Tony's Pie-n-Mash in Epping Forest

Ambience is traditional. Nice and clean too. Queue out of the door at 3pm - waited 15 mins. More staff would be a bonus at busy times. Pies had thick gravy which isn't so traditional and liquor not very tasty. I wouldn't return.

I've gone to a lot of Pie n Mash shops in and around London over the year and I can say Tony's is by far the best. Really, really good, from start to finish. Plenty of seating and very clean. As for the pie n mash, some of the best I've ever had and a special shout out for the liquor which was not weak and runny like you get at some other places. Only word of advice, it gets very busy around 12 till 2. so you may have to wait, but it's worth it. 10/10

The best pie & mash I’ve ever had! Honestly, absolutely amazing! The taste and quality of the food was outstanding and portion size was very generous and very friendly staff! Can’t recommend it enough!

Have visited many pie & mash shops and this is up there ! The lady serving was very friendly and professional, fast service and the pies were brand new, will definitely be back, well done team !

The owners are decent but the brunette lady serving let the place down. I will try to locate a way to notify the owners. This lady who served us was RUDE for no reason, seemed to have been in a bad mood before and used her bare hands taking money and picking up the pies with the same hands I was I shocked. She let down the place and needs to go.

Not bend it like Beckham but eat it like Beckham!!! Like I said I am trying to eat my way through every pie & mash shop in the UK whether they are good or bad. I knew I was going to like the one in Waltham Abbey from the photos I have seen as I judge it by the clarity and colour of the liquor and the pie filling. Both the pie and liquor looked amazing which was to my liking and it turns out to be David Beckhams regular go to place as well. Tony's Pie & Mash is probably the furthest I have travelled for a pie mash. The journey had to be made because the travel fares are going up by the end of this month. I thought I was going to get away with the pay as you go because Waltham Cross is in zone 7 but it turns out the buses are not London buses so my bus journey cost as much as my meal there!!! Overall, the trip for the pie mash was totally worth it because the minced beef in the pie was really good and flavourful in that really nice rich beefy sauce. The liquor was just how I liked it because it is made with eel and it has a nice clarity with a leafy green colour. Along with that, lashings and lashings of vinegar and white pepper are a must to make it heavenly. While I was there, I met a guy who also likes to try every pie & mash shop in UK and its good to know that he likes what I like. The food is annoyingly good at Tony's so I am tempted to visit again! The buses out of town are not that frequent so I was really lucky the bus driver let me get on after he just pulled off.

Been going to Tony’s for nigh on 20 years since I was a young boy. Best P+M for miles. Double double with a bit’a liquor always hits the spot!!

Been numerous times now & haven’t had a bad experience as of yet. Whilst I can’t compare the food to others or proclaim to be a traditionalist, personally I think the food is decent & most importantly is always served hot. For all the reviews on here both positive & negative, the sheer amount of customers throughout the day is a true indicator of the food & venue. Like a conveyor belt of people…

I took myself to Tony's for lunch recently. I ordered double pie and mash. It quite simply tasted of nothing. I mean nothing. The meat pie, liquor, even the mash.....nothing at all except salt, way too much salt. I tried dumbing down the saltiness by adding vinegar. It made it barely edible but I still couldn't get my head around the nothing taste. Maybe my assessment is a bit harsh. I used to live in Manzes and Kelly's back in my undergraduate days at Polytechnic of East London where a student special was 90p. Those were the good old days. The pies were fresh and flavourful and you left satisfied. I'll take a trip there soon and compare. Maybe things have changed. The service at Tony's was nice.

As a vegetarian one of the things I had to give up was authentic pie and mash, so imagine my surprise when I found out Tony's did vegetarian 'mince style' pies. I've been to other pie and mash places where they serve vegetable pies, doesn't quite hit the spot though as the 'mince style' here. Service is always great, the staff are lovely. I've ordered on Uber Eats even a few times too as well as popping in and it's consistently delicious.

Went there at 1pm they had run out of eels Also hardly any drinks left only sprite and tango. Could only get pie and mash the mash tasted disgusting and a pie was awful. There was only gravy in the pie nothing else it was disgusting. They have no eels or drinks at 1 pm which is lunchtime if they have no stock of any kind they should not be open service was awful as well. Don’t go to his pie mash shop is the worst of its kind in the whole country.

I first had pie and mash from here last year and it was great. This time I ordered for delivery and the although the pie filling was as delicious as before, the actual pie crust was soooo undercooked and not flaky as previously. This has put me off eating from here for a while. Shame.

