Dropped in for lunch with a friend. Decent selection on the menu board. However there were no prices on the menu board, thought nothing of it. It's a small local cafe how high could the prices be. We ordered two baked potatoes. What we received was the standard you'd expect from a small local cafe in a provincial village. When I went to pay the guy at the check out said that will be £16:10. I questioned if he'd got the right people. We paid £16:10 for two baked potatoes, two slices of bacon with a sprinkling of cheese, two lettuce leaves, a few spoons of couscous and two glasses of tap water (the lettuce leaf and couscous was apparently a 'side salad.') Absolutely criminal price. We will not be back.

Recently called into this cafe with a friend, it was 3.50pm on a Saturday afternoon. At the door we were told they were closing at 4.30pm but this was not a problem as we only wanted a quick coffee stop. There were two other tables occupies by ladies but we were socially distanced so all good. We ordered coffee and scones which arrived after about a 5 minute wait. This is when the problems started! The cafe is not big and a young man proceeded to start brushing round us, we asked politely if he would mind not brushing until we had finished eating, he actually smirked at us whilst continuing brushing and saying “I have to get this done we close at 4.30pm”. At 4.10pm the owner came round the three tables asking us to pay our bills which we did. At 4.20pm she came back to tell us they were closing at 4.30pm, I smiled and advised that we would be out the door before 4.30pm when we finished off our coffee. What happened next beggars belief, she told us we had to leave immediately as she had to clear the three tables to allow the staff to leave at 4.30pm. Seven ladies were hustled out and left standing in amazement on the pavement outside. We couldn’t believe what had just happened. The opening times were clearly displayed on the door.... Saturday to 5.00pm! This was our first visit to Markethill and we had enjoyed browsing round the shops but unfortunately this experience has left us questioning whether or not we would return to the town. If we do we will definitely not be returning to this establishment. Hopefully no one else gets caught out and this cafe amends the opening hours displayed on the door!

I don't wish to be to critical but I will say my visit today was very poor. My partner had ordered the special of the day , home made sausage rolls with chips and salad . Between four members of staff the sausage rolls were burnt first time around so we had to wait on them baking us fresh ones . A courtesy cup of tea while we waited would of been nice but wasn't offered . When the special did eventually arrive the sausage rolls weren't far of being burnt , the ends of the oven chips were black , and the salad was pathetic . I myself just had a cappuccino and slice of hot apple pie with Ice cream . If must say the portion size of the apple pie was very poor . While paying my bill my partner was asked what they had to drink and they replied , a glass of water and they thought £1:30 came up on the till but can't be sure . If we were indeed charged for a glass of tap water I think that's not on . What we got for £13:55 wasn't good value and I certainly won't be back . With Alexanders on their doorstep , and the Bawn pantry just on the outskirts of town Time out would need to improve .

So when I had a birthday coming up of my daughter, she recommended getting the traybakes from the cafe, for her wee birthday party. They were absolutely gorgeous!! I ordered 12 traybakes, and they were delivered on a wee tray, cut into 4's. My wee girl absolutely love them! Totally wished I would have gotten her birthday cake there too! Will definitely come back next year! And I'll definitely come back in the future!!

I went to this restaurant with my daughter as I wanted to spend some quality time with her. I had been twice before and wasn’t happy with the service or pricing but wanted to try one last time as it was local and would have been nice for catchup with friends. Well never again!!! I ordered peppered beef with rice at the high price of £7.95, a bottle of coke and a tea for myself, then I ordered a sausage and toast for my daughter and a glass of water. Well when the girl was coming to our table she had to squeeze between seats and two other tables to get to us. I watched as she tilted the tray will squeezing past then I seen the coke topple and the milk and water. All of which went right over my daughters head and clothes. I was so annoyed! As a mum with arthritis bathing a child is so difficult with my joints but yet I had to go home and bath my child again After being exhausted doing it that morning. Now mistakes happen and I appreciate that but the staff then tried to accuse my child of this incident as they claim she was not sitting on her seat properly!! What a lie and an insult! Considering I watched the waitress carrying the tray and seen exactly what happened this was so disappointing. Well if that wasn’t enough........ I nearly had a kitten when I seen the portion size!!!!!!! My goodness, with the price I was paying I was expecting a meal, not a taster!!! It honestly would not have filled a mouse!!!! Portion sizes are a disgrace and I found this on all the occasions I have been. The biggest insult came when I went to pay for it thinking that I would have been given it for free considering the enormity of the incident, let’s face it my child could have had third degree burns from the tea pot that was also on tray.

To become five star: - service would be better if one person dealt with you rather than two, or three people. - The scones should be freshly made in store. The ones we had where past their best, and looked store bought. - A qualified Barista. As the coffee was very bitter, and cool when served. We had a cappuccino and expresso. Went tonight for their Twighlight Tea. Food was beautifully presented and very tasty. Hot Chocolate was great! I would highly recommend it to anyone. 😀 Edit have been many times after and is one of the best places... their brownies are the best I have ever tasted and all their other food is very tasty too. 100% would recomend!

Waited at counter to place an order staff did not even acknowledge I was there They were busy reheating food and I saw them emptying a jar of sweet and sour sauce into a jug, heating it in microwave and then adding it to chicken before serving it.Whilst I stood patiently waiting to be served ,another woman came up to the till and was served before me.At that point I left and had my dinner in Grouchos up the street.
