let smoke out of the restaurant (not the experience you’d want when it’s 5 degrees outside) all the fans in the restaurant were on, just blowing over everything I.e. menus and candles. Seems to have been a problem in the restaurant yesterday and the team could have maybe mentioned this, instead of masking over everything and creating a bad experience.

I sent this directly to the restaurant a week ago but they have yet to acknowledge it…so posting it on here…pretty poor Hi, we had lunch there on Sunday at 12:30pm and I wanted to give some feedback. The food was delicious and the service was cordial and efficient, I cannot fault either. However, we ended up having to leave half our desserts and take away the rest of our bottle of wine. We were served our desserts at 1:50 and when I asked if we could have a few more minutes to finish them we were told there was a 2pm reservation so we would need to leave the table by then. While I fully understand our reservation was for 90min I was surprised there was no buffer of even say 10-15minutes between table bookings. Either way I don’t think you should serve people another course if there’s not enough time to eat it. We did ask if there was another area we could finish it in (bar etc) and told there was none. Again while the food was excellent I would expect slightly better from what is clearly an excellent restaurant.

Fantastic food - I had a mozzarella and pumpkin salad, pici with a garlic cream sauce, and beautifully soft ricotta donuts, and everything was excellent (particularly the fresh and authentic pasta). Friendly staff, very relaxed.

My partner and I came here as he was keen to come having loved Padella, Trullo's sister restaurant out near Borough Market. However, where that was a nice surprise, we did find ourselves slightly disappointed by Trullo having had quite high expectations. That being said, we did have a rather pleasant experience her for lunch. What was also encouraging was that there were no qualms about us sharing dishes so that we could experience all 4 courses on the menu. We shared two starters, bread, a pasta dish, the lamb and a dessert with a couple of aperitifs. Overall, the main standout dish was the lamb which we thoroughly enjoyed. I enjoyed the burrata with chestnuts but my partner felt there was something missing in the flavour. The beef shin ragu pasta was nice but the portion was very small compared to other pasta dishes we saw others eating. We had a very friendly server who was very attentive. However, the food was quite slow to come between courses meaning that we were in the restaurant for more than two and a half hours - quite lengthy for lunchtime, but with it being the holidays there may have been staff shortages in the kitchen. Overall, we were glad to have experienced Trullo. For the price point though we probably wouldn't hurry back.

Overall experience I loved. Downstairs there are vault like enclaves and it felt private. The vegan/vegetarian options were much more limited compared with the non-vegetarian selections.

4.5 Went here for a night out with my husband and we were both very happy with the quality of the food and service. Upstairs is much more intimate and romantic—downstairs, where we sat, is brighter and more casual but still lovely. The chopped beef filet was unctuous in the best possible way, as the olive oil used is divine. The skate was so incredible crispy on the outside but stayed moist and delicate on the inside. The panna cotta with bitter caramel was the perfect way to end the meal.

Brilliant experience. The food was of high quality and fresh ingredients. The bruschetta with tartare on was amazing, and the lamb was rich and perfectly cooked. The staff were friendly and the atmosphere was relaxed. I would 100% recommend.

Wonderful meal. Food was excellent, cocktails and wine by the glass well recommended and warm professional service. Highlights for me were the clam starter, ragu and cacio pepe pastas and panna cotta dessert. One of my best meals of 2024.

The food was delicious, especially the burrata, but the pasta portions were quite small. Also we were celebrating a birthday, which I did specify to them when I made the reservation, however they completely ignored it.

We came to Trullo after it came recommended to us for Great Italian food - it located a stones throw away from Highbury and Islington station. The table was located in the basement, giving the evening a very intimate feel. The service was good and prompt. However, they seemed quite busy overall. When cocktails arrived, they were good with the negorni in particular tasting great. The food was generally very good with the Pici cacio e pepe tasting great with plenty of depth to the dish. In addition to this, we sampled the desserts the triamasu and lemon tart were amazing also! I wasn't a fan of the Tagliarini crab & focaccia starter- as I felt this lacked depth in its favour, and the bread tasted and felt very similar to a sourdough rather than a great tasting focaccia Overall, it was a very good Italian with good service and atmosphere but not my favourite Italian place London.

Had the vegetarian fare, which was lovely even if it didn't blow the mind. The service was horrendous with the waiters constantly reminding us of the time we had to give up the table (we left 5 mins earlier than our timeslot ended)

My husband and i recently dined here for a date night. It was our first time and it did NOT disappoint. We were seated downstairs in a little hut which was so lovely and a total vibe. The service was wonderful and kind. We opted for the burrata and croquettes to start and then had the Ragu and the cacio pepe. Amazing from start to finish. Can’t wait to come back.

We tried to get a table for few months in this restaurant and finally made it for my husband birthday. We weren't disappointed. The restaurant is cute not too over the top. Quite cosy even if I think the table clothes could be a bit nicer (as in paper). We had a romantic table in the underground which was perfect for the occasion. The waitress was very welcoming and nice the entire time. The menu is quite selective but I like it as it feels more authentic. We had olives as starter, I had the beef ragu pasta and my husband the fettucini. Both were very tasty and delicious. And for dessert the lemon tard and gorgonzola cheese. Same desserts were perfect. Drink wise, my husband had a campari spritz and classic negroni and weren't disappointed. Overall we recommend this restaurant as the quality of the food was really good and we had a nice evening.

This place is a hidden secret and by me writing a review about it, half of me hopes that it still stays a secret, but it's just too good to not tell others about. Go for the coffee, I haven't found a place anywhere near or far that takes the attention and care for their coffee as this place. I've only been for breakfast but I've been meaning to go back and try all their other stuff because it all looked so good. It's just worth the drive, early in the morning take the other half for a quiet, delicious breakfast and you'll keep going back.