Well had a bad experience with this pie and mash shop despite ordering my pie and mash for a set time yesterday and due to traffic I was was a minutes late to collect, onnarrival they had given it away!!!! I had driven at least an hour to collect it! Then they decided to get it back from the person that had given it too, I refused and said politely I won’t be coming back here!covid etc..... don’t like leaving a bad review but this is what happened.

I’m glad that I tried this place. Friends said that they were going to take us for a great pie and mash. I’m not sure what the fuss was about. Ok, it wasn’t expensive, but a great pie and mash it wasn’t. The food was hot which was important, the gravy was tasty. But honestly a Pieminister pie from the Co-op, mash from Aunt Bessie and some Bird Eye garden peas and Bisto would have been several times better. Sorry

After hearing much about Tony’s restaurant and not living too far away, I decided to go with my wife, the smell then the taste took me back to my youth was so glad to have gone I will return, better than I remembered as many have closed in the traditional areas of the Pie and mash shop, so thank you plus friendly staff.

Came here on a Saturday afternoon for pie and mash. The restaurant is nice and clean with plenty of tables. The pie and mash was ok, not the best and not the worst I’ve tasted. The pies were a bit burnt and the pastry wasn’t the best but it was nice and I would return

A Londoner who’s loved Pie & Mash since I was a child and sampled many ... I recognise a Londoner will always have a favourite, but I ate here with my family and was horrified at the overriding taste of Salt that even the Chilli Vinegar couldn’t disguise. The Bottom of the Pies were undercooked, along with a pale looking Fruit Pie with thick dark orange custard, of the like I haven’t seen or tasted before. Gave my grandchildren a raging thirst and was expensive to boot.

I have been to Tony's many times and each time we have quality pie and mash...love the place.When we are finished always say...you know what I could eat that all over again.

A wasted journey to another pie shop led us to this gem - definitely worth the extra drive. Fabulous pies, lovely staff. Will definitely be back for more.

I had eels and mash, and a pot of jellied eels to take away, it was all scrumptious, my friend who I went with had the pie and mash, and he said they were the best pies he had ever had.

I love pie & mash and have eaten it all my life. My local is Manze’s Walthamstow but I thought I would give a few different shops a trial. Tony’s was ok. The food was hot and the pie filling, mash and liquor were tasty but I just didn’t like the pastry. It was too cardboardy and crusty for me. I much prefer the Manze’s soft pastry. However, this is a personal taste. Manze’s is still top of my list but I think I’d rate Tony’s a second place and Robin’s a very poor third!

I do like a good pie and mash from time to time and this one is good but not quite as good as the ones that I was brought up on (all the Cooke’s family ones in the East end). Saying that though it is one of the best in the area :)

Pie and mash the traditional way. The girls behind the counter always friendly, chatty and accommodating. Have been coming here for over 10 years and never had a bad meal.

Have been going to Tony's for 8 years as it is my grandchildren's favourite takeaway. Good plain food and it saves me cooking once a week. But, the star is Channel who knows their names, takes time to chat to them and makes the ordering a really family occasion. Love you Channel from Lola and George

Didn't go much in the pastry but the filling was tasty and the mash was ok liquor and vinegar too but the pastry really was not good and we ended up leaving it.

Food does not look very exciting nor is there much of a choice, however the flavours of what they do serve is astounding.

We were really looking forward to pie n mash, liquor. And drove a long way.

My plumber brought my husband this pie n mash as he comes from the East End and he said the pie and the liquor was to die for.He did add vinegar as he said that is how they used to eat at home I do not like the liquor but I did try the pie and it was excellent

Been using Tony’s for ages and love it. Best in the area by a mile . Great atmosphere and always friendly . Just think they need to ease up on the salt a little in the liquor .

This was our first visit to a Pie and Mash restaurant and not our last. We enjoyed a typical pie and mash meal with liquor which consists of parsley sauce all green washed down with a typical cup of tea. As I was born within the sound of Bow Bells I consider myself a true cockney and I finally enjoyed a true cockney meal. I met a lady who visits monthly and recommended the eels "they fall off the bone excellent cooking" she said well I was not brave enough as yet to try the eels and I ate my way through this pie and mash with liquor and enjoyed a good cup of tea along side. We shared a cherry pie with custard this too was a first and jolly nice too. I saw a wall full of photos mainly boxers also Posh and Becks that visit this venue. The service was fast either served or you collect your own dish and very fast service too. The venue was airy and clean and had a good turnover of visitors amazingly fast service really. This was indeed a bonus find on our day out.

