Warmly welcomed into the restaurant by Ethan, who served us throughout. It was our first visit and Ethan provided the right amount of advice but enough time to make our decisions. We opted for the set menu and it didn't disappoint every dish was both generous and delicious. Have already recommended this hidden gem to local friends and will return again soon.

Beautiful Japanese lunch and drinks in this Japanese local gem where the food is as good as any high end restaurant. Strongly recommend the Yaki Cabbage, tuna sashimi, tempura and ribs. Great Sake and vegetarian options.

Not a sushi eater but my son was taking out my wife and I and they got the vote! Small and intimate. Great staff. Fantastic fresh, tasty food. I could be a convert!! They were doing a noticeably brisk delivery too

Waited 45 mins for the first starter to arrive. We also ordered a set with skewers / sushi . Almost 2 hrs later and the skewer still hasnt arrived. The sushi is not too bad.

Visited this gem in Coulsdon after a friend had told me it was better than Sushi Samba. We tried a number of different dishes ranging from sushi to gyoza and bao buns. All the food was excellent. The restaurant is quite small and was busy (we went on a Friday evening), so I would definitely recommend booking in advance. It is a little pricey but worth the extra cost in my opinion.

Been coming here for quite a while now and it's always been a great meal. Food is brilliant with a huge range of options to choose from, the staff are always helpful with suggestions and explaining new dishes and always, always cheerful.

The best range of flavours I’ve eaten. Omg what and amazing experience the set menus just keeps coming the food is like a roller coaster of surprises every dish holds its own space and the flavour’s texture and presentation is stunning. The staff are absolutely amazing and well educated in the food and ingredients and prep. Just wow!

Quality food, quality service! My first visit, and I can't wait to go back. The food was absolutely amazing 💯 Kudos to the waiter... waiters like him, are gold dust! 💫 He knew the menu, advised us on what to have and was not disappointed in the slightest. Honestly the best waiter I have ever come across. Charismatic, professional and efficient..I was shocked when he said he was only 17! Sadly, we didn't catch his name.. but a little star, his parents should be so proud. It's a rare find to have all 3 elements of a google review ticked but this place really is a gem we're lucky to have. My wife and I have been there twice and the food is unbelievable, not only does the head chief live and breath food, but his front of house wife effortlessly takes care of her customers and staff. We've been lucky enough to sample nearly all the japanese restaurants in the south east and without question this is top 3 possibly the best.

Terrible food! The sushi roll presentations were terrible. Definitely not authentic. I don't know how they got their high rating. Teriyaki chicken and miso salmon were burnt and overcooked. I feel completely ripped off coming here.

Excellent! Best sushi I have had in years! My friend and I had a lovely variety of sashimi and sushi rolls. Only one cooked dish. All were fresh and delish! The service was friendly! We went on a Tuesday night and it was full. The place is small. So make sure you reserve a table. I will be back for sure.

Everytime we go it gets better! Absolutely fabulous restaurant and team. Just can be hard to book sometimes.

This is our 4th or 5th time here, as the food is always really good. This time though, the food was still good. But the service was very slow and we were loosing appetite by the time they came to the table. Probably just a particularly busy day

Fantastic Service and delicious food, not a single miss on the menu !

the main woman was great and cracking jokes left right and centre. We inhabited a central table in the heart of the restaurant, good atmosphere happy people surrounded us. Food was top notch, nice and succulent. The most succulent dish was the beer steak mmm yh that was boss. Cannot forget the wine, slipped down and made the mind go wow. About to end the dinner with a potential winner… ordering the vanilla cheesecake hopefully it doesn’t make my arteries opaque.

We ordered a delivery today and it was terrible. The quality of the rolls and nigiri was very poor, tiny, bland, absolutely no taste, lots of rice and tiny amounts of filling. The presentation of everything was even worse. 3 tiny tiny tiny rolls, 2 pieces of nigiri, several small pieces fried chicken bites and 3 tempura prawns were £70+. This was our first and last time with this place.

Having heard good things we decided to tried this place! Amazing food! Both the presentation and the flavour are really good. I highly recommend a visit here!

It’s not what it used to be. Short ribs a joke for the price. Has it twice previously and amazing home cooked meat produce. Now a poor man’s portion. Plus overall portion sizes seem a lot smaller and hiked up prices. We said we wouldn’t go back as feel a bit ripped off. Most expensive place we have eaten in a year or so based on prices now.

