Tropical Turtle Caribbean Restaurant in Mendip

Couldn’t have asked for a better experience, truly amazing food at a very reasonable price, without a shadow of a doubt the best meal out I’ve had in years. Staff were delightful and the chef deserves his own restaurant. Will definitely be returning….. very soon.

We booked a table on Boxing Day which I booked in October through messenger, I asked if they were open over Christmas and they said they were only closed Christmas Day, so booked a table at 7pm on Boxing Day which I got a message to say it was booked, we were really looking forward to the meal because we had been there before and it was lovely, but when we turned up it was closed, so disappointed, not good customer service they did not bother to inform us so we went somewhere else, not even a apology, this place does not like bad reviews

My partner and I have been wanting to visit since you opened, but decided to save our first visit for a special occasion which was our anniversary this weekend. We had a fantastic time, the food and rum punch were delicious! Sitting upstairs with the smoke and aromas from the grill added to the superb atmosphere and the staff were all friendly and attentive. The card and flowers were an unexpected, personal touch which made the night extra special. Thank you! We look forward to visiting again and trying a few more things on the menu! ❤💛💚

I was not happy in the slightest with my meal at tropical turtle they are good things but many more bad. Firstly ... I had precooked the table and when I arrived they didn't have me in the booking even tho I had an email to prove it. But we were seated. Chicken wings were lovely. I had fritters, they were mushy greesy soggy batter that had not one bit of seasoning on them. But the mango sauce was delicious I had the platter .... Fried chicken was dry, rice bland and mushy and plantain was not nice curry was nice itself. Cocktails were nice but nothing special. But worse of all I felt like I was in a bbq and just kept getting overcome by smoke upstairs, and when I left I stank like I had been at a bbq all day. Not at all good and will not be returning....

Me and my partner arrived for our booking at tropical turtle for 8:30pm on 31/10/21, to find the place closed, we called and knocked the door but the place was evidently shut, the booking was confirmed way ahead of time, absolutely disgusted at the fact we were not notified, if things happen it takes nothing to call and inform the customer the place is closed so we could make a booking elsewhere, thoroughly disappointed for our last night in Weymouth.

What a find. Fantastic food and delightful staff. Everything was perfect, the salt cod fritters, the curry goat and the cocktails. A must if you are in the area.

We booked the bottomless brunch as we were having a celebration weekend. However on arrival we were told there was no Cava (and in fact no pornstar martinis) available leaving a very limited choice of drinks with this offer so we changed to the main menu. Disappointing. My friend ordered a pina colada which was awful and all 4 of us tried it and couldn’t detect any alcohol. It was replaced, with an apology and no argument at all, by a rum punch which was excellent. So were our second ones - excellent! The loo was grubby and not great (tho fabulous seat). So that’s all the less than positive points. Our waiter was fairly new but was very helpful. Hope it goes well for you. The honey chicken wings to start were fabulous (and those are big chickens!). Definitely worth a try. Two of us had goat curry and that was gorgeous. A real kick to it but not too much. My friend tried a bit having not chosen it because she’d tried it somewhere before and not liked it and she regretted her choice. Having said that she said her fried chicken was excellent. So, not the best start with the lack of cava but an enjoyable time with some excellent food.

we came to the tropical turtle for a late night dinner and the workers were so friendly. the wait for the food was quite a while but it was worth it for the quality meals. they also make excellent drinks at the bar. so overall spectacular and would highly recommend.

I have read these reviews with an open mind. Visited the turtle while on holiday from Southampton, we were looking for flavours that we do not cook at home. The Turtle did that for us, excellent service and food. I had salt fish fritters and goat curry, these were really good. The night was wet and the restaurant was leaking but the staff were coping well under extreme circumstances. When in Weymouth again would definitely visit.

The waiter was very good and so polite. The restaurant was a bit scruffy. Toilets were not very clean and no toilet roll. Food was ok but won’t be in a rush to return

Booked while on holiday on the basis of the positive reviews. On arrival we found the guy in charge to be friendly and engaging in banter with customers. Food was generally good and cocktails were nice. Have to mention this however, there was one thing that seriously affected our experience and that was while watching the kitchen activity from our seating above, I witnessed the assistant kitchen guy (shaved/bald head) picking his nose, wiping it on his apron and then continuing to handle the utensils etc in the kitchen! Would not recommend purely for this reason.

Bit disappointing really. Arrived on a Saturday night after reading the reviews & decided to give it a go as we love jerk food. Greeted downstairs & shown to an upstairs table in a really hot room. So some of the fans were put on. Ordered the food & drink. There seemed to be plenty of staff but they had a clear focus on take aways & us diners were really treated as secondary citizens & service was a bit slow. We arrived at 28:30 & the restaurant wasn’t busy. Although half an hour later it filled up. Cocktail tasted really weak with minimal alcohol. Lager was as flat as…. Chickpea patty was very, very greasy. 1/4 jerk chicken undercooked & a bit red. Could have done with more marinading & more jerk sauce. Rice & peas brilliant. Fried chicken & sweet potato fries were ok but not brilliant. As we ate though the smoke levels increased from the grill below us to the extent that everyone on the room began to complain & rub their eyes. Despite all available windows being opened. Back home this morning my clothes stink of jerk chicken smoke! Great idea & could be so much better. Come on guys!

The staff were excellent; friendly and attentive the food was out of this world. We had a sharing platter with a taste of the different offerings from their menu. It had very generous portions and everything tasted incredible. It was like a taste sensation in every mouthful! The ambience was perfect and the cocktails finished off a perfect evening. Will definitely be going back soon!

Great to experience caribbean cuisine in homely Weymouth. The goat curry and jerk pan were absolutely immense, the wings starter equally as good. Excellent attentive service, anyone looking for a different vibe for a meal out, give this a whirl, it will not disappoint.

You the moment you enter you’re greeted by the lively Chef and his team. This is truly an experience and do not take his words to heart if you’re easily offended. The food is fantastic and there certainly aren’t any half measures with the cocktails.