I haven't had pie and mash for years. My family came from Islington when a trip up Chapel Market for pie and mash was a regular treat as young children but as we moved years ago I haven't had for a very long time. What a find, what a gem and what memories Tony's Pie-n-Mash brought back. Loved the atmosphere, everybody was friendly and tucking in to their pies, stewed eels or fruit pie and custard. Mum sat down and I ordered, service was speedy and friendly. OMG, I took two plates of what looked like excellent pie and mash back to our table, we smothered the plate in pepper and vinegar and dived in. You should have seen the smile on my mum's face, a very rare occurrence since my dear father passed away end of last year. 'Oh, this is lovely, really lovely and like I remember it with dad' she said. Indeed it was excellent, I haven't seen mum eat so quickly for a long time, she wolfed it down in record time as did I. It was fabulous, brought back incredibly happy memories of the past and also the future as now my brother wants to go. Thank you Tony's, lunch was fantastic and your food brought back a lot of happy childhood memories. If you see my other posts I am lucky to travel all over the world to some very nice places - nothing could have been better than the pie and mash I had yesterday, it really hit the spot!

Not had pie and mash for awhile so when it was put in front of me, I thought this is going to be tasty, and it was. So cheap, ( my brother paid ) Must go more often.

My partner big fan of pie and mash. Born in the East End London Hospital. Heard a lot about this place. Well, he enjoyed it ate every bit but thought the pie a bit meagre and lacked filling, however, i watched him eat it and he devoured it, perhaps he should have had the larger option, you can gave one pie two pie, or even three. Next time....... I am vegetarian and when asked for something the lady said it would be fifteen minutes so straight away i thought frozen I declined. The liquor is not an option for me as it has fish in it, which the lady made clear. My partner ordered the dessert and again was told you have to wait fifteen minutes, another frozen pie..... we waited he ate some of it but it wasn't nice with the custard very thick and horrible as was the pie, this is not their speciality though. Overall great pie and mash for die hards, order two pies though if you are hungry. Would not like to see places like this disappear and would support them when in the local. If you like pie and mash you will love it......

Traditional pie and mash that tastes great and is run by owners who actually have passion for what they do. David Beckham actually took the time out of his life to come here so you really need to go find out why. My family are regulars here and buy pie and mash every other week. You won't find another pie and mash shop like this one. If only they could have a Michellen start ...

Tried this for the first time. had never had liquor before either. It was a delight. Lots of food for the money and really tasty too. Highly recommend. Beats places like McDonald's any day!

This review can go so many ways…It might be hard for quite a few diners to understand the true value of Tony’s Pie-n-Mash shop. Many would not consider the not at all extraordinary mash potato, the little meat filled pies and the flavourless parsley sauce (liquor) to be a delicacy. But yet again, past all that, they all are. Together. Yes, the whole thing needs copious amounts of salt and pepper. And even a touch of vinegar (this is the first time in my life I’ve attempted to have mash and vinegar) to bring something, some kind of taste to the plate.But spending a few minutes here, at lunchtime on a weekday, I did see why Tony’s is and should be famous. It’s traditional. It’s local. It’s what people want. Even if most of them are past a certain age. It’s a place when people can exchange a couple of friendly worlds with the staff and between themselves. A place that is dear in their heart. I did eat my mash and pies, looking around with a smile. I did help a granny stand up from the table, she was that frail, to reach her walking frame. I was (apart from a couple of kids) the youngest there by quite a while. Yet it didn’t bother me. Neither did the food.Maybe David Beckham comes here because of the food, and it’s the food that’s ingrained into so many residents’ lives, but this place is much more, and I’m sure that it has a special and different meaning for all that come by it.

When ever we are visiting Essex we always go for pie, mash and liquor at Tony's. A typical pie and mash shop. Foods good, staff are friendly, the tea mugs could do with being replaced, there getting a bit tired.

must say this is the best place to have pie mash & liquor pies where excellent mash smooth i had gravy though was great highly recommend this place100% staff very friendly and helpful will visit again they do eels as well

went there new years eve. took it home it was awful. meat inside was like a load of slop nothing like proper mince meat. best pie and mash is kellys at debden real proper east end pie and mash. enfortunatly they wernt open new years eve. yuk wont go waltham abbey again waste of money

If you like Pie and Mash and do not want to go into London, this is about the best place outside the East End. Plenty of room in the restaurant, and the service is great, but most importantly the food is as good as you can find anywhere.

Came for the first time in a while & was not disappointed. Fast efficient service, piping hot & very tasty. Busy, friendly vibe too. Will definitely return.

If you have never experienced pie 'n mash then this is the place for you. No frills, good hot food, friendly service and original decor. If you don't like the liquor there is gravy, or none at all. Your choice. For the jellied eel fan, you will be in your element. Don't take my word for it, ask David Beckham. He visits here whenever he can. Enjoy!