Special place. Amazing service from the owner made you feel part of the furniture. And the food, the food! Just fab. Go for one of the set menus and you're getting great VFM. The skewers were my personal favourite but the sushi was fresh and delicious also. Stop reading and get booking your table, you will need a booking at this intimate restaurant!

This was a real find. The hosts were incredibly friendly. The restaurant is small but has more character than the usual chain you see. The food was tasty and well presented. It’s not cheap but good Japanese food isn’t. Will definitely be coming back as it felt like a great evening out.

We had takeaways from here for the first time (for two people) and was not impressed. Portion size was super cheeky! We spent around £40, and with Taya Kokoro, this would mean leftovers that I could have the next day... this left us both hungry. All tubs were only half-filled... and you know they're taking the piss when you don't even get a full tub of rice! Flavours were above average though, so gave three stars. Still, won't be trying from here again.

( THIS PLACE IS GOOD FOR SUSHI ONLY NOT FOR COOKED FOOD ) My wife and I eat at this restaurant a couple of times when it first opened a couple of years ago and thought the food was just ok and not worth the effort to go back there. we recently decided to give it another go and sadly it was a S__T show , the only thing we got good service with was the drinks we ordered. we ordered 10 small dishes and they managed to bring out 9 out of the 10 small dishes in one hour, by then we were fed-up and wanted to go because the hot food was pretty average, you could tell most of it was out of a packet, the most disturbing experience was having to listen to the owner shouting as loud as she could at the chef and the girls working for her , this was disgusting bullying behaviour towards the staff that made it unconfutable for customers.

Brilliant food, but there is so little space between some of the tables. They need to re-arrange the tables and possibly remove one small table from the restaurant. I barely managed to squeeze out when leaving without touching the other's table food. We will not return at peak times.

My wife and I went for dinner, cannot fault the food, had the PAC 2 set menu as this was our first visit. Can not fault the food, excellent flavours, great presentation, more than enough for two people, definitely 5 stars. Maybe as it was a Saturday evening, and the restaurant is small and intimate, the service was a little slow. A couple who arrived after us were served first, the various dishes arrived “one after the other”, unfortunately we had a 10-15 minute wait mid meal for the last dishes to arrive. The delay could also have been affected by the steady stream of takeouts being collected. Service 3 stars (maybe we were just unlucky). Overall a great place, good food and very friendly and helpful staff.

I have heard good things from a few friends about this place before I went. We had the two pac set menu and it was just the right portion for two people. The sushi is really fresh and tasty. What makes it even better is you don’t have to go to London for such high quality food. Will definitely be our new regular place to go!

First time visiting and will definitely not be my last. Food was amazing !! The waiting staff very attentive and an brief explanation of the food when it arrived. Service was a little slow but this can be attributed to our timing - 2 bigger tables sat down just before us.

Having been to this place a few times before I felt the quality has dropped a bit. The first few dishes started off really well but then slowly lacked a bit of flavour. I did have the tasting menu so maybe in the future I would just order dishes of the normal menu. The desert/cheesecakes were rock solid as if they had been taken out of the freezer and left to thaw for a bit. They lacked flavour and seem like they were bought in from somewhere like Costco.

Fantastic sushi and great service. Edamame was charred which added a tasty twist. Soft shell crab was delicious and fresh. Rolls are pretty big and generous and all at a reasonable price.

Our second visit. Food was excellent as ever and served quickly once our order had been taken. However, despite being very slow to take the order they felt able to rush us at the end after a large group turned up. Quite disappointing really and not what I expected.

I love the food served here - it's always busy and they a terrific trade in takeaway, booking is essential as it is so small - would love a bigger restaurant, but they know you if you visit and she is very happy to recommend food for your palate and budget/dietary needs. People come from far and wide to eat here! We are so lucky to have this wonderful restaurant here...

The set menus are very good value for money

Came to Toriton Izakaya for a Valentine’s Day meal and we left super impressed! This is why I love to travel around and try new restaurants based on reviews. Me and my partner shared the 2 PAC set menu but there’s so many other choices. I could even say this is the best restaurant experience I’ve had in a long time, the service + the food 🍱

Amazing food and great service. We will be back. Particularly happy that they offer a single option on set menu. With my hubby being vegetarian I rarely get to try set menus.