I had heard about this place as a treat d.beckham enjoys ,thought I would give it a go .very much as the tin says .nice smooth mash ,pastry good on pie with OK filling .liquor more of an acquired taste but you have to give it a go .my college had the gravy which was spot on .well worth a visit .

Can't say much. Great pie's, fast service, what you see is what you get.Only problem you can get is finding a table or the Mash might be out. That's only cause they are so good.The mince beef pies are tasty, mash is smooth and the liquor is velvetly delicious!

I love this place. The food is always good the staff are always lovely and welcoming. The whole atmosphere is great in there prices are fair for the fairly large amount you get. Visited on a saturday lunch time with my OH. Obviously well liked locally as the queue was out the door. Service a bit slow as only one person serving, but everyone seemed happy to wait. OH had a 'double double' - double pie, double mash and liquor and I had pie, mash and gravy. Both generous portions, pies were very nice - well cooked with lots of filling, couple of lumps in the mash but nothing that would put me off and very nice gravy. OH thoroughly enjoyed his. Understand they make their own pies, one of the nicest pies I've had in a pie and mash shop. Tables were being cleared and cleaned quickly so coped with the busy lunchtime crowd. Pie and mash isn't fine dining, but if you're looking for a wholesome, well cooked, traditional meal you can't go wrong here.

It's been a few years since I had a plate of pie and mash. I don't ever remember it tasting this good but perhaps absence does make the heart grow fonder. Tony's is a fully tiled, counter service, cheap as chips pie and mash shop out in the glorious environs of gods own county Essex.I went for the big eels and mash plate, my partner went for pie. Her small portion was large, my large portion enormous and delicious? The word doesn't do justice to the taste sensations on the plate. I could have sat and drunk the liquor all afternoon, it was that good. Round off with a decent and ludicrously cheap cup of tea and we have a fabulous treat for the taste buds. One that, now located, will be repeated very soon

I have eaten double pie, liquor, mash and stewed eels in loads of Pie and Mash shops all over London. This one is the best by far. It is clean, welcoming and the food and afters, as us cockneys say, is better than any I have ever tasted. Kids, like my little niece Olivia, are made especially welcome. And if you are lucky, depending on which team you support of course, you may even see David Beckham tucking into pie and mash! He might be a multi-millionaire but he knows where they serve the best pie and mash in London!

Proper English food at its best ' the dogs as we say down souf ' .To honour the twenty five year anniversary of my fathers death the only way my dad would have wanted it, Double pie ,mash, liquor and a cup of rosie lee followed by fruit pie and custard.It was all served with a smile from the wonderful staff who made us fill very welcome.

Been a few times to this pie and mash shop,hoping that it would get better in time,95% of the time mash is lumpy and the pies seem sometimes under cooked.Use to go to the pie and mash shop at Harrow green in leytonstone,you will have to go a long way to beat that shop.

Visiting with friends from U.S.A. who love to come here when they are in this country....they love the eels.....

We travelled in rush hour traffic some distance to come here we arrived literally minutes before closing time but the staff served us and let us sit in and eat, very friendly very welcoming and excellent tasty food Thankyou ! Will Defo be back going to try and make it once a month :-)

Coming from bow east London we have great pie mash shop , Tony pie and mash are excellent lovely taste and top quality , the staff are friendly and make you feel so welcome , my family also have been to tony pie and mash and agree great food ,

I grew up in London and have since moved to Devon. The only thing I miss is Pie and Mash. There was plenty of pie and mash shops around but this one is the best.

I've been twice now. Pie, Mash and gravy both time - I must brave the liquor one time but I am from Yorkshire and old habits die hard.It's simple. It's great value. It's tasty. I'd definitely recommend if you like your food described as my previous statements.

Classic pie and mash shop with an expected family run decor and buzz about the place. Tony's always has people queuing outside but with fresh pies and quick service your not waiting long at all. True Pie and Mash shop and well worth a visit no matter where you're travelling from.

Heard so much about this pie-n-mash Shop and decided to visit today it was a cold windy day, sadly the dinner was not as warm as I would have liked it! But my father enjoyed his !not sure whatall the fuss was about But the old photos of sporting legends was worth a look.

I was a little worried after reading the reviews, but have to say I thought the food was lovely, pipping hot and plenty of it. I had pie mash and gravey and was really impressed.Staff were friendly and helpful and the price was also an added bonus. Well worth the trip and would highly recommend

Got a takeaway to warm for later which I always do from another but wanted to give this one a try. I will stick to my other pie n mash which is much further away. Unfortunately when I unwrapped the pies they looked undercooked and looked and felt like puff pastry but on eating them experience got worse as they were really salty and left a burnin/tingling sensation in my mouth. Mash was good though