Incredibly rude staff. Our delivery order was missing an item. Instead of any apology or trying to fix the issue. TWO of their employees, not one but TWO, argued on the phone with me. Tried to cut me off when I explained my frustration (because they insisted they were right. The items weren’t missing. To take it up with Deliveroo). The funny thing is the item that is missing isn’t ticked off on the receipt - which is normally the way you check if it’s properly packed. But they wouldn’t even listen to me explain this. Just kept cutting me off to say “will you listen to us”. I am really shocked at this treatment. Never ordering from here again. Not even the first time we have had items missing in a delivery….

We were celebrating our anniversary, chose Toriton Izakaya based on reputation and it comfortably lived up to it. The food was superb and the staff friendly / attentive. The short rib literally fell off the bone and the sashimi had so much flavour. We all left feeling full and satisfied. We will definitely be returning.

A boring weekend, decided to go check out a restaurant we have not been before. So found this one with v high ratings, drove 25 mins here. Unfortunately, worst sushi I have ever tasted. The sushi used very low quality rice, and is too gooey, far too much water, almost like a congee, but at the time, under cooked, has hard cores?! Don’t even understand how could they manage to achieve that?! And it was not properly flavoured either. Incredibly bad. I forced myself to eat some and for the rest, I ate the fish and left the rice, just because I paid. If it wasn’t for the money, I would not abuse myself like that. I don’t understand how could it have such high ratings. People in this area don’t ever go to a Japanese restaurant in other parts of London? There’s only one waitress and one chef ( the owner?). So needless to say the service speed is very slow. As we speak, there are guests sick of waiting and left. And yet the gentleman came and cleaned the floor with his hands (picking up bits of food), moved on to serving food and drinks, delivering straws, without washing his hands:). The hygiene was four stars for very obvious reasons then. Oh to do it justice, the skewers were not bad. But the not bad here is not the usual British way of saying it tastes good. It is just, not bad, better than the inedible sushi.

An absolute gem of a find. The restaurant is a small but cosy local restaurant, however the service and quality of food feels more comparable to well-established central London eateries. The husband/wife team who own the venue are pro's, with the gent taking care of the kitchen and the lady (an absolute ray of sunshine), at the front of house. We opted for the "Full Moon" set menu at £42 per person and the Hitachino Japanese Ale. This is my second visit to Toriton Izakaya, and it was still as spectacular the second time around - a true testament to their consistency. Highly recommended for a date night or high-end local dining. A true Japanese treat. To the owners - Doumo Arigatou!

If you’re looking for something different, this little restaurant is really super. The food was amazing - gorgeous sushi and teriyaki dishes. The couple who own this place are really lovely and very committed to delivering high quality food. Highly recommended if you can get a table. It’s very booked up. The take away is also extremely popular.

Had high hopes after reading the reviews, unfortunately very disappointed. Soggy tempura, overcooked skewers and drenched in teriyaki. The cauliflower dish and the glass of lovely Malbec were the only positives.

Tried a few take outs from here over lockdown and promised ourselves we would dine in. The food both take out and eat in was amazing although obviously you get the full experience ambience and warm welcome dining in. Excellent food, amazing hospitality, really made us feel like we were at a friend's house rather than a restaurant. Cannot compliment this restaurant enough for both the food and the service. I had never had sushi or Japanese cuisine before and wow what a way to get an introduction. Book it, you will not be disappointed!

Superb food, with great flavours….Decent service

What a treat - we have been meaning to try this Japanese Restaurant for a long time - unable to eat in due to injured coeliac daughter but talked to the owner and GF was not a problem - my wife’s birthday and the food was sublime - definitely a return visit needs to be scheduled.

I was blown away with the taste and unique favours experienced here. Compliments to the chef. I haven't really had the chance to know more about the story of the place, I can taste that there is a lot of thought and creativity put into the dishes I tasted. The mission is to try the next tasting menu boasting new and special dishes.

My boyfriend and I have just had the loveliest time! Service was efficient and fast. The staff were AMAZING. A very friendly, vibrant staff team of three who went above and beyond to make sure we had a good time. The food was great. As a vegetarian, I’m often worried about my options when it comes to sushi but there was plenty on the menu for all people with all sorts of dietary requirements. We most definitely be back soon.
